There was a time when Hasbro envisioned a cinematic universe. Battleship was a cog in that misguided wheel, an expensive one at that. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately for all us movie goers, Battleship sank before it even hit the seas. Critics and audiences alike found little joy or interest in a $200 million dollar blockbuster based on a slow-paced board game. To be fair, they were all correct. Battleship is a slog of a movie; and its nonsensical plot cannot be saved by the bombastic effects and action. Odds are that within minutes, you'll be sending an SOS to your TV to find something more entertaining. Now, sit back, arm your tastebuds with a Blind Pirate Blood Orange IPA from Monday Night Brewing, and don't promise any late night snacks if you can't deliver! Big Beer doesn't love you like craft beer does. We're back and we're ready to party.  We missed a Super Bowl show but we're recapping the game and, more importantly, the beer commercials this week.  On that note, Atlanta's Monday Night Brewing isn't happy about Coors' "Case of the Mondays" campaign.  Monday Night has been selling a mix pack with the name for many years now.  A cease and desist sent to Molson was replied with, essentially, "too bad, it's done now."  In Presidential news... tariffs.  So hot right now.  They're on, they're off, they're back on.  We can't keep up.  If they are on, they could hit your beer prices.  Proposed aluminum tariffs will impact packaging costs for most producers.  And if all these other tariffs go into place it could hit malt, hops, and who knows what else. Some sorta good news as one beer purchasing index shows sales aren't down as much as they have been.  It's a bummer when things been down less is good news.  With all the breweries closing their doors (this week, Alamo) we'll take any ray of sunshine we can get.Looking ahead, the folks at Total Wine shared some of their predictions for trends this year.  What do you think will be the hot item???Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Talking with and listening to smart people offers up a lot of perspective.  Guests  Peter Kiley is Brewmaster and Co-Owner of Monday Night Brewing, and is an award winning brewmaster, winemaker and distiller from Atlanta, Georgia. From Monday Night's inception, Kiley's creative vision, recipe development and multifaceted approach to alcohol production have set the groundwork for the brewery's worldwide notoriety. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was the bite-sized hero's attempt to elevate the stakes of his solo outings. With Kang—the MCU's big bad in waiting—as the film's central villain, it was meant to serve as a narrative intro for the next Avengers team up. Alas, that appears like it is not to be. Even before Jonathan Majors, the actor portraying Kang, ran afoul with the law, Quantumania's poor reviews and lagging box office flashed warning bells for Marvel.  Yes, it did earn $476.1 million at the box office, but that was down from the original's $518.9 million and its precursor's $623.1 million. Worse, Quantumania's 46% on Rotten Tomatoes is one of the worst scores the MCU has ever received. That critical drubbing is mostly deserved. Quantumania is an overlong and muddled CGI stew of half-baked ideas. It's never thrilling, rarely funny, and squanders its opportunity to make audiences dread what Kang will do to the newest Avengers. Instead, the dude couldn't even topple their tiniest hero. So much for that Dynasty of his. Now, sit back, take a bite out of a Space Lettuce Double IPA from Monday Night Brewing, and lookout for the little guy! Don't believe long-term tax planning is crucial? Here's a new way to think about it: picture having a slow leak in one of your tires. Well if you just noticed your tire looking a bit flat, then of course head to Costco for some free air, get that tire back up to pressure, and move on with your day – it's a quick and effective short-term solution. But also keep in mind that you'll have to eventually figure out a permanent solution, whether it's a plug or a new tire that'll last you for years. You could keep kicking the can down the road and opt for the quick top-off, but eventually that shortsighted fix will cost you more in wasted time than addressing the problem at hand properly. Similarly, if you're only looking for ways that you can pay as little tax as possible for this year alone, then you're missing the forest for the trees. We're pumped to be talking with our friend Sean Mullaney about minimizing tax liabilities on the podcast today. Sean, a fiduciary financial advisor who writes at FITaxGuy.com, will be delving into both year-end moves and longer-term tax strategies, discussing when he prefers traditional over Roth, upcoming changes to 401k accounts, the best retirement accounts for solopreneurs, and much more!   Want more How To Money in your life? Heartbeeps was meant to serve as the big screen launching pad for comedian Andy Kaufman. It backfired. Why? Well, it's a mostly nonsensical mess with few laughs, and it buries him under bizarre robot prosthetics. As a performer, Kaufman was known for his showmanship. Heartbeeps robs him of all that, instead turning him into a caricature of his own caricature. Val, the android he plays, is just a watered down Latka Graves from Taxi. Hence why this unfunny mishmash of a film bombed at the box office. On a budget of $12 million, it grossed barely over $2 million, scuttling future plans for its star. Kaufman and his co-stars deserved so much better. Creativity of all kinds fascinates me. I love seeing artists work and watching their final products take form. But most of all, I love to hear them talk about their processes, their frustrations, their joys. No matter the medium—design, food, or in this case beer—I like to glimpse the way their minds influence their work. Those moments of visibility bring a level of understanding of the creative process that I couldn't get to on my own.  When I worked at Monday Night Brewing here in Atlanta, I had the pleasure of spending time with several creatives. Among them was Peter Kiley, the brewery's brewmaster. On several occasions, a conversation about the latest beer release would turn into a deep dive into topics about life, creativity (or “producing,” as you'll hear Peter call it), and beer culture. Earlier this year, Monday Night dropped a spirit line, including gin, vodka, bourbon, rye, and an agave spirit. Hearing about this new venture, I wanted to talk to Kiley to hear his thoughts on this new realm. How did this transition differ from when he left the wine world to pursue brewing? In our conversation, we dive into his 16-year career making alcohol, why he likes to use the word “passion” sparingly, and his views of people who think they know it all.

Over 1,000 years ago, somehow, the Vikings were able to sail from Norway to Greenland. Without relying on any special instruments or any rudimentary technology, they were even able to reach as far as North America! Evidently they relied on the polarization of the sky, whales or birds they came into contact with, and the color of the ocean- quite remarkable. It seems unlikely that any sailors would be able to pull that off today with modern day technology. But that's often what it feels like as you're trying to get your financial ship pointed in the right direction. The vastness of options that lie before you feel overwhelming and the obstacles that we face are daunting, but we're here today to help you to: a) geolocate your financial situation, and b) determine what your next steps should be. BEERS: Pizza and beer are one of the best duos on earth. But using yeast from beer to make the some of the best pizza in the South?! Only the guys at Monday Night Brewing could think such a combo. One of Atlanta's most well-known brewing brands, Monday Night was founded on the notion that “weekends are overrated” (spoiler, we agree). Co-founder Joel Iverson and Brewmaster Peter Kiley join us to chat about the inception of Monday Night, their growth into Birmingham and Nashville, and taking home 27 separate awards this year. Of course, we also break down their journey into making pizza and their innovative idea of re-using yeast from the beer they've made on site. Can the Bills go all the way? We also break down some of the big trade deadline deals, and share the disappointment of both the Giants and the Patriots' no-shows. Craft Collaborations inspire Nappy Roots to open Atlantucky Brewing If you're a regular listener of the show then you've heard us talking with the Nappy Roots crew a few times before.  We met the guys back in 2017 as they brewed a collaboration with Monday Night Brewing, Front Porch Pale Ale, to go along with the album of the same name.  We were a young show at the time and thrilled to land an interview with the Grammy-nominated quartet.  Fish Scales, admittedly the most passionate craft drinker of the group, had a thirst for more beer knowledge.  We started chatted regularly about beer, attending festivals, and brewing in Scales' garage.  We may not be the typical friends for a couple of rappers, but never underestimate the power of beer. Originally, the plan was to brew collaboration beers to help promote the group.  Find a brewery near one of their upcoming shows and brew a beer with them.  Through these collaborations they discovered they really loved to brew beer and found many similarities with the music industry in pursuing your creative side.  The idea shifted from promotion to a business plan for Atlantucky Brewing.  Just like any brewer, the guys learned a lot through process and Skinny shares some tips and pitfalls for those that are looking to start a brewery.  Daily operations are handled by Skinny and Scales as they're in Atlanta, but B. Stille and Ron Clutch are behind the project as well, just from their old Kentucky home.  You'll see them at the brewery for special events and occasional concerts. Nappy Roots hasn't left the rap game to pursue brewing.  They balance a full schedule with studio time early in the week and they're back in the brewhouse later in the week.  They have had to cut back on their shows some, performing about two a month compared to 6ish prior to opening the brewery.  If you're only familiar with their old stuff, make sure to check out some of their newer music as well. The Atlantucky Brewing Taproom For the most part, taprooms are generally the same.  Atlantucky brings a special twist to their space adding an art gallery, event space and, of course, concert venue.  They're located just a stone's throw from Mercedes Benz stadium so if you're in town for a game or concert you've got a great spot to pre-game.  The location also attracts other artists to work at the brewery.  As Skinny says, the space allows them to be around other creatives and continue their passions while having a job.  Atlantucky Brewing 170 Northside Dr SW Suite 96 Atlanta, GA 30313 https://atlantucky.com/ The Beer List Atlantucky / Pontoon Maple Barrel-Aged Blondie Brownie  Atlantucky / Monday Night The Humdinger 2018 Wren House Valley House (American Lager) Good Word / Green Bench No Direction Home (French-Style Pilsner) Follow, Subscribe, Share! Eric, Wendy, and Shinjini follow Bloom across the streets of 1904 Dublin, as he steps out of his home on 7 Eccles Street and embarks upon his Odyssey in the Hibernian metropolis. They talk about Bloom's consumerism, purposeless wanderings in the city, and his random and sometimes unwelcome interactions with fellow Dubliners. Highlights include discussions of South Asian representation in season two of Bridgerton, Martha Clifford's dramatic letter, and tips on how to bet on horse racing (not really). Additionally, this episode again draws attention to the predatory urban male gaze. Recommended Beverages: Eric: Saporous (passion fruit and guava sour, in a floral-patterned can), by Three Taverns Brewery, Decatur, GA Wendy: Drafty Kilt (scotch ale), by Monday Night Brewing, Atlanta, GA Theme song: “Come on Over” by Scalcairn, via Blue Dot Sessions Special thanks to Carin Goldberg, whose cover design for the Gabler edition inspired our logo.
