Today, we welcome veteran comic writer and animation producer Steve Seagle to explore his remarkable career. He started at Renegade Press with early creator-owned series like Kafka, The Amazon, and Solstice before temporarily leaving comics and then returning to work on major Marvel titles like Uncanny X-Men and Alpha Flight during a pivotal era in the company's history. Steve discusses his acclaimed run on Sandman Mystery Theatre, which earned him three Eisner nominations, his deeply personal graphic novel It's a Bird..., which offered a meta-narrative about the struggle of writing Superman, and how he balances commercial appeal with intimate storytelling across his diverse career. We also dive into his role as co-founder of Man of Action Entertainment and work on shows like Big Hero 6, Ultimate Spider-Man, and Avengers Assemble, exploring how his comic book background influenced his approach to animation storytelling. Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. This week on the show we have dear friend Dr. Scott DeGeest to talk about AI sentinels taking over humanity, Mastermind, and Human Torch Con. We dive into his birth month and year issue (Uncanny X-Men 175) where everyone thinks Cyclops is Dark Phoenix but don't worry...he had ten minutes to plan in response PLUS a belt calculator so he'll be okay. Also in this episode: Lodro has been to Minneapolis once and their gay bar Saloon twice The difference between dumb Sentinels and smart Sentinels We check in with our official Flamecon correspondent about a convention dedicated to the Human Torch I guess? Nightcrawler is bad at shoes Everyone knows that Chicago is famous for their pumpkins Jean has to go run some errands Phoenix ate, no crumbs Why Cyclops' mom should be a mutant What does any of this mean for Scott's future? Tune in to find out! Dr. Scott DeGeest has been lost in the world of X-Men and comics at large since age eight when he was left unsupervised for too long at the 1992 San Diego Comic Con. Early issues of Excalibur first sparked his love for the franchise. Today, he works as a principal data scientist at a tech company, where he uses his knowledge and curiosity about technology to explore science fiction about artificial intelligence, data science, and robots. In the world of X-Men podcasts, Scott is a regular contributor on Graymalkin Lane. He currently voices Steven Lang on that show's X-Men read-along. A regular guest on podcasts inside and outside of comics, Scott enjoys talking about the gaps between science fiction and science fact, especially related to portrayals of AI in comics. If you ask him, Scott will usually tell you his favorite X-Men character is Cyclops. However, if you press him, he will quickly go into lengthy detail about his interest in Rachel Summers. What's not to love about a psychic, time-traveling daughter from a dystopian future ruled by genocidal robots?

Hi, everybody. This week we are joined by visual artist Gabriel Hardman, the writer/artist of the upcoming Batman/Green Arrow/The Question: Arcadia available in November from DC Comics' Black Label imprint. He talks to us about his experiences storyboarding such films as Logan, Interstellar, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Inception, A Complete Unknown, the Austin Powers films, and so many more. Then we discuss his work in comics including Green Lantern: Earth One volumes 1 & 2, Invisible Republic, and his contributions to anthologies, just to name a few. But wait! There's more! Gabriel recently read through 30 years of Uncanny X-Men comics from the beginning with their very first issue in the early sixties all the way to the end of Chris Claremont's tenure on the title and he survived the experience! All this plus Disneyland! Follow Gabriel Hardman on social media @gabrielhardmanart on Instagram and @gabrielhardman on Bluesky. Thank you for listening. Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. This week we have the extremely talented Murewa Ayodele on the show to talk about everything current and upcoming in the STORM solo series he's writing! We get into the winding path of his becoming a comic writer, tears and all, and what motivated him to write Storm as powerfully as she is right now (spoiler: it's anger). Murewa was born in the midst of the Phalanx introduction (Uncanny X-Men 313) so we also discuss: how long superheroes can hold their breath underwater Bishop is the Hulk now the best way to take out the Phalanx is with a standard issue pole everyone is joining the Phalanx these days (looking at you, Douglock) you can be mad at Lodro about his Scottish accent or his lack of Star Trek knowledge, but not both All this plus how the core of the Storm series is about her autonomy. What does any of this mean for Murewa's future? Tune in to find out (nailed the horoscope this time, friends!) Murewa Ayodele is a recipient of the (Lagos Comic Con 2023) FIST AWARD for WRITER OF THE DECADE and is the writer of the Nommo-nominated comic book series, NEW MEN, the critically acclaimed webcomic series, MY GRANDFATHER WAS A GOD, the popular AKOGUN: BRUTALIZER OF GODS graphic novel, and several Marvel comics like MOON KNIGHT: BLACK WHITE & BLOOD, AVENGERS UNLIMITED INFINITY COMIC, I AM IRON MAN, X-MANHUNT: OMEGA, and, of course, STORM. In Predator Kills the Marvel Universe, you've teased a meditative tone as much as a brutal one. Can you talk about how you approached giving emotional weight to what could easily be a pure spectacle series?2. We know Frank Castle is at a low point in Punisher: Red Band, but you've also said it's a story about who Frank becomes when he has nothing left. What's the most surprising aspect of Frank you think readers will discover in this series?3. We here at AIPT have covered the use of the Punisher symbol via 3rd party swag outside of Disney, we even saw its use in the recent Daredevil show, what's your take on the Punisher logo and its use?4. With both Red Band and Predator Kills launching this year, you're leaning into stories with serious ultraviolence. As a writer, how do you decide when violence is meaningful versus when it's gratuitous?5. You mentioned in the Predator Kills the Marvel Universe press release that some heroes are more “killable” than others. Without giving anything away, was there a particular Marvel character that was the hardest to write a death for—either logistically or emotionally?6. You've done a lot of work balancing character legacy with reinvention—especially with Hellverine and now Red Hulk. How do you decide what to preserve and what to explode when you're writing these kinds of legacy figures?7. Spider-Man and Predator is a wild matchup. Can you tease what their conflict reveals about Peter Parker that we haven't seen before?8. Both Red Hulk and Hellverine feel like "dark mirror" characters—but wildly different in tone and execution. Do you see thematic overlap between them? How do you avoid them becoming just monstrous versions of other heroes?9. You're clearly building (or helping shape) a kind of hyper-violent sublabel within Marvel between Red Band, Predator crossovers, and these monstrous anti-heroes. Would you want to keep expanding this “Percy-verse”? And if so, who would you tap next?10. (Fun one): If Predator could take on one Marvel team in a cooking competition, who would it be—and what's Predator's signature dish?Short novel as a newspaper - subscribe - start November - post-apocalyptic “The End Times” Station 11 meets our townbadhandbooks.com
Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. This week we have special guest Clarke Whitehead, co-host of the fantastic Homo Superior podcast whose parents had the good sense to birth him on the date of the release of Kitty's Fairy Tale. He has a voracious appetite for entertainment from Asian reality dating shows, European Cold War dramas, and Anglophone Soap Operas to Turner Classic Movies, Sims Twitch Streams, and – obviously - X-Men comics. When Homo Superior was in it's planning stages, Clarke was to feature in the weekly segment “Clarke's Corner,” where he would spill his unorthodox or unpopular takes in an Andy Rooney style of off-kilter ranting. Galactus makes his big-screen debut this week in Fantastic Four: First Steps*, which means it's the perfect opportunity to discuss his second-ever comics appearances in The Mighty Thor – specifically, issues #160-162 and 168-169, by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, published by Marvel Comics! (For his comics debut, we humbly direct you to our very first episode from 2016!) First, it's the war to settle the score, the brawl to end it all, as the Devourer of Worlds squares off against none other than Ego the Living Planet! And the Son of Odin and the Rigellian robot known as the Recorder are caught in the middle! It's classic 60s Lee/Kirby space opera at its most grandiose! Then, we get a … somewhat disjointed look at Galactus' origin, including a rap session between Big G and the God of Thunder! PLUS: We discuss James Gunn's Superman! SUMMER CROSSOVER SPECTACULAR CONTINUES! Marvel's X-titles are practically a superhero universe unto themselves, and the tradition of regular crossovers between them continues to this day. We take a look at the very first of these epics, “Mutant Massacre,” which follows the wholesale slaughter of the underground Morlock community through parallel story threads in Uncanny X-Men and X-Factor, while also winding its way through several other titles, both mutant-related and not-so-mutant-related. But whereas most crossovers are top-down editorial-driven stunts, the “Massacre” began as a storytelling experiment between writers (and friends) Chris Claremont and Louise Simonson. We look at the history of the X-books as a franchise, labyrinthine plotting that may or may not ever pay off down the line, and how events like this shake up the status quo, for better or for worse.Discussed in this episode: Uncanny X-Men #210-213, X-Factor #9-11, New Mutants #46, Power Pack #27, Thor #373-374, and Daredevil #238.CHECK OUT THE MUTANT MASSACRE MAP: https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Mutant_Massacre?file=Mutant_Massacre_Map_001.jpgSUPPORT THE PODCAST: patreon.com/ironageofcomics
