As we know the Indianapolis Colts went heavy on the defense in the 2019 NFL Draft. Today Stampede Blue's own Zach Hick joins Matt Danely to discuss the secondary in particular, and how the group looks post-draft for the 2019 season. The drafting of Rock Ya-Sin, Marvell Tell, and Khari Willis will add to a very intriguing secondary that needed to improve on some very key aspects of their collective game. While the group were stingy in terms of giving up big plays to opposing offenses in 2018, they also gave up better than a 70 percent completion rate in the same breath. The group needs to become more physical, and become a larger play-making unit in general to take that next step towards having a complete defense. Can Ya-Sin, Tell and Willis make that sort of impact for this group? Naturally, Matt and Zach deviate to other topics surrounding the Colts draft, but the Colts look to have made improvements at all three levels of the defense and we'll dive into the front seven later in the week as well. The Indianapolis Colts have boosted their roster after hauling in 10 picks in the 2019 NFL Draft. Chris Ballard looks to have made the most out of an interesting set of prospects, and has focused on getting the team real depth and is working towards evening each side of the ball. Today Stephen Holder, of The Athletic, is back with another show to discuss why there's even more reason for optimism with the team heading into the 2019 season after this haul. Here's a brief rundown of today's topics. - Who are the best and worst from the Colts 2019 class? - Parris Campbell is an interesting and valuable addition - Campbell becomes another chess piece in Frank Reich's system - 2019 personnel groupings should be very intriguing - Chris Ballard and Frank Reich are in lock-step - Marvell Tell may be the most interesting pick - Initial transition could take some time for Tell - Why Tell's transition isn't the same as T.J. Green's - Could Bobby Okereke's ceiling be the highest of all the Colts' picks? - Colts' LB corps could be outstanding in 2019 - Could Okereke supplant Anthony Walker at the MIKE? - Competition at WR may be intense in camp - Deon Cain coming back the same as in camp after ACL isn't a given - Colts lost some of their bulk trading away Hassan Ridgeway, but for a reason - Ballard's affinity for team captains - Ballard's ability to collect picks for following year's draft - Comp picks have become a vital part of the Colts' team building strategy Learn more about your ad choices. USC defensive back who will be selected in this weeks NFL Draft
With less than three weeks to go until the 2019 NFL Draft, Brandan Schulze and Rob Staton will be exploring different Seattle Seahawks mock draft scenarios every Monday. With only three Mondays leading up to April 25, this week's show kicks off with the likely scenario of trading back to acquire additional picks. Rob's seven-round mock draft for the Seahawks also covers the first 103 picks so we can see which players the Seahawks could be missing out on based on who they select. The first trade with Kansas City gives Seattle an additional third- and sixth-round pick, and a trade back with the Cardinals gives the Seahawks an additional selection in the fourth. Those moves would give Seattle seven picks to work with and a full day to make a decision on the first pick of the second round. The first pick goes to Arizona State wide receiver N’Keal Harry, who is reported to be coming to the Seahawks facility for an official visit. Tune is as Rob goes into depth on the reasoning behind the first three picks, including defensive end Charles Omenihu of Texas and safety Marvell Tell of USC. Defensive tackle Armon Watts of Arkansas, tight end Kaden Smith of Stanford, defensive tackle Greg Gaines of Washington and cornerback Derreck Thomas of Baylor round out the list of picks. Before discussing some better than expected performances, particularly at safety, a few news items jumped out in the news today as the Seahawks reportedly met with Kyler Murray at the combine. Rob Staton from seahawksdraftblog.com is back on the show to remind us why that was a smart move even with Russell Wilson locked in at quarterback. Wilson is going into his final year and Joel Corry said on KJR Monday that Russell's contract will need to start around $35 million per year. The Seahawks also announced that they've placed the franchise tag on Frank Clark ahead of Tuesday's deadline. Jachai Polite reportedly did not interview well, but Rob thinks the reports could be based on Polite reaction following his talks with teams. However, scouts are calling him on bailing on the workouts and that could be what causes his stock to tumble a bit. There were a number of safeties that improved their stock in a class that was not expected to be as athletic as they proved to be on the final day of the NFL Scouting Combine. There were three safeties that ran in the 4.3s or better. The fastest player of the weekend was a safety who ran 4.29. Juan Thornhill had an impressive 44-inch vertical to go along with his 4.4 speed. Rob says there's one safety to look at as a possible safety to cornerback convert, similar to Tre Flowers last year for Seattle and that's USC safety Marvell Tell. Taylor Rapp of Washington had an impressive day, topping the field in the short shuttle, a drill that measures short-area quickness. Among the cornerbacks, there were five who tested very well and also fit the Seahawks profile: Mike Jackson, Miami; Isaiah Johnson, Houston; Lonnie Johnson, Kentucky; Justin Layne, Michigan State, and Ken Webster of Mississippi St. Of all those players, Rob says Lonnie Johnson would be the player most likely still around in the range that Seattle may be interested in taking a corner. The others could be going in the first two rounds of the draft. Rob offers some final thoughts on the class as a whole and the guys discuss where Seattle may be most likely to go while trying to project 2-3 years out. One of our listeners on YouTube says Khalil Hodge is a Seahawks linebacker and Rob says there is a lot to like about him and could be a potential late-round prospect for Seattle.
