A group of lobster fishermen can sue one of the world's largest seafood watchdog groups for defamation, a federal court has ruled, over a report that described Maine lobster as an unwise choice for consumers. The threat to a rare whale species from getting tangled in fishing gear has prompted Monterey Bay Aquarium in California to caution against eating a variety of lobster that New England fishermen have harvested for centuries. Seafood Watch, a conservation program operated by the aquarium, placed lobster from the U.S. and Canada on its do-not-eat “red list” in 2022. Some retailers pulled lobster from stores after the recommendation. Judge John Woodcock ruled in February that the fishermen made a case that they suffered damage to their industry's reputation as a result of the red-listing after the aquarium made a bid in the U.S. District Court in Maine to have the 2023 lawsuit tossed. A spokesperson for the aquarium said the institution filed an appeal, but Woodcock's ruling means the lawsuit is moving forward. “Reputation and goodwill cannot be adequately replaced through awarding damages and this injury lingers as long as the ‘red listing' does,” Woodcock wrote. The lobster industry, based largely in Maine, is one of the most lucrative fisheries in the U.S., valued at more than half a billion dollars at the docks last year. Entanglement in lobster gear is also one of the most significant threats to the North Atlantic right whale, which numbers less than 400. The aquarium has a right to communicate its recommendations to the public, said Emerson Brown, the spokesperson for the aquarium. Brown said the aquarium appealed "to protect our ability to share critical information with the public.” The Maine Lobstermen's Association, one of the groups that filed the lawsuit, described Woodcock's decision as “significant” in a statement. “Maine lobstermen have been stewards of the ocean for generations, and we are committed to defending our livelihood against baseless claims," said Patrice McCarron, executive director of the association. At sunset, the male American Woodcock – a plump, robin-sized bird – walks slowly on short legs from the cover of the forest to a nearby clearing. After a few sharp calls, the woodcock takes flight. As he spirals upward, slim, stiff feathers at his wingtips create a curious twittering. At the apex of his flight, the woodcock circles, then descends in a slow spiral, putt-putting like a tiny car about to run out of gas. The woodcock's odd looks and sounds have earned him many colorful nicknames. The most memorable? Timberdoodle!More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? March 3 was World Wildlife Day, a day to celebrate and raise awareness about plants and animals that also share our planet. Conservation isn't just for one day. It's something that we all can take part in every day. Quinn Heist, Environmental Education Specialist with the Bureau of State Parks shared the importance of conservation. Quinn: Yeah, so World Wildlife Day was created on the anniversary of the passing of CITES, which is the Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species. So, it was a day that was created after that to kind of, you know, mark the importance of wildlife and, you know, the flora and fauna that we share the planet with and, to talk about the importance of conserving them. Asia: So, Quinn, like we said, conservation it's important and it should matter to every person. How does it impact our daily lives? Quinn: It's important not only because plants and animals have intrinsic value, they deserve to be here just because we share the planet with them and they have just as much right to the planet as we do, but also ecological value. They provide ecological services to us. Can you imagine how hard it would be for farmers to pollinate all of their plants if they didn't have bees to pollinate them for them? Do you know, trees provide runoff assistance? So, when it rains, it doesn't take all of our soil, and you know into the rivers you know we have our roots from our trees that you know slowdown that water and provide you know storm mitigation which is really important. Conservation is just something that we need to do to maintain our planet and to you know make sure it's okay for the future. Asia: They need us as much as we need them. Pennsylvania has a rich variety of plants and animals. What are some of the unique species that people may not realize that's here in our state? Quinn: The wildlife of Pennsylvania is great, and its wildlife is so cool and I'm so into it because it changes seasonally, right? Right now, it's the spring, so we have Woodcock that are doing their sky dances, so you can go out and see their mating rituals where the male Woodcock, you know, tries to attract a mate. We have vernal pools, so all of the amphibians are, you know, making their down there to give birth, to lay eggs. For the future of amphibian kind. We have so many awesome things, a variety of mammal species, you know, bobcats are super awesome, black bears, so many things that are out there to explore if you just get out into nature, state parks, or even just your backyard, right? There's some awesome wildlife, even in urban environments, opossums and raccoons and fun things running around to see and to experience. Listen to the podcast to hear the full conversation. In the southeast, by mid-December, most hunters turn their attention away from whitetail deer and solely focus on waterfowl hunting. Wood ducks and Canadian geese can be found anywhere there's water. Many folks decoy puddle ducks and divers on the coastal plains, and lakes offer great opportunities for mallards and teal. But there is one migratory bird that most waterfowlers rarely glimpse: the American woodcock. Woodcock arrive in the South each fall under the cover of darkness. By sunrise, they are tucked away in dense cover. However, if you don't mind putting a few miles on your boots beside a good bird dog, hunting American woodcock in the southeast is a great way to get out of the blind and into the woods.
Send us a textThis was in the "good ol' days" of ruffed grouse hunting in southeast Minnesota. Back when the daily bag limit for woodcock was 5 birds. Hunting with a buddy Russ and his lab Char, we shot 19 ruffs and 14 woodcock in two days of hunting. I had tried for several years for this combination limit. It was tough because it was a lucky day for me to even see five woodcock in a long day of hunting. I've been told that was because the majority of migraters funneled down the Mississippi River bottomlands, rather than dispersed across the landscape as they are further north. Another case of me trying to shoot birds where they weren't. I've had good luck, sometimes underserved, that's allowed me to take a few of my dual limits, but this was exceptional luck.

Most people associate American woodcock with the Northwoods. However, they are common throughout the entire eastern half of the United States over the course of their fall and spring migrations. During the woodcock migration, these plump, bug-eyed brown birds utilize very similar habitat types across each state, albeit habitat that is comprised of very different species of trees and shrubs across their lengthy flight.

Dan and Paul, the Wandering DMs, discuss the right number of players for D&D and other TTRPGs. How many is too many? How few is too few? What factors play into choosing the right range of party size for your adventure design? Team size and team composition affect team processes and team outcomes. The optimal size (and composition) of teams is debated and will vary depending on the task at hand. At least one study of problem-solving in groups showed an optimal size of groups at four members. Other works estimate the optimal size between 5–12 members or a number of members that can consume two pizzas. Writers such as Belbin (1981, 1993), Woodcock (1989), Margerison and McCann (1990), Davis et al. (1992), Parker (1990), and Spencer and Pruss (1992) focused on team roles and how these affected team performance. These studies suggested that team performance was a function of the number and type of roles team members played. The number of roles for optimal performance varied from 15 (Davis et al., 1992) to four (Parker, 1990). This variation has been attributed to how roles were defined. Regarding composition, all teams will have an element of homogeneity and heterogeneity. The more homogeneous the group, the more cohesive it will be. The more heterogeneous the group, the greater the differences in perspective and increased potential for creativity, but also the greater potential for conflict. This description uses material from the Wikipedia article "Team", which is released under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share-Alike License 3.0.
If I could smell a bird, walk effortlessly through thick brush, and cover ten times as much ground as the average human, Woodcock hunting would be a breeze. If I had a dog which could do all these things, Woodcock hunting would be even more of a breeze. Unfortunately I can't smell birds, I'm a slow walker, and I don't have a dog. The problem is that I've grown increasingly fond of hunting American woodcock. I am a dog-less hunter with a young family and limited time to hunt, so pounding the ground in search of good woodcock cover just isn't an option. As a lifelong deer hunter and avid trapper, I do more than 50% of my scouting on a computer. It might seem a a bit unorthodox to adapt this aspect of my deer hunting to woodcock hunting. But so far, it's paid off.
