Join Us for this Virtual Townhall Event: Wolves, Lessons for California HOWL for Wildlife welcomes Justin Webb (Executive Director of the Foundation for Wildlife Management) and Jessi Johnson (Government Affairs Director, Wyoming Wildlife Federation.) Wolves are on the cusp of exponential population growth in California. The known wolf population nearly doubled in California in 2024 and is now reaching past 70 animals, with 9 packs acknowledged and several additional "areas of wolf activity" identified. California could trend towards 300+ wolves in CA by 2027. Wolf numbers may grow faster than management practices and policies can evolve, and a wildlife and ecosystem crisis could be the result. This Townhall will be a forum to learn from experts who know their way around wolf issues - including policy and practices of management. This is the beginning of several deep dives into one of the most contentious and complex wildlife issues we have in California, and really throughout North America. Our goal at HOWL is to build deeper education into this topic, and broaden support for successful adaptive management which supports both wild and human ecosystems. The wolf management plans for California are nearly 10 years old and need to be updated. Wolf numbers may soon warrant a delisting from "endangered status", or at least down-listing in California. Plan updates and ESA/CESA changes will surely take 1-2 years to complete, during which time the wolf population in CA could grow 3-5x from current numbers. The time to start discussions that lead to plan updates is now. After RSVP you'll receive an email with an link to the HOWL membership page and to the CDFW Gray Wolf information page. This is a members only event, please join HOWL for Wildlife. We look forward to sharing this conversation with you, and look forward to working as a community for the success of wild ecosystems! ** #wolves #wolf #graywolf #hunting #california #conservation #wildlife #wildlifeconservation #wildlifemanagement #livestock #ranching #elkhunting #bearhunting #muledeer #deerhunting #howl #howlpack #wolfpack #howlforwildlife #colorado #oregon #washington
On today's episode is Grayson Highfield, who was part of the Women Hunt 2023 class. Grayson currently lives up in Wyoming and really enjoys spending time outdoors, especially with her horses riding in the backcountry, writing and currently working for the Wyoming Wildlife Federation as their outreach coordinator. We touched on a lot of different topics during this conversation about life growing up, writing, getting her first horse and the decision to apply to the Women Hunt program and how that has changed her outlook on a lot of different things for the better! Take 5 minutes to lead, take action and help the hunting community! Jess Johnson with the Wyoming Wildlife Federation maps out the status of legislation being developed, and the need for hunting community engagement and support NOW. This is an opportunity to lead and help establish better laws that continue to support and favor hunting and trapping, while penalizing and deterring truly unacceptable behavior. Background: the Daniel, WY "wolf cruelty incident" has spurred a national outcry for laws that have more teeth int them... This demand included a coalition of 1000s of hunters and 70+ hunting industry organizations. Legislative Next Steps: in early October the Travel, Recreation, Wildlife and Cultural Resources Committee will review and update proposed legislation that comes out of a "Predator Mgmt Working Group/SubCommittee". Current Need for Legislation Improvements: the legislative process is often messy and the proposed law here is not fully baked, so we as hunters can steer it towards a better statute and more likely success on the way to the WY Governor's desk. - email the committee leadership: Chairwoman, Senator Wendy Schuler and Chairwoman (Wendy.Schuler@wyoleg.gov ) , Representative Sandy Newsome ( Sandy.Newsome@wyoleg.gov ) - Identify yourself as a hunter who values wildlife, fair chase and the need for simple, successful and effective legislation - Request that the proposed "Cruelty to Wildlife" legislation be amended to (1) remove all mention of motorized and over-snow vehicles to simplify and focus the legislation and (2) move the new law into Title 23 (wildlife laws) for better implementation and to maintain its legal relationship to wildlife while eliminating potential complications involving hunting and trapping. - Cc your email to include Jessi Johnson at Wyoming Wildlife Federation so that she knows the hunting community is speaking out. jessijohnson@wyomingwildlife.org - Finally, share this call to action in your community. When we are silent, we are subject to the whims or mistakes of others. When we lead and are proactive, our community can define the future and maintain a role as stewards and standard bearers. *** #wyomingwildlife #advocacy #wildlife #hunting #wolf #wolves #hunting #legislation #conservation #wildlifemanagement #wildlifeconservation #predators #wyoming
Let's grow the HOWL Pack... Please share. Go to HOWL for Wildlife Action Center to read and sign on to our HOWL Pack letter regarding the unacceptable behavior this podcast focuses on. Hunters and the hunting community, via the Wyoming Wildlife Federation, are playing a key role in guiding new legislation in WY which will (1) identify (2) punish and (3) deter the wildly cruel and bizarre conduct that all of us were offended by. This incident has directly, negatively impacted the entire hunting community in North America this year. The anti-hunting industry made this behavior it's front page leading story when talking about hunting, including completely unrelated and highly regulated, legal and ethical mtn lion hunting in CO. Listen in to this conversation as Jess Johnson (Wy Wildlife Fed.) unpacks the process and progress taking place in WY, with bi-partisan efforts to finely tune the laws there, while absolutely ensuring protection and support for hunting, predator mgmt., trapping, and conservation. As the leaves turn and the air chills, "Wild Things & Wild Places" returns with a compelling two-part series that delves deep into the heart of Wyoming's wilderness. Featuring Brian Nesvik, the seasoned Director of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, these concise 20-minute episodes pack a punch, unraveling the story of a landscape and its inhabitants emerging from a brutal winter. In the first episode, we journey alongside Director Nesvik as he outlines the remarkable resilience of Wyoming's wildlife. The recent winter's severity tested the limits of survival. The narrative takes a turn as we dig into the pressing issue of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), a concerning wildlife health challenge that has been on the radar of conservationists and wildlife managers across the country. Nesvik shares insights on the disease's impact in Wyoming and the steps being taken to manage its spread—a conversation that's both timely and crucial for anyone invested in the future of North America's wild spaces. And when the hard talk ends, gather 'round for the 'Campfire Chat' segment—a unique feature that caps off each episode with reflections, anecdotes, and a moment of camaraderie that reminds us why these wild places matter to all of us. Don't forget, the exploration doesn't end here. Tune in next Tuesday for the next installment of revelations and wildlife wisdom. So, as the wild calls, will you answer? As the flames of the day's conversations dwindle to a warm, inviting glow, "Wild Things & Wild Places" welcomes you to another intimate Campfire Chat. This session shines a light on a voice that resonates with passion and purpose—Jessi Johnson of the Wyoming Wildlife Federation. Jaden Bales is a sportsman and western hunting tag expert from Wyoming. He's written for outdoor media websites like Rokslide and Modern Huntsman, and has appeared regularly on podcasts such as Eastman's Elevated and the Rich Outdoors. When he's not hunting or talking about hunting, he's advocating for wildlife as the communications director for Wyoming Wildlife Federation, an organization that provides leadership in conservation for Wyoming's wildlife, hunters, and anglers through policy, education, advocacy, and habitat projects. We did a deep dive into western hunting, from some of Jaden's personal stories, to how he helps people find good opportunities through his new venture, Hunt West. A few days after this recording, I hired Jaden for a consultation. He put a lot of effort into producing a custom package for me to help me achieve some of my hunting goals and understand where and how I need to be applying for tags. Well worth it for anyone from new hunters trying to understand the system to experienced sportsmen looking for some new opportunities or places to hunt. One aspect of this podcast is that it gives me an avenue to connect with people that I admire and can learn something from. I found Jaden's early hunting stories to be very relatable to my own experiences so far, and he's been able to advance as an outdoorsman to the point where he's having consistent success and some amazing adventures, so it was nice to pick his brain a bit, and I hope you enjoy the conversation. Even if you aren't into hunting, this is about growth and love for the outdoors. (Fremont County, WY)- The Wyoming Wildlife Federation is gearing up for Camo at the Capital on February 2nd in Cheyenne. Jess Johnson with WWF joins the County 10 podcast to invite you to the big event. Wyoming Wildlife Federation is based out of Lander and they would love to see some folks from Fremont County at Camo at the Capital. Jess will tell you more about the event, involve us in some bills with Wyoming Wildlife Federation and she gives us an insight on things to watch and look for as the 2023 General Session has started. I was fortunate enough to attend Camo at the Capital last year and it was an eye opening experience. I think many people in Wyoming, including myself, take for granted the public access, hunting/fishing opportunities, and wildlife. The only way to protect it is to stay in the know on what is happening with government officials, during legislation and how things could or are changing in the state. Wyoming Wildlife Federation wants to make sure everyone has the chance to use their voice. Jess Johnson at Camp at the Capital 2022 Jess Johnson has been with Wyoming Wildlife Federation for 7 years and has a major passion for advocating for conservation in the state. She travels globally learning about management of species, lands and how she can bring that here. She frequently is found outdoors hunting, whether it's on a solo hunt or a hunt with friends. I am sure she prefers the outdoors over being at the capital for the next month or so, which is where you will find her. h/t WWF You can follow along with what is happening in session here. Aaron and Bill host Bob Budd to wax on the Wyoming Wildlife and Natural Resources Trust Fund, which utilizes a unique model to conduct habitat and restoration projects across Wyoming. These projects help restore and enhance the lands and waters that sportsmen and women from Wyoming and across the country have the privilege to enjoy. The Wyoming state legislature is currently considering adding $75 million to the fund, which will then be leveraged to create about $50 million annually to conduct this excellent work in perpetuity. For one of the least populated and most wildlife rich states in the country, this is an exceptional resource that also benefit all Americans who visit. You don't want to miss Bob's keen mind, exuberance, and enthusiasm for Wyoming's incredible natural resources. Links: https://wwnrt.wyo.gov/home https://wyomingwildlife.org Show notes: 5:30 – Introduction of Bob Budd. 8:05 – What have these guys been up to outdoors recently? 10:27 – Bob explains his childhood and the path which led him to where he is today. 13:15 – The Wyoming Wildlife and Natural Resources Trust Fund – how it got started, what it's supposed to do, and day to day activities… 17:05 - Details behind the structure and approach to funding for the Wyoming Wildlife and Natural Resources Trust Fund. 19:30 - How does the Wyoming Wildlife and Natural Resources Trust Fund get projects and take them to completion. 22:12 - Conservation easement funding. 23:37 - How many applications does the Wyoming Wildlife and Natural Resources Trust Fund receive and how many organizations do they work with? 27:00 – Short break for a message from our partner podcast, Artemis Sportswomen! Are you following @NWFOutdoors on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube? 28:23 - The history of the Wyoming Wildlife Federation. 31:00 - How has the Wyoming Wildlife and Natural Resources Trust Fund helped hunters specifically? 33:30 – “They're catching 30” rainbows in town!!” It used to be full of refrigerators. 34:56 - Bob tells a good story… “I had no idea this state was this state…” 38:12 - The possibility of being fully funded. 40:16 - One of the unique things about the trust is that they utilize the interest from this fund to continue to perpetually do these projects. Bob talks about how this works. 46:13 - Mechanically what has to happen now and what can sportsmen and sportswomen tell their representative? 47:36 - What could other states learn from Wyoming? 50:51 - Wyoming does wildlife conservation and habitat restoration in a special way. Look it up and participate. 54:22 - Closing statement from Bob Budd – his has a book coming out! “There's great stuff going on everywhere.”
Jess Johnson leads Wyoming Wildlife Federation's efforts on behalf of wildlife through policy and local advocacy. She grew up ranching in Montana, Northern California and Wyoming, and has a deep appreciation for wildlife and wild lands. She's a bowhunter, co-founder and advisory board member of Artemis Sportswomen, and serves as the policy seat on the board of directors for 2% for Conservation.I reached out to Jess in the hopes of understanding a bit more about some of the recent developments and changes happening in wildlife management at the level of state policy. We talked about the current state of hunting, federal and state protections around wolves and grizzly bears, Jess's once-in-a-lifetime hunt for Dall sheep and caribou in Canada's Northwest Territories, and the need for empathy and cooperation in conversations of wildlife management. The remote Red Desert is a place of dreams, albeit dreams sometimes replete with choking alkali dust, freezing winds, gumbo mud, and the scattered, bleached bones of the unlucky or unfit of all species. But it's a place of elk, toad mule deer, herds of pronghorn and the thunder of flushing sage hens, too – all of which have to be able to move long distances to range and water and shelter from the mighty elements, in the age-old way of desert dwellers, if they are to survive. Join us with Josh Coursey of the Muley Fanatic Foundation and Joy Bannon of the Wyoming Wildlife Federation to learn about the work being done to identify and conserve the most critical migration paths, habitat and heritage of this last, great empty place.

I Got A Tag, Now What? With Jaden Bales Show Notes: A lot of new hunters have no idea where to start when it comes to prepping for a hunt. They got a tag, but they have no idea what to do next. Longtime hunter Jaden Bales has developed a system for hunting prep. He, like me, thinks that you have to be in the hunting mindset year-round. Start your scouting early. Learn the land before the season starts. You can look at weather reports and maps to figure out where the water is, and that's going to massively affect where the animals are going to be. Your local area game and fish sites are going to be a great source of information, too. You can also reach out to local experts; just be sure and ask the right questions. You don't want to be “that guy!” Remember, these guys get asked about the basics all the time, so try and get that stuff figured out on your own first. Jaden also works with the Wyoming Wildlife Federation to help conservation efforts in his home state. To learn how you can help, go to wyomingwildlife.org. What's Inside: ABH: Always Be “Hunting”. Study the lot as soon as you pull a tag. How to get info online about the area. What questions to ask the local experts. Mentioned in this episode: Phoenix Shooting Bags save 20% with code johnstallone Days In The Wild JohnStallone.me Wyoming Wildlife Federation Jaden Bales on Instagram Short Description: So you pulled a hunting tag; now what are you supposed to do? Longtime hunter and friend of the show Jaden Bales tells us how to properly prepare for a hunt by studying the area before the season even starts, plus shares tips and stories about how to take that scouting knowledge and use it on the hunt. I grew up watching Lower 48ers take Alaskan salmon back to their homes and in October I took a Wyoming mule deer back to mine. Traveling to someone else's spot to live out a dream can be a complex issue and one that often leads to debate. For every local angry about meat leaving the state, there's a slice of the local economy dependent upon it. We're all Public Land Owners, but what sort of ethics should a hunter or angler travel with? Jess Johnson, Jaden Bales (both of the Wyoming Wildlife Federation) and I talk about this and how to pack for a road trip in this episode.
Kevin Monteith, assistant professor at the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Wyoming joins the podcast to talk about the Monteith Shop for large ungulate research, his team's research on mule deer, including causes of their decline, habitat needs, migration patterns, summer and winter range, competition with elk, the Deer Elk Ecology Research project, the Wyoming Range Mule Deer Project, the Ungulate Compendium, the Rose Petal Hypothesis, why science is more that the one piece of observational data you witnessed that one time while hunting, and more. In this episode, I talk with Jess Johnston about the recent headlines seen around the world, highlighting the legislative changes in Alaska which would allow for the hunting of bear cubs and wolf pups in dens. This was obviously met by a widespread outcry against the move. However, as we always try to do on the podcast, I was keen to take a step back and really understand what had happened. The same day the news broke I called Jess to get more information, which sent her down a rabbit warren for an entire week. Normally I would cut these shows down and insert concise summaries, but Jess does such a great job, I have left the show as recorded: the full 30mins around the topic. Jess is the Legislative Liaison and Advocacy Coordinator at Wyoming Wildlife Federation and also sits on the board for directors for 2% For Conservation. She is my go-to person for policy implications to wildlife in North America, and I am really pleased to have her back on the show. I e-scouted three spots for a potential mule deer hunt in Wyoming and had Wyoming Wildlife Federation's marketing director Jaden Bales evaluate my spots. Without giving the specific areas away, I breakdown why I chose them, and Jaden evaluates my work. We discuss vegetation, land texture, how long to let a pocket rest if other boots have been in there, elk vs. mule deer territory and chronic wasting disease.

Being an environmentalist doesn't necessarily limit your outdoor recreation pastimes to hiking, mountain biking, skiing or rock climbing. Those of us who indulge these so-called action sports should remember that we share the natural world with folks whose connection to the outdoors also includes activities like hunting and fishing. Personally I took up fly fishing a few years ago and pardon the pun I'm hooked. And on a trip to Wyoming in 2017 I met a young woman who has a passion for hunting. Jessi Johnson is an environmental activist who shared with me the story of a remarkable experience she had while hunting elk in the Wild. Along with one's passion for the outdoors must also come an understanding of the balance between life and death. As a bow hunter Jessi Johnson knows firsthand the responsibilities and obligations that go along with being a full participant in the natural world. Though she hunts for sport, the elk she kills for food bring her closer to the wilderness she aims to protect. In the edition of the Joy Trip Project we explore the seeming contradictions of wildlife conservation through hunting. This story details a vivid description an actual elk hunt. Though not overly graphic sensitive listeners should be advised… “We are all filled with a longing for the wild. There are few culturally sanctioned antidotes for this yearning. We were taught to feel shame for such a desire. We grew our hair long and used it to hide our feelings. But the shadow of Wild Woman still lurks behind us during our days and in our nights. No matter where we are, the shadow that trots behind us is definitely four-footed.” ― Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Women Who Run With the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype Jessi Johnson is the co-founder of Artemis Sportswomen and the Public Lands Coordinator at the Wyoming Wildlife Federation. You can learn about environmental conservation through hunting and other outdoor activities at wyomingwildlifefederation.org Our theme music is provided by Jake Shimabukuro.
