It's being reported that Miami Hurricanes defensive end Nyjalik Kelly will be leaving through the transfer portal. Kelly missed most of last season with injury after a promising freshman season in 2022. In that first year, he recorded 15 quarterback pressures and four sacks. Why would Kelly decide to leave Miami now and where might he end up? Do the Hurricanes have his possible replacement lined up? Miami recently hosted USC transfer DE Romello Height for a visit.Host Alex Donno and The Truth Teller Bruce Warner discuss the impact of Kelly's exit and hope young talent like Malik Bryant, Jayden Wayne, and Marquise Lightfoot are ready to step up soon. Along with Rueben Bain, Miami has experienced defensive ends like Marshall transfer Elijah Alston and Akheem Mesidor ready to return from injury. The guys discuss Miami receiving an RPM prediction from Steve Wiltfong to land 4-Star EDGE Zion Grady. Will the Enterprise HS (Alabama) standout choose The Hurricanes over the Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers?Join our LOCKED ON CANES INSIDERS texting community and chat with host Alex Donno any time by clicking this link: https://joinsubtext.com/lockedoncanes. The Miami Hurricanes have worked hard for the past five weeks on the practice field. On Friday night, they'll play their spring game at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. What have been the biggest pros and cons after five weeks of spring football? Host Alex Donno argues that the overall depth and competition levels have improved. The team practices at a military style pace. Unfortunately, certain position groups like defensive tackle and running back have been thin in spring. Quarterbacks Tyler Van Dyke, Jacurri Brown and Emory Williams have all done well to this point.  Donno lays down what he expects fans will see in the spring game. Expect to see playmakers from the edge like Nyjalik Kelly, Akheem Mesidor and Rueben Bain. Hopefully we will see wide receivers making plays. With an improved offensive line, they should have more time to run routes and create separation. The execution needs to follow. While running back Mark Fletcher and cornerback Damari Brown have not arrived yet, Alex expects both of them to be difference makers on the field in the fall.  You can chat with Donno any time on our new Subtext SMS texting service. Who will be the most improved Miami Hurricanes players throughout spring football? Host Alex Donno believes quarterbacks Emory Williams and Jacurri Brown will be near the top of that list. Jacurri Brown might even be the leader in the clubhouse with his improving accuracy as a thrower. Donno is also keeping an eye on freshman receivers Ray Ray Joseph and Robby Washington. Robby could play a big role on special teams as a returner this fall. Also keep an eye on experienced transfer cornerback Terry Roberts Jr from Iowa and young pass rushers Nyjalik Kelly, Rueben Bain and Jayden Wayne. Alex addresses a point he made about Tyler Van Dyke being clearly the best quarterback on the team at this moment. IF the others can give him true competition, let the best man win. Alex is asked by a listener on twitter who will lead Miami in sacks this year. Donno expects Akheem Mesidor to lead the team for the second straight season but to get into double digits this year. Also watch out for an improving sack total from sophomore Nyjalik Kelly. The Miami Hurricanes basketball team will face the Indiana Hoosiers TONIGHT in the second round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. The Miami Hurricanes will start week two of spring football practice this week. We will be watching the continuing development of the three scholarship quarterbacks. Can Emory Williams build on a great first week in college? Can Jacurri Brown continue to become more polished as a passer? Host Alex Donno explains why despite buzz for Miami's backups, Tyler Van Dyke is still far and away the best QB on the team.  Alex discusses other things he will be watching for. Will we see players like Akheem Mesidor and Riley Williams make their spring debuts this week? Will Miami's wide receivers consistently hold on to footballs? Drops were a problem all year in practice. Donno wants upper-classmen like Xavier Restrepo, Colbie Young and Jacolby George to set the tone. We look forward to watching Young match up with CB Davonte Brown in the spring game next month. Will newcomers like Francis Mauigoa, Kaleb Spencer and Samson Okunlola continue to shine? Donno shares some recruiting notes via CaneSport's Steven Wagner. The Hurricanes are high on the list of quarterback Michael Van Buren and 5-star DE Dylan Stewart. Stewart appreciates hall of fame pass rusher Jason Taylor being on Miami's staff. Will newcomers like Francis Mauigoa, Kaleb Spencer and Samson Okunlola continue to shine?Donno shares some recruiting notes via CaneSport's Steven Wagner. The Hurricanes are high on the list of quarterback Michael Van Buren and 5-star DE Dylan Stewart. Stewart appreciates hall of fame pass rusher Jason Taylor being on Miami's staff. Donno shares his thoughts after reviewing the tape of quarterback prospect Judd Anderson, who will visit Miami in April. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Miami Hurricanes can raise the floor for their football team in 2023 if they can vastly improve their offensive line. The Hurricanes have added stars G Javion Cohen and C Matt Lee in the transfer portal. Returning players T Jalen Rivers and G Anez Cooper seem to be improving. Miami have added impactful true freshmen in 5-star offensive tackles Francis Mauigoa and Samson Okunlola. Mauigoa is already earning reps with starters in practice. The guys discuss the importance of keeping quarterback Tyler Van Dyke's jersey clean and what to expect from backup Jacurri Brown's development. Alex Donno and guest Bruce Warner break down Miami's additions and subtractions at the line of scrimmage. The guys also discuss new defensive tackles Branson Deen and Thomas Gore. Bruce has concerns over both guys being under 300 lbs. Will they be able to clog running lanes? Donno shares his concern but notes that both transfers have the ability to rush the passer well from the interior. The Hurricanes are missing several top D-linemen in spring practice due to minor injuries like Jahfari Harvey, Jared Harrison-Hunte, Akheem Mesidor, Jake Lichtenstein and Leonard Taylor. Bruce and Alex discuss Miami's upcoming opening matchup against Drake in the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament. Alex relays a medical opinion from “the Pro Football Doc” David Chao, who thinks Norchad Omier suffered a grade 2 or even grade 3 ankle sprain. Since Omier is an athletic big man, the ankle could be very difficult for him to play through. Omier has been working with trainers around the clock to be ready for Friday Night. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. The Miami Hurricanes will reportedly lose defensive ends coach Rod Wright to a job with the Houston Texans in the NFL. Wright spent the 2022 season in Miami and did well with defensive ends like Akheem Mesidor, Jahfari Harvey and Nyjaliek Kelly. An offseason of turnover continues, as Miami has already had to replace a defensive coordinator, linebackers coach, offensive coordinator & QB coach, running backs coach, and still seeks a wide receivers coach. Host Alex Donno argues that this should be the easiest decision of Mario Cristobal's career. Cristobal needs to offer the DE coaching job to Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor. Taylor is on the staff as a defensive analyst and is believed to be well liked by Cristobal. Jason, by all accounts, is an effective teacher and promising recruiter. Donno thanks listeners for being supportive and tweeting him prayers and positive vibes during a health scare he had on Saturday. Thankfully, all the tests have come back fine. Which Canes players have the opportunity to put up big numbers this week and contribute to a victory? Will Henry Parrish and Thad Franklin (will he play this week?) thrive against one of the worst rushing defenses in the ACC. Virginia is 11th against the run, giving up 147.7 rushing yards per game. Will WR Colbie Young continue the tear he's been on since the fourth quarter of the North Carolina game? Young Had 127 receiving yards and two touchdowns last week. Host Alex Donno brings you the weekly Canes Football stock report. In addition to Young and Parrish, Donno is buying stock in quarterback Jake Garcia to bounce back from his rough outing against Duke. Garcia will start this week in place of the injured Tyler Van Dyke. On defense, Donno is buying stock in safety Kam Kinchens. Kinchens the co-ACC leader in interceptions (3), and he's facing the most intercepted quarterback in the ACC. Brennan Armstrong of Virginia has thrown 9 interceptions this season. Donno is also buying Akheem Mesidor stock, since Miami's pass rush will need to pressure Armstrong into mistakes! The Hurricanes are favored by 2.5 points. Donno explains why. The Canes are 0-6 against the spread this season and yet Vegas keeps favoring them. This team's intangible implosions are tough to predict. Why is there such a disconnect between what these Miami Hurricanes players are learning in practice and what they are executing in games? Miami's coaches came from places like Oregon, Georgia, Alabama, Auburn and Michigan. Should we give them the benefit of the doubt in teaching proper techniques and habits? Many of the top players on the team seem to be Mario guys, not Manny guys. Players like Colbie Young and Akheem Mesidor are carrying the team. Have the Manny guys started to check out? Host Alex Donno gives you the five things he learned about the Hurricanes after their tough loss to Duke. We saw that there is a bigger gap between quarterbacks Tyler Van Dyke and Jake Garcia than a lot of us thought. Can Jake bounce back from a tough performance if he ends up the starter for the foreseeable future? Why did 240lb running back Thad Franklin get zero snaps against Duke? The defense missed 16 tackles. Are they reverting to their techniques from last year? Donno gives his take on why this team might indeed be better THIS YEAR, in the short term, if Manny Diaz was still coaching it, but why he still would not trade in this coaching staff for the previous ones. Plus, OL commit Francis Mauigoa is fully committed to The U. Hear what Francis had to say. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Miami Hurricanes gave positive news on the injury front. Mario Cristobal seems confident that tighe end Will Mallory will return this week. He said there is a chance Jacolby George will play for just the second time this year. Center Jakai Clark should be back and so should running back Henry Parrish. Meanwhile, Cristobal says they are “taking it slow” with LT Zion Nelson and OL Justice Oluwaseun has a “significant injury.”Host Alex Donno emphasizes that the Canes will need all hands on deck to beat a pretty good Duke Blue Devils team at home. Duke is one of the best running teams in the ACC, averaging 206 yards per game, but the Hurricanes boast the 13th best rush defense in the country. That could be the biggest advantage Miami holds in this game. However, Duke quarterback Riley Leonard is a dangerous dual threat, so the Canes will need to keep him contained. Miami will offer the top pass rush that Leonard has faced so far, led by Akheem Mesidor, Jahfari Harvey, Leonard Taylor and Darrell Jackson. Donno explains who injuries on the OL and running back room have affected Miami's ability to run the football well. Will getting Henry Parrish and Jakai Clark back make a big difference? Donno answers questions from listeners on twitter. Can Mario Cristobal follow in the footsteps of Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel, who had a rough first season and now sits on top the SEC with a win over Bama in his second?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Miami scores their first conference victory and improves to 3-3 on the season. Van Dyke appears to have a new top target. 6-5 transfer wide receiver Colbie Young caught 9 balls for 110 yards and a touchdown. He was targeted 13 times. Young has really stepped up in Miami's past 2 games and has seized the opportunities from multiple injuries on Miami's roster.  Host Alex Donno reacts to Miami's victory, which showcased another excellent performance from defensive end Akheem Mesidor. Mesidor led the team with 8 tackles and grabbed 3 and a half sacks. Linebacker Corey Flagg had another solid game with a sack and 2 tackles for loss. Donno also goes over the self-inflicted wounds from all of Miami's penalties. The Hurricanes nearly blew a 20-0 lead in this game thanks to 17 penalties for 159 yards. Miami had been one of the least penalized teams in the nation, so was this performance a fluke? Can the Miami Hurricanes slow down the North Carolina Tarheels offense? UNC is averaging 507 yards per game which is best in the ACC and 6th in the nation. Quarterback Drake Maye is passing for 319 yards per game. Miami's pass rush led by Leonard Tayor and Akheem Mesidor will need to be disruptive while we can expect defensive coordinator Kevin Steele to play more zone and drop more into coverage than he did against Middle Tennessee. Larry Blustein joins host Alex Donno to break down Miami's game plan for the Tar Heels. Blu, who covered Miami quarterbacks Tyler Van Dyke and Jake Garcia in high school, gives his take on why Van Dyke has regressed from a season ago. The Miami Hurricanes will look for a bounce back performance when they host the Blue Raiders of Middle Tennessee on Saturday, September 24th, 2022 from Hard Rock Stadium. Host Alex Donno shares his keys to the game for Mario Cristobal's team. The Hurricanes would like to start faster and stronger this week. In all 3 of their games so far, the Canes have looked a bit soft on defense early on before settling in. Miami will need to play more disciplined, assignment football. While the defense was great against Texas A&M, there were certain plays where they abandoned their gaps to play overly aggressive. On offense, the route running from Miami's wide receivers has not been crisp enough. The Hurricanes will look to dominate the line of scrimmage once again. The offensive line has become a strength of the team and the D-Line has been formidable. Players like Leonard Taylor, Akheem Mesidor, and Jalen Rivers have really stood out at the line of scrimmage on both sides. Donno wants to see quarterback Tyler Van Dyke spread the football around to numerous receivers to give them confidence. Will we see more this week from the likes of Romello Brinson, Jaleel Skinner, Colbie Young and Frank Ladson? What about true freshman Isaiah Horton? And of course, Miami needs to score TOUCHDOWNS after being held out of the end zone last week.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!NugenixNow get a complimentary bottle of Nugenix Total T when you text COLLEGEto 231-231. It's Miami Hurricanes game day! The Canes face the Texas A&M Aggies on the road in the first big test of the Mario Cristobal era. Miami has a special quarterback in Tyler Van Dyke, can he make the difference in a close game? The Aggies have made a quarterback switch from Haynes King to Max Johnson. Could Johnson exploit Miami in pass coverage? Miami will need to put constant pressure on him with Leonard Taylor, Akheem Mesidor, Nyjalik Kelly, Darrell Jackson and the rest of their top D-linemen.  Host Alex Donno gives his final matchup predictions and keys. Special teams will be a huge factor in this game, assuming it's close. If Andy Borregales can keep booming his kickoffs for touchbacks and punter Lou Hedley pins the Aggies deep as much as possible, these “hidden yards” could make the difference. Miami's offensive line will need to sustain the progress they have made under Mario Cristobal and OL coach Alex Mirabal. Having left tackle Zion Nelson back to 100% will be big.  Donno reads some great tweets and YouTube comments from listeners on their biggest keys to the game and concerns heading in. Will Miami be able to tackle consistently? Which receivers will step up in place of the injured Xavier Restrepo? Miami will hope for big contributions from Brashard Smith and Michael Redding.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Miami Hurricanes will have to face the Texas A&M Aggies without top receiver Xavier Restrepo. The Miami Herald and other outlets are reporting that Restrepo has suffered a foot injury and could miss several week. In Miami's first two games, Restrepo has caught 11 out of Tyler Van Dyke's 33 completions and has been targeted in 27% of TVD's 45 pass attempts. This will leave a big opportunity for Brashard Smith, who will likely replace him in the starting lineup. But replacing Restrepo will likely happen by committee. Miami needs to see big time production from receivers like Key'Shawn Smith, Michael Redding, Jacolby George and Romello Brinson. Host Alex Donno and guest Luke Chaney from All Hurricanes discuss the Restrepo injury and what it will mean for Miami's offense this weekend. Reports say Texas A&M will make a starting quarterback switch from Haynes King to Max Johnson. Johnson is less mobile and more of a prototypical pocket passer. He could likely do a better job finding the Aggies receivers open, but Miami will need to frustrate him with their pass rush. Donno and Luke go over the keys to the game and a consistent pass rush from players like Leonard Taylor, Akheem Mesidor and Nyjaliek Kelly are among them. Also, Miami will try and replicate the success Appalachian State had against A&M on the ground, and the Canes can hopefully dominate field position with their punting game and special teams coverage. The guys go over the odds for the game which includes Miami now as a 6-point underdog and an over-under of 45 points. The Miami Hurricanes defense had too many “soft spots” in their season opener against Bethune-Cookman. Head Coach Mario Cristobal said, “In practice we were closing on stuff a lot quicker.” Cristobal was critical about the lack of quarterback containment that led to some big plays, but was optimistic that every issue is fixable. Coach Cristobal and defensive coordinator Kevin Steele were complimentary of defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor, linebacker Corey Flagg and defensive tackle Darrell Jackson.  Coach Steele described Miami's upcoming challenge in defending Southern Miss star running back Frank Gore Jr. this Saturday. Southern Miss presents many offensive challenges as a team that basically runs three separate offensive systems.  Host Alex Donno discusses positive injury news for the Hurricanes. Running back Jaylan Knighton and left tackle Zion Nelson are expected to make their season debuts in week 2. DT Leonard Taylor and C Jakai Clark, who both left the Bethune-Cookman game with minor injuries, are both expected back this week! Donno analyses offensive coordinator Josh Gattis' thoughts on quarterback play and offensive balance. And Donno shares the latest recruiting buzz on 5-star defensive tackle David Hicks, 4-star receiver Tyler Williams, 5-star CB Cormani McClain, 5-star WR Jurrion Dickey, 5-star WR Hykeem Williams, 5-star WR Brandon Inniss and 4-star RB Mark Fletcher. The Miami Hurricanes started the Mario Cristobal era on a high note with a 70-13 win over the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats. The Hurricanes racked up 305 team rushing yards and scored a team record 7 rushing TD's. Miami quarterbacks Tyler Van Dyke and Jake Garcia combined to complete 21 passes on 24 attempts. The offensive line blocked well, with no sacks given up. The defense recorded 3 takeaways including a pick-6 by Gil Frierson.  Host Alex Donno gives his 3 biggest takeaways from the victory. There were big positives on offense, but we still don't know who the second option at wide receiver will be after Xavier Restrepo. Restrepo had a big game with 100 receiving yards and a touchdown. Running backs Henry Parrish and Thad Franklin combined for 5 touchdowns, with Parrish racking up 108 rushing yards.  The defense is still a work in progress. The tackling wasn't great, they struggled at times to contain mobile quarterbacks, and there were some blown coverages. On the positive end, defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor had an excellent game and linebacker Corey Flagg tackled extremely well. Donno appreciates Mario Cristobal's no-nonsense mentality, and described what it means for Mario to be back home on the Miami sidelines.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! It's finally game week for the Miami Hurricanes. The Canes will open their season against Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, September 3rd at Hard Rock Stadium. Stanley is expected to play heavily on special teams and will serve as part of the running back rotation. The Hurricanes lost freshman RB TreVonte' Citizen for the season, while sophomore Don Chaney will miss some time with injury. Guest Brian Monroe, a former Hurricanes punter and host of All Canes Radio, joins Alex Donno to preview the upcoming season. How will the running back rotation play out this year? What areas can quarterback Tyler Van Dyke improve most in his sophomore season? Expect Van Dyke to rely heavily on Xavier Restrepo and Brashard Smith in the passing game. Brian breaks down Miami's deep defensive line. The Miami Hurricanes are wrapping up the second week of fall camp. The season begins on September 3rd, when the Canes host Bethune-Cookman at Hard Rock Stadium. Miami is seeing progress at multiple positions including their very deep defensive line. 17 year old true freshman Nyjalik Kelly is being described as a “freak of nature” by multiple teammates. Transfer linemen Akheem Mesidor and Mitch Agude are also receiving praise.  Host Alex Donno is joined by guest Luke Chaney from AllHurricanes.com to discuss progress so far. Luke discusses improvement seen between Monday and Thursday in Miami's wide receivers holding on to the football. Drops have been an issue to this point but perhaps that is being cleaned up. Xavier Restrepo caught a pair of beautiful deep passes from Tyler Van Dyke on Thursday. TVD has been solid all camp, and true freshman QB Jacurri Brown is showing improvement. According to Luke, running back Jaylan Knighton has looked very fluid running routes and catching passes. He's even gotten some reps lined up wide.  Donno shares a recruiting update on the Washington twins Robby and Bobby. There have been rumors throughout the week about a possible flip to Louisville for these Class of 2023 Miami commits. The twins were asked about this publicly on Thursday night and they reaffirmed their commitment to The U. According to CaneSport, they've canceled an official visit to Louisville.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! LinkedIn LinkedIn jobs helps you find the candidates you want to talk to, faster. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!LinkedInLinkedIn jobs helps you find the candidates you want to talk to, faster. Mario Cristobal has been critical of his team's consistency so far, as the Miami Hurricanes prepare for their 2023 regular season debut. Canes critics have begun using Cristobal's words as a sign that he doesn't believe in his team for this season. Mario recently talked about his team “fading” at the end of a grueling practice. Miami held their first scrimmage of fall camp over the weekend and Cristobal said “progress is being made but there's still work to do.”Host Alex Donno breaks down Cristobal's words and the meaning behind them. While the Canes are absolutely a work in progress, no one should interpret his words as a lack of belief. Cristobal is the type to set his goals so high that they are virtually impossible to reach. Donno discusses the progress being made by the defensive line, with a player like transfer Akheem Mesidor from West Virginia looking positively dominant so far. The offensive line does not have as much depth, but the top 6 or 7 have been serviceable. Miami will soon get starting left tackle Zion Nelson back from injury. Donno discusses the possible next commits to The U in recruiting and why current Miami commits are dropping clues about the “second wave.” Could players like 5-star OT Samson Okunlola and 5-star WR Jurrion Dickey become verbal commits soon? Donno takes Q&A from listeners about the order of succession at QB, Cristobal's coaching chops and the Hurricanes defensive line.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!LinkedInLinkedIn jobs helps you find the candidates you want to talk to, faster. The Miami Hurricanes scrimmage on August 13th, 2022 reportedly featured overall dominance by the defense after good moments from the offense early on. Transfer defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor reportedly had a very strong day, with offensive linemen Jalen Rivers and Jakai Clark holding their own well on the offensive line.  Host Alex Donno breaks down what we've heard from Mario Cristobal along with some other reported details. The first scrimmage went a long way in helping establish the new culture that Cristobal is trying to create, and gave players an opportunity to earn spots on the depth chart. Tyler Van Dyke, Miami's sophomore quarterback, reportedly looked great but there were several drops from his receivers. Can Miami clean this up by September? Donno answers a series of questions from listeners on twitter to @LockedOnCanes. Will Miami's D-line get manhandled by Texas A&M? Why are people not talking more about Canes freshman DE Cyrus Moss? This weekend, Penn State football hosts several key recruits from both the portal and the following several recruiting classes. Recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins the BWI Daily edition to discuss the critical names and positions Penn State is hosting over the next few hours. Host Thomas Frank Carr starts the show by addressing Penn State's immediate need, edge rusher. The team hosts former Maryland edge rusher Demeioun Robinson on Friday as they continue to seek help at that position in the portal. But, is he the answer that they seek? Yes, according to T-Frank. He explains what skills the former top 100 recruit has and why he might be the best option left after Penn State missed out on their top targets earlier this year. He and Snyder also discuss Akheem Mesidor and how he would fit at Penn State. Head coach James Franklin outlined that Penn State is very interested in a portal edge so landing one will be critical. However, according to both Snyder and T-Frank, something might get in the way of the Nittany Lions landing either prospect. Next, Snyder runs down the list of players visiting this weekend in recruiting. Players he mentions include unranked defensive end Mason Robinson from McDonough, and several other important players in the 2023 cycle, including quarterback Marcus Stokes. The Nittany Lions are also hosting another edge rusher, this one from outside of the region in Durham native Jaybron Harvey. Despite having four players on the offensive line locked up for the Class of 2023, Penn State continues to host offensive linemen. Georgia native Paul Mubenga visits this weekend. What position does he play? T-Frank and Snyder discuss if the 6-4 lineman can play tackle or guard. Finally, they wrap up with players that Snyder spoke to this week after previously visiting Penn State. First, they highlight the interior offensive line prospect for 2024, Kyle Altuner, a standout at the Under Armour camp in Baltimore last month. T-Frank and Snyder discuss his potential position, their thoughts on his performance from their in-person experience, and what Altuner had to say about Penn State. Finally, they discuss ascending quarterback prospect for 2024, Davi Belfort. The WVU football program has been blindsided. The Mountaineers best defensive player, Akheem Mesidor, has entered the transfer portal. The decision came as a major surprise to WVU coach Neal Brown and his staff. Brown held an impromptu news conference following Thursday's practice to share his thoughts. The Mountaineer coach said although he's hurt and saddened by Mesidor's decision, he's confident in the program's direction and its future. In this episode, the "Guys" react to the Mesidor decision and discuss the hiring of new women's basketball coach, Dawn Plitzuweit. Questions and comments complete the show. The "Guys" return on Monday with a scheduled appearance from Nathan Adrian.
