The city of Decatur, Alabama is home to many historic Black churches, including one with a particularly rich history: First Missionary Baptist Church, in Old Town, the city's predominantly Black neighborhood. Designed by one of the first African American architects, Wallace Rayfield, the church has — from its post-Civil War beginnings — been a cornerstone of Decatur's African American community. During the segregation era, it was particularly vibrant, hosting hundreds of congregants, including many teachers, and taking an active stance in the Civil Rights movement. However, de-segregation, and the decades of disinvestment that followed, have taken their toll on Decatur's Black neighborhood of Old Town — and First Mission Baptist is no exception. Today, this historic property is struggling to stay afloat. But its congregation, and dedicated leader, Pastor Daylan Woodall, see that the church matters today more than ever — and are determined to make sure this important piece of Decatur history has a future. This episode not only features the voices of Pastor Woodall and his congregants but also Ms. Frances Tate — of Celebrating Early Old Town with Art and the imminent Scottsboro Boys Museum — and relies on the historical research of Peggy Towns. This sermon was delivered by Pastor Ira J. Acree on August 2, 2020. Rev. Acree has served Greater St. John Bible Church, a thriving Missionary Baptist church in the Austin neighborhood, for the past 30 years. He reflects on the story of Esther of the Hebrew Scriptures and how people of faith are called "for such a time as this." The theme for August is what it means to be a people of possibility. To read about our theme-based ministry, please visit http://www.unitytemple.org/faith-development/soul-connections on our website. For the safety of all in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, UTUUC will NOT be holding in–person worship until further notice. We have also cancelled or postponed any congregational events that would have taken place. To see a video of this service, click HERE. Terry K. Anderson is the Senior Pastor of the Lilly Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Houston, where he has served for the past twenty-four years. I first heard Pastor Anderson preach many years ago. He led a revival at a church in Los Angeles. I was invited to attend, not knowing who the preacher was. Pastor Anderson preached a sermon that night I will never forget. In fact, if I was in a jam, I could preach that sermon on the spot today! I have followed Pastor Anderson’s ministry since that night Terry Anderson is a faithful preacher, a wise pastor, and a strong leader. Extreme Paranormal Radio..exclusively live on BTR. 8PM Thursdays. Tonight Stacey and Michelle welcome Tennessee Wraith Chaser's Scott Porter, of Ghost Asylum and Haunted Towns. In the summer of 1975 a hard headed, determined, analytical little boy was born to a deeply religious family in Gallatin, Tennessee. Molded by a strict Missionary Baptist mother and father who made certain that Scott would use his brain to make a living and not his back, this member of the team spent eight years of his life dedicated to higher education prior to entering the corporate world. Scott experienced an unexplainable event that occurred one morning as Scott awoke to the smell of breakfast filling his boyhood home. As Scott walked down the hall he noticed his mother wearing an unfamiliar pink robe while preparing breakfast at the stove. After a quick splash of water on his face in the hallway bathroom he started to the kitchen and quickly noticed that the smell of breakfast had vanished from the air and his mother was nowhere to be found. Once he thoroughly searched the house he picked up the phone and called his dad only to discover that both his mother and father had left the house much earlier that morning without ever having prepared breakfast. Scott now studies other strange occurrences like his and looks to historical record and The Bible for answers. He now hopes to help others that have had paranormal experiences by finding evidence that will substantiate what they have experienced, be it natural or supernatural. Scott brings an extremely analytical mind to the team and quite often plays the devil's advocate when studying evidence. His biggest fear is an altercation with a physically violent apparition or an entity that desires to do harm to him or others.
Pastor Terry K. Anderson, at Lilly Grove Missionary Baptist Church, we believe that God's mandate to make disciples is our greatest privilege and responsibility. We are therefore committed to fulfilling our purpose through worship, fellowship, ministry, outreach, and Christian education. Our goal is to evangelize the unsaved, foster spiritual maturity, and make every member a minister. It is our sincere desire that every member and guest receive the invitation to “Experience a Call to Joy.” A joy-filled life is made available to all who accept Christ into their lives and hearts. It is our Savior's intention that believers experience true joy despite their circumstances. Because the believer has the comfort of knowing Christ is always with them, joy is always available.

As the son of a Choctaw sharecropper in the early 1950s, Hubert Wesley had limited opportunities to further his education beyond the basics. In this episode, he recalls how a Missionary Baptist preacher, Willie Nix and his wife Ethel brought him from Mashulaville to Birmingham. The couple took him into their home and found him a job at a local service station. Her brother, Charles Wells, an accountant with Hayes Aircraft Company, began tutoring young Wesley and teaching him the skills required to land a good paying job. It was Wells’ determination to instill confidence in Wesley that led him to suggest they apply to be contestants on Strike it Rich, a controversial TV gameshow that pitted people with hard-luck stories against each other for the chance to win $500. Wesley describes their trip to New York City to compete on the gameshow in March of 1954. His story touched the nation and donations and job offers poured in, afterwards. Wesley accepted a job with Hayes Aircraft on Wells’ recommendation and details his career with the company until his retirement at the age of 55. His story is remarkable for the way people responded to his earnest efforts at self-improvement.
