Gabe Karns from Ohio tells us about a few wild hog hunts in Alabama. One that was mistaken for a gang murder, one that turned into a piglet for pecans swap and another with 20 ice cream sandwiches eaten in a gas station parking lot and a road side emergency along I-85. Seth Trokey from Illinois fills us in on how his state is handling the pandemic and tells us about the roller coaster of excitement and gear failures that ended with him getting a buck that scored over 150 inches this past season. Rex Ainslie is a Regional Wildlife Supervisor for Michigan's DNR. We discuss trying to find balance managing natural resources. Between games species and pollinators, hunters and non consumptive users. We also talk about the increasing Black Bear population and their interactions with humans. Bob Busch is on with us, while we record at his Buckley's Mountain Side Canoes. Ron Hamel and his son Jordan join in as well.

Jordan Browne is a producer for Michigan Out of Doors TV. They travel all around the state putting out episodes every week, all year round. As many know, he is a top notch deer and turkey hunter. I was surprised to find out that he’s had continued success elk hunting out in Colorado and was able to get a successful deer hunt on film at the young age of 14. We talk about some of his more advanced deer hunting tactics and how he was able to spot and stalk his buck this year in Michigan. He lets us know if he could pick any place to live in Michigan for hunting where that would be. We also talk about some of his most memorable trips and also the most dangerous ones.

Chris is a fish biologist with the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The past couple years they have stayed at Island View Resort in November working on a Cisco project. These Herring are planted in the Saginaw Bay area to help rehabilitate the deep water population there. I learned that Herring can live well over 20 years. They are a great food source for Walleye, which acts as a good buffer between the Walleye and Perch. Chris shares some cool things to check out such as local fish hatcheries and ways to get involved, whether you want to volunteer or make a career in natural resources.

Hunt to Eat is an apparel brand out of Colorado that raises a lot of money for conservation.  They collaborate with organizations, some of which are BHA, TRCP, NWF, Phesants Forever, and Artemis. Also with outdoor leaders like Randy Newberg, Remi Warren and Hank Shaw. And companies such as Federal Premium, Phelps Game Calls and OnX. Mahting stayed up at Island View Resort in Michigan’s Eastern upper penninsula with our friends, Ryan Cavanaugh and Jason Meekhof. We spent the week duck and Woodcock hunting. Jason was able to get his first ever ducks and Mahting got his first Timberdoodle.  We also ate a lot of great food and just had a good time. We discuss and learn the importance of first aid in the field when my dog starts bleeding bad in an area with no access to a vet. We discuss the importance of introducing people to wild game with something they are comfortable with like a cheese burger and easy and delicious recipes for sandwhiches, Geese, and Antelope. Also Mahting shares the story of his bucket list hunt for Caribou, in Alaska, north of the Arctic Circle.

Nick Otto, host of The Huntavore podcast of the Sportsmen's Nation network. Nick hosts this episode and interviews Greg and I about our charter boat and fishing in the U.P. Katie DeLorenzo is the Southwest coordinator for Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, covering Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. We discuss the unique experience she had growing up in a family of hunters and wildlife biologists. The emotions of hunting and how her being a highly competitive athlete growing up, mirrors some of the experience she's had in the mountains hunting. After moving on from sports she has gotten serious into hunting. In 6 short years she has had great success and gone on some amazing hunts. Big Horn Sheep, Oryx, Antelope, Deer, and Elk to name a few. As well as joining and assisting others in Mountain Goat and Ibex hunts. She shares an awesome story of her success Oryx hunting in her home state, New Mexico.

Dustin Nichols serves on MI Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers Board of Directors. He gives me a plan of what to do, to be successful turkey hunting. We cover calling and scouting. Finding roosting trees. When to stay put and when to get aggressive. We discuss great memories made with family in Michigans Upper and Lower Peninsulas. Tom McGraw is on the North American Board of Directors for Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. Tom schools me on a wide variety of fly fishing discussion. Dry flies, wet flies, eggs, streamers, swinging and spay rods. We talk finding common ground with folks to be productive for wild places and those that inhabit them. He shares great stories of Salmon, Steelhead, and Brown Trout on the Pere Marquette River, the Norfork in Arkansas, and summers in Montana. Also, Bone Fish and Tarpon in the Florida Keys and huge Rainbow Trout and King Salmon on the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia, where massive coastal Brown Bears aren't used to sharing their rivers. With all the great adventures he's been on though, there's nothing he enjoys more than the relationships made and creating memories with friends and family.

Bobby Roop of Michigan Whitetail Pursuit. MWP is a compilation DVD of men and women, boys and girls, all over the state of Michigan. They hunt bucks and does of all sizes, providing a full spectrum of different hunters and locations that just about anyone can enjoy and relate to. We talk filming hunts and road kill pot pie. As well as making memories with family, including grandpa, who is in his 80's and still getting after it. Ryan Cavanaugh is Co-Chair of the Michigan Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. A long time Pheasants Forever member and avid bird hunter with his GSP Daly. Grew up in southwest Michigan and now lives in the Upper Peninsula. He shares the story of the 318 pound buck he got this season. He grew up hunting to eat and feed his family. Has a lot of great memories hunting with his dad and their dogs and making memorable meals. Shares stories of encounters with wolves and coyotes and some of his favorite places around Michigan.

Ron Boehme is the host of The Hunting Dog Podcast. He has hunted all over the country for many different birds with his Bracco Italianos. Got introduced to hunting through trap shooting with his buddies growing up in Chicago. Ron is a frequent guest on the Meat Eater TV show and Podcast. We discuss the benefit of and his involvement with the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association. He loves old shotguns, Pheasant hunting South Dakota and spending time at Beer Mountain in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia.

Dr. Karl Malcolm is the Wildlife Ecologist for the Southwestern region of The U.S. Forest Service. He has many published works, has been featured in many articles and been a frequent guest on The Meat Eater TV show and podcast. He has hunted across the country for moose, turkey, elk, pronghorn, mule deer, whitetail, and Mearns quail to name a few. He grew up around Traverse City Michigan and attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He then went over to the University of Wisconsin Madison where he earned his masters and PHD in Wildlife Ecology. He has done extensive work with black bears both in the U.S. and in China. He now resides in New Mexico with his wife and daughter. We discuss how small and tight the hunting and fishing community is. The variety of animals and habitat in New Mexico. The importance and influence of Aldo Leopold. Also, we discuss the importance of bringing together both the hunting and non hunting community for the benefit of the future of what we love.

David is the co-owner of Common Hunter. They sell over a dozen products including SD card readers and ozone machines. Born and raised in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. He shares an intense story of a wolf attack up there. We discuss mobile hunting for deer in northern Michigan and Southern Ohio. Black bear hunting in Michigan and Manitoba. His grandpa owning and breeding some of the best beagles in the nation and the hundreds of hares they've hunted over the year.

Courtney Nicolson got started hunting while living in New York City and becoming a producer for the Sportsman Channel. We discuss groups she's participated with such as Artemis Sportswomen and Sisterhood of the Outdoors that get women together for fun hunting and fishing trips. We discuss wild game recipes from Hank Shaw and Wild and Whole. Courtney is a mentor for other women and girls getting started with hunting and is a hunter education instructor. My brother Greg Lipple and I discuss our late antlerless and muzzle loader season hunts. Our hunts in the Michigan counties of Marquette, Mackinac, Montmorency, Oscoda, Alcona and Lapeer. Doe management hunts and the unique circumstance Greg got put in, where he wasn't sure if he should shoot a buck on the last day of the season. We also discuss some of our lessons learned and plans for next year.
