Orange County Register Beat Writer UCLA Football Beat Writer joins us to talk about the Holiday Bowl, Chip Kelly, Martin Jarmond and how many UCLA football athletes were recognized for their brilliant play. We talk to the Bruins fans doubters, and relate what they feel success is to someone trying to go on a diet and lose weight. They work out the whole season and scale doesn't show them the results they want, but they ignore all the other parts of their health that got better. UCLA's record is the scale and that is all Bruins fans look at, they don't look at the whole picture. They might find some brightness in our future.Hope you enjoy. Orange Country Register UCLA football beat writer James Williams had a lot on his plate this week. Starting with the Transfer Portal, as six Bruins entered it. James looks at how bad of losses UCLA had leaving, and who they might get in the transfer portal. We look at Lincoln Riley getting hired at USC and what does that mean at UCLA and Chip Kelly. We try and guess where the Bruins will be going bowling and who they will be playing. We also look at the job DTR has done in the last three games and how he deserved to be praised and appreciated for his strong play these last few weeks, but people are still hating. When did Bruins fans become haters. And we answer all of your questions we received on Twitter. It is a jam packed show. Hope you enjoy. Orange Country Register UCLA football beat writer James Williams talks about DTR signature performance, while Jorge Medina wonders if it came too late. We talk about Chip Kelly's future and if he deserves all this criticism still. He is winning to end the season. And has a chance to go 9-4 wit a bowl victory. And how the basketball program is put on a pedestal and can do nothing wrong, while the football team can do nothing right.Follow us on twitter at Jorge Medina @funkycoalmedinaJames Wiliams @JHWReporterSomething's Bruin Podcast @SomethingsBruin

Orange County Register UCLA Football Beat Reporter James Williams talks about Chip Kelly's future and Dorian Thompson Robinson's future heading into the bye week. We usually break down in minutes what we talk about but this is one of those podcasts where we hit every subject quick and mostly talk about what everybody wants Chip Kelly's Defensive Coordinator Jerry A. fired. We also talk about future QB Justyn Martin from Inglewood who threw 13 TDS in a high school game after committing to UCLA.If you want to know what UCLA is doing this bye week please listen to this podcast, you will get informed. If you are frustrated with UCLA, we share it, and talk about why you shouldn't be as frustrated. And as a fan of UCLA football Jorge Medina doesn't think we should put them on the same level as Alabama, because after next Friday when UCLA basketball plays Villanova, win or lose, will anyone care about UCLA football other than the USC game. And that is why the basketball program is the one who traditionally should be treated like we are treating the football team right now. If UCLA wins the next three games they will be 8-4. That is good enough for this program right now. Follow us on twitter at Jorge Medina @funkycoalmedinaJames Wiliams @JHWReporterSomething's Bruin Podcast @SomethingsBruin
Orange County Register UCLA football beat reporter James Williams talks about the frustrations in the Oregon game and previews the Utah game coming up. We talk miss field goals and DTR. (0:00-2:06) Jorge Medina and James Williams talk about UCLA fans giving up on their team heading for the exits after the third quarter. They were looking like Dodgers fans in the playoffs. We ask why are they giving up on their team. Are there expectations too high. (2:07=6:07) Did the Nick Barr Mirra field goal that was called a miss on the field, actually go through the uprights. And why wasn't there a replay. After watching it live, Medina thought it was in. And also was asking what the heck just happened. (6:08-9:50) UCLA came out like gang busters against Oregon. Medina was feeling confident that they Bruins came out with a winning mentality at home like they do on the road, and still can't figure out what happened to them. Travis Dye scored 4 TDS on only 37 yards. What kind of stat is that. And if not only for an Anthony Brown long run, they would have held Oregon under 100 yards rushing.(9:51-11:45) Lake couldn't find the line of scrimmage which hurt the Bruins chances of keeping that big lead and winning the game. It was a tough game for him. (11:45-13:33) Oregon's Kayvon Thibodeaux changed everything about that game and proved why he one of the most feared defensive monsters in the game. He is a Game Changer. Noah Sewell also wreaked havoc on the Bruins offense.(13:34-17:28) Dorian Thompson Robinson's health status going into the Utah game. He missed practice on Monday. He showed up but did not throw a ball. James Williams has him as questionable, but thinks he is going to play. He showed up at No.1 on the QB depth chart for the week.(17:29-21:20) The fourth quarter was one of the weirdest of the season. Mark Cristobal had berated the refs to not call things in the second half. UCLA put together one of the best drives of the seasons without any help from the Ref's.(21:21-24:23) Why are they so night and day at home and on the road. That could be the story of there season. (24:24-29:21) Does UCLA still have a shot at the PAC12 South Title. Both Williams and Medina think yes, but the key is that they need to beat Utah this week for it to happen. Both Utah and Arizona state have loseable games going into the final stretch And if UCLA can stay with league losses, they are still in it.(29:22-31:06) What it is going to take to beat Utah this week. Can they stop the run of the Ute's. Will their QB destroy our secondary that seems to play better on the road.(31:08-33:20) UCLA stopped running the ball against Oregon after they went up big. They need Zach Charbonet and Brittain Brown (33:21-40:00) This loss to Oregon has deflated all it's fan base. This team is just so frustrating to follow and cheer for. It is not like Oregon dominated and beat the Bruins. In some ways they just beat themselves again. The team tweets out support for their teammates and coach(40:01-47:22) Predictions for the Utah game.Follow us on twitter at Jorge Medina @funkycoalmedinaJames Wiliams @JHWReporterSomething's Bruin Podcast @SomethingsBruin
Orange County Register UCLA football beat reporter James Williams gets UCLA fans prepared for the big game against the 10th ranked Oregon Ducks. He gets you inside the locker room to get the feel of the team. (0:00-8:24 ) Jorge Medina gloats for speaking it to existence and thanks James Williams for announcing the news that for the first 23 years to the day almost ESPN GameDay is coming to Westwood for the weekend. Is it good for the school that GameDay will be at Westwood or at the Rose Bowl. We feel that having it in Westwood will allow UCLA to use this as their recruiting message and give recruits a chance to see what UCLA is all about. You might not have Oregon fans show up, so its smart having it on campus.(8:25-11:41) UCLA has turned things around after two impress road victories can the Bruins win at home? And should have turned fans sour tastes in the team. We see this as redemption. The LSU game all over again, a chance to show the nation who this team is and what it can do. UCLA has a second chance to show the country that they are a great football team. (11:42-13:25) Should have UCLA been ranked after their victory against Washington and how important are rankings this late in the season when you are just trying to win your conference. If they beat Oregon they will be ranked.(13:26-17:45) The Defense is kind of Jeckyl and Hyde at home and on the road. And they have to make a statement at home, after an impressive showing in big moments against Washington. James Williams feel the defense is getting healthy and getting stronger.(17:46-24:14) Guys that worry Medina and Williams on the Oregon offense that could make it tough on the UCLA defense. QB Anthony Brown and RB Travis Dye, Brown and Dye had big games in their last few games. Dye had 145 yards rushing.(24:15-39:35) How much is the PAC12 disrespected. The rankings show it. Oregon gets disrespected and drops in the rankings, and Ohio State who they beat jumps five spots ahead of them, Oregon beat the Buckeyes with out their best defensive players and Ohio State beats nobodies, and they are now better. Utah beats ASU and still not ranked. The problem is UCLA fans see progress through rankings. And they see the progress of this team, because they are not ranked as high as the no.2 Men's Basketball team, but at 5-2 the team has shown great progress this season.(39:36-47:11) There is a game-changer on the Oregon defense that DTR and the Bruins offense should worry about. And DTR may get hurt if he doesn't play smart. KAVON THIBODEAUX . Look out for the Aaron Donald of the PAC-12. He is a game changer. James Williams also settles the argument that FOX Sports has been pushing on their broadcasts and lets us know DTR's true health status.. Plan should be to stay away from Thibodeaux(47:12-59:25) What in the World Happened to KYLE PHILIPS this weekend? Is he hurt? COVID? Only James Williams can answer this question. And Jorge Medina as a UCLA fan is a little upset why we don't know his status going into the biggest game of season in a tough place to play. (59:26-1:03:53) Predictions for the Game(1:03:53-1:09:47) Do you believe that an Oregon win will move the needle enough for fans and everyone to think that UCLA can win the PAC12 south or Championship or do they need a victory over Utah also. And if the Bruins win the next two should Chip Kelly be off the hot seat?(1:09:47-1:14:54) Enjoy the atmosphere and the team against Oregon and cheer them on. Forget about the losses. Send us photos to our twitter account if you go to ESPN GAMEDAY.Follow us on twitter at Jorge Medina @funkycoalmedinaJames Wiliams @JHWReporterSomething's Bruin Podcast @SomethingsBruin
We talk about another big road victory for the UCLA football team. They ran over a last-place Arizona Football team and blew them out like they were supposed to. This week they travel up to a place that is filled with horrors for UCLA. Playing in the Northwest isn't easy, especially versus Washington. Where it will cold and rainy this weekend. Will Ethan Garber get some playing time against the school he left? Find out all your answers here. And follow us on twitter @SomethingsBruin(0:00-2:14) Recipe for success for UCLA football is to hand the ball off to Britain Brown, and Zach Charbonet. Every time they compile more rushing yards than DTR, the Bruins win the game.(2:15-4:56) The Rushing attack was alive and well in Arizona. Brown and Charbonet had a total of 38 carries for almost 300 yards. The Bruins need to use this running attack against Washington. Where it will be cold and rainy.(4:57-10:40) Success on the road has been great for UCLA. They are playing a more mentally strong game on the road this season. They are undefeated. James Williams lets you know why.. It will be loud and conditions in Washington will be the worst UCLA has faced this season.(10:45-16:10) With the conditions expected and noise from a raucous Washington crowd, UCLA will have to concentrate on ball control and take the crowd out of the game by scoring first and answering all Washington Scores.(16:11-23:28) Is DTR's job still safe? Does Ethan Garber get a chance to play against the school he chose to leave. (23:29-26:58) Frustrations with DTR is that he is not genuine, he seems like walking Cliche. As a fan Jorge Medina thinks he is not respected by his team as a leader. He wants to like DTR but he doesn't act like there is a lot on the line this season.(26:59-30:56) UCLA defense had a better week, which is why it took this long to talk about them. But are they going to allow the same medium to big plays that the Bruins Defense has given up to all the QB's they played. Will they attack the backfield with the same tenacity they attacked Arizona with. Which injured Bruins are back for the team.(30:57-34:23) James Williams puts the bow of the Chip Kelly and Jedd Fisch fighting. More stuff came out after the Arizona game.(34-24-40:01) Predictions, who wins the game?Follow us on twitter at Jorge Medina @funkycoalmedinaJames Wiliams @JHWReporterSomething's Bruin Podcast @SomethingsBruin
Welcome to our short show this week. It's Arizona, right. We talk about everything UCLA fans want to talk about and know about. THE DREADED DEFENSE. AND CHIP KELLYWe answer questions from the listeners about the season and Chip Kelly. We go into the offense and then some predictions. If you want to know what is going on in the UCLA locker room. The mood heading into Arizona. James Williams will let you know. Check out our show.(1:30- 2:30) Does it all come together this week against the PAC-12's worst team, and what happens if doesn't come together. What will happen with Chip Kelly.(2:30-5:20) Chip Kelly embarrassed by the notion that he offered Jedd Fisch the coach of Arizona a job, and has vehemently denied it, James talks about the story he broke about it. (5:25-12:07) James Williams talks about deficiencies in our defense. One of the main reasons this team can't get going. They have now been humbled twice, is that enough for them to turn their season around.(12:08-16:30) We talk about the mental focus lacking on the defensive side since the first two games. How the defense stop swarming the ball. They lost focus after LSU game.(16:30-19:05) Offense still not looking balanced. DTR still out running Charbonet and Brown. That can't happen. In victories Charbonet and Brown lead the ground attack. ](19:06-22:25 ) Will this team make it over the proverbial hump and get UCLA excited about football again. Or will it be a disappointment of a year. Is their still time to turn it all around.(22:26-24:11) If things keep looking dreary, and their is more losing. Look for change to happen within the program.(24:15-27;34 ) QB Chase Griffin looked like real leader and winner when he filled in for DTR. If Chip is really on the hot seat why not give that kid a shot again.(27:35- 30:21) Predictions for the Arizona game
Today we have a special week as we invite Arizona State Football Beat Reporter Michelle Gardner of the Arizona Republic and AZ Central to join us UCLA Beat Report from the the Orange County Register James Williams and co-host Jorge Medina in this special FIRST TAKE and PTI edition of the Something's Bruin Podcast. Both teams are 3-1 and lost to a powerfully ranked mid-major school and won their first pac-12 league game. Can this game decide who the winner of the South will be in the Pac12 or is it too early to tell. We will tell you.(0;00-2:19) Introduction of our guest Michelle Gardner, beat reporter for the Arizona State Sun Devils fo the Arizona Republic.(2:20-3:30) Both UCLA and Arizona State have been the playing the same style of football, both teams lost to a ranked mid-major team and won their first league game. And both are the favorite to come out of the South now.(3:31-8:20 ) Both Michelle Gardner talk about the Offenses for both teams and their impact players. QB Jayden Daniels come home to California looking for the upset. He is looking to make an impact for Arizona State. RB Rashad White looks to break through that UCLA tough run defense. Arizona State will look to run. On the other side Charbonet and DTR will look to make a difference for the Bruins. Charbonet got his first start against Stanford. Kyle Philips came up big and will need a repeat performance (8:23-18:45) Arizona State defense has been a real strength of their team. Darian Butler is a monster linebacker that will give the Bruins some trouble and pressure. Their defense has been stout and don't allow the big plays. Arizona State front has been a bit thin this year. For UCLA Quinton Lake looks to return to the field this week. He should make an impact on defense. After the defense seem to wake up in the first half of the Stanford game. They held Stanford to under a hundred yards rushing. Which bolds big as they face tough running ASU team. They will look to force turnovers. They still can't defend the big play which almost got them in trouble against Stanford. The Secondary looks frustrating again with back to back 50 yard touchdowns. ASU shouldn't give UCLA the same trouble, that is not their game. (18:46-27:02) Coaching styles differ, how will Herm Edwards coach against the Innovative style of Chip Kelly. ASU hasn't faced a team with this caliber of offense so far. Edwards out recruited UCLA and USC in southern california. But an investigation in the ASU football department, the momentum has stalled a bit. Chip Kelly is the polar opposite on he handles injury news and program stuff, compared to Edwards.
