This week, we're talking about the 1933 kidnapping of prominent Atlanta banker James King Ottley Sr. during the height of the Great Depression, when ransom kidnappings were rising across the country. After being abducted outside his Buckhead estate and forced to write his own ransom note, Ottley convinced 17-year-old accomplice Pryor Bowen to release him. Want to support this podcast? Luxury homebuyers in metro Atlanta are shifting their priorities. Square footage and prestige addresses are no longer the primary drivers. Instead, buyers are focusing on livability, location and long-term functionality. Drew Clough, chief operating officer of Waterford Homes, joins Host Carol Morgan on Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio to discuss why that shift is reshaping the high-end custom home market and how Waterford Homes is differentiating through communication, consistency and disciplined project management in today's competitive luxury homebuilding environment. Elevated Luxury Defined by Process, Not Just Product Waterford Homes has established itself in Atlanta's luxury custom home market by prioritizing the systems behind a successful build rather than relying on a signature architectural style. The builder's competitive advantage comes from consistency, communication and disciplined execution at every stage of construction. Buyers are not only evaluating finishes and floor plans; they are also evaluating how a builder manages the full construction experience, including timelines, trade partners and expectations throughout the process. Those relationships also play a central role in how the company maintains quality and accountability across multiple high-end custom homes at once. High-Demand Atlanta Neighborhoods Waterford Homes continues to work across some of Atlanta's most established luxury submarkets, where demand is shaped as much by lifestyle priorities as by location alone. Each neighborhood attracts a different type of luxury buyer, but all share one common thread: limited supply in highly desirable settings. Chastain Park remains one of Atlanta's most consistently sought-after neighborhoods. Its combination of park access, larger lot sizes and convenient proximity to Buckhead and the airport drives long-term demand. Buyers continue to prioritize the balance between in-town convenience and residential privacy, keeping the area competitive even amid shifting market conditions. Milton offers a very different version of luxury living. Instead of intown walkability, it emphasizes scale, privacy and estate-style properties with strong suburban infrastructure. Clough compares the area's feel to Greenwich, Connecticut, noting its large estates, equestrian influence and established suburban amenities that appeal to buyers seeking space without sacrificing access to Alpharetta and surrounding commercial centers. Virginia-Highland continues to attract buyers who prioritize character and walkability over lot size. The neighborhood blends historic homes with newer luxury infill projects, creating a unique mix of architectural styles near Piedmont Park, Midtown and the Atlanta Beltline. This combination of charm and urban access keeps demand steady, particularly among buyers who want a more connected, in-town lifestyle. Rosemary: A Boutique Community Designed Around Lifestyle One of Waterford Homes' most anticipated projects is Rosemary, a nine-home enclave in Milton near downtown Crabapple and Alpharetta. Clough said, “Rosemary is going to be the most incredible community that we've ever developed.” The neighborhood will feature one-acre-plus homesites and high-end custom residences designed for modern luxury living, including four-car garages, main-level primary suites and expansive outdoor spaces. But beyond design, the area has something increasingly rare in suburban Atlanta: walkability. Clough said, “You're literally right there where you can walk downtown and find lots of restaurants and things to do [in Crabapple].” Build-on-Your-Lot Growth & the Importance of Starting With the Right Team Build-on-your-lot construction continues to gain traction across metro Atlanta, especially in teardown-heavy intown neighborhoods and high-demand suburban areas. As available land becomes more limited in established luxury markets, more homeowners are choosing to purchase existing lots and design custom homes around them. That trend is also exposing a common misstep in the early stages of the process. Clough notes that many homeowners begin with architectural design before fully understanding what their site can realistically support. Clough said, “They should consult with a custom home builder first, not an architect.” That sequencing matters because site-specific factors often shape what is possible long before design details come into play. Lot conditions, grading, tree preservation requirements, setbacks and municipal permitting rules can all significantly influence both design feasibility and overall budget. What Defines Luxury at the $3 Million Price Point Today At the $3 million price point and above, luxury homebuyers in metro Atlanta are prioritizing how a home functions in daily life just as much as how it looks on day one. Builders are responding by investing in both visible and structural elements of the home. High-end finishes, custom cabinetry and detailed millwork remain important, but buyers are also placing greater value on what happens behind the walls. That includes insulation, soundproofing, upgraded framing and other structural enhancements that improve comfort and long-term performance. Outdoor living continues to play a central role in luxury design, especially as homeowners increasingly use their properties as full-time retreats rather than occasional residences. Covered living areas, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces and integrated pools now function as extensions of the interior space rather than secondary amenities. Clough also highlights a growing demand for flexibility in home design, particularly as more buyers plan for multigenerational living or long-term household adaptability. A More Selective Luxury Buyer As inventory in prime locations tightens, the distinction between a strong site and a compromised one has become more pronounced in buyer decision-making. Clough said, “I've seen some incredible homes on B-minus lots having difficulty selling.” By contrast, homes on well-located, premium lots continue to outperform the broader market. These properties often generate stronger interest early in the listing process and, in many cases, attract multiple offers when priced appropriately. Clough said, “My goal is for us to be the top luxury homebuilding company in Atlanta.” By focusing on communication, consistency and disciplined execution, Waterford Homes treats luxury homebuilding as both a technical process and a client experience. In Atlanta's evolving luxury market, that process-driven approach continues to shape how buyers evaluate both builders and communities. To learn more about Waterford Homes, visit WaterfordHomes.com. On this episode of The Ash Said It show, Ash Brown sat down with Prince Patel, the founder of Bite More, to discuss the rapid growth of his unique restaurant brand. Since immigrating to North America less than a decade ago, Patel has successfully built and scaled multiple concepts. Bite More is his latest venture, designed to fill a specific market gap: high-quality Halal American Italian comfort food. Bite More stands out by offering a menu that combines mainstream favorites with Halal dietary standards. Patel explained that Halal refers to meat prepared according to ethical, clean, and specific Islamic guidelines. By creating a Halal Italian-American fusion menu, he has built a space where cultural inclusivity meets everyday comfort food. This allows diverse groups of diners to enjoy the same table without compromising their values or dietary needs. The menu features a diverse range of items designed for maximum flavor and quality. For those visiting for the first time, Patel recommended signature dishes like the Oklahoma Onion Smash Burger, made with clean Halal beef smashed with sweet caramelized onions and signature sauce. Another must-order is the Cajun Alfredo Pasta, a rich, creamy dish with a bold kick served with garlic toast. The Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich also stands out, featuring crispy, spiced chicken tenders topped with cooling slaw and pickles. After finding success in Buckhead, Patel strategically chose Duluth, Georgia, for the first expansion. Duluth is known for its vibrant, diverse food scene, making it the perfect environment for a brand focused on cultural inclusivity. The community response has been exceptional, fueling plans for further growth. Patel's vision for the next few years focuses on scaling and franchising. He aims to make Bite More a household name that represents a commitment to quality and community. One thing people often overlook about running a fast-growing restaurant brand is the intense operational precision required. Patel emphasized that maintaining high-quality standards across multiple locations demands unwavering dedication and a strong foundational team. Top Stories for January 10th Publish Date: January 10th PRE-ROLL: Kia Mall of Georgia From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Saturday, January 10th and Happy Birthday to Rod Stewart I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by Gwinnett KIA Mall of Georgia. Affordability a top concern as lawmakers prepare for Georgia legislative session Srim Academy to host series of free seminars for young parents Christkindl Market drove 77% increase in downtown Lawrenceville visitors All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: EAGLE THEATRE STORY 1: Affordability a top concern as lawmakers prepare for Georgia legislative session When Georgia lawmakers head back to the Capitol next week, it’s all about affordability—or at least that’s the plan. House Speaker Jon Burns isn’t mincing words: “We’re laser-focused on making life affordable,” he said Wednesday, pointing a finger at property taxes for crushing the dream of homeownership. “For too many families, it’s slipping out of reach. We’ve got to fix that.” Meanwhile, Senate Republicans are eyeing income taxes. A committee led by Sen. Blake Tillery wants to nix the 5.19% tax for individuals earning under $50,000 (or $100,000 for couples) and eventually scrap it altogether by 2032. But affordability isn’t just about taxes. Rising medical costs? A mess. The end of federal health insurance subsidies? A looming crisis. Burns says the House will tackle health care, focusing on keeping doctors in Georgia by expanding residency programs. STORY 2: Srim Academy to host series of free seminars for young parents Srim Academy, a Montessori school in Norcross, is kicking off a series of free seminars for young parents—because, let’s face it, parenting is hard. Topics? Everything from potty training and screen time battles to fostering independence and getting kids to actually move their bodies. The first session, “Fostering Your Child’s Independence: Lemonade, Ladybugs and Learning,” happens Saturday, Jan. 31, at 10:30 a.m. at 5511 Williams Road. Expect 90 minutes of practical advice, hands-on activities (think crafts and cooking), and maybe even a few lightbulb moments. Led by Srim’s seasoned faculty and guests from Gwinnett Building Babies’ Brains, it’s all about building confidence—for kids and parents. Bonus: giveaways! Details? Visit www.srimacademy.com or call 678-808-9813. STORY 3: Christkindl Market drove 77% increase in downtown Lawrenceville visitors Lawrenceville’s first year hosting the Atlanta Christkindl Market? A total game-changer. Nearly 371,000 people visited the market during its debut season downtown—more than double the attendance from its Buckhead days, even with fewer open days. And here’s the kicker: 159,500 of those visitors wandered over to the Lawrenceville Square, boosting local restaurants and shops by 77% compared to 2024. Free parking, shuttles, and a glowing Winterlight Walk helped draw crowds, with visitors from 48 states. Downtown businesses saw sales jump 5–30%, and vendors reported 20–30% higher sales than the previous year. The collaboration between the city and Gwinnett County was key, with County Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson adding, “This event showed what’s possible when partnerships thrive.” Lawrenceville’s officially on the holiday map. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets STORY 4: 2026 Beer Chaser 5K Registration is open Whether you’re a speed demon or a beer-loving stroller, the Beer Chaser 5K is calling your name. And the party doesn’t stop there—StillFire Brewing is hosting an after-party with live music, food trucks, and 25 beers on tap. Recognized as one of Georgia’s Best Vacation Destinations, the resort is leaning into its legacy while planning some exciting upgrades for 2026. Last year was packed: a new chapel and garden for weddings, a free summer concert series, the return of Magical Nights of Lights, and even a lantern festival that drew 4,500 people. The GoGaddis Real Estate Radio Show with Cleveland (Cleve) Gaddis | Listener Q&A / Real Questions Presented by Modern Traditional Realty Group www.moderntraditionsrealty.com As the 2025 holiday season hits full swing, the dinner table conversation in Metro Atlanta is dominated by three big questions: Can I find a home? Can I afford it? And is it time to stop renting?. In this 12-minute segment of The Go Gaddis Real Estate Radio Show, we move past the noise and look at the actual data. While many have been "waiting for a crash," the Housing Market in late 2025 is telling a different story—one of moderating growth and significant new opportunities for those ready to move. The "Bare Shelves" Myth: Learn why there have been more than one million homes on the market for six straight months—a milestone not seen since 2019. For Atlanta buyers, this means more options and less frantic competition. The Affordability Shift: We break down the latest trends showing that while buying isn't "easy," easing mortgage rates and moderating price growth are finally making monthly payments hundreds of dollars lower than earlier this year. The Rent Vs Buy Identity Question: Why the choice between renting and owning is often an "identity question" rather than a math problem. We discuss whether you are in a season of "optionality" (renting) or "readiness" (buying). Future Projections: Insight into why Fannie Mae experts project home prices will continue to rise at a normal pace through 2029, making "waiting for a drop" a risky financial strategy. If you've hit pause on your home search due to market fatigue, this episode provides the data-backed clarity you need. Whether you are a first-time buyer in Decatur or a seller in Buckhead, we help you align your housing choices with your life's current "identity season". When hope is tied only to a desired outcome, disappointment becomes inevitable. Katherine Wolf knows this truth more personally than most. At just 26, with a newborn in her arms and a lifetime ahead of her, she suffered a massive and unexpected stroke that changed everything.Today, through her writing, speaking, and nonprofit ministry Hope Heals, Katherine invites others into a deeper, sturdier hope—one that can withstand even the darkest valleys. On today's show, she joins us to share her journey: how suffering reshaped her faith, her understanding of God's goodness, and even her family's finances.A Life Forever ChangedIn 2008, without warning or symptoms, Katherine experienced a catastrophic brainstem stroke caused by a congenital condition she never knew she had—an arterial venous malformation (AVM). Overnight, she went from fully able-bodied to fighting for her life.A 16-hour surgery saved her, but her new reality included significant impairments. Today, she uses a wheelchair, has facial paralysis, reduced function in her right hand, and additional physical limitations. Still, she radiates joy and purpose.“I did live—and I'm doing great,” she says with her trademark resilience.Katherine describes the stroke as the moment “the pebble hit the metal”—a collision between everything she had learned about Jesus and the hardest chapter of her life.Years of Scripture, sermons, prayer, and discipleship prepared her for a moment she never imagined. “This is no longer a drill,” she remembers telling herself. Her long walk with Christ, though imperfect, had built a foundation strong enough to stand when everything else fell apart. In her memoir Hope Heals, she writes that suffering is not the end of the story—but the beginning of a new one. Christian hope does not deny pain; it declares that pain will not have the final word.Katherine's more recent book, Treasures in the Dark, draws from Isaiah 45:3—God's promise to give “hidden treasure” in the shadows of our lives so we might know Him more deeply.“If we must walk through darkness—and we all do at some point—why not gather the treasure God has placed there?” she asks. In other words, don't waste your pain. Let God use it to form you, deepen you, and show you His faithfulness in ways comfort never could.Hope Heals: A Ministry Born from SufferingOne of the greatest treasures to emerge from Katherine's hardship is Hope Heals, the nonprofit she and her husband, Jay, founded.Hope Heals CampTheir flagship outreach is a fully scholarship-supported summer camp for families affected by disability. Guests experience rest, community, and the love of Christ through what Katherine calls “inter-ability community”—people with and without disabilities sharing life together.Volunteers and families leave forever changed. The joy is contagious.Mend Coffee ShopIn Atlanta's Buckhead neighborhood, Hope Heals also operates Mend, a universally accessible coffee shop that employs people with disabilities and creates a space where everyone belongs.Katherine describes both initiatives as “glorious,” a word she uses often—and always with delight. The Financial Realities of SufferingMedical crises don't just affect the body; they often reshape a family's finances. Katherine knows this firsthand. When disability or sudden illness enters a story, she notes, “the finances can be ravaged.” Many families drain savings, take on debt, or scramble to fund treatments and therapies. But Katherine also speaks about “invisible wheelchairs”—the unseen burdens that hold people back. Financial instability, she says, can be one of the most crippling. Her encouragement? Everyone carries some kind of hardship. You are not alone. God gives us community and wisdom so we don't walk these valleys in isolation. For Katherine, surrender has become a central theme of her spiritual life, including how she views money.“Surrender is relief,” she says. “It's not God binding us up—it's letting Him take the wheel.”This posture doesn't magically erase financial challenges, but it reframes them. It anchors us in trust rather than fear. And it reminds us that provision comes from God, not our own strength.Hope for Anyone Facing UncertaintyKatherine's story speaks to those walking through overwhelming medical challenges—but her final encouragement reaches everyone, regardless of circumstances.Trusting God means you don't have to live afraid of what may happen next.Your circumstances may feel anything but okay, but when Christ lives in you, the deepest good in your life is already secure.“The good things of God,” she says, “are not external—they're inside of you when you know Him.”That truth allows us to face uncertainty with confidence, surrender our financial fears, and discover a hope that holds—no matter the storm.Learn MoreTo explore Katherine's ministry or support her work, visit HopeHeals.com.If you're near Atlanta, stop by Mend coffee shop in Buckhead—a place of belonging, beauty, and community. Katherine will also be speaking at the upcoming Kingdom Advisors Conference, where thousands of financial professionals gather to grow in biblical wisdom and stewardship. John Berry ready to kick off 29th annual Christmas tour in Sugar Hill 'A welcome addition' — Popular Christkindl Market coming to Lawrenceville for the holiday season Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, resigns house seat All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: Kia Mall of Georgia - DTL HOLIDAY STORY 1: John Berry ready to kick off 29th annual Christmas tour in Sugar Hill John Berry’s not making it home for Thanksgiving—again. The country music legend is kicking off his 29th annual Christmas with John Berry tour at the Eagle Theatre in Sugar Hill, where he and his band will spend the week rehearsing before the first show on Friday, Nov. 28. The tour hits 17 cities, including Macon, the only stop that’s been on the schedule every single year. “Even during COVID, the mayor made sure we kept the streak alive,” Berry said. The show? A mix of his hits (Your Love Amazes Me, Standing on the Edge of Goodbye) and Christmas classics from his O Holy Night album. STORY 2: 'A welcome addition' — Popular Christkindl Market coming to Lawrenceville for the holiday season One of the country’s top Christmas markets has found a new home—right in Lawrenceville. The Atlanta Christkindl Market, a German-style holiday tradition that draws up to 160,000 visitors each year, kicks off on Black Friday and runs through Christmas Eve at the Lawrenceville Lawn. Think handcrafted gifts, authentic German food and drinks, a 150-foot Christmas tree, a Ferris wheel, and family-friendly entertainment. After four years in Buckhead, the market outgrew its space. “This is a perfect fit,” said Mayor David Still. “It’s another reason to celebrate the season in our city.” STORY 3: Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, resigns house seat Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene dropped a bombshell Friday—she’s stepping down from her seat in the House. Her last day? January 5. The announcement came via a video she posted on X (formerly Twitter) Why now? What’s next? There’s plenty of room for speculation. Greene’s exit is bound to shake things up. One thing’s for sure: the political world will be buzzing about this one for a while. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets - SUGAR HILL HOLIDAY STORY 4: Police: Hit-and-run driver allegedly abandoned injured passenger after accident A horrifying crash in Duluth earlier this month left a passenger fighting for their life—and the driver now facing a stack of charges. Samuel Contreras-Garcia, who police say fled the scene on foot, has been charged with felony hit-and-run, reckless driving, and more. The crash happened around 5:30 a.m. on Nov. 16 at Buford Highway and Duluth Highway. Officers found a mangled silver sedan wedged between poles, and the unrestrained front-seat passenger had been thrown from the car. Critically injured, they were rushed to the hospital. Surveillance footage allegedly shows Contreras-Garcia abandoning the wreck without calling 911. He was arrested two days later. STORY 5: Gwinnett DA's Office recognizes law enforcement The Red, Blue, and You event wasn’t the only moment of gratitude for Gwinnett’s law enforcement. The District Attorney’s Office hosted its own appreciation ceremony, shining a spotlight on the bravery and service of officers, deputies—and even a nurse—who’ve gone above and beyond. Held at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, the event honored more than a dozen individuals from six agencies. “When lives are on the line, having people like this step up—it’s everything,” said DA Patsy Austin-Gatson. We’ll be right back. Break 3: Sugar Hill Ice Skating Rink Final STORY 6: GCPS announces 2026 graduation schedule Gwinnett County Public Schools just dropped the 2026 graduation schedule, and it’s a mix of tradition and big arena vibes. Phoenix High kicks things off on May 14 at Lawrenceville Lawn, while Duluth and Discovery close it out on Memorial Day, May 25, at Gas South Arena. Most schools will stick with Gas South Arena for their ceremonies, but a few—like Central Gwinnett, Brookwood, Parkview, and Mill Creek—are keeping it old-school with graduations at their home stadiums. STORY 7: Gwinnett's tag offices moving to new hours of operation in 2026 Starting in 2026, Gwinnett’s tag offices are trimming their hours—closing 30 minutes to an hour earlier each day. Beginning Jan. 1, offices will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Right now, they stay open until 5:30 p.m. most days and 6 p.m. on Wednesdays. Why the change? Tax Commissioner Denise Mitchell pointed to the growing use of self-service kiosks—16 in total, with three available 24/7. “We want to make things easier,” she said. Oh, and heads up: all tag offices, the main office, and the call center will close at noon on Dec. 5 for system updates. Back to normal Dec. 8. The Rickey Smiley Morning Show starts with a headline-grabbing lawsuit as Usher sues longtime collaborator Bryan-Michael Cox and several business partners over an unpaid $700,000 balance from a $1.7 million loan intended for a Buckhead restaurant project that never materialized. Usher, who has worked with Cox on classics like Burn and U Got It Bad, is now seeking up to $4.9 million in damages after court documents allege the loan money was misused rather than applied to the property purchase as agreed. The crew then turns to disturbing new allegations against Motown legend Smokey Robinson, as a male accuser joins existing civil cases claiming Robinson sexually assaulted him in 2022—accusations Robinson denies. These lawsuits add to a growing list of Jane and John Doe filings that have put Robinson under intense public scrutiny. Finally, the show dives into breaking political news as the House votes overwhelmingly to release the long-sealed Epstein documents, with a near-unanimous 427–1 vote. The remaining paperwork is expected to move quickly through the Senate before heading to the President’s desk, raising anticipation for what high-profile names or communications might emerge once the files become public. ===== MDJ Script/ Top Stories for October 24th Publish Date: October 24th Commercial: From the BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Friday, October 24th and Happy Birthday to Kevin Kline I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal Mableton candidates share plans to tackle homelessness amid rising concerns Turnout remains steady in Week 2 of early voting Brazilian steakhouse coming to Cumberland Mall Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on sweet tooths All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: Ingles Markets 2 STORY 1: Mableton candidates share plans to tackle homelessness amid rising concerns Homelessness is a growing issue in Cobb County, and Mableton, as the county’s newest city, isn’t immune. As of February, five homeless encampments were identified in the area. Local resources like Family Life Restoration Center and HOPE Family Resource Center are working to help, but the challenge is complex. In August, a former Wingate Hotel near Six Flags was converted into housing for homeless veterans, despite pushback from Mableton’s City Council. With two contested City Council races on the Nov. 4 ballot, candidates were asked how they’d address homelessness. District 2 Michael McNeely emphasized collaboration: “We need an asset map to identify resources and capacity, especially as the weather changes. I’ll work with elected officials, churches, and nonprofits like Family Life Restoration to create a sustainable plan.” Incumbent Dami Oladapo focused on partnerships and community action: “We can expand resources with groups like HOPE Family Resource Center and Family Life Restoration. But it’s not just about institutions—neighbors coming together to collect blankets or food makes a real impact. Long-term, we need attainable housing and neighborhood revitalization.” District 4 Patricia Auch acknowledged the complexity: “We direct people to nonprofits like MUST Ministries and Sweetwater Mission, but homelessness often involves mental health or substance abuse issues. It’s not just about finding a home—it’s about addressing deeper problems.” Cassandra Brown, meanwhile, stressed connection over criminalization: “We need to link unhoused residents to local nonprofits already doing the work, like Family Life Restoration and HOPE. MUST Ministries is great, but it’s too far—over two hours by bus. We need solutions closer to home.” Homelessness remains a tough, multifaceted issue, but candidates agree: it’ll take compassion, collaboration, and creativity to make progress. STORY 2: Turnout remains steady in Week 2 of early voting Early voting in Cobb County is off to a slow but steady start, with just under 6% of eligible voters casting ballots so far. Monday and Tuesday saw the second- and third-highest turnout days, with 1,410 and 1,495 voters, respectively. Friday still holds the top spot with 1,728 votes. Some locations, like the Cobb Elections Main Office in Marietta, are seeing spikes—554 voters showed up Tuesday. East Cobb’s Government Service Center also had its busiest days, with 321 voters Monday and 329 Tuesday. Early voting runs through Oct. 31 at seven locations countywide, with hours varying by day. Election Day is Nov. 4. STORY 3: Brazilian steakhouse coming to Cumberland Mall Fogo de Chão, the beloved Brazilian steakhouse known for its tableside meat service, is heading to Cumberland Mall, taking over part of the old Sears site. This week, the Cobb Board of Commissioners gave the green light for the mall’s site plan update, paving the way for an 8,670-square-foot restaurant between Dick’s Sporting Goods and Cobb Parkway. If you’re unfamiliar, Fogo de Chão is all about churrasco—Brazilian barbecue where meats are roasted over an open flame and carved right at your table. Guests use a green-and-red disc to signal servers: green means “keep it coming,” red means “I’m stuffed.” This will be Georgia’s third Fogo location, joining Buckhead and Dunwoody. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We’ll be right back. Break: Ingles Markets 2 STORY 4: Cobb School Board vice chair ordered to repay $225,000 in lawsuit settlement On Wednesday, a Fulton County judge ordered Cobb School Board Vice Chair John Cristadoro to pay $225,000 to Sagicor Life Insurance Company after allegations of misappropriated funds. According to court documents, Cristadoro’s marketing firm, Alliance Activation, received $250,000 from Sagicor to fund an advertising campaign. Of that, $225,000 was meant for a third-party vendor, Sunburst Entertainment, but the money never made it there. Instead, it was allegedly used to cover Alliance’s operating expenses—and even Cristadoro’s personal credit card bills. Judge Wesley Tailor ruled Cristadoro must pay $186,000 within three days, followed by $500 monthly payments until the full amount is settled. Cristadoro denied wrongdoing, calling the settlement a business negotiation and accusing critics of “manufacturing outrage.” However, parents and activists, including Heather Tolley-Bauer of Watching the Funds Cobb, pushed for transparency, opposing Cristadoro’s attempt to seal the settlement details. If Cristadoro defaults, the unpaid balance will accrue 10% interest until paid. STORY 5: OUT AND ABOUT: 5 things to do this weekend in Cobb County — Oct. 24 - 26 Cobb Fall Festival of Fun This Saturday, the Fall Festival of Fun is back at Jim R. Top Stories for October 18th Publish Date: October 18th From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Saturday, October 18th and Happy Birthday to Chuck Berry I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by Gwinnett KIA Mall of Georgia. Sugar Rush takes over Sugar Hill this weekend Glow 5K set for Nov. 9 at Lanier Islands Resort Duluth wins national award for downtown selfie stations All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: KIA MOG STORY 1: Sugar Rush takes over Sugar Hill this weekend Sugar Hill’s biggest bash is back this weekend, and it’s got a little something for everyone—art, music, family chaos (the good kind), and that small-town community vibe you can’t fake. Saturday? Start with the 5K Color Run at 8 a.m. (registration’s at 7, if you’re ambitious). Then, from 10 to 6, downtown transforms into an art-lover’s dream: 100+ vendors, a pumpkin patch, live art demos, and even a biergarten for the grown-ups. Sunday keeps the fun rolling at noon with gold mining, aerial silks, animal shows, and—yes—a mascot dance-off. Because why not? STORY 2: Glow 5K set for Nov. 9 at Lanier Islands Resort Lanier Islands’ Magical Night of Lights is kicking off the holiday season with a festive twist—the Dashing Through the Glow 5K on Sunday, Nov. 9. Picture this: running (or walking, no judgment) through a wonderland of Christmas lights at dusk. Toy soldiers, candy canes, even pickleball-playing elves—it’s all there. The race starts at 5:45 p.m. and is capped at 1,500 participants, so don’t wait. Registration includes a cozy crewneck (or hoodie, if you upgrade), a finisher medal, and Santa bobblehead trophies for top runners. Proceeds? They go to the Georgia Mountain Food Bank. Holiday vibes for a good cause. STORY 3: Duluth wins national award for downtown selfie stations Duluth just snagged some national bragging rights, winning a Silver Circle Award for Graphic Design at the 2025 Savvy Awards. The ceremony? Held Sept. 4 at Planet Hollywood in Vegas—because where else would you celebrate creativity? The city’s Downtown Selfie Stations project stole the spotlight. These colorful, interactive signs scattered around downtown Duluth aren’t just for decoration—they’re an invitation. Snap a pic, share it online, and show off the city’s charm. Judges called it “fun, intuitive, and memorable.” Mayor Greg Whitlock summed it up: “This award reflects our commitment to connecting with the community in fresh, creative ways.” We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets STORY 4: A legacy of healing — Documentary tells ReCAST Lawrenceville’s journey through residents’ stories Four years ago, Lawrenceville landed a $5 million federal grant to launch ReCAST, a program aimed at building resilience and supporting mental health in the community. Since then? It’s been a lifeline for so many. To celebrate its impact, ReCAST just released a 17-minute documentary featuring three residents—Josiah Hardy, Success Bonds, and Nadia Hill—whose lives were changed by the program. Jobs, housing, counseling—it’s all there. Program manager Marcus Thorne says the work isn’t done. With the grant set to expire next year, the focus is on sustainability. STORY 5: Delta CEO: Employees who 'glorified' murder 'lost the right to serve our customers' Delta CEO Ed Bastian took the stage at the Gas South District in Duluth on Wednesday to talk leadership, but the conversation veered into controversy—specifically, the firing of a Delta flight attendant who celebrated Charlie Kirk’s murder on social media. The employee’s Facebook post, which read “good riddance,” sparked outrage. Two weeks later, they were fired. Bastian didn’t mince words: “When someone glorifies violence like that, they’ve lost the privilege of being a Delta employee. We serve everyone, no matter their views.” He also revealed Delta’s next big move: direct flights to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, through a new partnership with Riyadh Air. “It’s coming soon,” he teased. STORY 6: Lawrenceville to host Atlanta Christkindl Market The Atlanta Christkindl Market is packing up its twinkling lights and bratwurst and heading to Lawrenceville this December. After years in Buckhead, it’s found a new home at the Lawrenceville Lawn—bigger, better, and ready for more holiday magic. Think mulled wine, handmade ornaments, and that cozy, old-world German charm, all with a dash of Atlanta’s energy. Since 2016, this market has been a holiday favorite, drawing crowds from all over Georgia (and beyond). Opening Nov. 28 and running through Christmas Eve, it’s free to attend. So grab your scarf, your appetite, and maybe a little extra room in your heart for holiday cheer. STORY 7: Greater Atlanta Christian Grad Malcolm Brogdon Retires After 9 NBA Seasons Malcolm Brogdon, a Greater Atlanta Christian alum, shocked the basketball world Wednesday, announcing his retirement from the NBA after nine seasons. The timing? Just a month after signing a one-year, $3.3 million deal with the Knicks. “Today, I officially begin my transition out of basketball,” Brogdon shared with ESPN. “This game has demanded so much—mind, body, spirit—but it’s given me even more. I’m grateful to step away on my own terms, surrounded by family and friends.” The Knicks wished him well on social media: “Congrats on your retirement, Malcolm! Best of luck in your next chapter.” Brogdon’s career was nothing short of remarkable. A second-round pick in 2016, he defied expectations, earning Rookie of the Year with Milwaukee and Sixth Man of the Year with Boston. Injuries slowed him in recent years, but his impact never wavered. Before the NBA, he was a star at Virginia—ACC Player of the Year, two-time Defensive Player of the Year, and a first-team All-American. And let’s not forget his high school days: back-to-back state titles at GAC, Mr. Georgia Basketball, and two-time Daily Post Player of the Year. A legacy? Absolutely. Today is Thursday, September 11th and Happy birthday to Tom Landry I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. Netherworld set to open Sept. 19 Grieving parents urge self-protection as lawmakers struggle to rein in social media State tax collections on the rise in August Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on fast food All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: Ingles Markets 8 STORY 1: Netherworld set to open Sept. 19 This fall, Netherworld Haunted House in Stone Mountain is cranking the terror dial to 11. For its 29th season, the legendary haunt promises its longest, wildest, most jaw-dropping experience yet—think blockbuster effects, insane sets, and creatures straight out of your worst nightmares. Opening Sept. 19 for 35 nights of chaos, this year’s lineup includes “Monsters Attack!,” the grotesque carnival horrors of “Grendel’s Feast,” and the gut-wrenching “Oblivion: Return of the Mangler.” And the midway? Packed with creepy photo ops, escape games, and snacks like light-up cotton candy and “blood bags” for sipping. STORY 2: Grieving parents urge self-protection as lawmakers struggle to rein in social media Vincent LaBella didn’t realize his daughter was struggling until it was too late. Amaya, just a young teen, seemed like any other kid glued to her phone—always texting, always scrolling. But after hosting a small party at their Buckhead home in February, she died by suicide. Her Snapchat told the story: her friend group had turned on her, bombarding her with cruel messages for hours. TikTok’s algorithm didn’t help, feeding her sad songs and dark content, pulling her deeper. “It was poison,” LaBella said. He and other grieving parents are now urging lawmakers to rein in social media’s unchecked influence. STORY 3: State tax collections on the rise in August Georgia’s tax collections ticked up 3.2% in August compared to the same time last year, pulling in $2.41 billion, the state Department of Revenue said Tuesday. What’s behind the bump? Individual income tax receipts rose 1.8%, thanks to a nearly 10% drop in refunds. Sales tax collections also jumped—up 8.2%. But not everything climbed. Corporate income taxes, which make up a smaller slice of the pie, dropped 11%, down $4.5 million from last year. Meanwhile, gas and motor fuel taxes saw a modest 3.2% increase, adding $6.3 million to the state’s coffers. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. This fall, more than 12,777 students are enrolled—the second-highest fall enrollment in the school’s history and the 10th straight semester of growth. The freshman class alone boasts over 2,100 new faces, and international enrollment jumped 7.5%. Health sciences saw an 18% spike, with education close behind at 11%. As GGC marks 20 years, it’s come a long way—from 118 students to nearly 13,000. STORY 5: Gwinnett County Fair gears up for fun and funnel cakes The Gwinnett County Fair is back this week in Lawrenceville, bringing its usual mix of rides, livestock, and—you guessed it—funnel cakes. For over 70 years, it’s been a local tradition, and this year promises a few new twists. Bee Vang, now in her second year as operations manager, is ready for the chaos. New this year? Circus Incredible, featuring Lyric Wallenda of the famous Flying Wallendas, and a magic show with Captain Jim. Plus, a “Shopping Mall” packed with local vendors. Oh, and clear bags only—don’t forget.
