The 27-year-old who allegedly shot and killed four people at a Midtown Manhattan office building yesterday carried a note in his pocket saying he had CTE, a brain disease linked to repeated hits to the head. That's according to a police source who spoke to ABC News. There's no evidence thus far that the suspect had CTE, but it has sparked renewed interest in brain injuries and how they can affect a person's mental state. Maria Shilaos spoke to Dr. Benjamin Christiansen, a clinical neuropsychologist at Ogden Clinic, to get more information on CTE and brain injuries overall. Dr. Christiansen also talks about how we in Utah are doing when it comes to protecting our kids' developing brains.

The start of school is now just a few weeks away and all the talk of vaccines is creating a lot of confusion for parents. Dr. Richard Ferguson, President-Black Physicians of Utah, joined Maria Shilaos for this installment of Health Matters on Midday, speaking about the safety of both childhood and adult vaccines.
Taekwondo students from Utah recently won 12 medals at the World Taekwondo Hanmadang. These students came from World Martial Arts in Holladay. It was their first international tournament. Maria Shilaos sat down with Grandmaster Jinyong Kwon and Master Susan Kwon to find out more about this competition and the Utahns involved.

The Central Wasatch Commission is looking at the feasibility of implementing a shuttle system to take folks up Millcreek Canyon. While the plan is still in its infancy, Millcreek Mayor and board chair for the CWC Jeff Silvestrini tells Maria Shilaos that a shuttle system would go a long way in helping the crowds that recreate in the canyon.
As football season prepares to get underway, Congress is working to level the playing field regarding name, image, and likeness, also known as NIL. Congress is currently debating legislation that would make the rules around NIL the same in each state. Major cuts to public broadcasting are moving closer to a reality after Vice President JD Vance had to cast a tie-breaking procedural vote on a rescissions package late last night. The package would gut funding to public broadcasters like PBS and NPR, both of whom have spoken out against the proposal. They're defending the value of public broadcasting while also pushing back on accusations of bias. Search and rescue/recovery crews continue their search but now, it's a search for bodies. How do search efforts change when it moves from rescue to recovery? A majority of Utahns want lawmakers to do more to protect the environment, even if it means slower economic growth. That's according to a new study from Utah State University. A new art exhibit at the Salt Lake City Public Library aims to give a voice to Utah's homeless community. Amplify Utah is a local nonprofit that works to highlight inclusive journalism and storytelling. They are sponsoring the exhibit, which is called "In Their Words."
