Is God forgiving enough that we can just “wing-it” with His commands? If He sees we are “trying,” is that good enough? With many following just parts and snippets of the Scriptures, we have to wonder just how much impact that has in our relationship with our Lord above. Today we discuss how God does care about the details, despite whether we like or dislike them.

This week Shauna and Dan look at the phrase, "Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades", which is way more modern than Dan thought. Also, Shauna points out Clydesdale horses bring their own Ugg boots to the party, while Dan notes that trebuchets are the superior siege engines. Bonus: Shippy Shippers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the color vision deficient crowd (mostly Dan). And did you know the United Kingdom once listed horseshoes as an "uncivilized game"? It's a challenging life, cowboying and relying on the range for your living. And if you saddle up regularly in the rodeo circuit, you have one heck of a challenging and busy life. Just ask the Wright family. That's exactly what Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist John Branch did when he was assigned to write a story about them. Cowboys? Rodeos? Branch, who grew up in the West, was all in. In fact, he turned the New York Times story into a book about the Wrights called the “The Last Cowboys.” He chats with our podcast cowboys about the Wrights, the future of cowboying, and what life is like on the rodeo circuit. Branch also shares a few additional true stories from his newest bestseller, “Sidecountry: Tales of Death and Life from the Back Road of Sports.” Concluding this episode is Bethany Zill's version of “Cowboy's Sweetheart.” Bethany hails from Tucson, AZ, where she also is a videographer and documentarian.
Shoes are fashionable, whether they're for humans or horses. And There was a time when every community had a blacksmith, and their work was focused on utility. Today's blacksmith's still focus on utility and function, but there's also a certain art to what they do. Farriers, the modern-day equivalent of historical blacksmiths, now focus primarily on the craft of horseshoeing. This transition from the all-encompassing role of the blacksmith to the specialized expertise of the farrier marks a significant shift in the industry. Craig Turnka, a seasoned veteran with 40 years of experience in horse shoeing, sheds light on the evolution of blacksmithing. "The blacksmith was all-encompassing with agriculture, making plows and various tools essential for farming," says Turnka. "But with the advent of the Industrial Revolution and the decline of horses as primary beasts of burden, ferriering emerged as a specialized art."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ten days after the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Rear Admiral Chester W. Nimitz was named commander-in-chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet (CINCPACFLT). He was quickly promoted to admiral, and his demonstrated leadership and strategic thought are worthy of in-depth study. Trent Hone has done just that, and his recent book, Mastering the Art of Command: Admiral Chester W. Nimitz and Victory in the Pacific, is an outstanding read about a fascinating military leader. Trent joins our editor-in-chief, JP Clark, in the studio to discuss the personal traits that made Nimitz effective, the evolution of his headquarters over the course of the war and how he leveraged his personal schedule and routine for success. It's a great discussion and a great read for future flag and general officers or anyone interested in senior leadership.

Of all the (many) things Jonah hates, he has a unique resentment for the concept of New Year's Eve. If you share his disdain for the holiday, then try ringing in 2024 with the bitter grumblings of today's discombobulated, needlessly lengthy Ruminant rather than a trip to Times Square or an overpriced prix-fixe dinner. As usual, a number of urgent questions are addressed: Could Nikki Haley's recent slavery gaffe tank her campaign? Why is partisanship problematic? What's the latest on the war in Israel? And how did Jonah learn to stop worrying and (sort of) love horseshoe theory? Show Notes: - Jeff Blehar: “Nikki Haley's Sin Isn't Racism” - Jonah: “The Left's Whackjob Problem—and Ours” - Michael Lind: “The New National American Elite” - Jonah: “New Year's Kiss-Off” - Jonah: “The Year of the Horseshoe Theory” Learn more about your ad choices.
