He was the first singer to truly combine blues, country and jazz into the form that would shape American popular music to this day. From the roughest, driest deserts, to our towering, high-alpine peaks, Senator Martin Heinrich has explored the most remote public lands in New Mexico. As an avid hunter, angler, birder and forager, New Mexico's Senior United States Senator cherishes every opportunity to spend time outdoors. Sen. Heinrich is not shy about expressing his tremendous love for the state he proudly chooses to call home. His unwavering love for New Mexico and its wild places is always on clear display as he tenaciously represents the interests of all public land lovers while he carries out critical work in Washington, D.C. Conservationists from around the country and on both sides of the political aisle have come to recognize Sen. Heinrich as "America's Conservation Champion." In this episode, host Jesse Deubel is joined by Sen. Heinrich as well as two other hunting, fishing and conservation partners. Jeremy Vesbach and Jeremy Romero have both been on the show before. This is their first appearance together. Jeremy Vesbach is a former NM State Game Commissioner and the former executive director of the New Mexico Wildlife Federation. Currently he serves as the Western Lands Director at Western Resource Advocates. Jeremy Romero is also a former staff member of the New Mexico Wildlife Federation. Currently he works as the Wildlife Connectivity Manager at the National Wildlife Federation. In conservation circles these two Jeremy's are affectionately referred to as "Jeremy Squared."All four of these professional conservationists have the fortune of sharing time in the field on occasion. After a day of glassing for elk, calling to turkeys or drifting flies down a remote stream for trout, this team of advocates relaxes around a campfire discussing issues surrounding public lands, waters and wildlife.  The conversation featured on this show provides listeners an opportunity to eavesdrop on one of these fireside-type chats. Their musings range from Capitol Hill to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and from the Gila to the Tongass National Forests. Enjoy the listen!   For more info: NMWF Website

This week, we discuss the medicinal and edible uses of the Smilax and Aralia families. These are among the most ubiquitous and confusing of all herbs. Very little research has been done to differentiate between them, but most seem to be used interchangeably to varying extents. Wha that means, is the green briar you keep trying to eradicate in your back yard may be as medicinal and valuable as sarsaparilla, spikenard and ginseng.... and is almost certainly edible and quite good! Also, I am back on Youtube Please subscribe to my channel: @judsoncarroll5902   Judson Carroll - YouTubeTune of the week:Stock Time on guitarI show you how to play Mississippi John Hurt's "Stock Time" on guitar. This is a basic buck dance tune. This genre goes back to at least the 1850s, but is just as enjoyable today. These tunes were made for dancing, so we discuss the importance of playing for dancers. Music dies when people stop dancing to it. Then, I discuss my Larivee guitar.... I consider it to be the absolute perfect guitar. It fits me, it is my other voice... I wouldn't sell it or trade it for an instrument ten times its value. To quote my old friend, Guy Clark, "Stuff that works, stuff that holds up, the kind of stuff you don't hang on the wall, stuff that's real, stuff you feel, the kind of thing you cling to when you fall"... there is no better guitar for me.https://youtu.be/QiPHnYu0c_gEmail: judson@judsoncarroll.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/southern-appalachian-herbs--4697544/supportRead about The Spring Foraging Cookbook: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2024/01/the-spring-foraging-cookbook.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CRP63R54Medicinal Weeds and Grasses of the American Southeast, an Herbalist's Guidehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2023/05/medicinal-weeds-and-grasses-of-american.htmlAvailable in paperback on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C47LHTTHandConfirmation, an Autobiography of Faithhttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2023/05/confirmation-autobiography-of-faith.htmlAvailable in paperback on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C47Q1JNKVisit my Substack and sign up for my free newsletter:https://judsoncarroll.substack.com/Read about my new other books:Medicinal Ferns and Fern Allies, an Herbalist's Guide https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/11/medicinal-ferns-and-fern-allies.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BMSZSJPSThe Omnivore's Guide to Home Cooking for Preppers, Homesteaders, Permaculture People and Everyone Else: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/10/the-omnivores-guide-to-home-cooking-for.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BGKX37Q2Medicinal Shrubs and Woody Vines of The American Southeast an Herbalist's Guidehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/06/medicinal-shrubs-and-woody-vines-of.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B2T4Y5L6andGrowing Your Survival Herb Garden for Preppers, Homesteaders and Everyone Elsehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/04/growing-your-survival-herb-garden-for.htmlhttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B09X4LYV9RThe Encyclopedia of Medicinal Bitter Herbs: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/03/the-encyclopedia-of-bitter-medicina.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B5MYJ35RandChristian Medicine, History and Practice: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/01/christian-herbal-medicine-history-and.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B09P7RNCTBHerbal Medicine for Preppers, Homesteaders and Permaculture People: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2021/10/herbal-medicine-for-preppers.htmlAlso available on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B09HMWXL25Podcast:  https://www.spreaker.com/show/southern-appalachian-herbsBlog: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/Free Video Lessons: Herbal Medicine 101 - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7QS6b0lQqEclaO9AB-kOkkvlHr4tqAbs

Let's explore foraging as a living, contested relationship between ecology, culture, law, and survival. Beginning with za'atar - a resilient wild thyme central to Palestinian foodways - we examine how conservation policy can criminalize cultural harvest. From there, we move briefly through international access models (UK personal-use law, Nordic everyman's rights, regulated European mushroom harvest), and closer to home: US National Parks, Washington State Parks, Seattle, and Tacoma.  We unpack how language like management, stewardship, and resource protection can obscure power, and we ground the conversation in ecological restoration, justice, livelihoods, and human health. We also highlight examples of agencies attempting to align policy with principle and how there is a new story emerging that could signal change - if we demand it. Ultimately, the question remains: Who gets to eat from the land? Selected References & Policies Hernandez, J., & Vogt, K. A. (2020). Indigenizing Restoration: Indigenous Lands before Urban Parks. (240) Foods to Consume in Moderation

FLAVORS + kNOWLEDGE

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 6, 2026 8:12

Today's episode is about foods that may be dangerous when not consumed properly. Many everyday foods that seem harmless—or even healthy—can pose real risks when mishandled, overconsumed, or prepared improperly. I'm not here to spread fear, but rather to promote sensible awareness so you can enjoy them safely. We already recognize that frequent junk food like greasy cheeseburgers or high-calorie donuts harms our diet over time. Similarly, several everyday items we eat regularly carry potential downsides if we're not mindful.I'll begin with Wild mushrooms as a prime example. Foraging for mushrooms in your backyard or accepting them from a well-meaning friend might feel natural and organic, but wild varieties contain deadly toxins. They often closely resemble safe, supermarket-bought ones, yet harbor poisonous compounds that can lead to severe illness or fatality. Reliable data shows that mushroom poisonings cause a small number of deaths annually in the US—typically around 3 per year on average—though global estimates sometimes suggest higher figures in certain regions, and severe cases requiring hospitalization are more common. The key risk comes from misidentification, so unless you're an expert mycologist, it's far safer to stick with commercially cultivated varieties.Number 2: Elderberries. Often praised in natural remedies for their immune-supporting potential, require careful preparation. When raw, underripe, or improperly cooked, they contain compounds (including cyanogenic glycosides) that can release cyanide in the body, leading to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, dizziness, or, in larger amounts, even worse. Always cook elderberries thoroughly—such as in jams, syrups, or teas—and avoid including stems, leaves, or unripe berries, which are more toxic. Commercial products are generally processed safely, but homemade versions demand extra caution.Number 3 is Nutmeg, a beloved spice in both sweet treats and savory dishes like cream sauces, which is delightful in small pinches. However, consuming larger quantities—such as 2–3 teaspoons or more (around 5–10 grams or higher)—can trigger serious effects due to myristicin. This compound metabolizes into substances causing hallucinations, dizziness, nausea, dry mouth, rapid heartbeat, confusion, and, in extreme cases, seizures or prolonged distress. While fatalities are extremely rare and usually involve massive overdoses or combinations with other substances, nutmeg intoxication has sent people to emergency rooms, especially from misguided attempts to use it recreationally. Stick to typical culinary amounts for flavor without worry.Number 4 is tuna, which certainly offers excellent protein and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Still, it accumulates methylmercury, a neurotoxin that can harm the kidneys, nervous system, and developing brains over time. Larger predatory species, such as albacore (white tuna) or bigeye, have higher levels than skipjack or canned light varieties. Health authorities like the FDA recommend moderation: for most adults, a few servings per week are fine, with pregnant or breastfeeding individuals and young children limiting intake further, perhaps 8 to 12 ounces of lower-mercury seafood weekly, with albacore capped slightly lower. Choose "best choice" options like canned light tuna more often and vary your seafood to minimize exposure.Read the full content hereSubscribe-free to our NewsletterProduced by SimVal Media Group, USA

Summary The Wild Harvest Report for February 2026 provides a comprehensive overview of seasonal opportunities for hunting, fishing, and foraging across North America. The report explores regions from the Southeast to the Pacific Northwest, detailing unique conditions and wildlife. Additionally, it highlights culinary practices that utilize seasonal ingredients, encouraging listeners to make the most of their harvests and preserved foods. Takeaways This podcast is a monthly food first snapshot of the wild season. February is a month where weather and access conditions can change fast. Local knowledge and good judgment matter just as much as regulations. Fishing opportunities vary greatly by region, especially in saltwater and freshwater. Wild hog hunting is a prime opportunity in many southern states. Foraging begins with early spring greens in warmer areas. Ice fishing is a major focus in the Midwest and Northeast. Culinary practices in February lean towards slow-cooked meals. Preserved foods from previous seasons should be utilized now. The best part of the season is often what you notice along the way. This week, we discuss the medicinal uses of two interesting plants.  This first is Canada Moonseed, which is toxic plant that may be mistaken for wild grape, but does have some medicinal use.  The second is Partridgeberry, often called Squaw vine, which is extremely useful medicinally and a good edible. Also, I am back on Youtube Please subscribe to my channel: @judsoncarroll5902   Judson Carroll - YouTubeTune of the week:Joe Turner BluesI show you how to play my version of "Joe Turner Blues", that is mostly based on Mississippi John Hurt's performances. It is a very old song, with many versions and origin stories. Joe Turner may have been a regulator, deputy sheriff, philanthropist, government agent, railroad man or just a guy trying steal another man's wife.... who knows? There were likely as many Joe Turners as there are versions of the song. But this one has a great rhythm and is a 3 chord song in G. that gives plenty of room to improvise.https://youtu.be/SxSKqUjrPJQEmail: judson@judsoncarroll.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/southern-appalachian-herbs--4697544/supportRead about The Spring Foraging Cookbook: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2024/01/the-spring-foraging-cookbook.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CRP63R54Medicinal Weeds and Grasses of the American Southeast, an Herbalist's Guidehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2023/05/medicinal-weeds-and-grasses-of-american.htmlAvailable in paperback on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C47LHTTHandConfirmation, an Autobiography of Faithhttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2023/05/confirmation-autobiography-of-faith.htmlAvailable in paperback on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C47Q1JNKVisit my Substack and sign up for my free newsletter:https://judsoncarroll.substack.com/Read about my new other books:Medicinal Ferns and Fern Allies, an Herbalist's Guide https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/11/medicinal-ferns-and-fern-allies.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BMSZSJPSThe Omnivore's Guide to Home Cooking for Preppers, Homesteaders, Permaculture People and Everyone Else: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/10/the-omnivores-guide-to-home-cooking-for.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BGKX37Q2Medicinal Shrubs and Woody Vines of The American Southeast an Herbalist's Guidehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/06/medicinal-shrubs-and-woody-vines-of.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B2T4Y5L6andGrowing Your Survival Herb Garden for Preppers, Homesteaders and Everyone Elsehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/04/growing-your-survival-herb-garden-for.htmlhttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B09X4LYV9RThe Encyclopedia of Medicinal Bitter Herbs: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/03/the-encyclopedia-of-bitter-medicina.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B5MYJ35RandChristian Medicine, History and Practice: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/01/christian-herbal-medicine-history-and.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B09P7RNCTBHerbal Medicine for Preppers, Homesteaders and Permaculture People: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2021/10/herbal-medicine-for-preppers.htmlAlso available on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B09HMWXL25Podcast:  https://www.spreaker.com/show/southern-appalachian-herbsBlog: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/Free Video Lessons: Herbal Medicine 101 - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7QS6b0lQqEclaO9AB-kOkkvlHr4tqAbs

My version is based on several of the older blues and hokum versions of the song from the 1920s, but I like the Flatt and Scruggs version too, so I blended in several influences. I play it in the key of C, which is standard for the early blues versions. It follows the cycle of 5ths, but with a eat little twist that keeps it moving at a fun pace. If you head out on a Ferry from Oakland's Jack London Square over the Bay, to San Francisco… there's another special place where you can get fresh food: Fisherman's Wharf. Here, boats dock early in the morning with salmon and halibut, mackerel.. and now it's Dungeness crab season! The catch then goes into refrigerated trucks, to eventually end up across the country or around the world. But for one Fisherman, catching and enjoying this bounty is best served… right here at home. Kirk Lombard is a sea forager. And he shows people why and how we should catch seafood ourselves, on the docks and mudflats around the Bay. This is a great old tune, and a perfect vehicle for a bluesy/jazzy, fingerstyle break or solo. Rodgers often worked with Dixieland bands and even the great, Louis Armstrong. So, even though he is known as "The Father of Country Music", his songs are equally influential across the genres of traditional American music - blues, country, jazz and rock all owe a huge debt to Jimmie Rodgers and Emmett Miller.https://youtu.be/ffHdRExIGB4Email: judson@judsoncarroll.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/southern-appalachian-herbs--4697544/supportMy new book: A Daily Catholic Devotional Reflections on the Daily Mass readings January-June, 2026: Caroll, Judson: 9798270034252: Amazon.com: Books  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FWJMD7CLRead about The Spring Foraging Cookbook: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2024/01/the-spring-foraging-cookbook.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CRP63R54Medicinal Weeds and Grasses of the American Southeast, an Herbalist's Guidehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2023/05/medicinal-weeds-and-grasses-of-american.htmlAvailable in paperback on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C47LHTTHandConfirmation, an Autobiography of Faithhttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2023/05/confirmation-autobiography-of-faith.htmlAvailable in paperback on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C47Q1JNKVisit my Substack and sign up for my free newsletter:https://judsoncarroll.substack.com/Read about my new other books:Medicinal Ferns and Fern Allies, an Herbalist's Guide https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/11/medicinal-ferns-and-fern-allies.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BMSZSJPSThe Omnivore's Guide to Home Cooking for Preppers, Homesteaders, Permaculture People and Everyone Else: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/10/the-omnivores-guide-to-home-cooking-for.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BGKX37Q2Medicinal Shrubs and Woody Vines of The American Southeast an Herbalist's Guidehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/06/medicinal-shrubs-and-woody-vines-of.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B2T4Y5L6andGrowing Your Survival Herb Garden for Preppers, Homesteaders and Everyone Elsehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/04/growing-your-survival-herb-garden-for.htmlhttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B09X4LYV9RThe Encyclopedia of Medicinal Bitter Herbs: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/03/the-encyclopedia-of-bitter-medicina.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B5MYJ35RandChristian Medicine, History and Practice: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/01/christian-herbal-medicine-history-and.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B09P7RNCTBHerbal Medicine for Preppers, Homesteaders and Permaculture People: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2021/10/herbal-medicine-for-preppers.htmlAlso available on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B09HMWXL25Podcast:  https://www.spreaker.com/show/southern-appalachian-herbsBlog: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/Free Video Lessons: Herbal Medicine 101 - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7QS6b0lQqEclaO9AB-kOkkvlHr4tqAbs

This episode was originally published on July 14th, 2023. I think most stream anglers are interested in foraging, since we're immersed in nature all day long and although we watch for fish and insects and birds, many of us don't pay attention to the plants. And there are many delicious plants along trout streams you can take home for dinner—most of which will be more nutritionally dense than what you buy in the store—and free. If you have done any foraging at all, you have probably read some of more of Sam Thayer's [40:38] books. In our household his books are the primary source. I was lucky enough to spend some time talking to Sam about why foraging along streams is especially good, and what we can expect to find there.  In the Fly Box this week, we have no phone calls but some great questions via e-mail, including: Why do trout in small streams take flies more readily when the water is high? Where do you recommend I go trout fishing in the East in July when I visit this summer? A great story about a listener getting generous advice from a famous angler along a trout river. A tip for keeping rod sections together using clothespins. What is the best streamer reel, line, and leader for a 7-weight rod? What do you do when there is a very heavy hatch and almost too many natural insects? I am having trouble hooking fish using the hand-over-hand retrieve when striper fishing. What can I do to increase my hooking rate? What are three things a novice dry-fly angler should pay attention to? Do you ever tie up dry/dropper rigs at home prior to going fishing? Will my 8-weight be enough rod for fishing for striped bass from a boat? What are some tips on picking flies for striped bass fishing at night?

Eatweeds Podcast: For People Who Love Plants

In this new short-form episode, Robin Harford challenges our relationship with common sorrel (Rumex acetosa) – a plant we've dismissed for centuries simply because it grows freely everywhere. This episode introduces a new podcast format: short observations (2-5 minutes) with a call to action. Robin doesn't want you to just listen, he wants you outside, engaging with plants where you are.Safety note: If you suffer from kidney stones or sensitivity to oxalic acids, avoid sorrel due to its high oxalate content.
