The hosts break down the crucial distinctions between "Big T" and "little t" traumas, explaining how chronic stress can reshape the brain. If you have ever wondered why certain sounds, smells, or environments trigger an immediate survival response before your conscious mind can even register why, this episode provides a clinical framework, validation, and a powerful reminder that true healing is possible. Tune in to Discover: What Truly Qualifies as Trauma: The difference between single-incident ("Big T") trauma and the chronic, cumulative effect of smaller ("little t") traumas like emotional abuse or neglect. The Neurobiology of a Trigger: How the survival center of the brain processes threats a hundred times faster than the rational frontal lobe, leading to immediate physical activation. The Four Core Categories of PTSD Symptoms: A breakdown of intrusive symptoms (flashbacks and nightmares), avoidance, hyperarousal (heightened reactivity), and negative shifts in mood or thinking. The Goal of Trauma Therapy: How evidence-based treatments like EMDR, Prolonged Exposure, and Cognitive Processing Therapy help the brain transition memories so you can retell your story without physically reliving it. What is light? Not metaphorically. Not poetically. Actually. In this conversation with Suzanne Bates, we explore light as biology, energy, communication, healing, emotion, rhythm, consciousness, and connection. We talk about why morning sunlight changes the body, how the heart emits measurable energy, why coherence matters, how suffering shapes us, and why healing may begin with learning not to abandon ourselves. The more we talked, the more it felt like light is not just something we see — it may be the thing participating in everything. In the fire's heat The log is transformed but does Not become the fire What if the goal isn't to destroy the fire within us, but to learn how to live with it? This episode explores passion, shame, anger, desire, transformation, and the difference between purification and integration. Not becoming less. Not cutting parts of ourselves away. But learning how to carry what burns inside us without letting it consume us. Drawing from Nietzsche, Will and Ariel Durant, personal experience, and poetry, this episode reflects on the possibility that our virtues may grow out of the very things we once feared in ourselves. Send us Fan Mail“How to help my child heal from trauma?” “What are some trauma-informed parenting techniques?” “What are ways to help children cope with trauma?” — The toll that trauma takes on a child extends far beneath the surface. Trauma impacts perceived identity, self-worth, and hinders joy. Today, Benoit Harpey speaks with Tiffany Tyler, the founder of the Grace Epic Center. Tiffany experienced abuse as a child, and the silence around her trauma shaped her identity. She found healing through dance, faith, and expression, and now helps others overcome trauma in the same ways. Tiffany shares the effects of trauma, explains why behavior is often misunderstood, and gives practical advice for supporting healing. It takes consistency, validation, openness, encouragement, and expression. Tiffany shares incredible advice, gives us hope that trauma can be healed, and illustrates how we can help our children go from surviving to thriving.
There is a quote attributed to Nietzsche that reads: When we are tired, we are attacked by ideas we conquered long ago. I've found that to be true. When we're exhausted physically, emotionally, or psychologically, old fears return, clarity fades, and problems that are solvable can feel impossible. We forget who we are. We forget what we've survived. We forget that help exists. In this episode, I reflect on fatigue, overwhelm, and the temptation to surrender ourselves when life feels too heavy. Drawing from my own poems, Forgotten Walls and Terrible Potential, along with images from Théoden and Wormtongue in The Lord of the Rings, I explore what happens when the fog sets in—and how we begin to lift it. This is an episode about remembering who you are when you're tired, asking for help when you need it, and acting with integrity in the next honest hour. Why Things Fall Apart he tried and so did she but neither understood the other and that is how things fall apart despite the trying In this episode of The Poet (delayed), I reflect on why some relationships that feel meaningful, beautiful, and deeply connected still fail to hold over time. Using the metaphor of a beautiful building with a weak internal frame, I explore the difference between appearance and foundation—between chemistry and character, connection and structure. I talk about how trust, communication, comprehension, consideration, repair, and boundaries form the unseen architecture of healthy relationships. I also reflect on how many of us become “water”—adapting ourselves to unstable dynamics rather than building an internal structure of our own. More than an episode about romance, this is an honest reflection on friendships, family, self-respect, and the wisdom of learning what can truly hold. In week 2 of Name the Chain, Chrissy Cole speaks on trauma, emotional wounds, and the healing that Jesus offers. Through Scripture, personal testimony, and the story of the road to Emmaus, this message shows how honesty, truth, and the presence of Jesus can begin to heal what pain, disappointment, and unmet expectations have wounded. If you have been carrying hidden hurt, this sermon is a reminder that God is jealous for your healing and ready to restore your hope.Click here to view the episode transcript. Send us Fan Mail“Why does it feel like we aren't healing?” “What actually works for healing trauma?” “Is my child's trauma un-solvable?” — Two weeks ago, we heard Marcia Earhart's story through adoption, parenting, loss, and healing from trauma. Today, Benoit Harpey and Brooke Lowry dive deeper in their conversation with Marcia, a trauma coach and mother, as they discuss how to practically parent through trauma to foster healing. Parenting through trauma, grief, and behavioral challenges can feel overwhelming, stagnant, and like a lost cause, but Marcia explains why it isn't. Marcia expands on the truth of trauma being something that happened, not who a child is; highlights the importance of consistency and routine in a child's life; and explains the importance of the right support system (and where to find it). She tells us that we will feel tired, overwhelmed, and hopeless, but that progress will come—we just have to keep on moving. If you're stretched, discouraged, or unsure how to help your child heal from trauma, this episode is for you. Healing is still possible, no matter how hopeless it seems. Take the first step by tuning in today.
A Tree, a Star or a River: When Giving Becomes Loss What does it really mean to give? In this episode, I explore a question that has been quietly shaping my life: Where does our giving come from? Because not all giving is the same—and some forms of it come at a cost we don't see until it's too late. Drawing from my own writing—including On Becoming a Black Hole and On Being a River—I walk through three models of giving: • the tree, which gives until it disappears • the star, which shines while slowly burning itself out • and the river, which fills… and then overflows Along the way, I unpack a hard truth: you cannot continue to give what you don't replenish. There is always a reconciliation. This episode is about recognizing the difference between giving from fear and giving from fullness—and why only one of those is sustainable. If you've ever found yourself exhausted, overextended, or quietly losing yourself in the act of giving, this conversation is for you. Send us Fan MailWhat happens when an entire nation is traumatised? How does collective grief differ from personal loss, and what does healing actually look like at that scale? In this episode, I speak with Dr Imke Hansen, trauma therapist, scholar of Eastern European History, and Deputy Director of the human rights organisation Libereco – Partnership for Human Rights. In this episode of The Poet (delayed), I am joined by returning guest Josh Baron for a wide-ranging conversation on uncertainty, growth, and what it means to truly live inside the unknown. Drawing from the Tao Te Ching's line—“darkness within darkness, the gateway to all understanding”—we explore a central idea: uncertainty isn't something to escape, but something to enter. Together, we examine why we instinctively avoid uncertainty—fear, discomfort, and the pressure to “have it figured out”—and what happens when we resist that impulse and instead choose to stay. Through personal stories, philosophy, and lived experience, they uncover several key insights: • That uncertainty is not the exception, but the condition of being alive • That clarity is not forced, but revealed over time • That many of our reactions are not to reality itself, but to our interpretation of it under pressure • And that growth often requires moving through discomfort rather than around it The conversation moves fluidly through topics like faith, science, parenting, identity, integrity, and even music theory—illustrating how tension, dissonance, and uncertainty are not obstacles to understanding, but necessary parts of it. At its core, this episode is an invitation: to sit a little longer, to resist the urge to resolve too quickly, and to discover what becomes visible when we don't leave the doorway. I'd love to hear what you have to say about the episode including thoughts on the poetry and the topics that were discussed. You can email me at poetdelayed@gmail.com. This is Part 2 of my series We Die of Being Alive. In Part 1, I explored a difficult truth: we don't die because something goes wrong—we die because we are alive. Life includes uncertainty, loss, and things we cannot control. But that leaves a deeper question: How do we actually live inside that reality? In this episode, I explore what happens when fear takes over—when we panic, freeze, or react too quickly—and how, in those moments, we can lose something essential within ourselves. Through a personal story, reflections on thinkers like Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius, and ideas drawn from poetry and lived experience, this episode moves toward a simple but demanding principle: Stay in the doorway long enough… then move with integrity. This isn't about eliminating fear. It's about learning how to face it without abandoning yourself. I also share practical ways this shows up in daily life—how awareness, boundaries, and what I call “containers” can help reduce overwhelm and allow us to respond more clearly instead of reacting out of pressure. If Part 1 was about accepting reality, this episode is about how to move within it. I'd love to hear what you have to say about the episode including thoughts on the poetry and the topics that were discussed. You can email me at poetdelayed@gmail.com. Today, I interview Karen Rudolf who believed she wasn't enough and learned early on to stay quiet, especially after being told as a child to stop asking questions. That moment shaped how she saw herself. She became very quiet, carried that into her relationships, and continued to feel small and unheard into adulthood.Growing up, her curiosity was shut down, and with a mother who was also timid and a people pleaser, she learned not to speak up. She entered a relationship where her voice was again dismissed, reinforcing the belief that what she thought and felt did not matter.Everything began to shift when her life circumstances intensified. Going through a divorce while raising three daughters, facing health issues like hair loss and a pre-diabetes diagnosis, and even being told she might not walk again forced her to confront how she had been living. These moments pushed her to listen to herself and realize she could no longer stay silent. She began to speak up, ask for what she needed, and trust her intuition. Today, Karen uses her voice to help others uncover the root cause of their patterns and express who they truly are.__________________Karen Rudolf is the founder of Tranquil SOULutions™, where science meets soul to support high-performing, heart-led women and leaders shift out of survival mode and into grounded alignment. With a background in nursing and training in neuroscience-informed tools, somatic awareness, and trauma-release principles, she helps clients reconnect with their inner voice, regulate their nervous system, and lead from a place of embodied clarity.Karen is also the creator of the Tranquil SOULutions Mind Mosaic™ and The Butterfly Technique, practical and intuitive frameworks for decision-making and inner realignment. Most of us carry a quiet belief: if life feels hard, something must be wrong. In this episode, I challenge that idea. Drawing on a line from Michel de Montaigne—“You do not die of being sick, you die of being alive”—I explore what it really means to be alive, and why pain, loss, uncertainty, and struggle are not signs of failure, but expressions of life itself. But understanding that intellectually is one thing. Living it is another. When life becomes overwhelming, many of us respond in fear. We avoid. We run. We freeze. And in doing so, we don't just avoid pain—we begin to step out of our own lives. This episode is about that tension: • The difference between knowing that struggle is part of life… and actually facing it • Why avoidance feels natural—but costs us something deeper • And how, in trying to protect ourselves from pain, we can lose touch with our own lives This is Part 1 of a 2-part series. In the next episode, I'll explore what it looks like to stay, to move, and to live with integrity in the middle of it all. Have you ever found yourself caught in a whirlwind of infatuation, unable to discern between love and obsession? In this conversation, Dr. Alexandra and journalist and author Amanda McCracken discuss limerence, a state of being infatuated or obsessed with another person, typically characterized by a strong desire for reciprocation of one's feelings. Drawing from her compelling new book, When Longing Becomes Your Lover, Amanda shares her personal journey through the complexities of limerence, shedding light on how modern dating practices and social media amplify this intense emotional state. Beyond the macro/cultural factors, you will hear about the individual risk factors that can lead to patterns of limerence, such as painful early experiences and certain neuro-wirings/diagnoses, like ADHD and autism. You will also hear about how Amanda approached healing from her limerent patterns and opened herself up to a healthy, reciprocal intimate partnership.Resources worth mentioning from the episode:When Longing Becomes Your Lover: Breaking from Infatuation, Rejection, and Perfectionism to Find Authentic Love: A True Story of Overcoming Limerence by Amanda McCracken https://bookshop.org/p/books/when-longing-becomes-your-lover-breaking-from-infatuation-rejection-and-perfectionism-to-find-authentic-love-a-true-story-of-overcoming-limerence-a/ef0e30a5bd30e10b?aid=116429&ean=9781546008538&listref=2026-most-anticipated-memoirs-and-essay-collections&next=tLearn more about Amanda McCracken: https://www.amandajmccracken.com/Follow Amanda McCracken on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thelonginglabListen to The Longing Lab Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-longing-lab/id1606581375Dr. Tom Bellamy's Living With Limerence: https://livingwithlimerence.com/about/Reimagining Love episode Crushes, First Love, and Heartbreak: Supporting Teens Through Relationship Milestones with Lisa A. Dr. Warren explains neuroplasticity in plain language—neurons that fire together wire together—and how rumination keeps cortisol high, sleep poor, and pain persistent. You'll learn his “thought biopsy” method to test whether a thought is true before letting it run your day, plus how to move decisions from the amygdala's fight-or-flight to the frontal lobes where wisdom lives. We also dig into patterns behind migraines and avoidance loops, and how reframing, gratitude, and scripture-backed replacements can transform relationships—starting with a powerful marriage turnaround story. If you've felt stuck, spiritually numb, or trapped by old patterns, this conversation offers a practical, hopeful plan: notice, pause, and rewire with truth. Dr. Warren shares three steps you can start today to separate mind from brain, reclaim agency, and build healthier defaults that feel like peace. His new book, The Life-Changing Art of Self-Brain Surgery, lands on February 3 with tools, stories, and science to help you renew your mind and restore your life.If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs hope, and leave a quick review so more people can find these tools. In this prophetic warfare teaching, Kathy DeGraw releases fierce corporate prayer to uproot pharmacia influences, and heal every area of your body that has been weakened, stressed, or spiritually compromised. The enemy counts on passivity and delay, but healing manifests when we intentionally take authority and partner with the Holy Spirit. You will be guided to renounce toxins, command your DNA to realign to God's original design, and speak life over your immune system, hormones, neurological pathways, heart, lungs, blood, and every cell that has been affected by trauma or pandemic-related battles. Kathy also teaches how to co-labor with God in the natural—removing toxins, reducing inflammation, aligning your lifestyle with healing, and rejecting the enemy's access points. This is a call to rise up, claim your victory, and walk as a manifestation of divine health. Your healing is not optional; it is your inheritance in Christ, and this episode activates that truth with power. #deliveranceprayers #healing #pharmaciafreedom #dnarestoration #healingandwholeness **Connect with Us** - Website: https://www.kathydegrawministries.org/ - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kathydegraw/ - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kathydegraw/ Podcast - Subscribe to our YouTube channel and listen to Kathy's Podcast called Prophetic Spiritual Warfare, or on Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/show/3mYPPkP28xqcTzdeoucJZu or Apple podcasts at https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/prophetic-spiritual-warfare/id1474710499 **Recommended Resources:** - Receive a free prayer pdf on Warfare Prayer Declarations at https://kathydegrawministries.org/declarations-download - Kathy's training, mentoring and ecourses on Spiritual Warfare, Deliverance and the Prophetic: https://training.kathydegrawministries.org/ - Healed At Last ~ Overcome Sickness and Receive your Physical Healing: https://www.kathydegrawministries.org/healed-at-last/ - Mind Battles – Root Out Mental Triggers to Release Peace!: https://www.kathydegrawministries.org/product/mind-battles-pre-order-available-january-2023/ -Kathy has several books available on Amazon or kathydegrawministries.org **Support Kathy DeGraw Ministries:** - Give a one-time love offering or consider partnering with us for $15, $35, $75 or any amount! Healing alchemy: That load you struggle under— Is it lead or gold? It's an invitation to look at the weight we carry with different eyes—to see our struggles not as proof that we're failing, but as the raw material for something deeper, stronger, and more meaningful. I brought in a line from Epictetus that has been sitting with me lately, and we explore what it means to transform our suffering instead of being crushed by it. And as a way of saying thank you, I wrote this haiku in calligraphy, framed it, and I'm giving it away. Giveaway details: Email me at poetdelayed@gmail.com with “healing alchemy” in the subject line. Carrie and Michelle talk openly about how addiction, trauma, and unhealthy relationships often go hand in hand. They share lived experiences with abusive relationships, codependency, and emotional manipulation — and how recovery became the foundation for learning self-love, boundaries, and healthy connections. From leaving toxic partners to rebuilding trust in themselves, this episode explores what healing relationships actually look like in sobriety, why community matters, and how spaces like The Phoenix helped them rediscover who they are beyond addiction. ----Across the Web----
This DAV Podcast episode "It's Medicine, Not Dope" features a profoundly honest conversation with Gigi, a U.S. Army veteran who served for over 22 years, about her struggle with complex treatment-resistant PTSD, depression, and anxiety stemming from multiple sexual assaults both in and out of uniform, and the demanding work of body identification at the Dover Port Mortuary. Gigi recounts her long journey through anger and isolation, the shame she overcame to finally seek professional help, and her life-changing experience with ketamine-assisted therapy, which she describes as creating new, healthier "train tracks" in her brain. Her message emphasizes hope and resilience, especially for veterans from underrepresented populations who are often discouraged from seeking mental health care, reinforcing that the treatment is "medicine, not dope," and encouraging others to utilize available resources like DAV and VA.
Send us a text“My foster child's biological parents are incarcerated; how can I guide them through this difficult time?” “My child's guard is up after trauma, how can I help take the walls down?” “How can I help a child transition out of Department of Juvenile Justice custody?” — When a child is in DJJ custody, they're locked up, isolated, and scared. They aren't just going through legal trouble, they're carrying trauma and shame. It takes resilience, hope, support, and love to break free of the trauma they've faced. That's why today Sophia Mills sits down with William Freeman, Founder and CEO of People of Purpose, an organization seeking to guide families as their loved ones come home from incarceration. He shares his experience going through the same thing and how he healed; as well as tips and strategies to help your child through the transition back into normality. Whether you or your child are going through this, know someone who is, or are recovering from any kind of trauma, William's powerful testimony and advice can help you on your journey. As William told us, “Sometimes it's not the trauma you expect. It's abandonment, it's silence, it's love not shown the way a child needs to feel it.”
