What does “home” sound like to you? For composer Reena Esmail, this was a question of invention, not recollection. Today, she is celebrated for the seamless interplay between her Western and Hindustani influences in her music, but her journey through craft, culture, and creativity was winding and often treacherous. In this episode of HearTOGETHER, composer Reena Esmail joins host Tori Marchiony for a heartfelt conversation about growing up between two cultures and two religions, the toxicity of competition, and the importance of constantly challenging her own worldview. Lauren and Jeff welcome East Texas Singer/Songwriter Meredith Crawford into the Groove Lab to talk about her musical journey, and finding her voice. Check her out at www.MeredithCrawford.com “Meredith Crawford has successfully taken something with a very definitive shape, and made it seem shapeless. Historically speaking, that kind of dreamy musical witchcraft has only been successfully accomplished by the likes of timeless wonder-women like Patsy Cline, Stevie Nicks, or the queen: Aretha Franklin; herself.” She was singing harmonies at the young age of 10 from the pew surrounded by strangers, to the Opry circuit around Texas by 16, and had fronted 3 bands by the age of 27. Just shy of 30, she has written over 200 songs, opened for Texas acts such as Hayes Carll, Sunny Sweeney, and Shiny Ribs, and has won several awards including Entertainer of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year (2 years running), Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Songwriter of the Year for East Texas. A dark horse in the running, her pinnacle of musical strength is perched upon raw, lyrical honesty delivered through painfully elegant vocals. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/groovelab/support

She absolutely enjoys being a mother, which has created a whole new perspective on life! Lauren's creative process in making her music, starts off by using voice memos on her phone to talk out or establish lyrics first. Then she teams up with her husband, Richie, helps write the music to match the lyrics. Lauren has enjoyed playing music with Richie, which has freed up her creative space to be able to incorporate unique instruments into her music, such as the harmonica! If you haven't heard Lauren I'd highly suggest listening to her as she uses the harmonica so beautifully! Lauren enjoys some of our Tyler Local Eats such as Stanley's Famous Pit Bar-B-Q and Cork. Lauren weighs in on the benefits and fun of attending and playing at Open Mic Nights. It's okay that people come up to play a song and it isn't very good. Success is built on failures. So if you're wanting to try out new songs, music, poetry, spoken word, etc, then find a local mic night and do you best! “Ninety percent of leadership is the ability to communicate something people want.” – Dianne Feinstein, U.S. Senator In my life, I have worked with and for some amazing leaders. Those were the people that I learned the most from and took the time to invest in me. Many of them were women. I only share that because in this episode we're talking about some of the disparities that are still out there in preparing women to lead. My guest this week is Meredith Crawford. She's smart, she's been in the trenches, and her mission is to help women step into the leadership roles they were meant to do and do it well. We hit the full spectrum on leadership issues but also touch on many of the particular issues women face in today's "modern" workforce and what they can do to lead better, lead smarter, and compete. I know you're going to enjoy this time with Meredith as much as I did! CHEERS! More on Meredith.. She started her agency after realizing that business leaders and entrepreneurs needed to do things differently in the future to win and maintain customer loyalty. Meredith is from Chandler, TX. East Texas born and raised, she just graduated from UT Tyler with a Bachelors in Accounting. . Meredith started playing music at the age of 10, originally playing in a choir and opera. By the time she was 13, she started playing old country music. After Meredith played her first show, she earned enough tips to go out and purchase her own guitar from a pawn shop, which was a Johnston guitar. Meredith's mother purchased her a "Fake Book" of a bunch of old country songs. She learned chords and eventually started writing her own songs. . The music scene in East Texas has been present for a while but it is growing, even though at times it may seem like it isn't. Meredith has played many different wineries, breweries, and restaurants in East Texas, mostly in Ben Wheeler, Tyler and Longview. Meredith prefers to incorporate all styles of music and likes to play all styles as she grows in her skills. Being able to jump around in genres allows her to connect with the audience a lot more because it appeals to so many different demographics. Country, old folk music, 60s/70s/80s rock, jazz, blues, they all inspire each other and create nostalgia for the audience. . Meredith was in school and would have to do typing tests, which she capitalized on that opportunity to learn new songs by writing the lyrics in these tests. This along with mastering cover songs helps create repetition, which sometimes gets "old". Learning a new song or changing up how you learn is important. This idea of consistency through change allows you to prepare for fighting past your own thoughts and helps you to focus. Sometimes while you're playing in a show your mind will wander and you with have some really weird or dumb thoughts, which can derail your performance if you're not prepared. Being nervous is okay, you just have to fight the urge to fly away or given into a momentary fear. Fighting your thoughts through self-awareness helps you to gain confidence, which is really important to being a musician/performer. These skills sometimes require experience in order to learn how to overcome the hurdles. Stay true to your goals and passions, which will create new opportunities to get your first show or your next show! . In Meredith's experience, booking shows really came through relationship and word of mouth. Sometimes venues would approach her and sometimes she would contact venues directly to play, however, the most effective way she was able to get booked was through relationships she built with other people. As she made friends with everyone and heard her play, she would end up getting referred to play different venues and shows. . Meredith gives some perspective on local music and how we should encourage artists through our business. Sometimes going to a restaurant or a venue for a show or there happens to be a show, you walk in with a preconceived notion on what you should get out of the restaurant, venue, band or music. The best thing you can do is to have an open mind when you're going into an establishment with a local artist. Engaging musicians before or after shows is always nice, as well as showing appreciation for what you're hearing or experiencing is greatly appreciated. Sometimes just showing up to a local show and giving it a chance, can be a great surprise! If you don't like it, you can always leave and do something else here in East Texas. Meredith highlights some of her favorite East Texas food joints: San Pedro's Restaurant - Chandler, TX The Forge Bar and Grill - Ben Wheeler, TX Moore's Store - Ben Wheeler, TX Stanley's Famous Pit Bar-B-Q - Tyler, TX WaWa's Seafood Shack - Athens, TX . Meredith loves sweet wines, specifically Moscato . Song: Transit - on the coming Meredith Crawford Album in January 2019 . It's time to get personal! In this episode we discuss how to use the capabilities of technology and your customer data points to add that personal touch to your marketing content with community champion, and owner of Solerno Media, Meredith Crawford. Learn about how personalization techniques are important to making your customer feel special, how to make intentional decisions when it comes to personalizing content that people would actually be interested in and how to avoid some of the many creepy factors that can sabotage your marketing efforts. Takeaways Your personalization possibilities are endless when based on the many data points you collect. Establishing a database can help you organize and store those data points. To get your max impact, make efforts to go to a deeper level when trying to connect with your customers. It's a better long-term strategy. To do personalization well, think about your customer and become aware of the patterns they exhibit. The best marketers make their personalization appear as coincidence. Be the best! Avoid the creep factor! Don't overtly say you've been watching customers' behavior and don't leave blank fields in email templates. Consistency is the key. Take time to get to know your customer and build out their journey. This has been shown to deliver best results. Develop a welcome email or welcome series. They get the relationship off on the right start and set the tone and expectations for future email communications. The biggest challenge is keeping emails fresh and innovative. Mix up the content (i.e. ebooks and graphics), topics and delivery format. The best way to get emotional impact is to be true to your brand, be value driven, step out of the expected and be authentic. Meredith Crawford is the founder and editor of the blog One Sheepish Girl. She loves knitting, crochet, photography, travel and so much more. She recently published her first crochet pattern book, Crochet with One Sheepish Girl. It is available for purchase on Amazon.com! In addition to her work with One Sheepish Girl, Meredith is also the communications director at a non-profit in Dallas, TX. In today’s episode Meredith opens up about how she struggles with self esteem, how she started a blog her junior year of college as a creative outlet for knitting, crocheting, and all things yarn. She shares how she used her blog as a way to document her journey to work on her confidence with a series called “blogging for confidence.” She describes the series as “silly challenges” to push her out of her comfort zone -things like wearing red lipstick and going to see a movie alone. We dive right in and talk about what success means/is for Meredith. “I think success for me is more than a list of accomplishments. It’s really understanding who you are, appreciating who you are and then putting that into what ever it is that you do.” “You are not your resume. You are not your instagram profile.”- @onesheepishgirl Meredith goes into detail about her journey after graduating college. She was in search of a full-time job but instead found herself with a book deal. While she fully admits the book deal is and was an amazing thing, she didn’t feel successful. She desperately wanted to find a job that would allow her to move out of her parents’ house. She wanted to feel like she was doing what she was supposed to do, find that job after college and show she had made it and show that she was successful. She did find a job and quickly realized it wasn’t going to bring her to where she wanted to be. “I did all the things I thought were going to make me feel successful or accomplished and it kind of did the opposite. It sort of brought a lot of these insecurities to the surface and just tore me to shreds.”
