On this week's episode, we talk about NFL Free Agency: Falcons and Bears moves, Tom Brady watch, and more legal tampering in the league in addition to the NBA's shutdown. We drink beers that were given to us by Modern Hops, who was our guest on the last episode. Those are from Cherry Street Brewing (Atlanta metro), Ology (Tallahassee), and Schoolhouse Brewing (Atlanta metro). The coronavirus is discussed. Cheers and blessings to all because of it!
On this week's episode, we sit down with Eric Levin from Modern Hops Distribution Co. to talk about being a boutique craft beer distributor in the State of Georgia. We discuss how he got his start in distribution, what makes Modern Hops different, how he chooses who to partner with, and so much more. We drink an amazing variety of beers--and a killer mead--on this episode and preview the upcoming Back to the Juice Beer Festival on Sat., March 28, 2020, at the Lost Druid Brewery in Avondale Estates, which Modern Hops is organizing!
Bottleshare founder Christopher Glenn lives to help those in need Last week we sat down at Bottleshare Benefit Bash Vol. 1 to talk with Bottleshare founder Christopher Glenn as well as his collaboration partners Trey Sinclair of Dry County Brewing and Sean O'Keefe of Pontoon Brewing. Chris' story is pretty amazing, after a serious accident left him unable to return to his previous career his former boss (Sinclair) shared an idea he had for "The Bottleshare." Chris was excited, ran with it, and has grown it into something much bigger than the original idea. Bottleshare's motto is Raising Glasses, Raising Hopes and their mission is to help those in the craft beverage industry that face hardships that pose a financial burden. At the Benefit Bash, Chris presented a check for $15,000 to Jennifer Barnes, widow of Modern Hops co-founder Philip Barnes. One of the ways the organization raises funds is through collaboration beers. Dry County was Bottleshare's first collaboration partner and have partnered with them on other beers as well. More collaborations are coming up from breweries like Atlanta's New Realm and New Orleans' Urban South. Although slightly delayed due to some medical needs, early this year Glenn will embark on his #RGSA2020 tour. That's Raising Glasses, Saving Asses; a slight spin on the core slogan. RGSA will take Bottleshare across the US with stops in New Orleans and Denver already scheduled. The mission is to raise awareness of the organization, brew up some collaborations, and find partners for their new Bottleshare Collective. Talking with Barrel Culture and Une Année/ Hubbard's Cave at one of the Southeast's best beer fests Recently one of the best beer festivals in the Southeast descended on Atlanta, GA (OK, technically Chamblee). I'm sure I'm a bit biased with it being on my home turf, but when you have nearly 70 highly regarded breweries from around the country bring out their best IPAs, Sours, Stouts, Pilsners, and Meads it's going to be a great party. In addition to Barrel Culture and Une Année/ Hubbard's Cave, breweries like Carton, Civil Society, Horus, Old Nation, and The Answer were also pouring. Blue Pants even had a Pilsner on slow pour, and if you're a regular listener you know we're loving that right now. Barrel Culture's head brewer Paul Wasmund joined us to talk about what's coming up at their brewery. One of Wasmund's goals when joining Barrel Culture in late 2018 was to introduce clean beers alongside their delicious sour beers, which they launched just before the festival. Wasmund also talks about the addition of spontaneously fermented beers and brett Saisons, and we get his thoughts on superheroes. Jerry Nelson, the founder of Hubbard's Cave and Une Année, has quite a story. He initially launched Une Année with a focus on classic Belgian Ales, but consumers didn't want classic Belgian Ales. Coupled with a few other hurdles, his brewery nearly went bankrupt. Nelson decided to create a new identity in Hubbard's Cave to offer more popular beer styles. Soon, he'll open a new brewery in Niles, IL. In a development with a replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. No kidding. None of this would have been possible without the hard work of the guys from distributor Modern Hops. Partners Philip Barnes and Michael Lowenberg (pictured bottom center in the above photo) talk about their unique approach to beer distribution and how they made the festival happen, as well as their support for the Georgia Transplant Foundation with the event's proceeds. If you are an IPA lover, you needed to be at Monday Night Brewing's Garage. The inaugural Day of the Juice Festival took place there, and while there were more than IPAs on tap, this was definitely a celebration of all things hoppy. We talked to two great IPA brewers from the East Coast. First up was Basil Lee from New York City's Finback. Next, we spoke to the crew from the Emerald Coast's (that's the Florida Panhandle) Idyll Hounds. Plus, we talked to the crew behind this event from Modern Hops. We're broadcasting from Monday Night Brewing's Garage this week. Does your homebrew blonde ale continually have an underripe apple taste? Or is there a rancid butter taste in your porter? Does your IPA taste more like band-aids than tropical hops? This is the show for you. BJCP Grand Master beer judge Mike Castagno was an award-winning homebrewer before going pro at Decatur, GA's Twain's Brewpub. And BJCP Certified beer judge Nate Watkins is another award-winning prolific homebrewer. We talk about some of the mistakes homebrewers make, the off-flavors that can crop up, and how to fix them. We discuss some of the things you can do before you brew to minimize the risk of off-flavors as well as sharing some details on common off-flavors such as acetaldehyde, diacetyl, chlorophenol, fusel / alcoholic, DMS (dimethyl sulfide), esters, oxidation, and the much-dreaded skunking. Mike and Nate also share some info on homebrew clubs and ways you can train your palate to recognize off-flavors. Plus, we talk to Michael Lowenberg of Modern Hops about the upcoming Day of the Juice festival.

Phillip Barnes and Eric Levin were beer traders at first. One day, they realized that the distribution system in Georgia was broken, and worked to find a better way to do it. That idea is now Modern Hops. We talk to Philip, Eric and Michael Lowenberg about the craft beer scene in Georgia, what they are doing to change it, and what's been different since SB85. We also get a chance to talk to Jekyll Brewing's Josh Rachel about Southern Juicy Juice, and Field Hoperative Brian Hewitt reviews a revival of an old school cigar.
