Subscribe to our YouTube channel On our political radar this week… Donald Trump says he's getting bored with his war, doesn't care about the mid-terms … but is laser focused on what matters: his reflecting pond renovation, diverting money from national parks for his D.C. cleanup, the Arc ‘d Trump, taking over DC golf courses, the UFC version of the ancient gladiator battles to the death, and reminding us daily that he's passed a dementia screening test four times. His latest middle finger to the nation: suggesting that the Las Vegas-style Fight Club arena on what used to be the White House lawn become a permanent part of the landscape. Vegas has the Dome and Elvis Wedding chapel; the home of Presidents, if Trump has his way, will have its own dome and a massive wedding reception hall. And it's being reported that Trump is looting money from National Parks maintenance to pay for his July 4 fireworks show, the Reflecting Pool, a White House helipad and DC cleanup projects. He'll burn up 1.6-million dollars blowing up stuff on the 4th … even as he burns up billions every week blowing up stuff in Iran. In an administration populated by the absolutely worst cabinet in American history, Trump manages to lower the bar even further with the appointment of Michigander housing developer and certified Trump suck-up Bill Pulte as acting Director of National Intelligence, a job for which he has absolutely no qualifications. Actors Matt Damon and John Krasinski … a.k.a. Jason Bourne and Jack Ryan … would be more qualified. Adding the the Bad Cabinet Blues: the new director of Homeland Security, Markwayne Mullins, says as far as he's concerned following court orders is optional. Michigan Democrats are optimistic after making the case to the national party that Michigan should be in the first tier of 2028 presidential primaries. The state party has also rejected appeals related to vote counting in the April endorsement convention. Will the dispute extend to the official nominating convention in August? The state House has turned down a Republican-drafted constitutional amendment which would make all university boards and the State Board of Education gubernatorial appointed bodies instead of elected. Speaker Matt Hall didn't bother to talk with Democrats before putting the measure up for a vote. With a two-thirds vote needed to pass, it didn't come close to adoption, but could be revived for the November election. We are just 50 days away from the start of early voting in Michigan. The four races to watch: the 3-way Republican contest for the opportunity to battle Jocelyn Benson for Governor; the 3-way Democratic contest to battle Mike Rogers for the U.S. Senate; and multi-candidate Democratic primaries for Congressional seats based in Lansing and Macomb County. Speculation has begun over who may be in the running for President of Michigan State University in the wake of last week's departure of Kevin Guskiewicz. Will it be a relatively unknown academic, or a high-powered retired politician? There's precedent for both routes…although the highest profile possibility, Gretchen Whitmer, has already announced she is not interested in the gig. Republicans in Congress are starting to push back on Trump outrages – the House passing a measure to stop Trump's Middle East war, Senators stripping the one-billion-dollar subsidy for his ballroom from the DHS budget, and both chambers primed to outlaw efforts to revive the $1.8-billion slush fund for rewarding January 6 rioters and other Trump fans. It's interesting that congressional Republicans only started to show signs of life after candidate filing deadlines. Michigan Congressman Tom Barrett, who no longer faces the possibility of a primary challenge, was one of four Republicans voting this week to end the Iran War.  The political threat to non-compliant Republicans for pushing back against Great Leader comes as doubts about Trump's mental and physical health grow. His third physical examination since taking office coupled with an incomplete post-exam report on what the doctors learned, his reduced work schedule, the cankles and bruising – have increased the speculation. It sure looks like both his political and mental powers are in decline. This week's best political giggle: an AI doctored photo of Senate candidate Mike Rogers, turning his relatively fit 63-year-old body into a modern-day Charles Atlas. What the heck – it's easier than hours in the gym, or even going on Ozempic. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Introducing our new podcast! It's About More Than Just the Governor: Article 5 - Executive Branch

#FactsMatter, the Citizens Research Council of Michigan podcast

In this 7th podcast on the Michigan Constitution, host Guy Gordon and Research Council President Eric continue their deep dive into the constitution's articles and issues as voters prepare to decide in November whether to call a constitutional convention. This installment focuses on Article V, which outlines the structure and powers of the executive branch—and, as the conversation makes clear, it covers far more than the governor. Eric explains that the 1963 Constitution dramatically simplified state government compared with the sprawling, confusing structure under the 1908 Constitution. Article V establishes not only the governor's authority but also the independently elected Secretary of State and Attorney General, and it sets the framework for the State Board of Education and the superintendent of schools. A major theme is checks and balances. While the governor has broad powers—including reorganizing departments, filling legislative vacancies, and making appointments—Lupher notes that a constitutional convention might focus on strengthening legislative oversight rather than on weakening the executive. Examples include: - Executive reorganization power: Governors have repeatedly reshaped departments (e.g., splitting the DNR, creating EGLE, and forming new education structures). A con-con may consider whether the legislature should play a more formal role in approving such changes. - Filling legislative vacancies: Recent delays in calling special elections underscored how political incentives can leave voters without representation. A convention could set firmer timelines or remove the governor from the process entirely. - Appointment and removal authority: While governors need flexibility to select their leadership teams, Lupher suggests that improved confirmation or oversight processes could strengthen accountability, especially in departments that have faced public controversy. The conversation also touches on a quirky gap in Article V: there is no process for filling a vacancy in the lieutenant governor's office, even though the role carries constitutional responsibilities. Lupher calls this a clear example of “cleanup” work a convention could address. Overall, they conclude that Article 5 is unlikely to be a driving force behind a push for a con-con. But if a convention were to occur for other reasons, delegates would have meaningful opportunities to modernize and clarify the executive branch's structure. The Future of Workforce Development & Talent with PJ McGrew Brought to you by End-to-End Services and Lightleap AI (lightleapai.com) Guest: PJ McGrew, SVP of Talent Strategy and Programming, Conexus Indiana Episode Summary Host Dr. Rod Berger sits down with PJ McGrew to explore how Indiana is rethinking workforce development for the modern manufacturing era. PJ shares his journey from state government to Conexus Indiana, and how a network of 130+ manufacturing companies is co-designing education pipelines that prepare students for an AI- and automation-driven future. Key Topics Covered PJ's Background – From the Center for Education and Career Innovation under Governor Pence, to Chief of Staff at the State Board of Education, to Education Policy Advisor under Governors Pence and Holcomb, to the Governor's Workforce Cabinet — PJ's career traces the evolution of Indiana's education-workforce alignment efforts. Conexus Indiana & the Industry Talent Association – How Conexus, part of the CEOs of Indiana Corporate Partnership, brings together 130+ manufacturers to identify workforce needs and influence the education system accordingly. Skills-First, Not Job-First – Manufacturers pushed for building broad, foundational skills over narrow occupational training — recognizing that integrated, cross-functional roles are becoming the norm on the modern factory floor. The Retirement Cliff – 30%+ of Indiana's manufacturing workforce is over 55. Recruiting the next generation through exciting, technology-forward programming is critical. New Indiana Diploma Seals – Approved in December 2024, six new diploma seals include three that require work-based learning (75–650 hours), creating formal pathways for apprenticeships and internships. The Modern Apprenticeship Model – Inspired by Switzerland and Germany's employer-led vocational systems, Indiana's apprenticeship pilot (launched 2020) has served ~600 students. A new occupational standard is being ratified with 6 employers hosting ~10 apprentices in an upcoming pilot phase. Earn Indiana Program – A work-study-style program offsetting ~50% of intern/apprentice wages, lowering the barrier for employers to engage students early. Blind Spots in the System – Fragmented funding streams, transportation barriers, lack of local intermediaries, and siloed program design are key challenges that need system-level solutions. Cross-State Learning – Indiana was an early mover on industry talent associations; now states like Colorado are adopting the model. Cross-state knowledge sharing is active but nuanced, given regional differences. Pathway Consolidation – Plans to consolidate Indiana's 10 manufacturing CTE pathways into fewer, competency-aligned tracks to reduce confusion and better match employer needs. Quotes to Remember "If we're gonna design this new system, we need to show students that they can have a career in manufacturing." "Listening to employers earlier in the process means students are better prepared — and employers save on retraining costs." "We need local intermediaries to translate what employers need into what schools and students can actually access." In this episode, we sat down with Keith Rapp, senior hydrogeologist, longtime volunteer with ASBOG (the Association of State Boards of Geology), and immediate past president of the organization. We dug into the professional geologist licensure process — what the FG (Fundamentals of Geology) and PG (Practice of Geology) exams actually test, how questions get written and vetted by panels of subject matter experts, why some states require licensure and others don't, and why Keith argues that licensure is fundamentally about protecting public health and safety.Keith walked us through his path from growing up in Duluth with a geomicrobiologist uncle, to a master's in hydrogeology at Baylor, to a career cleaning up contaminated sites using microbes — what he calls hydrogeomicrobiochemistry. We talked about his current work on PFAS bioremediation, the idea of "pushing evolution" by engineering biofilm environments where microbes can adapt to degrade forever chemicals, and the role of zeolites as remediation media. We also got into the practical stuff students and early-career geologists actually want to know: how to study for the FG exam, why test scores point you toward weak domains, what reciprocity between states looks like, the difference between an ASBOG license and an AIPG Certified Professional Geologist (CPG) designation, and why writing skills still matter in a hiring pile. We closed with a conversation about AI in geoscience — where it helps, where it gets you in trouble when your name is on a signed report, and how the profession should think about it going forward. If you're a student preparing for the FG, a working geologist thinking about getting licensed in another state, or just curious about how a professional credentialing system gets built and maintained, this one is for you. The term “Red-Green axis” describes the improbable, but very real, collusion between radical leftists and sharia-supremacist Muslims. Despite myriad differences, they collaborate here, animated by a shared goal of destroying our constitutional Republic.  While examples of such cooperation abound, Texas has lately been a locus of particularly insidious ones. For instance, in recent days, hard leftists and Muslim Brotherhood operatives pressed – fortunately unsuccessfuly – the State Board of Education to adopt a K-12 social studies curriculum promoting cultural Marxist and pro-sharia agendas.  And last Saturday, a “young Democrats” group in Tarrant County issued a statement aligned with, if not actually written by, Muslim Brothers. It falsely asserted, “Islam teaches peace and justice. Islam…does not teach people to hurt others, engage in acts of terrorism, or promote violence.” Patriots must expose and reject the Red-Green Axis.  This is Frank Gaffney.

Dems have never had a problem with university “experts” fully funded by Leftwing grant money! And also as you'd expect, advocates of Islam are upset that radical Islamic terror is tied to, well, Islam in the history curriculum! Next Tuesday, the Texas State Board of Education will cast votes with potentially profound and far-reaching implications for students across America. That's because publishers sell nationwide the textbooks used to teach Texans' curriculums. So, if Texas' State Board of Education sticks with a patriotic framework for K-12 social studies that it adopted last year and the standards that would implement it, kids throughout America will be equipped with factual information about, for example, our Founders, our Constitution and other founding documents, and the Judeo-Christian beliefs at their core.  If, on the other hand, a designated terrorist group called the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and its leftist allies have their way, our children will instead be indoctrinated with political agendas inimical to our freedoms and values. Join us in encouraging the Texas board to vote for a pro-America curriculum at BanSharia.com.      This is Frank Gaffney.

A resolution from the Utah State Board of Education is ruffling some feathers today. The separation of church and state -- called into question at this morning's state school board meeting. The language in the resolution is meant to echo the sentiments of America's founding fathers, at least that's what board members say. But many community members feel like the resolution instead calls non-religious people immoral. And many of those folks showed up in full force at the board meeting today to make sure board members knew how they felt. In this Deep Dive, Maria Shilaos discusses the resolution and the response to it with KSL NewsRadio's Heather Peterson.

On March 3rd, 1.9 million Texans voted to prohibit sharia law in their state. Next Tuesday, the Council on American Islamic Relations intends to win a vote involving just fifteen people, insinuating sharia's agenda into textbooks used in Texas and across the country.  The occasion is an April 7th hearing and vote in the State Board of Education on whether to stick with its previously approved, pro-America curriculum for K-through-12 social studies or adopt a “CAIR curriculum.” It may be the most important battle in Texas since the Alamo, a structure that, according to CAIR's version of history, was a tribute to Islam.  Sharia-supremacists – like all totalitarians – know if they can indoctrinate the children, they can dominate the society. Texans and other Americans who don't want a designated terrorist group like CAIR dictating what our kids are taught must say so now.   This is Frank Gaffney.

Advocates working to accurately portray Native Americans in the K-12 education system in Texas scored a victory when the State Board of Education renewed a curriculum that was years in the making. The approval came at a time when the Trump administration and state officials pushed hard to scrub any hint of diversity from public school classrooms. Among other things, opponents of the Texas Native Studies course worried instruction about the Catholic Church's role in Indian Boarding Schools might demoralize Christian students. How to Choose a Trustworthy Tax Preparer This Season

The holidays are behind us; you know what that means—it's tax season! But before you start gathering your W-2s and receipts, there's an important question: Do you know who will prepare your taxes this year? With a nationwide shortage of Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) and tax professionals, waiting too long to find a preparer could leave you scrambling—and vulnerable to scams. Here's how to protect yourself and find a trusted tax preparer.Who Can Prepare Your Taxes? When hiring a tax professional, your preparer will likely fall into one of three categories:Certified Public Accountant (CPA): These professionals undergo rigorous education, exams, and licensing requirements. Many specialize in tax preparation and can also provide broader financial guidance.Enrolled Agent (EA): Licensed by the IRS, EAs are tax experts who can prepare and file returns, represent clients before the IRS, and provide tax planning services.Tax Attorney: These legal professionals specialize in tax law and are particularly useful for complex tax situations, audits, or disputes. Each of these professionals is highly qualified—but the problem is there aren't enough of them. There is a growing shortage of CPAs and tax professionals, largely due to fewer young people entering the field. One of the major "Big Four" firms, KPMG, continues to offer high school students internships at $22 an hour to encourage them to become CPAs.What does this mean for you?Longer wait times to book a tax preparerHigher fees due to increased demandGreater risk of falling into the hands of fraudulent preparersWhen people are desperate to file their returns, they can become easy targets for scammers who fake credentials or engage in tax fraud. How to Avoid Tax Scams and Find a Qualified PreparerTo protect yourself, follow these IRS-recommended steps when choosing a tax preparer:1. Choose a Year-Round Tax PreparerA reputable preparer should be available year-round. You don't want your tax preparer to disappear if you get audited.2. Verify Their IRS CredentialsAsk for the IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). All paid tax return preparers must register with the IRS and enter their PTIN on every return they file.Check their status using the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers at IRS.gov.3. Look for Professional CredentialsAsk if the preparer holds a credential such as:CPA (Check with the State Board of Accountancy)Enrolled Agent (Verify at IRS.gov under "Verify Enrolled Agent Status")Tax Attorney (Confirm with their State Bar Association)Additionally, inquire about continuing education, as tax laws change frequently; professionals should stay current.4. Be Cautious About FeesBeware of tax preparers who:Charge fees based on a percentage of your refundClaim they can get you a larger refund than competitorsA legitimate preparer should charge a flat or hourly rate based on the complexity of your return.5. Verify IRS E-File CapabilityMost tax preparers handling more than 10 clients must file electronically. If your preparer refuses to e-file, that's a red flag.6. Ensure Proper DocumentationA trustworthy tax preparer will ask for the following:Your W-2 and 1099 forms (not just a pay stub)Records of deductions and creditsIf a preparer doesn't ask for supporting documents, walk away. The IRS requires proper documentation to verify your return.7. Understand Representation RulesOnly CPAs, Enrolled Agents, and tax attorneys can represent you before the IRS if you're audited. Non-credentialed tax preparers—including your math-savvy cousin Bill—cannot represent you in an audit.8. Never Sign a Blank or Incomplete Tax ReturnPlease review your return carefully before signing. Ensure all information is accurate, and ask questions if anything appears incorrect.9. Your Refund Should Go to You—Not the PreparerCheck the routing and account number on your tax return to ensure your refund is deposited into your own account, not your preparer's.Looking for a Faith-Based Financial Professional? If you want to work with a tax professional who aligns with biblical financial principles, consider finding a CPA, Enrolled Agent, or tax attorney with the Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA®) designation. To find a trusted, faith-based tax professional, visit FindaCKA.com. With tax season here, choosing a reputable, qualified tax preparer is more important than ever. Don't wait until the last minute—start your search today to avoid scams and ensure your taxes are filed accurately and ethically. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I have long-term care insurance and want to know if it covers assisted living, and for how long. Also, how expensive are these policies—what's the range?I'm 45 and looking to buy a house with a 30-year mortgage. Is that a wise move since I'd be nearing retirement by the time it's paid off?I'm remodeling our bathroom for my husband, who has Parkinson's, and it will cost about $25,000–$30,000. Is it better to take the money from my 401(k) or from equity in our paid-off home?My husband is retired, and when he tries to claim disability, they tell him he can't because of my income since we file jointly.
