Miami Hurricanes Talking To Doug Nussmeier About OC Job? Pros & Cons. Canes Players Set For 2023 Jump

A new name has emerged for the Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator job. According to Pro Football Scoop, former Cowboys quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier has spoken with Mario Cristobal about the opening. Nussmeier is well respected and has held big OC jobs in college in places like Alabama, Washington, Florida and Michigan. He and Cristobal worked together at Bama in 2013.  Host Alex Donno reminds his listeners that Nussmeier being a candidate does not mean he's the only candidate and it does not necessarily mean he is the frontrunner. There are pros and cons to Nuss. He's oozing with experience, but in his final four years as a college OC, the offensive numbers at Michigan and Florida were not good at all. Is Toledo head coach Jason Candle still an option? What about Scott Frost, who is still getting some buzz despite Donno being told he is not in the running.  Alex answers twitter questions from listeners, who can tweet us @LockedOnCanes. Donno identifies which Miami Hurricanes players can make the biggest jump from 2022 to 2023. Alex expects players like Tyler Van Dyke, Jacolby George, Elijah Arroyo, Wesley Bissainthe and Anez Cooper to improve on their 2023 campaigns.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Miami Hurricanes Closing In On OC? Everyone Will Be Happy, Says John Ruiz. 2024 WR Recruiting

The Miami Hurricanes search for a new offensive coordinator continues. Could the Canes be closing in on Josh Gattis' replacement soon? John Ruiz was asked if he has any news on the search and he answered, “Everyone is going to be happy.” Is Jason Candle, the head coach at Toledo, a candidate? We know Mario Cristobal likes him and tried to hire him a season ago, but would he leave his HC gig for the OC job at The U? Host Alex Donno welcomes in guest Brian Smith from All Hurricanes to discuss which OC candidate might check off the most boxes. Brian brings up Cristobal's past success with former UNLV head coach Marcus Arroyo and wonders if a reunion of the former Oregon colleagues could be in store. Brian discusses the importance of getting this hire right, and what he is hearing from class of 2024 wide receiver recruits on what they need to see from Miami's passing offense in 2023, and what type of coordinator they'd like to see Miami go with.  Now that the class of 2023 is fully signed and enrolled, Donno and Brian go over Miami's class, which finished #7 in the country. Brian goes into detail on 3-star quarterback Emory Williams and how his high football IQ could set him up for big success. He breaks down 4-star linebacker Malik Bryan and what makes him such a dangerous off-ball linebacker.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Do We Cross Scott Frost's Name Off The Miami Hurricanes OC List? NIL Slippery Slope

The Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator search continues. Host Alex Donno woke up on Wednesday morning thinking former Nebraska and UCF head coach Scott Frost could be the frontrunner for the job. Now, Donno is hearing that Frost likely won't be coming to South Florida. Is this turn of events coming from Frost's side or from Miami's side? Was he ever a strong candidate to begin with? Donno discusses the pros and cons for Fost while also making a case for Frost as someone who has been a successful offensive coach in the past and someone who constructed a solid roster at UCF. Donno takes a look at how many national lists Miami signee Rueben Bain has been left off of. Hurricane Bain, one of the most decorated high school football players in recent memory, was not listed in On3's top ten list for State of Florida players or for edge rushers. Donno makes the case for why Bane deserves more national love.  Alex warns listeners of a slippery slope the NCAA is now walking down based on the enforcement of potential NIL violations. They will now be using tips and news reports as reasons to start investigations, while immediately presuming guilt instead of innocence. This puts the burden of proof on the accused school rather than the accuser. Donno fears more bad than good will come out of this new method. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! It appears Mario Cristobal is looking for BALANCE in play-calling from his next offensive coordinator. Who will the Miami Hurricanes hire to replace former OC Josh Gattis? Host Alex Donno and guest Larry Blustein discuss a candidate that isn't being mentioned very often: Jeff Scott. Should the former USF head coach be considered a strong candidate for the opening? Donno and Blu debate whether we could see any surprise commitments or flips from the Hurricanes on National Signing Day. While the chances for either do not seem great on Tuesday, the Canes are still in the running for 5-star ATH Nyckoles Harbor and 3-star DT Jamel Howard. Will Miami get some good news? Larry discusses what sort of a player Miami has added in walk on wide receiver Patrick Stepelton. The former Cardinal Gibbons high school star announced his commitment to Miami on Monday night. Where Do The Miami Hurricanes Stand With Harbor & Howard Before Signing Day? Latest On OC Targets

The Miami Hurricanes are in the mix for 5-star ATH Nyckoles Harbor and 3-star defensive tackle Jamel Howard before national signing day on February 1st, 2023. Harbor just made an official visit to Oregon, who are considered the favorites here. He did have an in-home visit with Mario Cristoba last week, though. Did Mario give him enough food for thought to help Miami close on Harbor this Wednesday? Meanwhile, Jamel Howard did make an official visit to Coral Gables over the weekend. He said Miami gave him a lot to think about, but the feeling is the Chicago native would like to stay closer to home. Michigan or Wisconsin in the Big 10 could be tough to beat.  Host Alex Donno discusses the latest notes on their recruitment and shares his thoughts on the Hurricanes offensive coordinator search. Who will replace Josh Gattis? Donno believes Scott Frost, the former Nebraska head coach, could be a bona fide candidate. Meanwhile, Donno is not sure if the rumors about Dan Mullen being in Coral Gables last week were accurate. Alex wonders if Miami will swing big, or if Cristobal might go with a “safer” hire, ie someone he has worked with before, like James Coley or Marcus Arroyo.  Listener 904 Hurricane points out that Mario is a “contractor,” not a “handyman” and that what he is doing to Miami's roster is a demolition and full rebuild. Donno goes through every position group and identifies which he thinks has improved most. On paper it has to be the offensive line, adding proven transfers like Javion Cohen and Matt Lee while adding one of the best incoming OL classes in Miami history. Miami Hurricanes NEED Continuity From Their Next OC Hire, Is There A "Perfect" Candidate Out There?

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 28, 2023 33:38

The Miami Hurricanes are about to hire their 5th offensive coordinator in 6 seasons. Tyler Van Dyke is about to work with his 3rd OC in 4 years. Host Alex Donno stresses the need for continuity from the next OC hire. Ideally, the next coordinator would be around for at least three seasons: that would allow them to finish out the Van Dyke era and hopefully help him improve his draft stock, while laying the foundations for Van Dyke's successor.  Donno is asked if there is a “perfect” candidate out there who is a great play caller, relationship builder and recruiter. Donno thinks a combination of Dan Mullen at OC/QB coach with James Coley as WR coach might be the best way to address all those needs. If you want to fill those needs with a singular name, Jason Candle and Warren Ruggiero could each offer a solid solution.  Donno discusses Miami's new preferred walk-on linebacker Tyler Lassiter. Alex discusses the possible reasons off the field why Gattis had to be let go. Donno agrees that Deion Sanders can become a thorn in Miami's side recruiting defensive backs the same way Ohio State's Brian Hartlne has become that in wide receiver recruiting.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! BREAKING: Miami Hurricanes Fire Offensive Coordinator Josh Gattis

The University of Miami announced on Friday that offensive coordinator Josh Gattis has been relieved of his duties by head coach Mario Cristobal. In one season at Miami, Gattis' offensive only managed 19 points per game in 2022. It's been apparent for weeks that Gattis has been looking for other jobs. On Thursday night, a Hurricanes quarterback recruit revealed that Cristobal told him they were searching for a new OC.  Host Alex Donno breaks down the Gattis firing and explains why it had to happen but why this is not an automatic addition by subtraction. Cristobal needs to make solid moves to fill open positions at OC, quarterbacks coach, and wide receivers coach.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Miami Hurricanes reportedly got an in-home visit with 5-star ATH Nyckholes Harbor. The Hurricanes are not considered the favorite for the track star, but can Mario Cristobal use the face time to his benefit to close the deal? Harbor wants to play offense at the college level, wide receiver or tight end, and he wants to run track in addition to football. Host Alex Donno details who the favorite is considered to be at this time, and what it would take for Miami to close the gap before Harbor announces on February 1st.  Meanwhile, the soap opera continues with Hurricanes offensive coordinator Josh Gattis. Donno does not believe it makes sense to keep him around at this point as he appears to be searching for other jobs. Will the instability on the offensive coaching staff continue to hurt Miami's efforts in the portal and in recruiting? We examine the state of Miami's WR room and Alex expects Jacolby George, Colbie Young and Xavier Restrepo to be Miami's three starters, with hopeful positive reps coming for Isaiah Horton, Michael Redding, Frank Ladson, Brashard Smith, and true freshmen Ray Ray Joseph and Robby Washington.  Donno examines some possible candidates for offensive coaching jobs at Miami. Don't rule out names like James Coley and Marcus Arroyo. Toledo head coach Jason Candle just extended his deal there until 2026, so it won't be him. The Miami Hurricanes are trending to land a commitment from 5-star WR Joshisa “JoJo” Trader in the class of 2024. The Chaminade-Madonna standout was crystal balled to Miami by 247's Steve Wiltfon and predicted by On3's Chad Simmons to choose The U. These predictions come very early, though, with over 10 months remaining until the first national signing day of 2024. Can Miami take a commanding lead on Trader and even gain some ground into flipping his high school teammate and fellow 5-star WR Jeremiah Smith, a current Ohio State commit? Guest Brian Smith from All Hurricanes joins host Alex Donno to share insight on Trader's recruitment. Brian spoke to both Trader and Smith over the weekend at Battle 7-on-7. The guys discuss why they feel Miami is the team to beat for transfer cornerback Jaheim Singletary from Georgia. He's a former 5-star recruit with three years of eligibility remaining. Alex and Brian discuss whether it's possible for Miami to pivot Josh Gattis to a different role on the offensive staff if he doesn't leave for another job. Could Miami demote him and bring in a new playcaller? Is this idea practical?  The guys break down Miami's dominant basketball win over Florida State on Tuesday night and what the expectations should be for the Hurricanes in the NCAA tournament. The Miami Hurricanes have officially added veteran cornerback Terry Roberts Jr. in the transfer portal. The former Iowa Hawkeye arrives at The U for his final year of eligibility after 4 productive seasons in Iowa City. Roberts had an excellent 79.9 coverage grade in 5 games last season before suffering an injury.  Host Alex Donno discusses the impact Roberts will add to Miami and Donno loves Roberts' attitude of wanting to come in and COMPETE for every snap he plays. Donno explains why Miami taking so long to settle their offensive coaching situation is starting to affect the roster. It's being reported that Miami might not land Alabama transfer WR Tyler Harrell because of the instability in offensive coaching. The buzz continues to grow that Mario Cristobal could be considering James Coley for a spot on his offensive staff. Coley worked for Cristobal at FIU in 2007, he had a stint as Miami's offensive coordinator under Al Golden, and has South Florida roots and an excellent recruiting resume in the area. Coley is currently serving as the tight ends coach at Texas A&M.  Guest Larry Blustein joins host Alex Donno to talk about whether Coley could find a role at Miami as quarterbacks coach, WR coach, offensive coordinator or some combination of the three. Miami appears to be moving on soon from OC / WR coach Josh Gattis but nothing has been finalized yet, while quarterbacks coach is currently open. Miami Hurricanes Timing For Further Coaching Changes, New Transfers Soon? Singletary Pessimism

The Miami Hurricanes need a new quarterbacks coach to replace Frank Ponce. Miami is also rumored to be needing a new offensive coordinator soon, IF Josh Gattis departs. Why are things taking so long? Is there a certain deadline that needs to be met? Host Alex Donno discusses why Mario Cristobal is working on a timeline that might be slower than what fans are hoping for. Donno believes James Coley, current tight ends coach at Texas A&M and a former Miami OC, is a name to watch at quarterbacks coach.  Donno believes Miami might shuffle their defensive staff too, with the possibility of Charlie Strong being promoted to defensive coordinator. Alex answers questions from listeners. You can tweet the show at @LockedOnCanes. Alex explains why the Jaden Rashada fiasco in Gainesville could lead to NIL reforms in the future. He answers a question about which Miami player projects as a high NFL draft pick. Donno believes Kam Kinchens is the best answer. Leonard Taylor, TreVonte Citizen, Mark Fletcher, Francis Mauigoa and Samson Okunlola also have early round potential.  Alex explains how a 7-5 season could either be a catastrophe or a step in the right direction next year depending on certain conditions. Recruiting expert John Garcia Jr. joins host Alex Donno to discuss the situation. Rashada is expected to land near his California home in the west coast. We suspect the ship has sailed on Miami but you never rule anything out in recruiting. Rumors are swirling that the Canes could soon have offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach openings as well, with Josh Gattis reportedly exploring other opportunities. It's been reported that Gattis might be in play for the WR coach job at Penn State or the OC job at Iowa. Host Alex Donno reports that he has gotten word that Gattis might be in play for an assistant job in the NFL.  Alex discusses potential names to watch for various Hurricanes coaching positions. Could Mario Cristobal reunite with former Oregon colleague Marcus Arroyo? Arroyo was Mario's OC at Oregon until 2019, when they won a PAC 12 title and a Rose Bowl together. James Coley, an excellent recruiter with Miami ties, could be an option at WR coach or QB coach. Would Miami take a shot at Wake Forest OC Warren Ruggiero or Toledo head coach Jason Candle? Candle was nearly hired as OC last year.  Donno explains why bigger names like Ken Dorsey, Kliff Kingsbury or Dan Mullen seem unrealistic at this time. The Miami Hurricanes hosted priority WR target Gary Bryant Jr. for a visit. Offensive coordinator Josh Gattis was not present for the visit and had no contact with Bryant, not even over the phone, per CaneSport's Matt Schodell. Is this a sign that Gattis is not part of Miami's plans for next season? Host Alex Donno describes the oddity of the situation and whether or not this confirms the theory that Gattis will soon be replaced. It's possible he could have had a family emergency or could be suffering from an illness. Bryant still gave very positive feedback on his Miami visit. He left Coral Gables without committing but was always expected to take his time. Bryant is finishing next semester at USC before enrolling at his next destination. He also plans to visit Arizona, Texas A&M and will have an in-home with Penn State coaches.  Miami did land commitments from transfer portal TE Cam McCormick and preferred walk on Duke LB Rocky Shelton. If that report is true, has Miami already pulled his offer or moved on from McClain completely? Will 5-Star TJ Capers Choose Miami? Hurricanes Can Start A Transfer Portal Second Wave This Weekend

The Miami Hurricanes await the decision of 5-star 2024 edge rusher TJ Capers. The Miami Columbus HS standout will announce his verbal commitment this Saturday, January 7th. He will be choosing between Miami, Louisville, USC, Colorado and Georgia. Despite Capers being a local player, the buzz at this moment favors Louisville. Host Alex Donno notes that since Capers is announcing nearly a year before he can officially sign, his recruitment will still be up for grabs until next December. The schools who miss out will not give up.  Donno discusses Miami's upcoming visit with Kentucky defensive tackle Justin Rogers. Rogers started every game for the Wildcats in 2022 and would be an excellent fit on the Canes. Miami has a major need at defensive tackle. The Hurricanes will also receive visits this weekend from Iowa cornerback Terry Roberts and Arkansas defensive tackle Isaiah Nichols. Donno believes Robers will commit to the Hurricanes. Miami has made an offer to Michigan transfer receiver Andrel Anthony Jr. Anthony has a lot of potential but was inconsistent at Michigan.  Alex talks about Miami's approach in the transfer portal and how Cristobal's patience might pay off. Rather than going all in for several early transfers, Miami added four players quickly and seem to be waiting for the second wave. Donno has heard that Miami is aggressively pursuing UCF center Matt Lee, and believes Lee would be a great addition.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Miami Hurricanes: Confidence In Cormani McClain Signing? Canes Need To Target This Portal C & WR

The Miami Hurricanes have employed a patient transfer portal approach under head coach Mario Cristobal. In recent days we have seen standout UCF center Matt Lee, Cal WR J. Michael Sturdivant, Texas A&M defensive tackle Anthony Lucas and LSU LB DeMario Tolan hit the portal. Will Miami's patience pay off and help them land high caliber players like these? Host Alex Donno chats with Brian Smith of All Hurricanes and Fan Nation. Brian covered Matt Lee at UCF and explains why Miami should absolutely pursue the Central Florida native. Brian also watched Sturdivant play in person on multiple occasions and explains what makes him so sought after. Brian recaps his time watching Miami signees Rueben Bain and Robert Stafford at Under Armour All America and breaks down how quickly each can contribute at the collegiate level. Also, can Samson Okunlola compete for a starting offensive tackle spot immediately? Smith shares insight from his one-on-one conversation with Cormani McClain at the Under Armour event and why he still considers Miami to be the favorite for McClain's signature. He has covered McClain for years and explains who Cormani's personality makes him more difficult to read than a lot of other players.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Cormani McClain Will Sign On Jan 15th: Miami Hurricanes, Colorado or Bama? Canes Portal Update

Cormani McClain told the media at the Under Armour All America game that he will be signing on January 15th. The 5-star cornerback has been verbally committed to the Miami Hurricanes since October. He says Miami is the only school he is considering but there have been plenty of rumors about a possible flip to Colorado or Alabama. McClain told Brian Smith from Fan Nation that Colorado head coach Deion Sanders calls him literally every day. If McClain plans to sign in January, it could only be a grant in aid agreement with a university. He cannot officially sign a football letter of intent until February 1st.  Host Alex Donno recaps the latest McClain news and explains why nobody can predict for sure what he is thinking. With that said, Donno still considers Miami to be the favorite but will not make any serious predictions until we get closer to 1/15. Donno talks about Texas A&M defensive tackle Anthony Lucas, who entered the transfer portal on Tuesday. The Miami Hurricanes MUST pursue his signature.  Donno received confirmation from the father of Iowa transfer corner Terry Roberts that his son will be picking the University of Miami. Roberts is scheduled to visit Miami this weekend. Donno talks about Nyckoles Harbor and how academics and track, in addition to football, will be factors in his decision. The 5-star athlete will choose his school on February 1st and Miami is among his finalists. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Miami Hurricanes are set to host a pair of veteran transfer portal players for visitors this weekend. Per Gaby Urrutia of Inside The U, the Hurricanes will be hosting Iowa cornerback Terry Roberts and Arkansas defensive tackle Isaiah Nichols. There could be more visits in the works, but only these two have been confirmed as of Tuesday morning. Roberts and Nichols would both be sixth year seniors. Hurricanes have a major need for defensive tackle, especially, and Nichols has more than 20 starts under his belt in the SEC. He stands 6-3 and weighs over 300 lbs.  Host Alex Donno discusses the impact that Roberts and Nichols could have if they choose the University of Miami. Donno hopes Miami can get in the mix for transferring UCF center Matt Lee. Lee graded out highest among all of UCF's offensive players last season. The Hurricanes appear to be in the market for a center. Donno discusses recent rumors linking Hurricanes defensive analyst DeMarcus Van Dyke to the vacant defensive backs coach job at Florida State. Donno explains the origin of the rumor and why he believes there is nothing of substance to it at this time.  Donno asks for thoughts and prayers for the family of Bills safety and former Pitt Panther Damar Hamlin. Miami Hurricanes Land Surprise QB Commit Vic Sutton, Where Canes Stand With 5-Star Nyckoles Harbor

The Miami Hurricanes have received a commitment from 3-star quarterback Vic Sutton in the Class of 2023. Sutton appears to be a preferred walkon, who also had Power 5 offers from Arkansas, Maryland and Virginia Tech. Sutton is a dual threat quarterback who likes to attack downfield and possesses shifty moves as a runner. The fact that he's a walkon, not a scholarship player, likely means he isn't the backup plan for any of Miami's veteran quarterbacks in case one decides to enter the portal.  Host Alex Donno reviews his thoughts on Sutton. Donno talks about 5-star athlete Nyckoles Harbor, who considers Miami among his finalists heading into a February 1st commitment. Harbor, at 6-5 225 with Olympic potential track speed, wants to focus on the offensive side of the football at TE or WR. Donno would love to see Harbor line up wide at Miami and become Andre Johnson 2.0. Michigan and South Carolina are considered the favorites. Does Miami have a shot? Donno recaps a great start for Miami signee Rueben Bain at Under Armor All America. Bain has been a consensus standout performance so far, and could still earn his 5th star. Miami is a finalist for class of 2024 5-star cornerback Ellis Robinson out of IMG Academy.
