All biography is autobiography. Nowhere is this more evident than when discussing Tom Scioli's back-to-back books, Jack Kirby: The Epic Life of the King of Comics and I Am Stan: A Graphic Biography of the Legendary Stan Lee. Since his earliest works, Scioli has found himself through his reverence, study, and subversion of the King. Kirby's collaborations with Stan Lee shaped much of our current cultural imagination, and they absolutely reworked Scioli's DNA and continue to do so with each passing day. During our first conversation with Tom Scioli, done shortly after he completed his Jack Kirby biography, he seemed hesitant to the idea of tackling Stan Lee next. Three years later, he's done so, but he did it in an unexpected way, skipping the interior path into his subject and embracing the exterior. After all, there are so many more interviews, articles, biographies, and documentaries on Stan "The Man" Lee than Jack Kirby, and it was much easier to source the events described in I Am Stan. Hell, the appendix to the comic is almost as richly readable as the comic itself. I Am Stan's front cover and first two pages establish a challenging position, especially for those who've adored Stan Lee in a particular fashion for so many decades. We're grateful to have Tom Scioli on the podcast this week to discuss those opening blows and the sympathy and love he still carries for the man who many believe built Marvel Comics. We discuss how his approach to Stan Lee differed from Jack Kirby's and how both books combine to form a third narrative. I Am Stan: A Graphic Biography of the Legendary Stan Lee is now available from Ten Speed Press. Make sure to follow Tom Scioli on Twitter HERE, on Instagram HERE, and on Patreon HERE. Show notes provided by Joe Peluso With sincerest apologies, and endless love, to STAN LEE "Well pilgrim it is time for me to once again ascend to the top of my can-tankerous crate, amidst the mindful meandering masses trodding through the town square, and seize their attention with relevant rhapsodies! Today's tantalizing topic: The Silver Age of Marvel Comics. Riotous Rich Garofalo and Joltin' Joe Peluso recapture the scintillating sixties that provided the panoramic palette birthing the bomb-bastic backdrop of Mighty Marvel! With powerful portions of palaverouspontifications, the boys retell a tale of a simpler time of satirical and serious stories that salvaged a sickly medium and created an ardent army of "merry marching" faithful followers." PHEW! How did Stan do this every month? Rich and Joe have selected some of the most memorable Marvel Masterpieces from that wonderful era of four-color fun to review in this edition of Joe's Comics Corner. If you were fortunate enough to experience these gems firsthand, brace yourself for a flood of meaningful memories. And if this is your first exposure to Silver Age Marvel, sit back--and as Stan "The Man" Lee would oft say--ENJOY! And what honest review of any comic book be without a tease? Marvelite, you will learn of the strange connection between The 59th Street Bridge and (the now defunct) Tad's Steak House. "Don't say this isn't the Marvel Age of cryptic commentary?"

By 1974, Marvel had raced past DC Comics as the most popular and successful brand of comic book entertainment. Seeking to expand awareness and establish a presence in the burgeoning book market, Marvel pacted with prominent publisher, Simon & Schuster, who went on to produce a blockbuster line of Marvel trade collections under their Fireside label. These first of their kind collections featured accessible entry level stories of Marvel's most popular characters. Fireside books placed Marvel in libraries all over the country, further enhancing Marvel's growing profile. Fireside created the first ever original graphic novel by re-teaming Jack “The King” Kirby and Stan “The Man” Lee in a collaboration that produced an epic original Silver Surfer story! Rob recounts the history of Marvel & Fireside as he experienced it in real time!

Two titans in the pop culture industry - two icons without whom the very backbone of so called geek-culture would not exist. Born on opposite coasts of the United States, 22 years apart. Their work did not lay the foundation for pop culture enthusiasts IT IS the foundation for pop culture. The two men were discussing - Stan "The Man" Lee and "Emperor" George Lucas. The men you could say without we would not have neither the Marvel Universe and most certainly not the Star Wars universe. And that's not even their entire bodies of work! Our question tonight though who created the more significant pop culture universe. This question will divide fans but the only real answer is to love them both equally like your own children! This was a very fun interview as it took me back to many moments of my childhood! On this Q-on-1 podcast, I'm joined by Emmy-winning producer and a lifelong comic book fan, Mr. Joe Stuber! His podcast, Comic Book Central is extremely successful and is making a splash in the industry since 2013. CBC is the show where comic books come to life. From TV shows to movies to Broadway plays, Joe interviews the people responsible for making those things happen. From his very first episode with Stan "The Man" Lee to episodes with the likes of Mark Hamill, Joe Morton, or Julie Newmar. You can find anything related to comics and pop culture in the archives of CBC. Joe and I take a trip down memory lane to discuss how we spent our childhoods being fascinated by comic books. We then migrate towards present day to talk about it being a multi-billion dollar industry for movies, TV and video games. I had a great time doing this episode as it reminded me so much of how my love for comic books sparked the creative side that I have today. Website: ComicBookCentral.net Show #825 www.Talk2Q.com

Today on the Toy Power Podcast, we’re joined by our resident plastic-crack supplier Sam Cripps of @NerdsParadiseAdelaide who in typical fashion, delivers us more goodies. And I’m not talking about his Street Sharks tattoo… We start on a somber note as we pay tribute to the late Stan “The Man” Lee and his enormous legacy. There’s a couple of controversies floating about including the newly released Santa He-Man (He’s got a new hat!), a price-tag reveal of MP-44 Optimus Prime and the leg-snapping stats of Funko’s Savage World Thundercats. We also learn that Venom is more popular than we thought, Hellboy’s beefcake level is off the charts, Mythic Legions keep getting better and better, all while Detective Comics reaches an amazing milestone. Frank then tests the lads with an old-timey quiz about the toys of yesteryear that is quickly derailed by the cheapness of Parker Brothers, lead flavored bubblegum and butt-cheek tattoos. Other highlights include: An Arnie/He-Man crossover that Trent just won’t let go of, “packages rubbing on packages” and a potential unboxing video of Darren’s that we (sadistically) kinda wanna see… Support the show.

Episode 36: Alamo City Comic Con 2014What a difference a year makes… Last year's Comic Con was at least ten times more amazing than their inaugural opening in 2013. As a matter of fact, during the Con's first year, they brought in over 35,000 visitors during the 3-day raid on the Convention Center. In 2014, that number skyrocketed to almost 80,000 and in some reports, as high as 100,000 people. This year, I got to spend more time enjoying the con rather than worrying about recording for the podcast, but luckily, that actually helped me relax and record probably the same amount as last year. First up, I was able to interview the owner of Bean Pot Toiz, Grego and their social media manager, Kaylah. We talked about the success of the collectibles market and how Bean Pot Toiz is different from other “toy” sellers. We also discuss their new project, Bean Creative, which is all about the customization of toys, vinyls, and other collectible items. Grego also discusses some possible future project to help fill the void that ArtSlam left and gearing it more towards vinyls and toys as the medium. Kaylah discusses the social media aspect of Bean Pot Toiz, the creation of the company, and we finally learn about the idea behind the name and the face on the Bean Pot can. Be sure to check out Bean Pot Toiz at www.beanpottoiz.com, on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter! Our next interview was with Aaron Casas of Casas Ink. He tells us about how he got started in the apparel business and talks about how limited the runs for each design really are. We discuss the tattoo and surreal inspirations behind the designs of his shirts and the fact that he's only been doing this for a year and already has a booth at the Comic Con. I also find out what the mysterious Casas Ink monster is and what it means. You can see and buy Casas Ink's shirts at www.casasink.com, on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter! The video of the interviews can also be found on YouTube! The rest of this episode includes portions of the panels at the Con. The first panel you'll get to hear is George Takei and focuses on his Broadway musical, Allegiance. He takes various random questions from the audience and tells a hilarious story about his flight into San Antonio the prior day.Next, we have the King of Comics, Stan “The Man” Lee! One thing is true about Stan Lee, he is a character. Honestly though, he's probably answered the same questions more times than anyone could count, so he keeps it interesting by playing the self-obsessed, DC hating, old guy, BUT we love him for it anyway. Finally, we conclude the episode with some of the Weird Science panel which included Anthony Michael Hall & Ilan Mitchell-Smith. The two discuss what it was like working with John Hughes, their favorite memories of working on the film, and Kelly LeBrock. It was great seeing these two together again but towards the end, I kinda felt sorry for Ilan, who, since he hasn't been in Hollywood much since the 80's and only had Weird Science, remained quiet as Hall was asked a ton of questions.I hope you all enjoyed this taste of the Comic Con from 2014 and maybe I'll bump into you at 2015's Con. It's Wednesday, which means it's time for another regular episode of The Comics Alternative! This week, Andy and Derek really strut their alternative creds by focusing on three titles that keenly define “alternative.” First, they discuss the recent Dark Horse/Kitchen Sink book, The Best of Comix Book. This is a collection of comics culled from the original five-issue run of Comix Book, Marvel's ill-fated attempt to partner with the underground comix movement of the early 1970s. The project was originally initiated by Stan “The Man” Lee and edited by underground maverick, Denis Kitchen. This recent collection features the work of such major underground comix figures as Justin Green, Trina Robbins, Kim Deitch, S. Clay Wilson, Skip Williamson, Lee Marrs, Joel Beck, Art Spiegelman, and Sharon Rudahl, and it includes a wonderful historical essay by James Vance. The Two Guys discuss the various pieces that are collected, comment on some of the artists represented here, and even speculate on why certain comics from the original run were included in this collection and why others were not. Next, Derek and Andy turn their attention to two new single issues from Fantagraphics: Insect Bath #1 and Cosplayers #1. Edited by Jason T. Miles, Insect Bath is an anthology of comics that could be called contemporary manifestations of the “underground.” In this way, the book transitions well from Comix Book, in that it very much carries on in the tradition of the underground, although with much more of a minicomics feel (and minicomics themselves are arguably the legitimate offspring of comix). The guys feel that the pieces included in this first issue of Insect Bath are hit or miss, but they are more excited about Dash Shaw's Cosplayers. This is the first of a series — how many issues might there be? — where Shaw brings his experimental approach to a study of pop culture fandom. As Andy points out, Cosplayers feels much like a Daniel Clowes story, a far cry from what we saw last year in Shaw's unconventional 3 New Stories and New School. There's a lot packed into this episode, so plug in your earbuds and let's get it on!
