On the Tuesday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel, host Noah Hiles welcomes Post-Gazette Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo to analyze the defensive front seven's impact on the Week 9 victory against the Indianapolis Colts. Why were T.J. Watt and Payton Wilson Ray's two most impactful players? Has Wilson arrived as a do-everything linebacker within coach Mike Tomlin's defense? Did his stellar outing help T.J. Watt be more disruptive? And to what degree can Watt and Cam Heyward be unlocked when names like Derrick Harmon, Joey Porter Jr., Alex Highsmith, Keeanu Benton and others are performing at a high level as well? Our duo tackles those questions, then talks about the secondary. Was the success in zone against the Colts repeatable? Or will opponents force the Steelers to prove they can stop them in man coverage? Will Jalen Ramsey stay at safety amid DeShon Elliott's injury? What would that mean for corners like Darius Slay Jr. and Brandin Echols? And other safeties including Kyle Dugger, Juan Thornhill and Jabrill Peppers? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. And can he help the team solve its yards after the catch problem when facing a tough Colts passing game that includes names like Daniel Jones, Michael Pittman, Tyler Warren and Alec Pierce? On the Friday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates, host Adam Bittner welcomes Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey to analyze the Steelers' recurring communication issues. How much blame does coach Mike Tomlin deserve for them? Are they becoming a stale excuse for him? Is his scheme the problem considering they've persisted after names like Minkah Fitzpatrick and Donte Jackson were swapped out for guys like Jalen Ramsey, Juan Thornhill and Darius Slay Jr. this offseason? Or does Tomlin need another assistant to help sort these issues out? Our guys tackle those questions, as well as T.J. Watt's lack of sacks through two games. Are those excusing the production by citing his pressure rate using the same arguments they've dismissed about Myles Garrett's performance with the Cleveland Browns for years? Should those pressures eventually open up opportunities to Jack Sawyer, Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig to finish plays? And how much should Watt's gaudy offseason contract be part of the conversation? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's what kind of safety Jabrill Peppers can be. Peppers has mostly played strong safety throughout his NFL career. But what does that mean when it comes to the Pittsburgh defense, and how can he fit in around DeShon Elliott, Chuck Clark and Juan Thornhill? What's a strong safety, anyway? Alan breaks it down. On the Wednesday edition of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates, host Adam Bittner welcomes Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Christipher Carter to assess the team's line play in NFL Week 1 against the New York Jets. Is it too soon to panic about Broderick Jones after he gave up three sacks? Or is he a valid concern for coach Mike Tomlin and OC Arthur Smith? Do teammates Troy Fautanu, Mason McCormick, Isaac Seumalo and Zach Frazier deserve more credit than they've received for limiting pressure? And how much blame does QB Aaron Rodgers deserve for taking four sacks in the contest? Our duo tackles those questions and more. Including: What should we make of the team's plans at safety now that DeShon Elliott is hurt and Jabrill Peppers has been signed to play alongside Chuck Clark and Juan Thornhill? Is Keeanu Benton the defensive lineman who most needs to improve in coming weeks? What kind of difference can a healthy Derrick Harmon make for the defensive line? And what happens if Cam Heyward is merely a good player and no longer an All-Pro type at the end spot?
Juan Thornhill admitted that the defense wasn't ready for Justin Fields. How? The guys said the declaration of this defense being the best ever is already dead on arrival. How was a Mike Tomlin defense not ready for Fields? The incentives have been released for Cam Heyward and his new contract, and they do not look very good for Cam. Former MLB pitcher Matt Clement joined the show. The guys wanted to ask Matt about the Karen-like fan at the Phillies game that took a ball from a man and his son. Matt talked about some unruly fans and some of the difficulties he faced in his playing days. What kind of strides could the Pirates take in free agency and do you have faith in Bob Nutting making those moves? How much pressure is on Ben Cherington this offseason? Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk joined the show. Mike expected the Dolphins to be bad and he saw this coming. He believes Tyreek Hill will be this year's version of Davante Adams because Miami will be very bad heading into the trade deadline. Mike told the guys about Hill's value and background taking a hit due to the domestic violence claim currently against him. Mike explained the incentives of the Cam Heyward deal to the guys and they don't understand what all of the hoopla was about. Mike told the guys Chris Boswell is confident he will end up being the highest-paid kicker in the game, but the business (the team) wants to wait to pay its employee. Mike thinks Jabrill Peppers getting cut from the Patriots was a fit/scheme issue and don't think the Steelers are getting damaged goods here. Mike, a proud West Virginia man, is happy he won't be able to watch the Backyard Brawl on Saturday.
On the Saturday edition of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder and Associates, Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Christopher Carter and Brian Batko talk Cam Heyward's contract dispute and then give predictions/keys to win for the Steelers-Jets Week 1 matchup on Sunday. Did the Steelers call Heyward's bluff throughout these contract negotiations about him potentially not playing Sunday? What kind of a distraction would that be for the team and a defense that struggled against the run last year? Is there a possibility a deal could get done before Sunday — or later? What is it going to take for the Steelers to walk out of MetLife Stadium with a win this weekend? How will Aaron Rodgers fare in his return to New York after spending the last two seasons there? How will the defense, featuring new names like Jalen Ramsey, Darius Slay Jr. and Juan Thornhill, do against former Steelers QB Justin Fields? How will wide receivers like Roman Wilson perform behind DK Metcalf? And what about the offensive line, where Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu will make their first start together in their preferred positions? Our duo answers those questions and more.
Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's evaluating the fit between the Black and Gold and recently released New England Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers. The Patriots surprisingly cut Peppers last week, and he has remained a free agent. The Steelers already have DeShon Elliott, Juan Thornhill and Chuck Clark in the fold. Do they have a need for another safety, and would Peppers be a good fit? Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In this clip from the Friday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates, host Adam Bittner welcomes Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey to ponder the Steelers' worst-case scenarios in 2025 and what could lead to them. Is the quarterback room good enough as a whole? From Aaron Rodgers with question marks as a 41-year-old to Mason Rudolph as a backup in the event Rodgers is injured? Or could those two doom the team if they're not playing at their best? What happens if DK Metcalf is injured? Do coach Mike Tomlin, GM Omar Khan and OC Arthur Smith have enough depth there in the form of Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson and Scotty Miller? Or do they still need to make a move at some point? And have the communication issues in the defensive backfield been rectified? Or will Jalen Ramsey, Darius Slay Jr. and Juan Thornhill fall into similar traps that Minkah Fitzpatrick did in leading the group last season? Our duo tackles those questions and more.
In this clip from the Thursday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates, host Adam Bittner welcomes Post-Gazette insider Christopher Carter to analyze the Steelers' depth at safety after roster cut down day. Do GM Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin have enough depth at the position, with only DeShon Elliott, Juan Thornhill and Chuck Clark manning it moving forward? Is the Minkah Fitzpatrick trade for Jalen Ramsey a signal they they believe they can find useful players at safety even in the event of injury? How does Ramsey figure into the safety situation, if at all? And how should we feel about the overall secondary that also includes names like Joey Porter Jr. and Darius Slay Jr.? Our duo tackles those questions and more.
In this clip from the Tuesday edition of the North Shore Drive podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey welcomes insider Ray Fittipaldo to analyze the Steelers' situation at offensive tackle with Troy Fautanu and Broderick Jones. Did either or both show enough in training camp and the preseason to prove that they can be building blocks for the young offensive line, which also includes names like Mason McCormick and Zach Frazier? And will they be able to adequately protect Aaron Rodgers, who increasingly lacks mobility at QB? Later, they ponder whether the running game or high number of new faces in the secondary is a bigger concern. With Jalen Ramsey, Darius Slay Jr, Juan Thornhill and others all trying to find their place. And they explain how they feel the Cam Heyward contract dispute may play out now that he's returned to practicing with the team.
In this clip from the Tuesday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey welcomes Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo to analyze the defense's depth at linebacker and ongoing communication issues. How much has the team's depth at linebacker grown in the offseason? How much will projected starters Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson play? And how often might they be rested in favor of reserves like Cole Holcomb, who's been shining in Steelers training camp and the NFL preseason? And where will rookie Jack Sawyer find his niche in the outside linebacker group behind names like T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig? The guys tackle those questions, then explain whether they're concerned about communication issues that plagued the defense down the stretch. Especially because veterans like Jalen Ramsey and Darius Slay Jr. have not gotten the chance to mesh with new teammates like DeShon Elliott, Joey Porter Jr. and Juan Thornhill much in the preseason.

We got an update on the Will Howard injury from Mike Tomlin. It appears to be a broken finger that will have him ‘week-to-week.' Howard has a fracture on a finger of his throwing hand, but surgery won't be necessary. A few reports are suggesting it is his pinky finger, which is probably the one you want it to be if you had to pick. There was also a brawl at today's practice. Juan Thornhill stoked the fires of the hype around the team's defense. How good can they be? 93.7 The Fan Sports Director Jeff Hathhorn joined the show. Jeff mentioned Derrick Harmon missing practice for a second day in a row. Jeff broke down the practice fight from earlier today. Jeff said it was another solid day for Aaron Rodgers. Jeff couldn't 100% confirm, but based on looking at his hand, it appears to be the pinky that Will Howard broke yesterday. Jeff noted that Roman Wilson got a lot of love today from QB1. Judge Donny.

On the Friday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates, Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Christopher Carter and Ray Fittipaldo react to the team's first training camp practice at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe. They explain why it's way too soon to panic about a rough start for Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf, who connected just one time in four attempts Thursday. Why Metcalf is optimistic about the way OC Arthur Smith plans to use him. And how other pieces including linemen Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu; backs Jaylen Warren and Kaleb Johnson; tight ends Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith; and receivers Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson still have time to come togehter. Later, the guys analyze the defense and what we can learn from where names such as Jalen Ramsey, Juan Thornhill and T.J. Watt are lining up.
