True Lies the movie came out in 1994 and was an Arnold Schwarzenegger action comedy. So, it only makes sense that in 1995 there would be a video game based on it for the SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, and Game Gear. But after watching the movie - there isn't that much action. What did they do to pad it out then? Well, listen up, we're gonna tell you. Want to get right to the game? Sneak into the 11:40 mark! In this episode of Retro Titans, Phil sits down with veteran game developer Carleton Handley to explore a career that spans the golden age of gaming right through to today's retro revival. Carleton started out as a self-taught bedroom coder on the C64, before going on to work across multiple generations of games — from 8-bit classics to console and mobile titles. But in recent years, he's returned to where it all began, creating brand new games for the C64, including the brilliant puzzle game Millie and Molly. Together, they explore what draws developers back to retro platforms, how constraints can fuel creativity, and why the C64 scene is still very much alive today. In this episode, we explore: 1️⃣ From bedroom coder to professional developer Carleton's journey from learning to code as a teenager to working across Game Gear, PlayStation and early mobile games. 2️⃣ Why return to the C64? What brought him back to 8-bit development after years away from making games. 3️⃣ Designing Millie and Molly How thoughtful puzzle design and simple mechanics create a deeply rewarding experience. 4️⃣ The modern retro scene Why communities, tools and platforms are making it easier than ever to create for classic systems. Carleton also shares stories from his early career, his experiences working across different eras of the games industry, and how his passion for making games never really went away.

Springfield's favorite menace trades his skateboard for spandex in Bartman Meets Radioactive Man, and somehow the result ended up on both the NES and Game Gear. Whether it's justice or just pure mayhem, this is one crossover nobody asked for but we're glad to have anyway. But Chris can't do this along, so he's joined by the always enlightening Tommy Proffitt from Distant Echos and Lee Carvallo's Podding Challenge. Together they unravel what happens when cartoon superheroes meet 8-bit hardware and common sense takes a vacation. So grab your cape, your slingshot, and your best “Eat my shorts” energy, because things are about to get weird, nostalgic, and slightly irradiated. Just like Bart would've wanted. Learn such things as: How has The Simpsons secretly wormed its was into your everyday life? What happens when you have such a character driven franchise and use hardly any of them at all? Were the Radioactive Man comics just a testing ground for future characters? And so much more! You can find Tommy on Bluesky @awkwardcomma, and his podcasts Distant Echoes and Lee Carvallo's Podding Challenge. Can you feel the sunshine, listener! Our hosts certainly do! ...Or at least the shadows cast by a sun glowing too bright, as Dan and Tay discuss the on-foot racer, Sonic R! Much a discussion is had about the origins of this F1 Racer-turned-Sonic, as Traveller's Tales steps up once again to deliver a product unlike any Sonic game before (if you ignore a couple Game Gear bits)! Come listen as they tackle the tricky turning, crazy curves, and dead-end delights as this ambitious open-world product tries to do a lot within its small bounding box. Could someone get Knuckles a sandwich or something? He's looking a little anemic. Speed Radio, a Sonic the Hedgehog Retrospective Podcast, can be found wherever podcasts are hosted. Thema: Smash TV Erscheinungstermin: 1990 (Arcade) Plattform: Arcade (Williams/Midway); spätere Umsetzungen für NES, SNES, Mega Drive/Genesis, Master System, Game Gear, Amiga, ZX Spectrum u.a. Few events in video game history are more legendary than the Console War between Sega and Nintendo. Our guest today was one of the generals of that war, the head of Sega of America, Tom Kalinske. Tom's story is not just a story of Sega though, he started out in advertising, helping create the still iconic Flintstone's vitamins, he redefined Barbie's image, helped save Mattel from bankruptcy after the video game crash and lead one of the most important educational tech companies of our time, Leap Frog. Tom's insight into the world of toys, games and education over a career spanning 6 decades is a wild and fascinating ride. Plus the girls discuss the Dublin Ireland game between the Vikings and the Steelers, Jaxson Dart's time to shine in New York, the possible end to Russell Wilson's career, and much more!!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
