Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise reacts to the day in Pittsburgh sports news live around 5 p.m. Eastern. Should GM Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin consider dealing star pass rusher T.J. Watt following the George Pickens trade to the Dallas Cowboys? Does it make sense to continue bolstering their NFL draft capital with an eye toward selecting from the loaded 2026 QB class that includes Arch Manning, Drew Allar, Nico Iamaleava and LaNorris Sellers? Or is Watt still worth extending into his 30s as a leader of a team that hopes to be competing for playoff wins? Paul tackles those topics, then weighs in on the Pirates after they announced Thursday that they'd fired manager Derek Shelton and replaced him with bench coach Don Kelly.
Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey joins host Adam Bittner to react to a busy week of Pittsburgh sports news. Are GM Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin signaling an intention to punt on the 2025 season after trading George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys? And allowing names like Najee Harris, Russell Wilson and Justin Fields to leave via NFL free agency in exchange for compensatory picks for the 2026 NFL draft? Or are they still serious about winning if they're keeping T.J. Watt in Pittsburgh and pursuing QB Aaron Rodgers on the open market? And how smart would it be to position for 2026 and its loaded QB class that includes names like Arch Manning, Drew Allar, Nico Iamaleava and LaNorris Sellers? Our duo tackles those questions, then talks Penguins and Penn State football. Should GM Kyle Dubas regret the team's winning ways to end the season? Which resulted in the 11th overall pick in the upcoming NHL draft? Who are the candidates Jason is mostly looking toward to replace Mike Sullivan as coach? And did Nittany Lions coach James Franklin accomplish what he needed to in the transfer portal this offseason? Adding names like Syracuse WR Trebor Pena and North Carolina linebacker Amare Campbell to a team that hopes to compete for a College Football Playoff national title?
Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise reacts to the day in Pittsburgh sports news live around 5 p.m. Eastern, primarily the Steelers' decision to trade George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a third-round pick in next year's NFL draft. How does this move fit into a confusing offseason so far, one that's included big additions in DK Metcalf, Kenneth Gainwell and Darius Slay Jr; big subtractions in the form of Najee Harris, Russell Wilson and Justin Fields; plus a protracted pursuit of quarterback Aaron Rodgers? Are general manager Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin serious about competing this year? Or are they looking toward the 2026 NFL draft, in which they now have a basket of picks to pursue a quarterback like Arch Manning, Drew Allar, Nico Iamaleava and LaNorris Sellers? Paul tackles those questions and more on the football front, then talks Pirates and manager Derek Shelton's future after another series loss vs. the St. Louis Cardinals.
On the Wednesday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates, Post-Gazette Steelers insiders Christopher Carter and Ray Fittipaldo react to the team's decision to trade WR George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys. Why would GM Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin make this move now? After the NFL draft? If they thought they might trade Pickens, why didn't they draft a starter-quality receiver to pair with DK Metcalf? Could the team still sign a free agent like Keenan Allen or Amari Cooper? And could internal options like Calvin Austin III, Robert Woods and Roman Wilson step up? Our duo tackles those questions and more beyond the receivers room. How might the deal impact the team's pursuit of Aaron Rodgers in NFL free agency? And is the team clearly signaling an interest in acquiring a QB in the deep 2026 draft, the could include names such as Arch Manning, Drew Allar, Nico Iamaleava and LaNorris Sellers?
While there's not a ton happening with Ohio State football right now, there's a lot to look forward to over the next eight months.Right now, the most anticipated event of the summer for Buckeye fans might be Michigan's Committee on Infractions hearing that's set to take place in one month as the Wolverines could finally face punishment from the NCAA this summer for their impermissible scouting scheme orchestrated by former staffer Connor Stalions. The height of recruiting season will also come soon as Ohio State prepares to host official visitors and camps in June, while we're personally excited to make our way to Las Vegas in July for Big Ten Media Days, the unofficial kickoff to football season.Ohio State's season opener could be its most highly anticipated season opener ever as the Buckeyes host Texas in a Cotton Bowl rematch that could be a 1 vs. 2 game. Ohio State's Nov. 1 home game against Penn State will be one of its most-anticipated games against the Nittany Lions ever as the Buckeyes look to spoil Jim Knowles' return to Columbus. And of course, everyone in Columbus has Ohio State's Nov. 29 trip to Ann Arbor circled on the calendar with hopes that Ryan Day's Buckeyes will finally end their drought against Michigan.Add in road trips to Washington, Illinois and Wisconsin and Nico Iamaleava's return to Columbus with UCLA, and the Buckeyes' regular-season schedule is loaded with games we can't wait for. As fun as the first year of the 12-team College Football Playoff was, we're also excited for year two of the expanded playoff race.Of course, we'll be excited to watch Jeremiah Smith and Caleb Downs play every game as the Buckeyes' superstars have the potential to be even better than they were last year. And there's no shortage of players with the talent to emerge as stars around them, such as Max Klare, James Peoples and Jermaine Mathews Jr., just to name a few. With Ohio State in the quietest part of its offseason and us preparing to take an early summer break on Real Pod Wednesdays, we highlight all the biggest things for Buckeye fans to look forward to this season. The full rundown:0:00 Why There Won't Be Real Pod Wednesdays for the Next Few Weeks4:52 Anticipation Builds for Potential Michigan Punishment12:53 Big Summer Ahead for Ohio State Recruiting18:45 Big Ten Media Days in Vegas Will Be Fun21:46 Season Openers Don't Get Any Bigger Than Ohio State vs. Texas26:28 Jim Knowles' Return Makes Ohio State vs. Penn State Extra Spicy32:00 Beating Michigan Still the Big Hurdle Ryan Day Must Clear38:07 Illibuck Game in Champaign, Trip to Camp Randall Among Other Exciting Matchups43:35 Why Jeremiah Smith and Caleb Downs Should Be Even Better in 202548:11 Buckeyes Will Have Potential Breakout Stars All Over the Field

Could that AD be North Carolina's Bubba Cunningham, who didn't lead the charge to hire Bill Belichick and who probably isn't keen on dealing with the Belichick situation now? Andy and Ari discuss some of the wild details of why Alan Haller's tenure fell apart in East Lansing. Later, Nick Roush of Kentucky Sports Radio joins to talk Kentucky Derby. Nick offers tips on who to bet in the Derby and in the undercard races on Saturday. Nick also breaks down Kentucky football in 2025. Will the Wildcats get back to the style of play that made them consistent winners under Mark Stoops? Also, Nick is waiting for the apologies from Tennessee fans who got mad when he called Nico Iamaleava an “$8 million volleyball player” last fall. Want to watch the show instead? Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey joins host Adam Bittner to react to a busy week in Pittsburgh sports news. How much pressure is on Steelers coach Mike Tomlin following the firing of the Penguins' Mike Sullivan? Will he face expectations to win in 2025, after GM Omar Khan decided to keep names like George Pickens and T.J. Watt rather than trade them for future draft capital? And amid the likely signing of veteran Aaron Rodgers? Or will get get a chance to coach the team in 2026, when it holds 10 draft picks and may be able to seek its QB of the future, with names like Arch Manning, Drew Allar, LaNorris Sellers and Nico Iamaleava likely coming out of the college ranks? Later, the guys tackle the Penguins' new direction without Sullivan. What changed for GM Kyle Dubas between last year and this year, given the reality that expectations for 2024-25 were low? Could a new coach jolt the team like Dan Bylsma did in 2009 or Sullivan did in 2016 to spark Stanley Cup runs from Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang? How much runway does Kyle Dubas have to turn the Penguins into contenders? And is the perception of Sidney Crosby's involvement in front office moves fit reality? Then in the third segment, airing on the PG's Pirates YouTube channel, our duo analyzes the continued lack of results in the win-loss column despite some improvement offensively. Is this just a bad team, even if it continues to show some improvement? What does that mean for GM Ben Cherington and manager Derek Shelton in owner Bob Nutting's eyes? Is Enmanuel Valdez a useful player? Or only looking good by comparison? And how will things shake out in the rotation with Bubba Chandler becoming hard to deny in the minors, Jared Jones on the mend and Carmen Mlodzinski still struggling after the first time through opposing batting orders? Nico Iamaleava isn't a symptom of a "broken system", he exemplifies the system, nothing is broken. For years fans and labor labor advocates have called for college players to be able to earn money, but now that they are earning through NIL, in a union, free market environment--some don't like the neoliberalization of college sports..wonder why? Recorded: April 9th, 2025 This week, Will Compton and Taylor Lewan travel to Eugene, Oregon, to sit down with Dan Lanning. The Oregon Ducks head coach invited The Boys on campus for an all-time look inside his program and delivered an absolutely epic interview. Will and Taylor start the pod off with an intro reacting to Michael Chandler’s loss to Paddy “The Baddy” Pimblett at UFC 314, Rory McIlroy’s victory at The Masters, and Nico Iamaleava transferring from Tennessee. Then we kick it over to Dan Lanning. Coach Lanning talks about everything—from bringing elite talent to Eugene and building a winning culture with NIL, to his mindset heading into the Ohio State game, and the Ducks’ College Football Playoff preparation. He dives into his coaching journey, how he teaches players to manage money, and even shares his biggest personal splurge (spoiler: it’s got four wheels). The Boys touch on trash talk, freshmen joining Oregon’s roster mid-year, and what it’s like competing in the Big Ten. Dan opens up about balancing football with family life, his favorite movies and games, and who he’d spend a day with outside of football. Plus, he reveals whether the NFL is in his future and throws down on some iconic Bussin’ segments like Bet The Bus and Ro Spicy. One of the most well-rounded, insightful, and straight-up fun convos we’ve had with a head coach—don’t miss it. Make sure to like, subscribe, and—as always—BIG HUGS and TEENY TINY KISSES! Today's word of the day is ‘bags' as in under the eyes as in money bags as in the East Coasters trying to watch the NL West. It is a gauntlet. 4 teams are over .500 right now. The Padres haven't lost at home. The Dodgers are losing games. The Giants are surprising. The Diamondbacks are hot. The Rockies are… existing. (8:40) The Chicago Cubs got some bad, bad news. Justin Steele is done for the season. Counsell thought it was short-term and it's not. Now what do the Cubs do? (14:05) Mike Trout got into a little situation with a fan on a play for a fly ball right on the edge of the stands. Interference or not? Doesn't matter because Trout made the best of it and acknowledge he didn't know the rules and then met with the fan after the game! (18:45) What just went down between Tennessee and Nico Iamaleava is exactly what the NCAA has created. A world of a mess. A QB wants more money. The school says no. And now he's out of a job (?) and Tennessee is out of a QB. (35:50) Review: Novocaine. (38:30) Rory McIlroy finally got his green jacket. Almost was the same story as always with him, but he did it. (43:41) The NBA Play-in and Playoffs are here! A wild Sunday saw a bunch of teams change positions. The Warriors down to the play-in. Western Conference was wild. (50:00) NPPOD. Welcome back to this "Fearless" Monday! Stephen A. Smith goes on ABC and starts flaunting his presidential run. Whitlock must have had a crystal ball, since his prediction of SAS becoming a puppet for the Democratic Party has come to fruition. Unfortunately, no one could predict what Stephen A. would run on. His message of standing out from the rest of the candidates is that he isn't Trump. The next presidential election is almost four years away, so anything can happen. However, the American people have proven that they could be duped into thinking Joe Biden was physically fit to be our president … could they be duped again? SAS has the backing of Bob Iger and Disney; we better start taking his presidential aspirations seriously, or we will have another Joe Biden in the White House. In sports news, Steve Kim and Jason discuss the talented Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava reportedly wanting out of Knoxville and the University of Tennessee. There have been some NIL disputes between Iamaleava and UT's quarterbacks coach. Nico then proceeded to skip spring practice and ultimately leave the school. This is what the unregulated NIL has created in college sports: entitled professional athletes who lack the loyalty and perseverance needed for success. These players know that some other school will offer them lucrative NIL contracts if they have an issue with their previous school. What kind of precedent are we setting for these kids? Finally, wrapping up the show, Steve and Jason discuss the tragic suicide of standout LSU football player Kyren Lacy. Lacy was preparing to be drafted in the first or second round of the 2025 NFL draft class. Praying for peace for the family of a child gone too soon.
