On this episode, we chat with Jessie Grossman, the U.S. Program Manager with the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative (Y2Y). Jessie tells us about Y2Y's focus on connectivity and working to protect habitat that supports a range of wildlife and human activities. Y2Y takes a unique and refreshing approach to facilitating collaboration between multiple groups of stakeholders and rights holders in the Yellowstone to Yukon region. During the conservation segment, Hunt To Eat's CEO, Mahting Putelis, joins us to chat about the concept of “corner crossing”, the history of land management in the West, and what it means for accessing public land; recent changes to the Washington black bear hunt; and a new bill that could advance our understanding and management of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in the U.S. During the food segment, Judy Russ (of Episode 3 of the show) joins us once again to give a primer on spices that every wild game cook should have in their cupboard to impress guests without breaking the bank. Other news includes inside scoops on discount codes for the Hunt To Eat store and a limited time offer on Hunt To Eat Magazine subscriptions. Welcome to the Hunt To Eat Show's inaugural episode! This podcast engages with thoughtful guests to have conversations about Hunt To Eat's three pillars: community, real food, and conservation. Hosted by Casey Pelzl and Paul McCarney, the show digs into the challenges and complexities involved in conservation and gathering our own food. We tackle difficult conservations, have some fun, and work to create a meaningful and inclusive hunting and outdoors community. In the guest segment of this episode, we talk to Hunt To Eat's CEO, Mahting Putelis, and its Editor in Chief, Gabby Zaldumbide, about the company's vision, goals, and the community it wants to build for the future. For the conservation discussion, we ruminate on one of our favorite ruminants (the caribou), one of the world's favorite predators (the polar bear), and the inherent complexity of what it means to be a “hunter.” In the food segment, we talk about some general food safety and handling tips. Welcome to the Hunt To Eat Show!
Mahting Putelis is a hunter, entrepreneur, former outdoor sports guide, teacher, photographer and CEO of Hunt To Eat.Hunt To Eat is a hunting media and apparel company with the focus on gathering wild foods and conservation. Hunt To Eat hosts hunting camps where they teach people the skills to hunt a specific species of animal, field dressing, meat care, and firearm safety. They use the experience as a platform to teach ethics, conservation, and tactics. These experiences are a way for people to connect in their values, personality, and character in a shared experience.Mahting had a teacher that introduced him to his passions and a way he can thrive in service to himself and his community. After struggling with purpose in school, Mahting found a direction in mountain guiding and education. As a guide he learned about communication, perspective, and managing groups during adventures in nature. His interest in the outdoors blossomed into exploring his creativity when he pivoted to being an adventure photographer. He was thrust into entrepreneurial and creative challenges in the environment that meant the most to him. In his adulthood, he circled back to his family's tradition of hunting. Mahting's love for the outdoors, helping people and connecting with their spirit shows in this conversation and his work through Hunt To Eat. In this episode, we talk about how Mahting became an entrepreneur, found his context where he can thrive, discovered his sense of purpose, Hunt To Eat, hunting camps, and how his character has unfolded over time.Checkout the rad shirts and their latest magazine at Hunttoeat.com

On this episode of the Huntavore, Mahting Putelis, CEO of Hunt to Eat joins Nick for a chat about a wild foodie's favorite fashion wear. Hunt to Eat started as just a t-shirt company that has blossomed into an organization whose mission encompasses community, real food, and conservation. Mahting opens up about his start in the outdoors as a kid, how the phrase “food for fuel” relates to his upbringing, a love for photography lead to getting behind a rifle, and reveals some incredible new content coming from Hunt to Eat.Mahting Putelis comes from humble beginnings. Living within their means and having a perspective of “food is fuel”, Mahting and his siblings had a unique upbringing with food. Which makes hunting for sustenance a reality. Only fitting that Mahting and his brother started the company Hunt to Eat. First just a t-shirt company that created tasteful wears for hunters and anglers, expands to an organization that brought together a community of folks who showed what they can do with their harvest, introducing new people to our passion of acquiring real food, and teaching others the importance of conservation.Mahting does admit that he may not find his home in the kitchen, but he does take his place as the grill master. Mahting likes to keep things simple which given his choice of wild protein will ultimately end up delicious. A marinated turkey breast grilled up nicely into carnitas is a goto from Mahting. Or a beautiful elk burger with straight ground. Letting the game take the driver seat in the dish.Hunt to Eat also is announcing that they are growing from just a website and clothing, but breaking into the media realm. With a few of their own podcasts, a show, and a magazine launching soon. Sometimes I feel oversaturated with news about hunter numbers. They’re up, they’re down. And then back up again. Now Outdoor Life says we have no clue what they are. Whatever they are or aren’t, I think we need to do better. Even if hunting spiked last year, we have to realize there is some bubble happening here. Of course people hunted more last year, it was one of the only things you could do. How many times have I said that we were losing hunters to youth sports? And Netflix? Well youth sports were shut down last year, and there’s only so many rounds of your favorite show you can watch before you have to move or become part of the couch. There are some really interesting plays happening in the outdoor space. You have people like AJ De Rosa, Nic De Castro, Slade Johnston, Murielle Gaither, Adam Gifford, and my team at GoWild so many others, who are making strong tech plays to get more people outside. I hope that together, we’re building a strong enough community to avoid losing hunters when this bubble bursts. And just like the ammo and gun shortage, it will burst. We’ll either be prepared for it, and have handled it well. Or it’ll be 2016 over again, when the demand for guns slumped, a time the gun industry calls the Trump Slump due to it coming along with Trump’s win of the election, and then firearms companies started getting their butts handed to them. Today's guest is another guy who deserves to be among that list of people I mentioned. It’s Mahting Putellis, the founder of Hunt to Eat. He’s going to talk about hunter recruitment and retention today. And what he and his team are doing to help more people get outside. HunttoEat.com
Getting into turkey hunting can seem overwhelming so we asked Mahting Putelis from Hunt to Eat to share his gear recommendations and entry level tips. Mahting shares how he uses digital scouting to locate turkeys, his turkey shotgun setup, his turkey calling strategy, how to make sure turkeys don’t spot you, his favorite piece of turkey hunting gear, and his favorite way to cook and eat thunder chickens. This is another installment in our series on food, food systems, and food movements, and we have included links below to all of the really interesting and diverse range of conversations we’ve had this year on these topics. Our guest today was first introduced to me by Blister reviewer, Paul Forward. Mahting Putelis is the founder of Hunt to Eat, which is an organization that exists to:“Find modern, progressive, and inclusive ways to support and grow the community of folks that go outdoors, harvest wild meat, or plants, or fungi, and take these things home to be cooked with care for themselves or their friends and family. The folks that see the importance of wildlife and nature. This community is not defined by race, politics, education, wealth, or gender; it's simply a human community. Hunting, fishing, foraging, and existing in nature are things that human beings have done to survive since the dawn of our evolution. Everyone who exists in nature is part of the Hunt to Eat community. And it can only grow from here.”TOPICS & TIMES:What is Hunt to Eat? Mahting is a professional photographer for adventure sports and the owner of Hunt To Eat. Hunt to Eat is an apparel brand out of Colorado that raises a lot of money for conservation. They collaborate with organizations, some of which are BHA, TRCP, NWF, Phesants Forever, and Artemis. Also with outdoor leaders like Randy Newberg, Remi Warren and Hank Shaw. And companies such as Federal Premium, Phelps Game Calls and OnX. Mahting stayed up at Island View Resort in Michigan’s Eastern upper penninsula with our friends, Ryan Cavanaugh and Jason Meekhof. We spent the week duck and Woodcock hunting. Jason was able to get his first ever ducks and Mahting got his first Timberdoodle. We also ate a lot of great food and just had a good time. We discuss and learn the importance of first aid in the field when my dog starts bleeding bad in an area with no access to a vet. We discuss the importance of introducing people to wild game with something they are comfortable with like a cheese burger and easy and delicious recipes for sandwhiches, Geese, and Antelope. Also Mahting shares the story of his bucket list hunt for Caribou, in Alaska, north of the Arctic Circle.

“I’d rather be a plumber and be the best I can be, and be able to hunt, rather than to push paint and never be able to hunt again. I feel like that’s more rewarding for me." - Ryan Kirby Today’s guest would tell you he was born an artist. That the paint brush was as natural in his hand as a basketball to Kobe Bryant. I’m not sure I agree. OK, the Kobe Bryant analogy is mine, Ryan would never say that. And I’ll agree some folks are more artistically inclined than others. But even with today’s guest’s natural ability, I think it’d sell his work ethic short to say he didn’t earn his success by putting in his form of 10,000 hours. Ryan has won over a dozen awards from organizations like Outdoor Life, National Wild Turkey Federation, and Quality Deer Management Association. He’s painted dozens of works of art and these things sell for a premium. A couple of Ryan’s paintings may be worth more than your truck. And when you hear how much time and labor goes into one of these paintings, you’ll realize why his paintings sell for a premium. If this is your first episode of Restless Native, welcome. I hope you’ll hit subscribe. If you dig this episode you’d probably like my conversation with Mahting Putelis in episode 33, as well as my chat with the guys at Modern Huntsmen on episode 30. This is a great chance for a family trip or a break away with the buddies. The convention is a celebration of wildlife, wild places and the hunting lifestyle we all love. It has thousands of visitors and exhibitors coming from all over the globe for a three day exposition. Beyond the convention, you can experience some amazing entertainment, with performances from folks like Corey Morrow, Rickey Davis and Billboard chart-frequent flyer, Kevin Fowler. There are banquets and luncheons, auctions and more stuff than I possibly have time to tell you about right now. And as Joe said in his most recent interview, Houston is a great place to spend a weekend and grub. You know what the best part of all of this is? Your tickets and support of this expo help fulfill Houston Safari Club Foundation’s mission of preserving the sport of hunting through education, conservation and the promotion of our hunting heritage. The show is January 25 through the 27th in Houston Texas. I will be wandering the floor on January 26 and possibly the morning of the 27th. Please send me a direct message on GoWild if you’re going to be there and we’ll meetup. Learn more at hscfdn.org/convention. Thank you to Houston Safari Club Foundation for all you do, and for sponsoring Restless Native.
Thanks for hopping on the trail with us this week Roamers! We’ve got a great conversation with Lee, Sam and Adam being joined by co-founder and current owner/operator/spokesman of Hunt To Eat and all around conservation go-getter, Mahting Putelis. Some tough questions are asked and hopefully answered as the guys dive into some of the […]
“If you do not know something well, if you don’t have a sense of some place, you are not going to protect it.” — Mahting Putelis, Founder of Hunt to Eat Many American patriots and outdoorsmen embrace the Gadsden flag’s message of “Don’t Tread on Me.” I do, too, but sometimes we could use a reminder that the best defense, may actually be a good offense. In regards to telling our story of hunting in today’s world, we have to be careful when taking a Don’t Tread on Me philosophy. This same mentality is totally appropriate when toppling an oppressive government dictating your religious freedoms. It’s less so when used to defend your hunting privilege. A good offense is knowing that our story could offend voters who could take that privilege away from us, so we should do our best to stay on the offensive, doing good work to earn points for hunting. Take people into the locker room to show the camaraderie and fellowship of your hunting trip. Talk about what it’s like to have the world wake up around you, and to see the woods as the wolf does. Share your table fare both directly, by cooking for people who are curious about wild game, and also through your social media channels. All of these activities earn points for our lifestyle. I’m not advocating for never showing a trophy shot. But I am saying when you do, make sure you’re not just going through the motions. Think about the content. Remind yourself that your audience matters, no matter how many followers you have. We’re going to dive deeper into this conversation today. We’ll actually be talking about a lot of different things. Today’s guest is Mahting Putelis, the founder of Hunt to Eat. Mahting would be considered new to hunting and the hunting industry to some. He’s outspoken by nature, he’s ruffling some feathers for sure. He makes some from the old guard uncomfortable. He doesn’t care about hunting’s societal norms established thus far and is willing to speak up with he disagrees. Don't Miss the Hunt to Eat + GoWild Shirt Mahting and his team designed up the perfect shirt for GoWild. We're excited about it. I've already bought mine. Don't miss out. Buy yours now. Log Time As always, log your time on GoWild for this episode and let us know what you think about the conversation. Maybe you disagree with me or Mahting, or maybe you have something to add. I love seeing your feedback on the show. Often you all think of things in a way I haven’t yet. So please be sure to log time and let us know your take. Just like you, they train for the year to ensure they make a quick, ethical kill on the animal. To do that as an archer, you need a high quality broadhead in your quiver, which is why I’m bringing this message to you from our sponsor, Ramcat Broadheads. Keep listening—we’ve got a deal for you in just a second. First, I wanted to tell you about the technology behind these blades. Ramcats make a wickedly accurate broadhead that is known for being a highly technical and meticulously designed. They work a bit differently than what you’re use to. They have concave scoops that create an airfoil, which eliminates wind planing. This forces air to slip over the ferrule and arrow shaft for best in-class accuracy and impact energy. It’s time to put Ramcat’s top performance in your quiver. It doesn’t matter if you’re shooting a recurve, compound or crossbow, and no matter the speed of your bow. You can get 25% off your first purchase of Ramcat Broadheads with code gowild2018. This info is also in the show notes. Thank you to Ramcat Broadheads for sponsoring Restless Native. We appreciate ya
Congratulations Mahting Putelis on this great CO archery bull! Podcast Episode 27 Hunt To Eat: A Conversation with Mahting Putelis Hunt To Eat Hunt To Eat owner Mahting Putelis is a respected outdoor industry leader, entrepreneur, hunter, climber and conservationist. This week, Mahting joins us to talk about his wide-ranging background within the $887 billion outdoor recreation industry and how that's helped shape his vision for Hunt To Eat. We talk about outdoor recreation community building, mentorship, Venison Diplomacy & 'The Gathering', H2E's latest t shirt collaborations and a "Wild First" ethos. Mahting Putelis - On Building Broad Ranging Outdoor Communities: "If we can coalesce that giant voice, we can effect huge change. If we use Wild First as a baseline, if we say "we are going to protect wild places and wild animals first and then deal with how all that looks after, we can engage a very large part of the voting population. We all love wild places and wild animals. Its very much a baseline, its easy for people to say yes, we should protect these things". Cazenovia, Wisconsin. After whitetail deer hunting opening day on the Duren family farm, Steven Rinella talks with Doug "Buckman" Duren, Brittany Brothers, Helen Cho, Janis Putelis, and Mahting Putelis. Subjects discussed: blaukš!, or the Latvian bang; similarities between opening day and Christmas; similarities between opening day and war; mooching for whitetails; The Wet Spot (or what Steve would name his bar if he had one); The Standard; Steve's alternative big buck management plan; thoughts on antlers; after-kill rituals; and why people want to let small animals go, aside from the fact that they don't have as much meat.
