Have you recently started working for a company that requires you to create your own curriculum? If you have and you're having difficulty deciding what you should teach then this is the episode for you! Today we're going to do a little brainstorming session to help you pinpoint what type of class or classes you can offer. If you don't already know, Outschool gives teachers the freedom to offer whatever classes they want in their area of interest. Classes can be in traditional subjects like Math, Science, or English but they can also be more non-traditional such as baking, photography or how to start a YouTube channel. This is great for so many teachers because it gives you a ton of flexibility in what you can offer but it can be a little overwhelming if you're used to teaching someone else's curriculum. In this brainstorming session we're going to answer three questions to help you decide what to teach on Outschool (or a similar platform). The questions are:What do you love doing? What are you good at?What will parents pay for? I'm going to provide some examples of classes that do and do not fit into this framework with the ultimate goal of helping you decide what to teach. if you'd like to learn more about Outschool or if you'd like to create an account using my referral link, here it is: APPLY TO OUTSCHOOL:https://outschool.com/teach?signup=true&usid=pYl8KP6Q&utm_campaign=share_invite_link&teacherReferral=true Thanks for listening!

Sometimes we feel limited to only a few choices in life. We need to go to this school, get this degree, and take the best paying job we can find. Creating a life on your own terms seems far fetched. However, my friends... there ARE people out in the world who are able to use their gifts and talents in unconventional ways and live a life free and in control of their time. I was super honored to connect with Michael Venn, and incredible Youtuber, English teacher, juggler, actor, (etc., etc.) about how he has used platforms like YouTube to build a brand and business around the kind of life that he wanted to live. I have been following Michael for a couple of years now and it was so cool to hear in his own words how he has shaped his career, his best Youtube tips, and a word of encouragement to listeners that it is “never too late.” Topics Discussed: How he transitioned from “no one is watching these videos” to seeing traction. New Hampshire Unscripted talks with the performance arts movers and shakers
New Hampshire is home to an astounding group of incredibly talented and diverse individuals. And Michael Venn is certainly to be named among them. Quentin Tarantino is quoted as saying "I never went to film schools, I went to films." That quote describes the filmmaking journey Michael over the last 9 years. From NEVER having made a film or taken a single filmmaking class to creating an award winning film now seen around the world, his story arc is indeed impressive. In this episode, he sits with us and speaks about his beginnings 9yrs ago, the impact the New Hampshire Film Festival had on him and how he decided to just take the plunge and "just do it". He talks about the extreme importance of a good producer, the producers role in filmmaking and why a good producers "eye" is critical. We learn how his baptism by fire came when he ended up having to direct and edit his own film knowing that 900 people were going to pay to see the final product. No pressure there. He talks about what "happy accidents" are during the filming process, why comic books are storyboards just sitting there ready to be made into films and the thrill of how a local guy from Portsmouth, NH with no filmmaking background is showing others how it can be done.
Today's Guest: Michael Venn, Multi-passionate Entrepreneur Michael began his teaching career back in 2009 when he traveled to Italy to teach English as a second language. Since then he's been teaching off-and-on, sometimes as a teacher, sometimes not. Nowadays Michael splits his work time between teaching ESL Online, working as a touring puppeteer, hosting tours on Air BnB, and creating videos for YouTube. Summary Michael Venn isn't a teacher in the traditional sense, but he is one at heart. With his background in drama, he's been teaching people throughout his career and isn't slowing down anytime soon. He's had multiple side gigs, from teaching English oversees, to lemonade stand owner (this wasn't your neighborhood lemonade stand), to touring as a puppeteer, Michael has taken something from each of his experiences and learned how to spot opportunities many of us miss. Key Takeaways Opportunities are everywhere Look on the periphery of what everyone else is doing and find your own niche It's okay to let go of businesses for other, better possibilities The skills you learn in one venture will stay with you in everything else you do
