This holiday week, we're bringing you two joyful stories from 2025. Reena Esmail's childhood in Los Angeles had two soundtracks: the Western classical music her parents loved, and the old, scratchy Bollywood tapes her paternal grandparents would play over and over. Those multicultural influences shaped what would become the driving question of her work: how do you invite people from different cultures onto the same stage to build a relationship and create music together? Composing is how Esmail has made her mark — by putting Western classical musicians in conversation with Indian artists, building bridges between violinists and sitar players, tabla drummers and western singers. She has also composed with unhoused singers from Skid Row, and her music has been performed by major orchestras and choirs all over the world. In May, as part of our series on California composers, host Sasha Khokha brought us this profile of Esmail. Artists are often the people in our communities who bring people together in ways that are creative, spontaneous, and surprising. That's true in the East Bay neighborhood of Point Richmond, where a local artist has created dozens of miniature fairy houses brimming with the personality of their imaginary inhabitants. In this story from April, Pauline Bartolone set out to explore these hidden treasures, and meet the person who created them. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Sayan sits down with Alisha Esmail from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada to unpack a founder truth most people avoid. Burnout is not a badge, it's a bottleneck. Alisha shares how burning out three times forced her to rebuild her business approach with stronger systems, clearer priorities, and a “harmony over balance” mindset. They break down her Five Tanks Framework (emotional, mental, physical, relational, spiritual) and a practical daily check-in to spot depletion before it snowballs. They also get real about using AI and automation to buy back time without losing the human edge. If you're building a company, leading a team, or just tired of the hustle narrative, this one is a clean reset. About the Guest: Alisha Esmail is a purpose-led founder behind one of Canada's recognized coffee brands and a builder working at the intersection of AI, human performance, and sustainability. She teaches founders how to reduce burnout through systems, clarity, and her Five Tanks Framework. Key Takeaways: Burnout repeats when recovery is treated like a break, not a redesign of how you operate. “Harmony” beats “balance”. Some seasons require intensity, but the system has to pay you back with time later. The line between healthy intensity and overextension is context. Most “emergencies” can wait till tomorrow. Use the “three cards” rule. Limit how often you pull people into after-hours work so you don't burn out the team. Five Tanks Framework is universal: emotional, mental, physical, relational, spiritual. The refill method can vary by personality and season. A fast daily audit works: draw five circles, label the tanks, score each 1 to 10, then act on the lowest tank first. Empty tanks show up as short temper, conflict, anxiety, spiraling thoughts, and feeling out of control. AI should not replace thinking. It should remove repetitive tasks so founders stay in strategy, creativity, and leadership. Practical AI win: rewrite intense messages to reduce conflict and prevent “emotional shrapnel” in relationships. Scarcity is not a reason to self-destruct. It can be a forcing function for creativity and smarter leverage. Clarity kills chaos: define your real end goal, then work backward instead of sprinting toward a vague “success.” Community Guidelines Check (YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn): Not violating. The cost of public health care insurance for the average Canadian family is increasing, it seems, along with the cost of nearly everything else in our everyday lives. A new study from the Fraser Institute indicates that the average Canadian family is seeing their health insurance costs 2.2 times higher, 1.6 times as fast as the rise in housing costs. Nadeem Esmail, director of health policy studies at the Fraser Institute and co-author of "The Price of Public Health Care Insurance, 2025, joins Brent Loucks to further reveal what the real cost of health care is for Canadians today.

Is being depressed a sign of kufr? Is my anxiety due to sinning? In this episode of Thinking Islam, we explore how Islamic approaches towards mental health challenge traditional stigmas and modern psychological frameworks with Dr Zoheir Esmail. From examining the concepts of qalb, nafs, and ruh to investigating whether depression could indicate spiritual disconnection, this conversation unpacks the complex relationship between faith, Eurocentric reason, and mental wellness. We delve into the history of Islamic approaches towards mental wellness, their developments, from early medieval scholars to contemporary applications in modern therapeutic practice. The conversation tackles the stigma surrounding mental health in Muslim communities, examining fears around hellfire and spiritual disconnection, whilst investigating the fascinating realm of occult sciences, jinn, and evil eye, questioning whether these should be taken seriously as therapeutic tools or understood as sophisticated placebo mechanisms that nonetheless offer genuine healing benefits. Dr Esmail reveals how Islamic psychology creates mental health wellbeing through understanding the human self as naturally anxious by creation, whilst offering spiritually integrated therapy that addresses religiosity and faith to achieve holistic healing that secular approaches often overlook. Dr Zoheir Ali Esmail is a Lecturer in Islamic Mysticism and Head of the Department of Mysticism and Spirituality. After qualifying as a chartered accountant, he pursued full-time studies in the seminaries of Syria and Qum for 12 years, earning a doctorate focusing on the philosophy and mysticism of Mullā Ṣadrā from the University of Exeter. His research spans mysticism, spiritual psychology, transcendental philosophy, and Quranic exegesis, bringing academic rigour and traditional Islamic scholarship to contemporary discussions on mental health and spirituality.

Sitars and Symphonies: LA Composer Reena Esmail Fuses Indian Ragas with Western Rhythms We continue our California composers series with Reena Esmail. How a UC Berkeley Professor Confronts Division With a Vision for Belonging Professor john a. powell spent much of his early life feeling like he didn't belong. At just 11 years old, he became estranged from his deeply religious family. After questioning church doctrine and not getting the answers he was looking for, powell — who spells his name in lowercase — left the church, and his father did not speak to him for five years. But that pivotal moment was the beginning of the path that led him to his life's work. powell is the director of the Othering and Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley, where he's also a professor of law, African American studies and ethnic studies. He's the author of two recent books, “Belonging Without Othering,” and “The Power of Bridging.” powell spoke with host Sasha Khokha as part of our series on Californians and resilience. In communities across the country, people are gathering to mark Pride. To celebrate, to march, and - in the face of an increase in anti-2SLGBTQIA+ sentiment - to fight for the right to safety, acceptance and belonging. Last week, 36-year-old Esmail experienced their first Pride parade ever. Having fled Yemen - where homosexuality is punishable by death - they recently arrived in Winnipeg and are finally experiencing moments of being accepted for who they truly are.In a narrow vote, citizens of Westlock, Alberta recently banned rainbow crosswalks and Pride flags from all municipal properties. Find out how Catie is fighting back.Toronto's Dre Govender, aka N9ne Godmother Dior, gave all of herself to her beloved kiki ballroom community - until she burnt out serving it. Tired of not finding the kind of queer community they needed, Lish decided to create it for themselves - and Queer Sober Social was born.
Sayyid Ḥaydar Āmulī was one of the most important, overtly Twelver, pre-Safavid interlocutors of the theoretical strand of mysticism developed by the school of Ibn ʿArabī. He critically contributed to the development of a more precise articulation of waḥdat al-Wujūd and elucidated a project which sought to bridge the gap between Ṣūfism and Shīʿism. Yet his inclusive, synergistic contribution remains understudied, despite an increasing stream of works of varying scope and depth, both within traditional Twelver circles and in modern scholarship. In this paper I trace Āmulī's use of waḥdat al-Wujūd in his largest surviving work of Qurʾānic exegesis, Al-Muḥīṭ al-aʿẓam fī taʾwīl kitāb Allāh al-muḥkam (completed in 777/1376) which remains an under investigated yet significant contribution to esoteric exegesis (taʾwīl) of the Qurʾān. This paper will show how dependant Āmulī's esoteric method of exegesis is on the framework of manifestation and correspondence which are key presuppositions of waḥdat al-Wujūd. For Sayyid Ḥaydar, the centrality of waḥdat al-Wujūd to esoteric interpretation is such that an exegete cannot be considered of those who are firmly established in knowledge (al-rāsikhūn fī al-ʿilm), the group identified in the Qurʾān (3:7) as knowing the esoteric meaning, without a sound knowledge if its principles. Thereafter, the paper will show the explanatory power of waḥdat al-Wujūd in positing alternative meanings to the scriptural sources in specific surviving sections of Āmulī's exegesis.

This week, we talk to composer Mac Quayle, who burst onto the scene in 2015 with his Emmy-winning score to Sam Esmail's mysterious, genre-bending series Mr. Robot. Since then, he's enjoyed healthy collaborations with Esmail and fellow showrunner Ryan Murphy, for whom he's scored everything from American Horror Story and Pose to 9-1-1. For his latest score, Quayle reunites with Esmail for a film this time -- Netflix's eerie adaptation of Rumaan Alam's 2020 novel Leave the World Behind. Following a well-off couple (Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke) on a vacation to a remote Airbnb with their two children, the film takes a bizarre turn when the home's owner, G.H. (Mahershala Ali), and his daughter (Myha'la) return and insist on staying there. Meanwhile, the power goes out, deer start behaving strangely, and one gets the sense the world is coming to an end. That sense is borne out in Quayle's approach, constructed from a custom library of sounds he built specifically for the movie. And now, Quayle talks to us about building a score to suit the end of the world. You can find Mac Quayle at his official website. Leave the World Behind is currently streaming on Netflix, and you can hear the score on your preferred streamer courtesy of Netflix Music. Let's talk about the latest Netflix movie “Leave the World Behind”. As usual this is one of many movies that use predictive programming to tell you about the potential chaos ahead. It doesn't surprise me that the movie was produced by the Obama owned “Higher Ground Productions”. The amount of symbolism and knowledge in this movie is ridiculous!! Hope you guys enjoy this little fly by! As always, don't forget to spread the fire!!This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4656375/advertisement

New disaster movie Leave The World Behind deals with themes that its writer-director, Sam Esmail, finds impossible to leave behind himself. Eight years ago, the filmmaker introduced himself with Mr. Robot – a techno-thriller piece of prestige TV that warned of the ways that society might grow fragmented, unreliable and open to exploitation, the more it hinged on technology. The show ran for four seasons, winning three Emmys along the way. Now, he's back with another tale that highlights the dangers of digitalism and how quickly our technology-dependent society might be dismantled with the click of a button, or more accurately the right line of hacker code. Leave The World Behind stars Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke as parents who escape to a Long Island vacation home, only for a stranger and his daughter – played by Mahershala Ali and Myha'la Herrold– to turn up unannounced in the middle of the night, bearing tales of electrical blackouts in New York City. It's a great watch that keeps you guessing till the very end, punctuated by some incredibly unnerving imagery that will rattle around in your brain for days after. And it speaks very much to anxieties of our time. In the years since Sam created Mr. Esmail, we've seen Russia hack the 2016 US election and Cambridge Analytica influence Brexit. We live in a time of global superpowers seeking to disrupt society via digital means. So maybe the question isn't why Sam would go back to the themes of Mr. Robot. Perhaps the question is: why wouldn't he?In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, which covers every important plot point and detail of this great movie, Sam discusses the huge departures made from the Rumaan Alam novel this movie adapts, the meaning of the menacing animals throughout this film, and how the TV show Friends came to be a massive motif running through Leave The World Behind – resulting in one of the best movie punchlines of 2023.
