Recent data from the CDC shows that Utah has the highest rates of nonfatal drug overdoses in the United States. Salt Lake Harm Reduction Project (SHRP) is trying to make naloxone more readily available for Utahns, all in the hopes of reducing this unsettling trend. Executive Director of SHPR MacKenzie Bray spoke to Maria Shilaos about efforts to bring opioid overdoses down. International Overdose Awareness Day is on Sunday, August 31st.

A new study out of Oregon shows that around one-in-ten teenagers enrolled in Medicaid spent several days stuck in the emergency room after being admitted for a mental health crisis. The 27-year-old who allegedly shot and killed four people at a Midtown Manhattan office building yesterday carried a note in his pocket saying he had CTE, a brain disease linked to repeated hits to the head. That's according to a police source who spoke to ABC News. There's no evidence thus far that the suspect had CTE, but it has sparked renewed interest in brain injuries and how they can affect a person's mental state. Maria Shilaos spoke to Dr. Benjamin Christiansen, a clinical neuropsychologist at Ogden Clinic, to get more information on CTE and brain injuries overall. Dr. Christiansen also talks about how we in Utah are doing when it comes to protecting our kids' developing brains.

Taekwondo students from Utah recently won 12 medals at the World Taekwondo Hanmadang. These students came from World Martial Arts in Holladay. It was their first international tournament. Drier conditions are expected in Texas today, where floods killed at least 133 people. Roughly 100 people are still missing. Search and rescue/recovery crews continue their search but now, it's a search for bodies. How do search efforts change when it moves from rescue to recovery? And what about the volunteers working tirelessly through the muck and mud? Professor Scott Hammond teaches management at Utah State University -- you've probably heard his Management Minute on KSL NewsRadio. What you might not know is that he's also a member of the Utah County Search and Rescue Team. Maria Shilaos speaks to him about the kinds of search and recovery efforts and processes that would be underway in Texas right now.
The Central Wasatch Commission is looking at the feasibility of implementing a shuttle system to take folks up Millcreek Canyon. While the plan is still in its infancy, Millcreek Mayor and board chair for the CWC Jeff Silvestrini tells Maria Shilaos that a shuttle system would go a long way in helping the crowds that recreate in the canyon.
Major cuts to public broadcasting are moving closer to a reality after Vice President JD Vance had to cast a tie-breaking procedural vote on a rescissions package late last night. The package would gut funding to public broadcasters like PBS and NPR, both of whom have spoken out against the proposal. They're defending the value of public broadcasting while also pushing back on accusations of bias. Dr. Dale Cressman, professor emeritus at the School of Communications at Brigham Young University speaks with Maria Shilaos to share his take on the situation. Dr. Cressman is also a former journalist and was a former news director at both a public radio station and a public television station.
As football season prepares to get underway, Congress is working to level the playing field regarding name, image, and likeness, also known as NIL. Congress is currently debating legislation that would make the rules around NIL the same in each state.
