Buffalo Bills 2026 Free Agency Week 1 Recap: DJ Moore Trade, CJ Gardner-Johnson Signing & Draft Needs In this episode of Circling the Wagons, we recap the Buffalo Bills' first week of 2026 free agency, grading key moves and updating the team's draft needs. They review releases of Taylor Rapp, Dane Jackson, and Curtis Samuel, then discuss trading for Bears WR DJ Moore (Bills send a second-round pick and receive Moore plus a fifth), which they feel upgrades the receiver room despite the cost. They like the one-year signing of S CJ Gardner-Johnson, re-signing C Connor McGovern, and discuss trading Taron Johnson to the Raiders for a pick swap while debating replacement CB Dee Alford. They give mixed reactions to signing edge Bradley Chubb, adding depth with S Geno Stone, and bringing back QB Kyle Allen, then note departures including David Edwards and Reggie Gilliam to the Patriots. The Buffalo Bills entered the offseason with clear needs at the safety position. The release of Taylor Rapp along with the departure of Damar Hamlin (for now) had created a hole opposite of starter Cole Bishop. The Bills have added CJ Gardner-Johnson and Geno Stone in free agency, but many fans and analysts still believe the Bills need to spend a high draft pick on a safety. Join Judge and Tilt as they assess this year's safety draft class and the approach the Bills might take now that they have added a few free agents. Taylor Rapp and Evan Washburn join the show
On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren of SB Nation to discuss a handful of Buffalo Bills topics, including an examination of their 2024 offseason one year later and the never ending saga of James Cook this offseason. It's been an eventful offseason for Brandon Beane and company since losing to Kansas City in the AFC title game this past January. Rather than focusing on that today the guys are going back a ful year to review how the 2024 offseason went. They reflect on and discuss some of the Bills biggest moves, including the re-signings of David Edwards, AJ Epenesa and Taylor Rapp, contract extensions for Dion Dawkins, Taron Johnson and Spencer Brown, signing Curtis Samuel and the draft selections of Keon Coleman, Cole Bishop and Ray Davis. As for Cook, how his contract and Cook's participation with the Bills plays out this season remains mysterious as the Bills begin mandatory minicamp this week but it's certainly a step in the right direction that he reported for minicamp. Matt and Patrick wonder who may blink first if push comes to shove this summer at training camp and potentially into the regular season. That plus some commentary on head coach Sean McDermott and plenty more. You can follow Matt on Twitter @MattRichWarren and be sure to check out Buffalo Rumblings for your (really good) daily Bills content.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. 1:30pm Hour 1: How George Wilson thinks Taylor Rapp will do in his second season in the NFL.
On this episode of Talking Buffalo, it's another edition of The Podbag as Patrick Moran is responding to comments, takes and questions submitted by listeners covering several topics, including an incredibly high ceiling projection for Buffalo Bills safety Cole Bishop going into his second season. It's no secret Brandon Beane and the Buffalo staff were extremely thrilled to land Bishop in the second round of the draft last year. Unfortunately for everyone Bishop's rookie season didn't go as hoped. He got injured in training camp during the summer to take him out of a three-way competition to start at safety and seemed to play catchup for a lot of the season after returning, especially in his first start in Houston in Week five where he looked lost out there multiple times. Injuries to Damar Hamlin and Taylor Rapp led to Bishop starting late in the season and again in the playoffs and while he struggled some (like everyone else in the secondary) he did show flashes of being a very good player. That leads someone in this week's Podbag to provide a hot (understatement) take that Bishop will be a Pro Bowl or even All Pro safety this year in his sophomore campaign. Patrick discusses that while obviously tempering those kind of expectations. Also there's a handful of questions and comments about the NFL schedule that was officially released on Wednesday. How does Patrick feel about it and what did he like and dislike the most now that the slate has been revealed? Also discussed are special teams being overrated, a fair evaluation of Beane, passing on Gabe Davis, some fans of this podcast and someone who's clearly not a fan of Nine Eleven Tavern wings. That and much more.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red'sat 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, its another edition of The Podbag and Patrick Moran is responding to several takes and questions from listeners, including some pretty significant criticism on some of prospect selections in both the seven round Buffalo Bills mock drafts over the past two weeks on the show. One of Patrick's favorite content creators in the business, Anthony Prohaska of Cover 1 joined Talking Buffalo yesterday to play Brandon Beane in a mock draft. The first round went reasonably find but things fell apart on night two due to a few surprise picks and the refusal of Miami to agree to a trade up, throwing a big monkey wretch in Anthony's plan. He ended up choosing Ohio State defensive end JT Tuimoloau and Texas safety Andrew Mukuba, and it wasn't warmly received by a lot of commenting fans. Patrick takes us inside the ropes of the mock and what led them to the picks while also defending them, saying that while the window dressing doesn't look that great doesn't mean they wouldn't be effective additions to the roster. There's also topics expressing the concern of Taylor Rapp and Cole Bishop being the starting safety tandem, someone hoping for a Tre White reunion, a skepticism about drafting any wide receiver of real interest, why Terry Pegula is a good Bills owner, the never ending James Cook drama and much more.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran goes over his biggest Buffalo Bills wildcard round takeaways on the heels of Buffalo's convincing win over Denver and how at least some of them my relate to their next opponent, Baltimore in the divisional round. The Bills gave up a big play for a touchdown to Denver on the opening series and then shut the door on them for the rest of the game. Patrick has thoughts on Matt Milano having by far his best game of the season and Von Miller, even without registering the sack turning back the clock with some extremely impressive pass rush reps. Offensively the game plan was obvious from the get go and Patrick's got thoughts on the complete transformation James Cook has made since entering the NFL primarily as a pass catching threat out of the backfield. The Bills running game coupled with the explosive plays that came in the air in the second half is the recipe for making this a long playoff run. They were plenty of other things to like and some not so much, including Taylor Rapp struggling, another special teams blunder and a red zone offense that while not costly against Denver, didn't execute well. Of course, it's all about Baltimore going forward and Patrick's got preliminary thoughts on that matchup and much more. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren from SB Nation to discuss several Buffalo Bills topics, including spotlighting some of the role players that have been making this 2024 season special. Josh Allen has been playing out of his mind and is a clear-cut frontrunner for MVP. He's not only a star in Buffalo but one of the biggest in the league if not all of sports. There's other "star" players on this team too but it's been the heavy contribution of several role/complimentary players that've allowed them to win 10 of their first 12 games. Some of the players specifically discussed by Patrick and Matt include Mack Hollins, Taylor Rapp, Dawson Knox, Dorian Williams, Ray Davis, Austin Johnson and Alec Anderson. They also talk about the job head coach Sean McDermott and wonder if McDermott's evolved both professionally and personally in regards to his relationships with the team over the past year. That plus realizing the Bills have been better off because of last offseason's departures, a look around the AFC and much more. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran discusses some of his biggest Week 13 takeaways for the Buffalo Bills on the hells of their lopsided 35-10 shellacking of San Francisco this past snowy Sunday night to improve to 10-2 on the season. The comfort of being home and knowing a raucous crowd will be behind you has always given the Bills a home field advantage late in the season and into the playoffs. However, Patrick discusses how the style of play and roster makeup for previous editions of the Bills in recent years didn't feel like they were suited to play their best in wintery Western New York. That's no longer the case as this year's team has underwent a huge identity shift on offense and the result is a (much) more physical brand of football that allows them to beat teams in several ways. While continuing to state he doesn't much care about the MVP race, Patrick admits it's at the point where he's at a loss for words if there's anyone out there who doesn't think Josh Allen is the league's most valuable player right now. This game is discussed as well as a shift in Josh's mental approach has him playing perhaps the best of his entire career. Other takeaways discussed is the emergence of Taylor Rapp as a weapon, an early game penalty on San Francisco that turned the tide of the game more than people think, a dominant performance from the offensive line, who was responsible for allowing two long Deebo Samuel kickoff return, one area of the team that's still concerning and more. Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. We consider them THE most underrated spot for wings, pizza and other great food in Western New York plus it's a great place to drink and have a great time. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter: @PatrickMoranTB Blue Sky: @PatrickMoranTB.bsky.social Instagram: @PatrickMoranTB Facebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Joe From Queens to talk about the defense carrying the Buffalo Bills to a 30-20 road victory at the Indianapolis Colts to improve to 8-2 on the season and set up a showdown with Kansas City next Sunday in Orchard Park. It wasn't the prettiest game for the offense, not by a long shot but it didn't matter because Buffalo's defense was more than up to talk. Taron Johnson had a pick six on the Colts first offensive play of the game and the defense finished with four takeaways plus a key fourth down sack. The guys talk about the unit's mostly dominating performance, forcing three Flacco interceptions and a strip sack by Greg Rousseau that led to a Damar Hamlin fumble recovery. They also held Jonathan Taylor to just seven yards rushing on five carries on the second half after Taylor had 107 at halftime. It came on a day when the offense wasn't particular sharp, mostly understandable given they were down Keon Coleman and Amari Cooper coming into the game and lost Dalton Kincaid to a knee injury in the second quarter. Josh Allen threw two interceptions, both pretty ugly and also missed on a wide open Kincaid for a would-be touchdown. That said, he still threw for 280 yards and ran for 40 more while orchestrating a nail in the coffin 13-play, 84 yard drive following Taylor Rapp's interception to put the game away. Joe's got plenty of thoughts on Josh Allen's game, big picture things with the Bills and tons more. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's Substack Twitter: @PatrickMoranTB Facebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast YouTube: Talking Buffalo Podcast YouTube Channel Learn more about your ad choices.
