The Helium Boys Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino back behind the microphones to react to USC's abysmal showing in a 38-20 rivalry loss to UCLA in the Trojans final Pac-12 game. Over 108 minutes, the Helium Boys break down the lackluster showing in the Crosstown Showdown that left them feeling like parents that are more disappointed than angry after a child's misdeeds and left the Trojans with a 7-5 record. The Helium Boys episode opens with the 'Two-Minute Drill' as each gives his initial reactions to the Trojans' loss to UCLA and the biggest things that stood out, including the continuation of the same story that has been seen throughout the season with an additional subplot of constantly giving the ball back to UCLA. In the Stock Up/Stock Down segment, the podcasting duo discuss who/what impressed, including Brenden Rice playing angry and collecting his fifth career 100-yard game, freshman defensive lineman Elijah Hughes getting his most extended run of the season and the Superman efforts of Caleb Williams that we've likely seen for the last time in cardinal and gold. The Helium Boys also look into what stocks took a hit over the weekend with USC continuing to have tackling woes on defense and struggling to block up front on the offensive side. Shotgun also poses the question to Chris of which offseason slogan was the worst between the 2012 team's "Prep, Not Hype" and 2023's "The longer it goes, the better we get." They also get diverted and go down a rabbit hole on the Pop Tart Bowl and end up having to present their favorite flavors. Throughout the show, Chris and Shotgun also look forward at USC's impending hire of a defensive coordinator and some of the things the new coach is going to have to address immediately. The Helium Boys then answer your questions from Twitter and Instagram discussing areas/players where USC regressed, how the transfer portal will reshape the Trojans' roster this offseason, preferred offensive systems and whether Jim Leonhard could be "Grinch-like." They also break down their three favorite holidays. Then during the overtime portion of the 'Take It or Leave It' section, Chris questions Shotgun on celebrity Thanksgiving guests and their side dishes of choice. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about USC's 38-20 loss to UCLA in the Coliseum, closing out what was a once promising college football season in the most disappointing way possible. The Trojans were preseason ranked No. 5 and started off winning their first six games and didn't trail for the first five. Since then USC lost to both of its rivals in uncompetitive games, went 1-5 and once again sported one of the worst defenses in the country. There was great anticipation heading into the 2023 college football season, but it ended up being very difficult to endure and ended on a terrible note with an uncompetitive loss to UCLA. Coach Hyde says the party's over now, Santa Claus didn't bring any gifts and there is no easy way to make sense of it all. He feels major changes are needed and they are needed immediately, not just with the defensive coordinator but how the entire coaching staff is structured, how recruiting is handled, the overall football philosophy, the entire package. Losing to the Bruins and gaining only three rushing yards is inexcusable. It was the last chance for this team to have some positivity heading into the bowl game and while most Trojan fans anticipated a victory over this UCLA squad that had scored 17 points total in its last two games, that didn't happen. No bragging rights. No Victory Bell. No momentum going into a bowl game. The defense obviously needs fixing but there are issues on offense and special teams as well. Coach feels the team was dominated on both lines and that is where football games are won, in the trenches. Caleb Williams is a special player but there was far too much pressure on him to succeed. He needs help from the line, the skill players and the coaching staff since he isn't forced to do everything on his own. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! On the latest edition of Tunnel Vision, USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham and Jack Smith are back in studio trying to make sense of an absolute dreadful performance by the Trojans, falling to their rival Bruins 38-20 in a game where it appeared USC wasn't even interested in playing. UCLA had control from the get-go, taking an early 14-0 lead with USC turning it over on downs, punting, fumbling and throwing an interception on its first four possessions. After starting off the season No 5 in the country and getting out of the gates with a 6-0 start, the Trojans have lost five of their last six games and showed almost no signs of life in the two rivalry games against Notre Dame and UCLA. The USC defense has now allowed 419 points on the season, the most ever in Trojan football history. Once again they allowed opponents to hit high water marks with Ethan Garbers throwing his career high in touchdown passes (3) and T.J. Harden with his career high in rushing attempts and yards (22 for 142). It wasn't just the defense that cracked against UCLA, the offense only had three (3) rushing yards and three turnovers while the special teams missed a short field goal, had a kickoff out of bounds and took a bad penalty on a kickoff return that set up a UCLA touchdown. The guys talk about what a disappointing season it has been, if that was the last we've seen of Caleb Williams, where the Trojans could go bowling and lots more. On the debut episode of the USC Triple-Double -- the first basketball-only podcast to be a part of the Peristyle Podcast family of shows -- Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) break down the hot starts of the Trojans' men's and women's basketball teams on the debut episode of the USC Triple-Double Podcast. Both USC hoops squads are ranked with the Women of Troy coming in at No. 10 this week, earning their first top 10 ranking in nearly 30 years, while the men were ranked No. 16 after a 2-0 start to the season but are likely to slide in the next rankings release after losing to UC Irvine, 70-60, on Tuesday. But that loss came with some extenuating circumstances, which the triple-double team break down. But first, a special guest joins the show as USC women's basketball head coach Lindsay Gottlieb comes on to talk about her fabulous freshman sensation JuJu Watkins, who is fourth in the nation in scoring averaging 28.3 points per game after the first 10 days of the season. Gottlieb discusses her teams' hot start and how expectations are adjusted after the Trojans defeated then-No. 7 Ohio State in the season opener in Las Vegas. She also talks about the next wave of stars USC landed with a top 10 recruiting class. Shotgun and Connor then recap the start of the season for both Trojan teams, which began with a day-night USC hoops doubleheader sweep in Las Vegas over a pair of Elite Eight teams. Gottlieb's team landed a top 10 upset over the Buckeyes while the men took down a shorthanded Kansas State squad. The triple-double hosts also take a look at Gottlieb's versatile recuiting class. The hosts then look at where the Trojan squads stand both record and stat wise after 10 days. They also discuss the upcoming week of action for the USC teams with the women heading to the Bahamas to participate in an early-season tournament while the men hope for a 'Get Right' game. The Composite Two-Star Recruits podcast returns to discuss the commitment of three-star Huntington Beach (Calif.) 2024 OT Justin Tauanuu to USC, take a deep dive on DC candidate Jimmy Lake and talking the recruiting impact of Jimbo Fisher's firing and (potential firing) of UCLA head coach Chip Kelly. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio talking about the Trojans failed trip to the Pacific Northwest, falling to Oregon 36 to 27. USC football has now lost 4 of its last 5 games and are looking to take down UCLA on Saturday to salvage the season. There isn't much more to say about the trip to Eugene, just another failure to take down a ranked opponent for USC. The defense was able to make some adjustments and stop the explosive running game, but in doing so it allowed Bo Nix and the Ducks passing attack to go wild and put up historic numbers. Looking ahead to the regular season finale against the Bruins, the Trojans morale cannot be very high coming into this rivalry game, but UCLA's morale could be even lower with the news breaking this week that head coach Chip Kelly will likely be fired after this game, regardless of the outcome. While the difference between 7-5 and 8-4 isn't huge, especially considering this team was ranked No. 5 heading into the season, getting a win over a rival is still important and with the Trojans not having won a bowl game since the 2017 Rose Bowl, getting a better bowl game and playing well in the post season should be a priority. The guys talk about how Lincoln Riley and this team needs to do some major self reflection during the offseason and make sure to fix everything that is broken, including the obvious defensive problems and the less obvious special teams issues (SP+ has USC ranked dead last in FBS in special teams). Having an elite offense can only take a team so far, and when you are historically bad in two of the three phases of the game disappointing seasons like this one are inevitable. They also talk a little USC men's and women's hoops including Connor's newest basketball podcast that will launch this week with Shotgun Spratling and the first episode will feature USC women's basketball head coach Lindsay Gottlieb. Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino have returned from the Pacific Northwest and are on the mics for the Helium Boys Podcast, breaking down USC's 36-27 loss to No. 6 Oregon Saturday night in Autzen Stadium, the final road game of the season for the Trojans. The Helium Boys episode opens with the 'Two-Minute Drill' with both hosts giving their initial reactions to the weekend in Eugene. Naturally, Shotgun avoids talking about the actual game for as long as he can. Shotgun and Chris discuss the notable takeaways, including the fact they've seen this game with a couple of different details over and over this season. In the Stock Up/Stock Down segment, the podcasting duo discuss who/what impressed, including second-year freshman Tre'Quon Fegans taking advantage of an opportunity as well as the basketball teams' No. 1 recruits being named this season's first Pac-12 Freshman of the Week. The Helium Boys also look into what stocks took a hit over the weekend with Bryson Shaw seeing a noticeable depreciation with former defensive coordinator Alex Grinch no longer around. The podcast quickly previews USC's final regular-season game, the crosstown rivalry with the UCLA Bruins. The Bruins (6-3) are in the midst of a two-game losing streak, falling 17-7 to Arizona State over the weekend. USC won last year's matchup 48-45 in dramatic fashion in the Rose Bowl. “We have one more shot in the Coliseum. We've got one more chance to play UCLA, and that's a big rivalry for us. I think from the locker room, these guys have gone through a lot this year. They have hung in there, and they've kept swinging," said head coach Lincoln Riley after the game Saturday night. "There is a lot of unity in this locker room, and I think they very much appreciate one last chance to play the game together, and that's what you do. It's a first game that we've played here at USC where we're out of a championship race. You don't intend on playing anymore like this, but games like this show the character of the program, so that's what we get a chance to go put on display.” The Helium Boys then answer your questions from Twitter and Instagram discussing among other things the qualities they believe USC should be seeking in their next defensive coordinator. Then during the overtime portion of the 'Take It or Leave It' section, Chris provides Shotgun with some potential podcast names for an upcoming addition to the Peristyle Podcast family of shows. Finally, the podcast concludes with the Helium Boys giving their score predictions for the USC-UCLA matchup (12:30 p.m. PST) in the Coliseum to close out the Trojans' regular season. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about USC's 36-27 loss to Oregon in Eugene, another disappointing effort against a tough opponent. The Trojans were outgained 552 to 379 and Ducks quarterback Bo Nix went bananas, throwing for 412 yards and four touchdowns while completing 74% of his passes. Oregon was able to pressure Caleb Williams early and often, generating three sacks and one turnover while USC seemingly couldn't get close to Nix with no sacks and only two tackles for loss in the game. With the Trojans having lost an incredible four of their last five games, Coach Hyde thinks head coach Lincoln Riley needs to look into the mirror and see what changes need to be made in order for this program to eventually be championship caliber. This is the first time in Riley and Williams' careers that they are out of championship contention during the regular season, so how the team responds to that against rival UCLA this weekend will be interesting for sure. Coach Hyde saw Oregon play at a high intensity level and that combined with the amount of talent the Ducks had on the field is hard to beat. He wants to USC get there both with talent, toughness and intensity, but he just isn't seeing it right now. He is seeing more "me" attitude than "team" attitude and that has an impact on the entire program. Trojan fans are not happy right now and Coach Hyde thinks the players and coaches are not as well. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! On the latest edition of Tunnel Vision, USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Connor Morrissette and Chris Trevino are back in studio fresh off their trip to the Pacific Northwest where they witnessed USC falling short against Oregon, 36-27 in Autzen Stadium. The Ducks took control of the game early thanks to a pair of 70+ yard touchdown passes and several long scoring drives. The Trojans fought back and tried to make it a game in the second half but it was too little and too late to have a realistic shot of getting the upset win. Our crew talks about what the defense looked like without defensive coordinator Alex Grinch running the show, the struggles of the USC offensive line against the Ducks front seven, how this team just can't seem to put it all together against quality opponents and lots more. The Helium Boys Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino back to react to USC head coach Lincoln Riley's decision to make a change at the defensive coordinator position, firing Alex Grinch after the Trojans lost for the third time in four games, falling to Washington 52-42 in the Coliseum. They also break down the explosive offensive night of action from Saturday that sent the Trojans home with a 7-3 record on the season. Shotgun and Chris discuss the notable takeaways, including how despite being ahead early and then later the score being even, it never really felt like USC was going to win the game because the Trojans defense wasn't going to be able to get a stop to give the USC offense the requisite opportunity to win the game. The Helium Boys episode opens with the 'Two-Minute Drill' as each gives his initial reactions to the Trojans' loss to Washington and the biggest things that stood out. In the Stock Up/Stock Down segment, the podcasting duo discuss who/what impressed, including veteran running back Darwin Barlow finally getting an opportunity and wasting no time at all to make an impact, second-year freshman Tre'Quon Fegans taking advantage of an opportunity and Lincoln Riley having the correct mentality when it comes to defense, saying "We're going to play great defense here." The Helium Boys also look into what stocks took a hit over the weekend with Alex Grinch being at the top of the list followed by a failing pass rush and Riley claiming the Trojans are two plays away from being undefeated in conference play. Chris and Shotgun also look forward at the Trojans trip to Eugene this weekend for a matchup against No. 6 Oregon Saturday in Autzen Stadium, featuring a showdown between last season's Heisman Trophy award winner Caleb Williams and one of the frontrunners for the 2024 Heisman Trophy, Ducks quarterback Bo Nix. The Helium Boys then answer your questions from Twitter and email discussing the desired defense scheme as well as some of the USC players saying they didn't watch the film of the Washington game afterwards. Then during the overtime portion of the 'Take It or Leave It' section, Chris questions Shotgun on some of the top cartoon theme songs. On the latest edition of Tunnel Vision, USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Shotgun Spratling and Jack Smith are back in studio talking about the huge breaking news that head coach Lincoln Riley has pulled the trigger and fired his longtime defensive coordinator Alex Grinch. The guys give their initial reaction to the news that Trojan football fans have been longing for since the end of last season and if they feel it can make a difference with only two games left in the regular season. USC's 52-42 loss to Washington Saturday night in the Coliseum was a defensive nightmare and apparently was the final straw for Riley, who brought Grinch with him from Oklahoma. Riley took a lot of heat when he made the decision to keep his entire staff intact even after the embarrassing loss to Tulane in the Cotton Bowl. Fans wanted Grinch gone and Riley's gamble on the importance of staff continuity simply did not pay off. Our crew talks about all of the good (mostly offense) and bad (mostly defense) from the game against the Huskies and some of the historic marks that were set including the most points Washington has ever scored against USC (achieved in the first half alone) and the Trojan defense giving up 34+ points in six straight games for the first time in program history. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing yet another disappointing defensive effort for the Trojans, this time a 52-42 loss to No. 5 Washington in the Coliseum. During the show as Ryan and Coach talked about the poor defensive performance news broke that defensive coordinator Alex Grinch had been fired, so they talk about that breaking news at the end of the episode. The Huskies were able to score on 8 of their 10 drives including 7 touchdowns for a ridiculous average of 5.2 points per drive. Coach Hyde feels it was a great crowd there for Homecoming and the offense scored enough to win the game, but the defense was questionable in every aspect of the game. Coach wants to know if this defense is even capable of getting a stop. He doesn't think all of the best players are playing and by now you should know which players can play and which cant. He's questioning the defensive philosophy where they can't even line up correctly or respond to offensive shifts, leaving the defense confused with huge gaps outside for opposing backs to run through. Coach would love to see head coach Lincoln Riley step in and start coaching on the defensive side and allow Kliff Kingsbury to take over and run the offense. The defense keeps doing the same thing and nothing changes and there are so many gaps in coverage that Coach said it looks like they are only playing with 9 guys out there. Coach says the kids are playing hard but with the combination of everything that is going wrong, the defense is simply horrible. With the loss the Trojans fell out of the AP Poll top-25 for the first time in the Riley era. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Jack Smith and Connor Morrissette (aka Triple-Double) are back in studio to preview what could be a pivotal game for the Trojans, a matchup with the only undefeated team in the Pac-12, No. 5 Washington Huskies. With USC's loss to Utah two weeks ago the margin for error in the race to win the conference is essentially gone, especially with the gauntlet of a schedule the Trojans have left. For Lincoln Riley to have any shot at winning the Pac-12 in its final year of existence, his squad will need to take care of business against the Huskies on Saturday. Jack and Connor talk about what the players and coaches said this week during practice as they get ready for this important contest and discuss the news and notes including the unfortunately season ending injury for safety Zion Branch. They also break down the newly released Big Ten schedule with dates for 2024 where the Trojans travel to Michigan, Minnesota, Maryland, Washington and UCLA and host Penn State, Wisconsin, Rutgers and Nebraska. Both hosts will be in the Coliseum for this one and they give their thoughts on how it will turn out including their picks against the spread (Trojans are a 3 point underdog to Washington). In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio talking about USC's narrow escape from Berkeley keeping their hopes of a Pac-12 title hope alive. The Trojans reward is a very tough Washington squad that is undefeated on the season and will head to Los Angeles this weekend in what is an absolutely pivotal game for Lincoln Riley and his squad. With the team back out on the practice field Tuesday, Ryan and Connor talk about what Riley, defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and the players had to say about that Cal win and facing the Huskies this weekend. The guys also talk about the initial College Football Playoff rankings where the Trojans ended up at No. 20 and will finish the season by facing No. 5 Washington, No. 6 Oregon and No. 19 UCLA over the next three weeks. Quarterback Caleb Williams talked about USC's playoff hopes still being alive even with two losses because of the tough games left on the schedule and the opportunity to get four-straight quality wins (including the Pac-12 Championship Game). No one is expecting the Trojans to make a run, so that actually can take a little bit of the pressure off heading into this final stretch of the season. The Helium Boys Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino reuniting to react to USC's off-the-rails 50-49 win at California in this Halloween edition of the Helium Boys Podcast. They break down the back-and-forth battle with the Golden Bears that was settled by a defensive stop of a two-point conversion attempt, improving the Trojans to 7-2 on the season. Shotgun and Chris discuss the notable takeaways, including the dynamic defensive impact of Eric Gentry, USC actually sticking with the run game for four quarters and how Bear Alexander's presence in the second half completely transformed the defense. Throughout the episode, Chris also plays a game, stopping the action to ask Shotgun to react to a spooky fact or guess the horror film a quote is from. The Helium Boys Halloween episode opens with the 'Two-Minute Drill' as each gives his initial reactions to the Trojans' win over Cal and the biggest things that stood out. In the Stock Up/Stock Down segment, the podcasting duo discuss who/what impressed, including USC's fight and the rising expectations being greater than the appreciation for fans. The Helium Boys also look into what stocks took a hit over the weekend such as nickelback Jaylin Smith and the rising number of plays Lincoln Riley says the Trojans need to fix on each side of the ball. Chris and Shotgun also look forward at the "really cool opportunities" the Trojans have in front of them, starting with a matchup against No. 5 Washington Saturday in the Coliseum, featuring a showdown between last season's Heisman Trophy award winner Caleb Williams and the current favorite for the 2024 Heisman Trophy, Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. The Helium Boys then answer your questions from Twitter, email and Instagram discussing Lincoln Riley/Alex Grinch, the defense, Halloween costumes and Halloween candy. Then during the overtime portion of the 'Take It or Leave It' section, Chris questions Shotgun on the top candy in a variety of states. Finally, the podcast concludes with the Helium Boys giving their score predictions for the USC-Washington matchup (4:30 p.m. PDT) in the Coliseum this weekend. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing what was a fitting end to a longstanding rivalry with Cal, a 50-49 Trojan victory that featured an on-field protest that delayed the start of the game, an untimed down after halftime before the third quarter started and a spectacular two-point conversion pass defense that sealed the victory for USC. Coach Hyde talks about the lack of discipline he has seen on this team, from penalties (11 for 101 yards for USC) to missed assignments to lack of attention to detail, and how that is going to need to change to have a chance at winning any of the remaining three games on the schedule. Players need to perform the assignment they are given and coaches need to stick with what is working and not get away from successful strategies. Coach Hyde wants to see more consistency and concentration from everyone in the program, from the players on the field to everyone on the sidelines. On that untimed down played before the start of the third quarter, Coach Hyde says he has never saw a play like in all his years coaching and watching college football. He also said that USC has the skill players to be a great offense with one of the top running backs in the country in MarShawn Lloyd, of of the top quarterbacks in Caleb Williams and great receivers, but doesn't see any identity in the offense right now. Coach wants to see things be more balanced to make it harder on opposing defenses instead of the Trojans are making it harder on themselves. On defense Coach feels like those turnovers were the key to getting the win. Somehow the defense made Fernando Mendoza look like Aaron Rodgers. There were gaping holes in the first half for the run game with guys taking the long gap. Second half was better with Eric Gentry playing better and Bear Alexander returning. Too many penalties on the secondary players. Coach says that the special teams problems are all about discipline, staying in lanes, when to run it out, not trying to be a star just go by the rules of where you are on the field. All of these mistakes in the kicking game are not acceptable and coach says you will lose games when you can't do those little things on special teams. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! On the latest edition of Tunnel Vision, USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino are back together again in studio fresh off their Bay Area trip for what will likely be the very last USC weekender for the foreseeable future, an instant classic where the Trojans narrowly escaped with a 50-49 victory over the Sturdy Golden Bears. USC once again started off the game strong before allowing Cal to jump out to multiple two-score leads, including a 14-point fourth quarter lead that looked like the end for the Trojans. USC regained the lead thanks to a Cal fumble and when the Bears drove to tie the game with under a minute left, head coach Justin Wilcox decided to end it right there with a two-point try. Jaylin Smith made the defensive play of the day, batting away the pass in the end zone to preserve the one point victory for the Men of Troy. The guys talk about this crazy game that started with an on-field protest, had a halftime controversy that allowed USC to attempt a first half field goal right before the start of the third quarter and of course the dramatic ending that kept the Trojans hopes of a Pac-12 title technically alive. On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Jack Smith and Connor Morrissette (aka Triple-Double) are back in studio to preview what needs to be USC's get-right game, a road trip to Berkeley to take on the California Golden Bears. This season Cal has actually been sneaky good on offense, especially the ground game, but not as stout on defense. The Trojans have struggled most of the season on defense and lately the offense has been much more pedestrian. Can USC finally turn things around and get a much needed win against this long-time rival? Jack and Connor talk about what a weird week of practice it was, with Lincoln Riley out sick for a couple of days before returning on Wednesday. Riley addressed the media and talked about pushing himself too hard before the Utah game and several other topics. They also discuss what defensive coordinator Alex Grinch had to say about what went wrong in the Utah game. Both hosts will be in the Berkeley for this one and talk about how they think it will play out and give their picks against the spread (Trojans are favored by a 10.5 points). In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio talking about what is turning out to be a strange week around the USC football program, with back-to-back losses and now head coach Lincoln Riley unable to attend practice due to an undisclosed illness. Riley was coughing before he addressed the media after the Utah game and he came out alone instead of with the usual two players alongside him (no players were made available after the game). Riley also didn't make his normal Monday appearance on Trojans Live and then on Tuesday we were informed that Riley was home sick per doctor's orders and there was no timetable given for his return. The guys talk about how practice felt on Tuesday with Riley's absence and outside wide receivers coach Dennis Simmons taking over. They also discuss what defensive coordinator Alex Grinch had to say after the defense's terrible performance against Utah where the Utes had their season high of yards (482) and safety Sione Vaki went off catching 149 yards in passes and two touchdowns. USCFootball.com's Helium Boys, Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino, were reunited over the weekend and are back together to try to break down and make sense of USC's 34-32 loss to Utah in this edition of the Helium Boys Podcast. They react to the Trojans' first loss at the Coliseum under Lincoln Riley, a defeat to dreaded Utah on a field goal as time expired, that drops them to 6-2 on the season and all but guarantees USC will not be able to make the College Football Playoff in the final season of the four-team era. Shotgun and Chris discuss the notable takeaways, including USC's refusal to lean heavily on its run game, the emotions that poured from Bear Alexander after his late targeting penalty, whether or not the Trojans should have gone down at the 1-yard line and the decision by Lincoln Riley to not make any players available to the media. The Helium Boys open with the 'Two-Minute Drill' giving their initial reactions to the Trojans' loss to Utah and the biggest things that stood out to each of them. In the Stock Up/Stock Down segment, the podcasting duo discuss who impressed, including Romello Height, the Branch brothers and the revamped offensive line. The Helium Boys also look into what stocks took a hit over the weekend like the trust in the run game and the two-point conversion play calling, including the attempted use of cut blocking by the offensive line. They also look at how the collapse of College Football Playoff goals will affect the team going forward and whether this could be a situation that releases the pressure from players, allowing them to go out and have fun and play to their potential going forward. Chris and Shotgun also look at the upcoming matchup against California and the Golden Bears grab bag of quarterbacks. The Helium Boys then answer your questions from Twitter, email and Instagram discussing the defense and the overall vibe of the team. Then during the overtime portion of the 'Take It or Leave It' section, Chris questions Shotgun on the top five and bottom five fruits. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing what was an inexcusable Trojan loss to the Utes in the Coliseum. Utah came in without their star quarterback or best pass catcher and still was able to put up 482 yards of offense on the USC defense, the Utes highest total of the season. Safety Sione Vaki got whatever he wanted in the passing game, torching the Trojans for nearly 150 yards and two touchdowns while quarterback Bryson Barnes had his best game of the season including a 26-yard run that set up the game winning field goal. Coach Hyde and Ryan talk about how week after week this USC defense allows opponents to accomplish new heights and achieve high water marks, something that simply shouldn't be happening to a team with championship aspirations. Coach Hyde thinks this team is simply unsound on defense and they are asking players to do impossible tasks like having rush end Braylan Shelby to rush the passer but also cover the speedy Vaki on a wheel route of of the backfield. That is not sound football. Hyde says there is always a breakdown somewhere and it is due to bad discipline not only on defense, but from what he's seeing throughout the football program. You never want to beat yourself and with bad discipline USC did exactly that on the final drive for Utah. Coach Hyde thinks Lincoln Riley is a great playcaller with an amazing track record but right now quarterback Caleb Williams isn't making the plays he was last season. Coach thinks that defenses have adjusted and that Riley needs to as well to help Williams have the kind of success he had last season. He doesn't think Riley believes in the run game and he wants this team to be more physical to become a championship level team. Overall Coach Hyde feels bad for the fan base, a group of loyal Trojans who want to be proud of, not embarrassed because of, the product out on the field. With all of the problems on this USC football team, its hard for fans to be proud of what they are seeing. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! On the latest edition of Tunnel Vision, USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Shotgun Spratling and Jack Smith are in studio discussing the first ever loss in the Coliseum during the Lincoln Riley era, a 34-32 heartbreaker at the hands of Utah. After the game winning field goal as time expired, Riley and quarterback Caleb Williams are now 0-3 against the Utes over the past two seasons. After getting blown out on the road against Notre Dame, USC was looking to bounce back and get some revenge against a Utah squad that was extremely banged up. Backup quarterback Bryson Barnes stepped up his game, completing 14 of his 23 passes for three touchdowns and one interception and safety Sione Vaki dominated on offense with 9 rushes for 68 yards and 5 catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns. The Utes had 482 yards of offense, their highest total of the season. The Trojans offense had success running the ball with MarShawn Lloyd and Austin Jones rushing for nearly 10 yards a pop, but the duo only got 12 carries which limited their impact. Williams was 24 of 34 for 256 and didn't have a touchdown but did have the go-ahead TD scramble late in the fourth quarter. On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Jack Smith, RJ Abeytia and Connor Morrissette (aka Triple-Double) are back in studio to preview USC's most important game of the entire regular season, a conference home matchup against Utah, the team that defeated the Trojans twice last season including the Pac-12 Championship game. The No. 18 Trojans of course had a rough go of it at Notre Dame while the No. 14 Utes pulled away from California in Salt Lake City. The guys talk about this pivotal game for head coach Lincoln Riley and give their thoughts on USC's struggling offense against what could be an elite Utah defense and a potentially resurgent Trojan defense against heaving injured and mostly one dimensional Utes offense. All three hosts will be in the Coliseum for this one and talk about how they think it will play out and give their picks against the spread (Trojans are favored by a touchdown). Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return with a speed version of the Helium Boys Podcast following USC's trip to South Bend for its annual matchup with intersectional rival Notre Dame. The Helium Boys react to the Trojans' first loss of the season, a 48-20 loss to Notre Dame where the Irish won the turnover battle, 5-0, and were able to win in the trenches. Shotgun and Chris discuss the notable takeaways, including the troubles with the offensive line and what possible solutions there are for fixing the issues in front of quarterback Caleb Williams, who threw a career-high three interceptions -- all under duress -- and was sacked six times. Normally, the Helium Boys open with the 'Two-Minute Drill' giving their initial reactions to the Trojans' latest matchup, but this is the speed version. The 'Two-Minute Drill' was shortened to the 'One-Minute Drill' after the show's offensive coordinator called back-to-back running plays and wasted our timeouts. The speed version also incorporates a modified Stock Up/Stock Down section with the podcasting duo discussing who impressed, including Christian Roland-Wallace, the Branch brothers and Tackett Curtis. The Helium Boys also look into what stocks took a hit over the weekend such as the offensive line, the Heisman Trophy winner and the Trojans' special teams. Chris and Shotgun also look at the Trojans' highly anticipated upcoming matchup against nemesis Utah this weekend after the Utes were able to hand Lincoln Riley and Williams two of their three losses last season. The Helium Boys use your submissions during the 'Take It or Leave It' section and then answer your USC mailbag questions, picking a couple to dive into before the timer goes off. Finally, the podcast concludes with the Helium Boys giving their score predictions for the USC-Utah matchup (5 p.m. PDT) from the Coliseum this weekend. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio giving their analysis following USC's 48-20 loss to Notre Dame, looking at what went wrong and if the Trojans can get back on track with an important game against Utah coming up. Both Connor and Ryan were in South Bend for this debacle of a game that generated a wave of concern across the Trojan fan base that knows there are no breaks in this tough back half of the schedule for USC football. They give their thoughts on what they saw and heard and how much this suboptimal Trojan effort impacts their prognosis for the rest of the 2023 college football season. Head coach Lincoln Riley remains optimistic that this is a team that can turn things around, fix the issues and win the Pac-12 conference. The guys talk about what Riley had to say after the game, during his Trojans Live appearance and also after practice on Tuesday and if they agree with his assessment of this 6-1 USC football squad. They also heard from defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and several players and they discuss what everyone else had to say following this tough loss. Looking forward, two-time defending conference champion Utah comes to the Coliseum on Saturday and the guys talk about the level of importance that rests on this contest considering Riley lost to the Utes twice last season and need to bounce back from their worst effort of the season. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing what turned out to be the largest margin of defeat for the Trojans during the Lincoln Riley era, a 48-20 beatdown at the hands of Notre Dame. A huge factor in the loss was the fact that USC turned the ball over five times, including a career high three interceptions for Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Caleb Williams, and surrendered a kickoff return for a touchdown. Coach Harvey Hyde talks about how this was an extremely difficult weekend for USC fans, seeing their team go down hard on a national stage in a historic rivalry with thousands of Trojans making the trip to South Bend. He also said it was embarrassing for fans to watch how this team played, getting dominated in all three phases but especially the offense and special teams units. It was a painful experience and there is no time for the team to lick its wounds with Utah coming into the Coliseum this weekend. The Coach talks about how the USC offense couldn't get anything going, with the offensive line struggling making Williams look uncomfortable and a run game that just couldn't generate consistent production. Notre Dame played a lot of man defense and limited the separation for USC's wide receivers, making it even tougher for Williams to find someone while under pressure. Defensively the squad did play better, but it was against a more limited Fighting Irish offense. Special teams were a major issue and one that doesn't seem to be improving as the season advances. On the latest edition of Tunnel Vision, USCFootball.com's Connor Morrissette, Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are in studio discussing what ultimately became a disastrous road trip for the Trojan football team over the weekend. USC fell 48-20 in a beatdown at the hands of arch rival Notre Dame. USC quarterback Caleb Williams had the worst game of his career throwing three first half interceptions, which all led to Notre Dame touchdowns. The Trojan defense took a step forward, but the unit was unable to bail out a bad night from USC's offense. The Trojans ultimately lost the turnover battle to the Fighting Irish 5-0. In this EMERGENCY edition of the Peristyle Podcast USCFootball.com's team of Ryan Abraham, Jack Smith, Connor Morrissette, Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino recorded their thoughts about USC's 48-20 loss at Notre Dame in the car on their drive back from South Bend to Chicago (at 2 in the morning). The guys take turns giving their thoughts on what went wrong as the Trojans turned the ball over five times to the Fighting Irish's zero, allowed six sacks and 11 tackles for loss while only generating one TFL and no sacks and the backbreaker, giving up a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that put any chance of a late comeback out of reach. They also discuss what head coach Lincoln Riley and quarterback Caleb Williams had to say after the disappointing loss, the only two players or coaches that spoke to the media after the game. As this was literally recorded in the car driving in the middle of the night, we apologize if the audio quality isn't as high as our usually shows recorded in studio. On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Jack Smith, Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka Triple-Double) are back in studio to preview what will be No. 10 USC's toughest test to date, a road trip to South Bend to take on No. 21 Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are playing their fourth ranked team in a row, going 1-2 over that stretch, and desperately need a win against USC to get their season back on track. The Trojans are a perfect 6-0 but the play on the field has been far less than perfect, so a win against a ranked opponent would go a long way to quieting the critics (at least partially). The guys talk about everything they saw and heard from USC practice and media availability this week which featured a lot of talk about the state of the Trojan defense plus injury status for freshman wide receiver Zachariah Branch and the overall health of the cornerback position. All three hosts are heading to Chicago on Friday for this one and they give their thoughts on how they think the game will go. Interestingly enough, through the first six games USC was at least a three touchdown favorite in every contest (covering only twice) and this weekend the Trojans come in as a three point underdog. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio discussing the hottest topic surrounding the Trojan football team, the performance of the USC defense at the halfway point of the season. From the outside many of the same issues this defense had last year appear to still be there, breakdowns in coverages, poor tackling and the inability to get stops late in games. But hearing from Lincoln Riley and players and coaches, their view is the defense is much improved over last season. Ryan and Connor give their thoughts on how the defense is trending after six games as USC is now heading into its most important and difficult stretch of the season. They also give an injury update including wide receiver Zachariah Branch as well as cornerbacks Domani Jackson and Christian Roland-Wallace. USC head coach Lincoln Riley told reporters that Branch and Roland-Wallace weren't full participants but Jackson was. The guys also look ahead to the biggest game of the season to this point, a tough road trip to archrival Notre Dame. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return with the Helium Boys Podcast following a wild 3OT battle between USC and Arizona. The Helium Boys react to the Trojans' 43-41 triple overtime win over the Wildcats where a slow start and continued flaws nearly cost USC its pristine record and likely would have if Superman Caleb Williams didn't put the team on his back. Shotgun and Chris discuss the notable takeaways, including who is to blame and what needs to be fixed to get USC heading in the right direction after three subpar performances in a row. They open with the 'Two-Minute Drill' giving their initial reactions to the Trojans' late-night victory in the Coliseum. The duo then breaks down the hold-your-breath and hold-your-beer moments with Stock Up/Stock Down, discussing who impressed, including the Heisman Trophy winner making a push for No. 2 by using his legs and a handful of defenders that stood out. The Helium Boys also look into what stocks took a hit over the weekend such as the physicality in the trenches, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. Chris and Shotgun also look at the Trojans' upcoming rivalry matchup as they head halfway across the country to take on Notre Dame in South Bend this weekend. The Helium Boys also answer your USC mailbag questions, which cover a number of varied topics from the defense and missed tackles to Caleb Williams and offensive playcalling. Finally, the podcast concludes with the "Take It or Leave It" section centered around things from USC's triple-overtime win, including special teams play and the new overtime format, as well as sugary concoctions that may have to change their formulas in California. The Helium Boys also give their score predictions for the USC-Notre Dame matchup (4:30 p.m. PDT) from Indiana this weekend. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together discussing another clunker of a game for the Trojans, this time a 43-41 triple overtime victory over unranked Arizona at home in the Coliseum. Coach Hyde, as usual, has some strong opinions on how this USC football team performed late Saturday night against the Wildcats. Early in the game when the offense wasn't clicking and wide receivers were not getting open, he wanted to see head coach Lincoln Riley start using the backs and tight ends in the passing game. Coach Hyde also wanted to see the Trojans commit to the run game with Arizona dropping more defenders back into coverage. On the defensive side of the ball Coach Hyde thinks there are still too many rotations going on and he wants to see fewer players coming in and out of the game. He was also concerned that backup quarterback Noah Fifita had so much success against this USC defense, to the tune of 302 yards and five passing touchdowns. In general Coach Hyde doesn't want to see things be so complicated for the Trojans, he wants to see USC get back to basics so there isn't any confusion for the players on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. After the game quarterback Caleb Williams once again said every team that plays USC is giving them their best shot, it is a game that all opponents circle on their calendars. Coach Hyde talks about that and how a blueblood program like the Trojans has to deal with being a target week after week. At the end of the day, the Trojans did just enough to win the game, but he feels that this roster has too much talent stacked up to deliver this type of performance at home against an unranked opponent. As usual the guys answer listener questions via email, text message and voicemail to finish up the show. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Jack Smith, Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino are in studio discussing one of the wildest USC football games in recent memory, a 43-41 triple overtime victory over Arizona late Saturday night in the Coliseum. Right out of the gate, the Trojans looked out of sorts from the jump on offense, defense and special teams including three-straight 3-and-outs for Caleb Williams and the offense and three-straight scores allowed by the defense. USC, which hadn't trailed at all through the first five games, was down 17-0 early in the second quarter with the game on the verge of being out of hand. When the offense finally started to get on track with a huge pass to Brenden Rice, momentum shifted once again when Williams fumbled on the next play. Jacobe Covington made the play of the day with his interception, giving USC life and more importantly a short field. Williams was able to cut the deficit to a field goal at halftime, keeping the game from getting out of hand. The guys talk about the Trojans comeback in the second half, that included an 8-point lead early in the fourth quarter, including USC's botched field goal attempt to win the game at the end of regulation and Williams winning the game in the third OT on his weird looking quarterback keeper play. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette are back in studio talking about how the Trojans are undefeated and scoring 40+ points a game, but still have major questions on the defensive side of the ball. After coming out of the game early in the San Jose State, Nevada and Stanford games, quarterback Caleb Williams has had to play until the final whistle on the road at ASU and Colorado because the USC defense hasn't been able to get stops late in the game. We've heard from head coach Lincoln Riley and defensive coordinator Alex Grinch following Tuesday's practice and both coaches addressed the Trojans defensive issues in the second half in Boulder. The guys talk about what the Riley, Grinch and the defensive players had to say about the shortcomings of the defense and the challenges they will face against an very potent Arizona offense. Riley said the focus this week has been on two fronts, tackling better on the perimeter and keeping the quarterback in the pocket. They also talk about the player rotation on the defensive side of the ball including what Riley said about inside linebacker Eric Gentry slowing working his way back into the rotation following his injuries and time away from the field. On the injury front they talk about safety Max Williams and wide receiver Zachariah Branch missing the Colorado game but being on track to play against Arizona according to Riley. The duo discuss the notable takeaways, including who is to blame and what needs to be fixed to get USC back on track. Shotgun and Chris open with the 'Two-Minute Drill' giving their initial reactions to the Trojans' win at Colorado, including Chris' take on the atmosphere for the 10 a.m. local kickoff. The duo then breaks down the hold-your-breath victory with Stock Up/Stock Down, discussing who impressed, including the Caleb Williams to Brenden Rice connection and the potential of kissing Heismans as well as multiple USC defenders that showed out despite the foibles of the defense as a whole. The Helium Boys also look into what stocks took a hit over the weekend such as the Trojans' "the longer it goes, the better we get" motto that has been what they have carried with them throughout the offseason.. Chris and Shotgun also look at the Trojans' upcoming matchup with Arizona this weekend, and the troubles the Wildcats could present after pushing USC until the end last year in Tucson.
