In this edition of the BROCast, Dave goes solo once again to discuss the UCLA football roster update, the basketball recruiting events this week, and the 30 most important Bruins countdown. Starting with the roster update, I went through some of the notables from the roster, including some speculation about what it might mean for certain receivers, defensive backs, offensive linemen, and defensive linemen. Also, just generally: these heights/weights actually look pretty accurate based on our eye test, unlike some thing from previous eras. Next, I talked about the NBPA Top 100 camp and the Section 7 high school event this weekend, and some of the notable names that UCLA will be watching at each event. I also talked about how to balance high school recruiting and transfer recruiting with Mick Cronin in basically constant win now mode. Finally, I touched on the beginning of our 30 most important Bruins countdown, and discussed the lack of complete consensus on a lot of the list between our votes. Bruin Report Online is now at On3! In this edition of the BROCast Mailbag, Dave goes deep, answering all your questions about Tounde Yessoufou, the basketball program, and where things go from here, with some occasional palate-cleansing football and Star Wars questions. I answered all your questions to the best of my ability about Tounde Yessoufou, what went wrong for UCLA in the recruitment, why the Bruins were unable to close on their priority targets in the portal, how all of that portends for this season, what it means for Mick Cronin's job status, and every single permutation of those situations that you all, exhaustively, asked about. I also answered questions about football recruiting, the offense, Nico Iamaleava, Bob Chesney at UCLA, which were all a nice palate cleanser after discussing basketball for an absurd amount of time. This thing ran two hours, but I somehow found time for a 10-minute soliloquy about Star Wars content and why more things in that universe should be made by people who have apathy or disdain for Star Wars, and fewer things made by fanboys. You can listen to the whole thing here. If anything doesn't make sense, blame my brain liquefying at the 45 minute mark. Bruin Report Online is now at On3! Malachi Moreno returns to the fold; the baseball Wildcats are dancing; (7:00) incredible finish to the Indy 500 yet some fans are complaining about the TV PBP announcer; (19:00) Jack Givens of the UK Sports Network on Malachi's return; (39:00) UCLA's Mick Cronin says coaches today have to re-set their respective missions; (49:00) more with Nick Mingione and the baseball Cats on their NCAA tournament draw; (58:00) UK baseball radio voice Darren Headrick and what better time to find out, Who's On First?
Things Discussed: Best Michigan team ever? Seth: This team would destroy any previous Michigan team. The game gets better, the training gets better, the strategy gets better. They played together like they were together four years. Championships are not easy. This team vs Fab Five: Fabs had to score at the rim, and you can't do that against this team. 1989 team? The way Rice was shooting they could beat anybody, and they had more shooting. 2013 team? They were so good offensively but they'd need a ridiculous shooting day from the backcourt. Remember they didn't let Terry shoot threes, but perhaps he developed that in the NBA. The refs hated the Fabs so much more than this team too, and they didn't really have a developed post game until Juwan was a junior. But imagine if you could put college C-Webb on a modern team, making him a switchable five? Oh man he'd be so good now. This is the next evolution of hoops: consistent twos are better than threes, because threes will die on you. Hunter S. Thompson: Sports journalist. LoyĀ = Morez? No. Program golden age? They're going to continue to be very good, but this year will be among the best. It took a lot of luck to have a guy like Mara going unused by Mick Cronin and have a guy like Yaxel who's the best player of last year who wasn't in the NBA this year. It gets harder to rebuild this team, because even Izzo is in the portal for rim protectors. The market at the rim has gone way up after they saw this team. JP Estrella will help them on ORebs: he was one of the best on that team of bears. Break: Our what-might-have-been team: Sam's is Kelly Baraka, Seth's is Antonio Bass as Rich Rod's 2008 QB. Football: Hiter hype is off the charts. Sam thinks he's going to be an amazing zone runner. Reliving Najee Harris: there were two flights; he was sitting next to Tua Tagovailoa on the other one, so you can't criticize him too much. Sounds like a really good OL: Sam takes his Frazier victory lap. Gwar and Sprague and Norton, LG is Link, Efobi or Gach. How much will they run the QB? 1) They flipped an Illinois commit, and 2) Whittingham's an Urban Meyer assistant.
Two coaches. Two losses. Two press conferences.Ā Same signal.Ā Villanova's Kevin Willard threatened to fire his staff on live television, doubled down in the post-game press conference, then called it a joke when the backlash hit. UCLA's Mick Cronin dismissed a reporter's question, called it the worst he'd ever been asked, then accused him of raising his voice ā on camera ā in front of a room full of people. Neither apologized. Both made the questioner the problem. That's not frustration. That's contempt. Here's what these press conferences actually reveal: crises don't start with headlines. They start with tone, word choice, and the instinct that kicks in before you've had time to think. Reputations don't collapse overnight. They erode slowly, one moment of contempt at a time.Want More Behind the Breakdown? In this edition of the BROCast, Dave and Tracy talk about the UCLA basketball teams entering the NCAA Tournament. First, the guys break down the men's basketball game between UCLA and UCF on Friday at 4:25 p.m. The big question for the Bruins surrounds the health of Tyler Bilodeau. If he and Donovan Dent are healthy, UCF doesn't present as a terrible matchup. Then, they discuss the women's game, and how it looks likely that the Bruins should be able to blow through the weekend (Cal Baptist and then the winner of Oklahoma State/Princeton) without too much trouble, setting up for the first real game likely in the Sweet 16 or Elite 8. Finally, they close with a discussion of Mick Cronin and five-star high school recruiting. They discuss the way Cronin ideally builds a program, and whether he can successfully evaluate four-star level high school players and then develop them here in the Transfer Portal era. Things Discussed: Seth on early: Ohio State has yet another former player admitting he didn't go to class. Mick Cronin doesn't record practicesāhe's Tom Izzo without being a good basketball coach. Seth gives a history of coaching styles, short version is the Bo/Woody/Izzo/Bear style of drill sergeant was just a post-WW2 thing that just worked in that era. Michigan tampered with [the locks that Mick Cronin puts on the dungeon] UCLA, and Xavier Booker sneaks in while it's open: ooh, more yelling! Purdue: Mackey was lit, 42-17 run after going down five early. Michigan took only one bad three; everything else was open. Purdue was the opposite, all movement. Not thruck. Matt Painter is the anti-Cronin. Explained the game so well: he helped every dive inside and forced M to hit open kickouts. Soon as they did there's nothing more to do If Mara is going to play like he did in the 1st half and Cadeau plays like he did in the 2nd half...yeesh. How would you attack Michigan? Start by pulling Mara out of the middle by going five-out, then survive their size on offense (e.g. Illinois). Duke Preview: Boozer is a suped up Yax, they have incredible length on the perimeter including a 6'8"/190 Italian they put on PGs so we're going to see if Michigan can keep up their scoring or turns it over a ton. Duke's weaknesses are you can get to the rim and get fouls on their young frontcourt, since they don't really have a backup five. Cason: best backup PG in the league? Not sure but turning a corner. Still misses a switch and doesn't have NBA spacial awareness, but he's a very valuable backup now.
Mike Golic joins the show to talk about his love for the winter olympics and how he and Stugotz would do in a two man luge. They spent the second hour discussing which countries they root against most in the Olympics before asking a Lions-related question in the third hour. Then, the guys wrapped the show with their biggest pet peeves in sports.

Rich and the guys weigh in on fiery UCLA Head Basketball Coach Mick Cronin ejecting his own player, Steven Jamerson, during a game after the center committed a (borderline hard but not dirty) foul on a Michigan State player, followed by the coach going off on a reporter who asked a seemingly legit question during his postgame media session. Former All-Pro LB Luke Kuechly tells Rich what it means to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, discusses the Carolina Panthers' big turnaround last season going from worst to first in the NFC South, and weighs in on Sam Darnold's inspiring redemption story that culminated in a Super Bowl win for the Seattle Seahawks QB.
