When Tough Guys Trade Fear for Love — With Mike Giardina

Mike Giardina has spent decades grinding.Being tough. Gritty — in the U.S. Navy, as an Operations Specialist 2nd Class. As a high-level CrossFit athlete and Seminar Staff Flowmaster. And as a survivor of trauma. He'd grown up dodging the shrapnel of his father's explosive outbursts, using drugs to cope. He watched friends overdose around him. And after he left the Navy in 2009 — while dealing with the shock of reentry into civilian life — his father killed himself. Mike found the body. Fourteen years later, his sister followed suit. At a retreat organized by the Heroic Hearts Project, Mike and other veterans stepped back into their traumas through a supervised psilocybin mushroom ceremony.“I was faced with an extremely concentrated experience of fear,” he says. The experience led him to a profound realization: “The tiny bits of fear that I feel daily, that force me to keep my walls up and protect myself and keep tension within the body — it fucking hit me in the face. Hard,” he says.“And the only way I could get through that fear to the other side was by learning how to let go.” In this episode of the Infinitely Scalable podcast, a host of self-proclaimed recovering “alphas” — win-at-all-costs tough guys obsessed with dominance in the gym and in life — talk about finding a more real kind of strength. The kind of strength that comes with vulnerability. “The shames and the traumas and the embarrassments… we'll bring them with us in so many different ways,” says co-host Tony Ronchi. “At some point, you've got to actually go back to the root to figure out why those things are the way that they are.” Co-host and CrossFit Seminar Staff member Andrew Charlesworth agrees. “The most alpha thing you can do is talk like this to other dudes,” he says.Listen in as the guys share glimpses of their own journeys and how their definition of success has shifted over time. “My metrics of success now are the relationships that I continue to strengthen with my loved ones and my friends,” Mike says. “That's the kind of stuff that really is important to me now.” 60 Minutes Overtime: Veteran faces childhood trauma on psychedelic journey: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/veteran-faces-childhood-trauma-on-psychedelic-journey-60-minutes/Heroic Hearts Project: https://heroicheartsproject.org/---Infinitely Scalable Podcast: Helping entrepreneurs, creatives, and humans everywhere find freedom. In this episode, Joe interviews two members of the Heroic Hearts Project: Founder and President, Jesse Gould; and Director of Development and Head of Family Relations, Allison Wilson. Gould gives a background of Heroic Hearts Project and discusses their current projects and future goals, and Wilson talks about her nonprofit, The Hope Project, and its recent merger with HHP to bring more of a focus to the other side of veteran healing: the families of veterans. While Heroic Hearts and other veteran-aligned organizations have been an answer to many vets unable to find help otherwise (and frustrated with the inconsistencies of the VA), they talk a lot about that missing piece – how crucial it is to have family involved in a veteran's reintegration, and how that healing can impact future generations. "The Veteran's Guide to Psychedelics: A Preparation and Integration Workbook" was recently released, with all proceeds going to HHP, and they are hosting their first Gala event, "Operation: Freedom To Heal," this week, December 5, in Los Angeles. The goal of the event is to fundraise, gather community, and recognize the supporters who have gotten Heroic Hearts to where it is today, and will feature live and silent auctions and a performance by Melissa Etheridge. Our guest today is Jesse Gould, founder and president of the Heroic Hearts Project, a nonprofit pioneering psychedelic therapies for military veterans. After being deployed as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan three times, Jesse founded the Heroic Hearts Project in 2017 to spearhead the acceptance and use of ayahuasca therapy as a means of addressing the current mental health crisis among veterans. His organization has raised over $350,000 in scholarships from donors including Dr. Bronner's, partnered with the world's leading ayahuasca treatment centers, and sponsored psychiatric applications with the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Georgia. Jesse helps shape treatment programs and spreads awareness of plant medicine as a therapeutic method. He has spoken globally about psychedelics and mental health and was recognized as one of the Social Entrepreneurs To Watch For In 2020 by Cause Artist. Today, he will share insights on the importance of providing access to psychedelic medicines for veterans, the limitations of traditional treatment methods, and the need for a new approach to mental health care that prioritizes healing and community support. SummaryJesse Gould, founder of Heroic Hearts Project, discusses the importance of providing access to psychedelic medicines for veterans struggling with PTSD, depression, and anxiety. He shares his personal journey of seeking help for his own mental health issues and the limitations he faced with traditional treatment methods. Jesse emphasizes the need for a new approach to mental health care that goes beyond symptom management and focuses on healing and integration. He also highlights the importance of community support and the role of psychedelics in addressing ancestral trauma and building emotional resilience. Heroic Hearts Project is a nonprofit organization that educates people about the therapeutic potential of psychedelics and connects veterans and their families to these treatments. They provide support and guidance throughout the entire process, from preparation to integration. The organization also conducts research, advocates for policy change, and aims to reestablish supportive veteran communities. Donations can be made on their website, and veterans can apply for their programs. The goal is to provide veterans with life-saving care and a supportive community to aid in their healing journey.TakeawaysAccess to psychedelic medicines can be critical for veterans struggling with mental health issues such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety.Traditional treatment methods often focus on symptom management rather than addressing the root causes of mental health disorders.Psychedelics can be a powerful tool for healing and integration, but they require a supportive container and proper preparation and aftercare. The current mental health care system is not effectively addressing the needs of veterans, and there is a need for a new approach that prioritizes healing and community support.Ancestral trauma and emotional resilience play a significant role in mental health, and psychedelics can help individuals explore and process these aspects of their lives. They discuss how The Hope Project – a nonprofit that supports spouses of veterans, Gold Star Wives, and female veterans with scholarships to psychedelic healing retreats, integration, community, etc. – merged with Heroic Hearts Project, and why this is such a necessary part of the veteran healing story: How does a family hold space for a vet returning to a suddenly alien civilian life (especially after a psychedelic journey)? How does a spouse deal with their own trauma from constant worry and isolation? Wilson and Blest-Hopley are learning that, for many spouses, having their own experience (and with other spouses) has been incredibly beneficial. They talk about: The concept of secondary PTSD (often referred to as ‘compassion fatigue') and the many ways it can manifest How Heroic Hearts is working with Imperial College London to use veteran retreats as real-world observational research The importance of involving family in the healing process, and how positive outcomes can trickle down to children The need for more research into how PTSD and the effects of psychedelics are different in women based on their unique physiology (as most studies have focused on men) and more! In this episode, Joe interviews Dr. Kate Pate: Ph.D. neurophysiologist; Founder and CEO of Coruna Medical; founding board member of the Psychedelic Medicine Association; and Founder of The Way Back, a company that will provide education and coaching services related to military, veteran, and first responder health – often in wilderness settings. She talks about her introduction to psychedelics through the Heroic Hearts Project, where she later served as an integration coach and director of research, looking at psilocybin for traumatic brain injury symptoms, and how the gut microbiome changes after ingesting ayahuasca. She points out that gut health hasn't been a focus of research, but it's now emerging as a key indicator of physical and mental health. So, how do psychedelics, particularly plant-based ones, come into play? Are the long term shifts after an experience related to a change in the bacteria inside of us? She breaks down what a microbiome is and how it changes based on diet; how inflammation is created and the inflammatory cascade that happens after a head injury; how toxins create a stress response similar to an allergic reaction; the frustrations of vets and the limited resources of the VA; the commonality of substance and alcohol use disorders in people coming home from service; the many nonprofits she's worked with; and how important it is to increase science funding from the government. Jesse Gould, a former Army Ranger, was plagued by severe PTSD after he returned home from combat. After quitting his job as an investment banker, selling all of his possessions, and wandering the world, he found himself in an ayahuasca retreat in the jungles of Peru. To his surprise, Jesse found that his symptoms of PTSD disappeared after the retreat, and his life was forever changed. He started HHP in April of 2017 “because I wanted to give my fellow veterans a way to heal their PTSD that had worked for me.”  Since then, Heroic Hearts Project has helped hundreds of veterans overcome their suffering from PTSD by providing them not only with access to psychedelic programs, but with professional coaching, peer support, and other resources to empower them along their healing journeys. While HHP's number one priority is always the direct care of veterans, we're also working tirelessly to support research and advocacy efforts to improve access to psychedelics, offer programs for veteran spouses to better nurture the entire veteran family, and foster a community in which veterans can grow and give back to others who are suffering. This book contains all the information you need to begin your journey of discovery into whether one or more of these psychedelic medicines may help you. You'll find several chapters covering all the basics of psychedelics, from their fascinating history to how these medicines work to how and what you need to move forward with intentionally using psychedelic medicines. Find yourself in one or more of the 23 stories that people from all spectrums of life graciously share here. These stories range from people seeking clarity about their future to wanting to heal from their pain to freeing themselves from addiction to diving deeply into the Divine. While macrodosing (full-on hallucinogenic experience) with these psychedelic medicines for healing is the major focus of the book, there is also a chapter and several stories on microdosing for healing; the advantage of microdosing is that the dose is too small to produce any perceptible effects. 100% of the book proceeds are being donated to The Heroic Hearts Project.

We are in the midst of a psychedelic revolution. It's here. Now the question is whether or not we can approach the conversation with nuance—not something we Americans are not generally celebrated for. Psychedelics force another uncomfortable conversation for many: The power of thought. The suggestibility of your brain while under the influence of psychedelics turns mindfulness into a high-stakes game. We are still in the liminal stages of talking about the mind and mental states with anything like fluency. But our ability to explore this conversation, and put words to feelings, is one of the most freeing forms of language we can practice. For us dudes, this can be especially tough—which is why I'm so glad that a guy like Jesse Gould exists.Gould is founder and president of the Heroic Hearts Project, a nonprofit pioneering psychedelic therapies for military veterans. After being deployed as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan three times, he founded the Heroic Hearts Project in 2017 to spearhead the acceptance and use of ayahuasca therapy as a means of addressing the current mental health crisis among veterans. The Heroic Hearts Project has raised over $350,000 in scholarships from donors, including Dr. Bronner's, and partnered with the world's leading ayahuasca treatment centers. Jesse has spoken globally about psychedelics and mental health—something that's also personal for him, having battled with PTSD and found relief through ayahuasca therapy. During our conversation, we covered marathons, breathwork, and psychedelic therapy for veterans.Enjoy,KyleP.S. If you dig this podcast, will you please leave a short review on Apple Podcasts? Kegan Gill's story is so incredible that the moment we first read it we knew we needed to try and get him on the podcast. We're just lucky we found out about him early on, because he will definitely be a household name soon enough. Without spoiling too much of the story, which he tells eloquently, he was an F/A-18E Super Hornet pilot who experienced an extremely traumatic ejection, fought his way through the physical rehab, but was then laid low again by delayed onset mental health and TBI issues. Our medical system successfully brought Kegan back from the brink of death, but when it came time to get him back to actual health it failed completely. What you'll hear in this conversation are all the ways he took ownership of his recovery journey. We certainly brought Kegan on to tell his story, but he's told his story several times before. What we tried to draw out in this conversation were some key insights about the power of simple lifestyle behaviors to have profound health, fitness, and wellness benefits even in extreme situations. “To hear that there were people out there that were willing to help me out and willing to take care of me and give me everything that I needed to try and get better, that was life changing.” Welcome everyone to the It Matters To Me Podcast, a show that celebrates the random through 1-on-1 conversations with people and the passions they pursue. Today, my guest is Zach Riggle, former U.S. Marine Special Operator and now the COO for the Heroic Hearts Project. Their mission is to build a healing community that helps veterans suffering from military trauma recover and thrive by providing them with safe, supervised access to psychedelic treatments, professional coaching, and ongoing peer support. After Zach's eleven years and four combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, Zach separated from the military and attended MIT as a Sloan Fellow for Innovation and Global Leadership. And while you might think this is going to be a story of one success after another with a background like that, you'd be wrong. No, this is a conversation about Zach's own experience with PTSD and the deeply personal effect it had on him both mentally and physically. And how after a fortunate encounter with a fellow Marine Raider when he seemed to be at his lowest led Zach to an Ayahuasca retreat in Pero that was sponsored by the Heroic Hearts Project. With the stigma around plant-based medicines seemingly shifting across the nation as more and more stories like Zach's are told and backed up with solid scientific research, our talk couldn't be more relevant. It's one I truly treasured and once you listen to it I think you'll understand why. So let's dive right in, here's my talk with Zach Riggle. Integration and accountability are the keys to improving and sustaining your mental health. No one is going to come and save you or do your healing for you. “We have to take responsibility for our own healing,” Kelsi says, “When it comes to starting the process, go up the chain if you have to, go to a civilian if necessary… there are so many resources now in the veteran community that you can call and reach out to that are not within the system that can really, truly help advise you.” Kelsi sheds light on the powerful benefits received from veteran healing/mental health programs like Heroic Hearts Project, Defenders of Freedom, and VETS, which she herself has utilized to heal. What I discuss with Jesse Gould Jesse Gould joins me in this episode of the Passion Struck podcast to discuss his mission to help military veterans struggling with mental trauma and spread awareness of the benefits of psychedelic therapies as an alternative treatment to pharmaceuticals.  For centuries, indigenous healers and Native Americans have used psychedelic plants for therapy and medical treatment. Ayahuasca, for instance, has been used over 5000 years to facilitate personal and collective healing. During ceremonies, healers would often help provide recovery and reconcile the trauma people had experienced. Over the past century, psychedelics were labeled as illicit drugs and prohibited. Jesse's goal is to change that and legalize their use for mental health ailments. 0:00 Teaser and announcements 2:37 Introduction of Jesse Gould 4:28 Participating in the 4x4x48 to support veteran non-profits 7:50 Why he founded the Heroic Hearts Project. 12:17 The benefits of treatments from psilocybin, ayahuasca, and MDMA 17:44 The path to legalizing psychedelic drugs for clinical use 22:43 MDMA intervention is having almost a 66 to 67% success rate 25:36 Why is Big Pharma doing everything it can to block its adoption? 28:36 The protocol in terms of the dosage of MDMA  30:55 How psilocybin is administered 32:22 How is Ketamine used for PTSD 41:58 The nature of side effects and how often they occur 47:40 Why your traumas is what develops you and makes you who you are 51:24 How to obtain services from Heroic Hearts 54:33 Episode wrap-up Where you can find Jesse Gould * Website: https://www.heroicheartsproject.org/ * LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jesse-gould/ * Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/weheroichearts/ * Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heroicheartsproject/ -- Welcome to Passion Struck podcast, a show where you get to join me in exploring the mindset and philosophy of the world's most inspiring everyday heroes to learn their lessons to living intentionally. On this week's podcast, Rad interviews Jesse Gould, founder of the Heroic Hearts Project, Army Ranger veteran, and psychedelic therapy advocate. Jesse talks about the modalities of psychedelic treatment, its benefits for neurogenesis, and how it can bring controlled chaos to your mind to reset it.    Jesse talks about his deployments to Afghanistan and his realization that he was drinking way too much. And, more than that, he started observing his mental state take a turn for the worse.   He shares his discovery of ayahuasca as an alternative treatment. Seeing how none of his efforts as of yet were worth preserving, he decided to go down to Peru to seek a shaman. Jesse details the ceremony, how entering into a psychedelic state brings forth repressed traumas, and the unique way ayahuasca reframes trauma to break the cycle of PTSD.   However, not anyone should just jump in and try ayahuasca. There is preparation needed, both mentally and emotionally, as ayahuasca heightens your senses but your brain interprets the stimuli differently. Therefore, Jesse stresses that being in a safe space is paramount for psychedelic treatment.   Reach out to Jesse and the Heroic Hearts Project through the following links:   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jesse-gould/ Website: https://www.heroicheartsproject.org/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
