Last year's game with UCLA followed a familiar trend for Oregon Football in the 2021 season. Though the game in LA against the Bruins featured a slow start, the Ducks built a 34-17 lead early in the fourth quarter only to eventually need a game-sealing interception against the Bruins' backup quarterback to walk away with a 34-31 victory. At Autzen Stadium in 2022, Oregon should be able to prevent the game from being such a nailbiter, even against a talented UCLA team. On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by the host of 'Locked On UCLA Bruins' Zach Anderson-Yoxsimer. Together they examine the October 22nd showdown between two schools who in 2021 had the Pac-12's only regular season appearance on College GameDay. After key offensive losses, the Bruins have reloaded with talent--Zach shares the names to watch for to compliment DTR and Zach Charbonnet. The question marks for UCLA going into 2022 come on the defensive side of the ball, and Bruins fans are hoping new DC Bill McGovern will make improvements in that realm. After losing their best pass rusher in Mitchell Agude, who has UCLA brought in to replace his production getting after the passer? Plus, Zach goes through members of the secondary who will need to make an impact for the Bruins to leave Eugene with a victory this year. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Rather than a traditional spring game, UCLA Football and HC Chip Kelly featured a "Spring Showcase" to give fans and media insight into the Bruins' current team. The biggest thing to standout on the offense so far has been the reliable duo of QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson (DTR) and RB Zach Charbonnet. The Bruins should once again lean on them to be productive in 2022 as the offense works in a lot of new faces in the pass-catching department. On today's episode of Locked On Pac-12, Spencer McLaughlin takes a look at UCLA's biggest headlines now that Spring football is winding down for the Bruins and HC Chip Kelly. With the departure of the team's top 2 receivers from last year to the NFL Draft (WR Kyle Phillips and TE Greg Dulcich), DTR might look to Duke transfer Jake Bobo as his top target. Chip Kelly has said he could be trending towards WR1 for the offense. Defensively, sophomore CB Devin Kirkwood is poised to take a leap in year 2 with UCLA, while North Texas transfers Gabriel and Grayson Murphy have helped fill the DE void left by Mitchell Agude. UCLA certainly has some decently high hopes after an 8-win 2021 campaign, but there are still questions that remain as they look ahead to the Fall. With a strong core in place, UCLA can certainly contend for the Pac-12 South title in 2022--but that will depend on their ability to fill some holes on the roster. The OL lost 3 starters from last year, and on that side of the ball Chip Kelly might need Kazmeir Allen to fill the production gap left by Kyle Phillips as a slot WR. Defensively, the Bruins made a much-needed change at defensive coordinator, and for UCLA to hit its ceiling, Bill McGovern will have to be at his best. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Miami Hurricanes have added yet another starting caliber defensive player to the football team through the transfer portal! Caleb Johnson, a former UCLA linebacker, has arrived at The U. He joins his former teammate Mitchell Agude, who arrived in Miami from UCLA earlier this year. The Johnson addition comes less than a week after Miami added DL Akheem Mesidor from West Virginia. Mario Cristobal and his staff have successfully overhauled their defense with experienced players from prominent programs. The linebacker unit especially needed this. Linebacker was arguably Miami's weakest unit before Johnson showed up. Meanwhile, unfortunate news came out over the weekend that Hurricanes true freshman linebacker Wesley Bissainthe was a passenger in a serious car crash. The extent of his injuries are unknown but not expected to be career threatening. We'll find out later on how much if any time he will miss in 2022. Miami also pulled out a huge transfer portal addition for the basketball team with guard Nijel Pack coming over from Kansas State. Pack is making major headlines based on the NIL deal he is receiving from Life Wallet. He's reportedly receiving $800,000 over two years plus a car. This has caused journalists and rival fans to become incredibly salty about Miami's NIL success with Life Wallet and the Ruiz family. Host Alex Donno discusses Miami's revolutionary NIL funds from Life Wallet, where the money is coming from, and why people outside of Coral Gables are getting so upset. Alex Donno breaks down a key update in the transfer portal with FCS all American pass rusher Dj Coleman visiting Miami. The Canes have recently added Mitchell Agude from UCLA, so could Coleman be next in line? Donno discusses reports of head coach Mario Cristobal stopping practices to chew his players out for not creating the sort of tempo and intensity needed to run practice. This is the type of old school discipline these players have needed. Donno takes a walk down memory lane with former University of Miami offensive tackle Rashad Butler, who played on the championship winning Canes team in 2001 before the Fiesta Bowl heartbreak of 2002. Rashad explains the constant competition and the amazing culture created by so many NFL caliber players.. He blocked for running backs like Willis McGahee and Frank Gore while protecting quarterbacks Ken Dorsey and Brock Berlin. Butler explains just how possible it is for improved coaching to fix a pedestrian offensive line. Is Miami's current line good enough to soak in the improvements from Mirabal and Cristobal? After spring break and final exams, Oregon Football has resumed spring practice. In the new semester, 7 new players have arrived to begin practicing with the Ducks including 5 freshmen and 2 transfers. Among the 7 newcomers at practice is the WR transfer Chase Cota, playing for the same school his dad did back in the day. JJ Greenfield has also returned to the practice field, a welcome surprise for a guy who wasn't with the team last year after showing glimpses in the 2020 season.Other well-known freshmen from the Class of 2022 now practicing with the Ducks include Jahlil Florence, linebackers Devon Jackson and Harrison Taggart, among others. Oregon has "missed" on its last couple of recruits in the news, with Nico Iamaleava going to Tennessee and Mitchell Agude choosing to play for Miami in 2022. This should not worry Duck fans at all, and they should expect Dan Lanning and this staff to be able to recruit at a high level going forward.Oregon Basketball has a 5-star center in the Class of 2022 by the name of Kel'el Ware. Oregon Football missed out on former UCLA defensive end Mitchell Agude despite making it into his top three final schools. With just 2 players on the roster listed as defensive ends or edge players (with 1 incoming freshman, Anthony Jones), the Ducks need help on the edge to get after the passer. Maryland DE Demeioun Robinson would be a welcome addition to the roster for Dan Lanning's defense.Robinson, a highly-rated 4-star recruit, spent his freshman season at Maryland but has entered his name into the transfer portal. Oregon should be looking at Robinson closely and making an offer. A top-50 recruit in the country who is 6'4" and 250lbs has the potential to make an impact for the Ducks in 2022 if the staff could convince him to come across the country to Eugene. But that could prove to be a challenging task since other Big 10 schools were interested in him coming out of high school as well.Oregon Men's Basketball is waiting on players' decisions to find out how many guys will be back from this year's team. According to a report from The Oregonian, Eric Williams Jr. will not be returning to the Ducks. A prominent role player from a season ago, how can Oregon work to replace Williams, and why is he the sort of player Dana Altman should continue to seek out? Oregon Football is still capable of bringing in high-caliber players for the Class of 2023 despite not having a high-end QB commit to anchor the class. Spencer is joined by Rian Winter (@SportsChat503) to get his thoughts on the latest news from Oregon Football and Ducks Basketball. He thinks the $8-million NIL deal that appears to have flipped him is a bit extreme for a guy who's currently a junior in high school. They move on to talking about the defensive side of the ball for Oregon in 2022, and the potentially glaring weakness for the Ducks at the defensive end position. Without UCLA transfer Mitchell Agude, some guys who Duck fans have heard from sparingly like Keyon Ware-Hudson might have to step up. Could Brandon Dorlus, one of the highest-graded interior DL in the conference from a season ago, potentially switch to play on the edge in the absence of Kayvon Thibodeaux on the defensive front? Closing out the show Rian shares his thoughts on Oregon Basketball, specifically how the Men's and Women's teams ended the year. Though disappointing overall, the Ducks are more than likely going to be fine and continue to be winning programs on a national level. A bounceback campaign is certainly in the cards for the men, with potential returners like Franck Kepnang poised to take a big leap. Dana Altman's team also has some talented freshmen incoming for the Class of 2022, meanwhile Kelly Graves will have a very different looking team next season with departures from Nyara Sabally, Kylee Watson, and Maddie Scherr. Oregon Football was in the final 3 schools for former UCLA defensive end Mitchell Agude, arguably the Bruins' best pass rusher from a season ago. He instead chose to go join former Oregon HC Mario Cristobal and play for the Miami Hurricanes for his final year of college football This leaves Oregon with a shockingly-low number of defensive ends, and puts a lot of pressure on the interior defensive linemen to get after the passer. Looking to the portal once again to find an edge rusher would be a good idea for Dan Lanning. Oregon Men's Basketball missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2017-18 season.
