This week: 'Close Encounters of the Colonial Kind,' the title of a talk given by our very own Kim TallBear (University of Alberta professor of Native Studies) at “Of the Land and Water: Indigenous Sexualities, Genders and Ways of Being,” hosted earlier this year in Whitehorse, YK by the Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning. Although rooted in her by-now familiar terrains of sexuality and science, Kim's monologue was a bit of a departure from what we're used to here on the podcast: delivered in the fictionalized voice of ‘IZ,' she's the personification of an Indigenous-driven movement of ‘unapologetic intellectual promiscuity,' or what IZ herself calls “critical polydisciplinamorous engagement.” An adaptation of her 2023 Substack post / 2021 essay by the same name, Kim's keynote so aroused our curiosity we had to have her flesh out the body of thought behind it. In the first of this two-part discussion, she walks MI host/producer Rick Harp and MI audio editor Cassidy Villebrun-Buracas through ‘IZ Speaks Back' and ‘IZ Confesses,' which together make up the first half of her talk. Brennen Leigh is an American songwriter, guitar player, mandolin player and singer whose to-the-point storytelling style has elevated her to cult status around the world. On this episode, she joins Rhett to talk about her new album, Ain't Through Honky Tonkin' Yet, being an artist in the age of digital, and the sacrifices that touring musicians make. Brennen explains how she gained confidence as an artist, and shares insight into her songwriting process, including how she determines whether a song is good enough for people to hear. Brenne Leigh's songs have been recorded by Lee Ann Womack, Rodney Crowell, Sunny Sweeney, Charley Crockett, and many others. As renowned for her musicianship as for her writing, it's easy to see how Leigh caught the ear of greats like Guy Clark and David Olney. Episode 239: She sounds like she was born into a country music family, but Sunny Sweeney was actually a late and somewhat reluctant bloomer as an artist. Her friends had to beg her to record her first album when she was playing bars in Austin. But that album got picked up by a Nashville label and got her to the Grand Ole Opry. The major label system was a bad fit, but Sunny has pursued an exemplary indie career in the years since. Her mix of smarts, sass and lonesome blues infuses her latest album Married Alone.
Sunny Sweeney stopped by Bobby's house to talk about her journey as a singer songwriter coming from Texas and trying to make it in Nashville. She talks about getting discovered on Myspace and signing her first record deal, to only be dropped from it, to three months later being nominated for an ACM Award. Sunny also discusses how she thought about quitting music until she kept receiving signs to keep going, like her most recent one of being featured in the Country Music Hall Of Fame. She also talks about the ups and downs of her personal life and the advice she'd give to people who want to pursue a music career. Sunny recently released a cover of Emmylou Harris song "Red Dirt Girl," and she talks about the seven-year process of recording that song and writing a letter to Emmylou asking if she'd sing harmonies on it! Sunny Sweeney is country singer-songwriter who released her fifth studio album, Married Alone, on Sept. 23, 2022, through her own Aunt Daddy Records label. Her music has the sounds and storytelling typical of classic country and Americana roots music. She cites Loretta Lynn, Waylon Jennings, Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks as her biggest inspirations. Her 2006 debut, Heartbreaker's Hall of Fame, was self-released and reissued by Big Machine Records. The follow-up, Concrete from 2011, came out through Republic Nashville and featured the song "From a Table Away," which reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Married Alone's beautiful title track is a duet with the legendary Vince Gill. In this episode, we focus on Sunny's Oct. 15 show at The Loft at City Winery in Philadelphia, PA. The 16-song set included the new track "Tie Me Up" and the Randy Weeks' song "Can't Let Go" that Lucinda Williams recorded for her breakthrough 1998 album Car Wheels on a Gravel Road and Sunny included on her 2014 album Provoked. Mason Marek is the embodiment of a true-blooded, blue-collared artist and musician. From New Ulm, Texas, Mason grew up playing with his grandpa, Gaylen, across the state. Early on, he began writing short stories while surrounded by true, genuine Texas Country Music. This storytelling passion would one day become the foundation for his songwriting. After the passing of his grandfather, Mason's love for playing faded as he lost the one who introduced him to music. During this period, he would have to deal with the loss of several other close family members. After he graduated, he began to find music again and rediscovered his passion. However, death would come again as his best friend of 17 years suddenly passed away. This time, however, it would be different. The music stayed and helped Mason cope with the losses he's experienced. Sunny Sweeney is a singer songwriter who has a knack for tackling life's difficult situations. Her most recent album was produced by Paul Cauthen and she collaborated with some heavy hitters like Vince Gill and Lori McKenna. Sunny takes a look at her own personal life in this album and explores difficult emotional territory. It's raw, and it's real. I had a chance to chat with her about the album. I hope you dig it!

Produced by Paul Cauthen and The Texas Gentlemen's Beau Bedford, Married Alone takes listeners on a vibey ride from rowdy juke joints to lonely hotel rooms over the course of twelve tracks. Ranging from sweet acoustic Americana to painful, pedal steel ballads to unrestrained breakup kiss-offs to an emotional duet with country legend Vince Gill, the album captures perfectly the broad spectrum of Sweeney's talents as a songwriter and a performer. Sweeney is also the host of a new morning show on Willie Nelson's exclusive SiriusXM channel, Willie's Roadhouse (ch. 59) and on the SXM App, dubbed Sunny Side Up. On weekday mornings, from 6 am until noon ET, Sweeney presents over four decades of classic country hits from the ‘50s through the ‘80s by artists including the channel's namesake Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline and many more. Even during these dog days of summer, singer-guitarist Sunny Sweeney‘s preferred A/C is Americana/Country. Sweeney first crept up over the honky-tonk horizon in 2006 with Heartbreakers Hall of Fame and earned her first three Top 40 Country singles on 2011’s Concrete, cementing herself as a must-hear for millions of new fans. Lauren and Jeff welcome East Texas Singer/Songwriter Meredith Crawford into the Groove Lab to talk about her musical journey, and finding her voice. Check her out at www.MeredithCrawford.com “Meredith Crawford has successfully taken something with a very definitive shape, and made it seem shapeless. Historically speaking, that kind of dreamy musical witchcraft has only been successfully accomplished by the likes of timeless wonder-women like Patsy Cline, Stevie Nicks, or the queen: Aretha Franklin; herself.” She was singing harmonies at the young age of 10 from the pew surrounded by strangers, to the Opry circuit around Texas by 16, and had fronted 3 bands by the age of 27. Just shy of 30, she has written over 200 songs, opened for Texas acts such as Hayes Carll, Sunny Sweeney, and Shiny Ribs, and has won several awards including Entertainer of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year (2 years running), Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Songwriter of the Year for East Texas. A dark horse in the running, her pinnacle of musical strength is perched upon raw, lyrical honesty delivered through painfully elegant vocals. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/groovelab/support
Sunny Sweeney stops in to the #MomentYouMadeIt to catch up on: pandemic touring, how she was discovered, where she found her sound and much more.
Sunny Sweeney chose a life in music for the most noble of reasons: She didn't want to get a real job. After graduating from Texas State University in 2001, she couldn't bear the thought of answering to a boss, so she became one, writing her own songs and leading her own band. Her breakthrough single, "From a Table Away," came in 2010. It's one of those songs that hits you in the heart, and it was inspired by a true story, which Sunny explains in this episode. We also hear about some of her other big songs and how she's developed as a singer-songwriter. Her latest album is a live set called Recorded Live At The Machine Shop Recording Studio, part of a format that didn't exist a year ago: a live livestream recording.https://sunnysweeney.com/https://www.songfacts.com/https://www.facebook.com/songfactshttps://twitter.com/Songfactshttp://pantheonpodcasts.com/https://twitter.com/pantheonpodsHosted and Edited by Corey O'Flanaganhttps://twitter.com/ofe1818https://www.instagram.com/coreyofe/corey@songfacts.comSongfacts Podcast Spotify Playlisthttps://open.spotify.com/playlist/3IThMW5yB8XnFh5cS2gTxR?si=KAhiqWRcSIy5uxb2sZPFTAThis show is part of Pantheon Podcasts.
