Barry and Abigail discuss Catching a Wave by Steve & Teresa and sample Kewalo's Cream Ale, CoCoWeizen, and Hop Island from Honolulu Beerworks in Honolulu, Hawaii. After a failed Hawaiian music scouting mission involving a fabulous live performance - but no CDs to take home! - by John Mahi, Barry purchased this album at Aloha Got Soul, a Honolulu-based record label championing new music and rare reissues from Hawaii! While there, he also purchased Lead Me to the Garden by ʻĀina, From These Shores (various artists), Lemuria by Lemuria, and BLUE by Dae Hon. We previously reviewed Maui Brewing Co. in Kihei, Hawaii, in our episode Hi (Peter Gabriel & Maui Brewing Co.). Abigail and Barry both relied heavily on Huapala Hawaiian Music and Hula Archives for background research and lyrics on this album! The opening of ‘Alekoki reminded Abigail of Jack Johnson music. This led to a discussion of slack-key guitar. Read more! The appearance of the humuhumunukunukuapua'a in My Little Grass Shack took Abigail back in time to the first time she ever heard of the humuhumunukunukuapua'a, in the song HUMUHUMUNUKUNUKUAPUA'A from the High School Musical 2 Original Soundtrack. Today Herlinda Heras' Maui Report takes the stage on this special podcast episode of Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon. Herlinda Heras called in from Maui where she was travelling for her birthday. She extended her stay and she is finally back today. Herlinda had the opportunity to report on Lahaina when her friend who lives there invited her. She was hesitant to visit, not wanting to be a looky-loo. However as she was invited, she got to see, “many beautiful things to do” there. Whereas the Sonoma County fires were huge, covering a broad area, Lahaina is rather small. A lot of old buildings from the 1700 burned and cannot be rebuilt. But the people on Maui are still operating their business and still need tourist traffic. Thanks to her very wide circle of friends, Herlinda was able to attend some exciting social events and visit some incredibly beautiful natural attractions. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. Herlinda has brought a beer called Mango Stickee Rice for tasting, which you can imagine is juicy and delicious. There is also a charity collaboration that lots of brewers are making, including Russian River Brewing Co. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and in Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Calling in on the phone from Maui is Leanne Pletcher, director of public relations from the Maui Tourism Bureau. They are working to encourage people to come and visit and enjoy the many parts of the island while Lahaina is healing. Visit Homerun Pizza, home of the Knuckleball! Fresh pizza dough made from scratch daily, la pizza è deliziosa! There are breweries and distilleries on Maui too, that Herlinda encourages people to visit. Maui Brewing Co. is in south Maui, near the coast. Up country, there are small towns and parks to visit as well as a pineapple farm. I had the immense pleasure and privilege to have an interview with CEO and co-founder Garrett Marrero of the Maui Brewing Company during my vacation in Hawaii. I don't wanna spoil much of the interview but I do wanna stress that it is truly remarkable, in an industry that is still evolving like ours in Canada to see such a magnificent rise in the microbrewery industry like Maui's. The presence, innovations, and influence that Maui Brewing has in their localized market is truly the stuff of wonders and I think that a lot of microbrews could learn a thing or two, not just in those respects, but in terms of sustainability as well.As promised, I will link the other interview delving into a bit more of the origins of the brewery from Hawaii's Best podcast. It's a great interview and I highly recommend listening to a few episodes if you plan on going to Hawaii (and, of course, get yourself a couple of 6 packs on the beach of Maui Brewing limited releases). Ron and I met Carisa Santana through her brother Brian. Brian has been on this show before in Be Your Authentic Self, episode 79 . During our annual trip to Maui we went to hear him play at Maui Brewing Co. (Delicious food by the way.) Little did we know that his sister, Carisa, would be performing with him. What a pleasure to listen to the beauty of their voices together. It was magical. Now here I am having my own conversation with Carisa. It was a joy. Carisa is a gifted songwriter, singer and performer. It seems to run in the family. How great is it that her brother inspires her? I got a lump in my throat when she expressed why. While she keeps a private side, sharing with those she trusts, she also loves listening to all kinds of people. She is genuinely interested, and will ask questions to get to know those she is having a conversation with. That usually happens at the gigs she plays. Starting from a very young age music has always been in her life.Thank you for being a part of the UY conversation. The Unabashed You website has a page for each guest of photos, quotes and a blog with embedded audio at unabashedyou.com. On today's episode, the hype train has left the station! Chicagoans are celebrating the arrival of QB1 Justin Fields and his record-breaking game. We give our reactions to the current state of the Bears and discuss why winning doesn't really matter the rest of the way as long as Fields continues to put up the numbers. Later, we debate where the Chicago Bulls stack up in the East and if they have what it takes to compete for a title. Does the health of Lonzo and the improved play of Patrick Williams get them there? Finally, Evan gives his week 10 waiver wire advice and Dan gives his picks for your weekend NFL parlays! Barry and Abigail discuss So by Peter Gabriel and sample Waimea Red, Pono Life, and POG Hazy IPA from Maui Brewing Co. in Kihei, Hawaii. Barry's first exposure to this album was the music video for Sledgehammer. Abigail's knowledge of Phil Collins and Genesis comes from the Tarzan soundtrack, which Phil Collins wrote. Barry incorrectly remembered that Sussudio by Phil Collins was knocked out of the Billboard Hot 100 #1 spot by Sledgehammer; in fact, it was Invisible Touch by Genesis that Sledgehammer replaced. Mercy Street was dedicated to Anne Sexton and inspired by her poem 45 Mercy Street. Aloha I'm Dustin Gomes. Avid Homebrewer for over 12 years. I've been the Oahu & Kauai Market Manager for Maui Brewing Co for almost 6 years now. I've always been passionate about cooking which led me into home brewing after my wife got me a Homebrew kit in 2009 and loved it ever since. I love all styles of beers especially paired with the right foods, some of my favorites include Weizenbocks, IPAs, and the occasional Pilsner on the golf course.

He moved to New York City to work for Michael Anthony at Gramercy Tavern, Untitled Restaurant and Studio Cafe at the Whitney Museum. He returned home to join the Pig & the Lady restaurant as the Chef de Cuisine. He reconnected with the local farming community and learned more about Vietnamese sensibility. He combined what he learned in New York City with the fast-growing interest in Vietnamese fusion cuisine. As the list of guests on this show grow, we wanted more people from not only the beer industry to pop in, but the film industry as well. Turns out that Ken has a friend that has worked on some pretty prestigious films; so what do we do with someone of that calibre? Make them review Monster Hunter with us, because yeah, we're "smart". Since Ethan is currently residing in Hawaii, the beverage department needed something easily accessible to everyone, so we went with Bikini Blonde Lager from Maui Brewing Co that turned out to be an almost too easy to drink beverage. Trust us, you'll need a couple coldies for this episode!

Episode 78 - Acts 3 and @mauibrewingco NITRO coconut Porter - You Gotta EARN it! Recently I read the book The Seven Decisions by @andyandrewsauthor and there was one sentence that really stuck with me so much that I think about it multiple times a day. He said, “Yes God said that he would feed the birds, but he doesn’t put the food in their nests, they have to go out and get it!” This is powerful and so true! God is ready to bless us beyond measure, he’s already provided everything for us, it’s up to us to go out and get it. It’s up to us to earn it! You want a fit body? You gotta earn it with exercise. You want that promotion at work? You gotta earn it with experience and expertise. You want that dream vacation home in an island paradise? You gotta earn that too! Even the lame man at the temple gates that Peter healed had to earn it. He took Peter’s hand and stood up. He was only healed once he stood up. He had to EARN IT! And after my 3.5 mile run today, I EARNED this @mauibrewingco Nitro Coconut Porter. The nitro in this brew adds an incredible layer of depth to a fantastic beer. I think the subtle flavors are more pronounced due to the finer carbonation of the nitro brew. It’s definitely one I wish we had on the mainland! As we head into this next week, let’s remember that yes, God provides for the birds... he provides everything they need...but they gotta earn it. He’s ready to bless you beyond measure. You just gotta earn it! Cheers friends - BBB

He is a man of charisma and talent that we lost only a few months ago. Eddie Money's music has the ability to bring a listener back to the most stereotypical of 80's proms. But he's much more than a few catchy tunes, he has a fascinating story and is someone who put in the work to get himself the success he had. A fun loving guy who was was more than happy to make friends and be kind to fans, everything led up to his tragic death this past September. Why not grab yourself a bottle of Two Tickets To Paradise from Crooked Stave and Maui Brewing Co to help us celebrate the life of this amazing rocker!

Garrett Marrero and Melanie Oxley poured determination and long hours into building Maui Brewing Company and were named 2017's Small Business Association's Small Business Persons of the Year. Guest Biography Garrett Marrero is Co-founder & CEO of Maui Brewing Co. Garrett makes sure to drink the local beer everywhere he travels. For him, great beer reveals elements of the personality of a place and, hopefully, reflects a vibrant part of the local economy. It’s also the reason why, on his first visit to Maui in 2003, Marrero refused to accept the fact that Maui’s “local” beer was actually made on the U.S. mainland and shipped to the island. An investment consultant with bachelor’s degrees in economics and international relations, and an associate’s degree in finance, he recognized an opportunity to create a niche product in an untapped market. A beach kid from San Diego, he also saw in Maui a chance to live near some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Garrett and his wife Melanie opened Maui Brewing Co. in January 2005 with a seven-barrel brewpub and 30 employees in the West Maui community of Kahana. Over a decade later, Maui Brewing is Hawai‘i’s largest craft brewer and one of its fastest-growing companies, employing more than 400 people, producing 53,000 barrels a year, and retailing its beers in 23 states and 10 countries. Keryl and Jamie drink Maui Brewing's CoCoNuT Porter with Keryl's sister Aalia Brown!
Born and raised in San Diego, Garrett Marrero completed a BA degree in Economics in 2000 at UC Davis in northern California. By 2005, after falling in love with Maui, Garrett started Maui Brewing Co. with the motivation of providing world class beer that is—as much as possible—locally sourced, community driven and sustainably produced. Less than 10 years later, thanks to Garrett's ethics and enthusiasm, Maui Brewing has achieved the status of Hawaii's largest craft brewery and has lived up to its tagline of offering "Handcrafted Ales and Lagers Brewed with Aloha." Highlights include: ►[1:11] Video footage and intro of new Kihei brewery and brewpub ►[2:52] Canned flagship beer and limited releases (Lahaina Town Brown and Lorenzini Double IPA) ►[4:35] Shipping to Canada and general distribution info ►[6:00] Why Maui is so magical and how Maui Brewing captures that magic ►[8:45] Eco-friendly six-pack holders and adding to the local economy ►[11:38] Who holds the title of Hawaii's largest craft brewery? ►[13:30] What makes Maui Brewing's suds so sustainable? ►[16:10] Importance of the ribbon cutting and blessing of the new brewery ►[17:58] One of the reasons why Garrett moved to Maui ►[18:47] Why Maui Brewing uses cans instead of bottles ►[21:34] Local ingredients, craft beverages, dietary options and staff fun factor ►[26:01] Who holds the title of craft beer capital—San Diego or Portland? ►[27:20] Why Garrett started Maui Brewing and where you can find it online ►[28:12] Why Jason drinks Maui Brewing, what makes Kihei Kölsch so great and how Maui Brewing offers 60 more styles locally throughout the year! Season 1, Episode 5 - This week, we chat about Session IPA and safely chug Beachwood BBQ Alpha Waves out of Long Beach, California, followed by Going in Blind! Then, Nagel’s non-beers: Sake and Cider. We start off the show this week with a sessionable IPA from Beachwood BBQ, Alpha Waves then dive into non-beer homebrews from Nagel. Beachwood BBQ & Brewing – Alpha Waves Alpha Waves from Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach, CA, is a described by the brewery as a “trickster of a ‘session IPA’ that will knock you down with surges of flavor and aroma.” “Session IPA” have been all the craze this year. Beachwood Brewing’s stands out from the rest in that it is a true session ale, clocking in at 3.8% ABV. It has a healthy malt backbone, and quite a big hop presence, even though it’s only 50 IBU. Feature: Homebrew – Greg‘s Homebrew Sake and Cider Greg’s Sake, named “Kamakazi Gang Bang” was an experiment to see how good a homebrew Sake can be. Much how Japanese WWII pilots would get tons of ass before their final flight, Nagel purchased a Sake kit from homebrewsake.com. Following the arduous broken English daily instructions, the rice/koji was soaked overnight, baked, cooled quickly, then fed it to the yeast. Every day, the amount doubles until the kit is finished. Once primary fermentation is complete, it’s racked into secondary, then tertiary after 30 days. After six months, it’s like fuel for a Japanese Zero, but mellows out over time with big vanilla, banana and stone fruit notes. Greg’s Sake in a Bottle of Mother Funker, with Dregs. We also sample Greg’s Cider, named “Cummin’s Cider,” that was ‘brewed’ easily from bringing a carboy up to Oak Glen’s Law’s Cider Mill. Step one: Sing The Sound of Music’s “The Hills Are Alive” while running through the apple orchards, dumping your sanitizer out of our carboy all over the ground. Next, add five crushed campden tabs to the carboy. Have the cider mill crush five gallons right into the carboy. Taste some to make sure it’s not gross. Pitch yeast after 24 hours (I used White Labs Old English Cider yeast). Add yeast nutrient twice daily while swirling and control temp to 68F. After primary, rack to secondary and wait 30 days. Improves considerably with age. Some people like to back-sweeten, which is gross. Save the trouble and buy the millions of sweet ciders available at the store. Feature: “Going In Blind…” We’re back for another round of “Going In Blind,” and this time, the beers were chosen and served up by Yvonne England. John wasn’t able to participate in the first round, since he “accidentally” saw the beer that was being served. Doh! Going In Blind, with Dale’s Pale Ale and Coconut Porter Ultimately, we find out that we’re drinking Dale’s Pale Ale from Oscar Blues, and Maui Brewing Co.’s Coconut Porter. We can’t stress how fun blind tasting is to do. Give it a try with your homies! Cheers, and we’ll see you next week!
