On the latest episode of The CineSkinny, we take a look at the blistering Kneecap, an irresistible piece of myth-making from the firebrand Belfast rap trio of the same name. The film follows best friends, drug dealers and wannabe rappers Liam and Naoise (also known as Mo Chara and Móglaí Bap) as they avoid the Belfast ‘peelers' and a group of ex-paramilitaries out to get them before teaming up with local music teacher JJ, who helps hone their sound as their producer, DJ Próvai. The film's got wildly inventive visuals, a razor-sharp political message and enough drug-fulled energy to power the sun. Elsewhere on the show, we hear about Alien: Romulus, the 79th film in the Alien franchise (at least it feels like it), which helped kick off this year's Edinburgh Film Festival. And inspired by the rebellious antics of Kneecap, we discuss our favourite rebels in cinema, from Nae Pasaran to the hot fox in Disney's Robin Hood. TIMESTAMPS: What we've been watching: Longlegs and lots of Fringe shows (1:57) Alien: Romulus review (12:00) Kneecap review (19:41) Our favourite rebellions in film: Nae Pasaran, School of Rock, A Fistful of Dynamite, Robin Hood and Andor (45:55) Recorded at EHFM's Ground Floor HQ in Leith. For Scotland the men's Euros are over. We try and go beyond the football itself and look at the coverage of Scotland's games ,and if this latest set of defeats at a major competition tells us anything about our Scottish psyche. If the team lost the Tartan Army definitely won the hearts of the German people. What is so special about Scottish fans?It was the turn of the Scottish Tories to launch its manifesto on Monday. Rishi Sunak dutifully took a break from Gamblegate( more of this later) to pop up and offer his support to Douglas Ross. Two soon to be departed leaders? We go over it, so you can avoid the pain.Ross also appeared on Good Morning Scotland and Gary Robertson grilled him on devolution, reserved issues, and the democratic road to indy ref2.Yet another manifesto launch. This time the SNP's Climate and Just Transition. John Swinney has made a direct plea to Sir Keir Starmer to revisit and reinstate Labour's £28 billion green investment spending plan. Has the SNP managed to square that circle of protecting jobs while tackling climate change?Meanwhile Anas Sarwar struggled to explain what Great British Energy was and how it would cut bills and create jobs. However we finally had confirmation that it wouldn't generate energy but would be a vehicle seeking to secure private investment. But, and it's a big but, that question over the inefficiency over the National Grid and where and how it could be upgraded to meet Labour's 2030 Net Zero target remains. We discuss.Hard on the heels of his D Day "gaffe" Sunak dithered, delayed, then finally after days of prevarication withdrew support for two Tory candidates who apparently used inside information to place winning bets on the General Election date. Is this symbolic of the end of days for both Sunak and the Tories?Everybody to Kenmure Street Felipe Bustos Sierra (director) is a BAFTA-winning Chilean-Belgian filmmaker based in Scotland, living just a few minutes away from Kenmure Street when the protest against the Home Office detention of two local asylum seekers began. His first feature "Nae Pasaran" (2018) uncovered the true impact of the solidarity of Scottish factory workers for victims of Pinochet's military coup in Chile. As a result of the film's research, the men involved received recognition from the Chilean government and a public monument was erected to commemorate their gesture 40 years later. The film became, on release, the most successful Scottish documentary in UK cinemas. It was nominated for Best Documentary at the BIFA 2019 and won Best Feature Film at the BAFTA Scotland Awards 2018.Here's the link to the Crowdfunder https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/debasers/everybody-to-kenmure-streetFacebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61560781820130 ★ Support this podcast ★
In this episode, we speak with Paul O'Connor the senior national officer at the Public and Commerical Services (PCS) union - one of the largest unions in the UK, representing workers across all government departments and in the private sector. Paul tells us about the safe passage for refugees policy the union's members wrote with Care4Calais, and why it is a genuinely humanitarian way to stop the small boat crossings of the Channel. We also touch on working class solidarity, anti-fascism and, the Bibby Stockholm, the hostile environment, and how a string of governments have created the asylum-seeker backlog. --Get in touch--- Twitter: @FleetCivil Mastodon: @civilfleet@kolektiva.social Instagram: thecivilfleet info@civilfleet.com civilfleet.com Support: ko-fi.com/civilfleet ---Show Notes--- For more on the PCS union, see: pcs.org.uk For more on PCS and Care4Calais' Safe Passage Policy, read about it here: https://care4calais.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Safe-Passage-Policy-Paper.pdf If you'd like to email your MP about PCS's safe passage policy, see here: action.pcs.org.uk/page/134188/action/1 Ben and Paul speak about the Tories throughout this episode.
BAFTA Scotland was joined by director Felipe Bustos Sierra for a Q&A following a screening of #BAFTAScot18 winning documentary Nae Pasaran as part of the Into Film Festival. In a Scottish town in 1974, factory workers refuse to carry out repairs on warplane engines in an act of solidarity against the violent military coup in Chile. Four years pass before the engines, left to rust in factory yard, mysteriously disappear in the middle of the night.

In which we give belated hot takes on the controversial Suspiria, the universally acclaimed The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, the barely seen Nae Pasaran, and the best-forgotten Outlaw King.PLUS we pay our respects to industry legends Stan Lee and William Goldman, try and get our heads around the incredibly weird title for the Harley Quinn spinoff movies and spend five hours discussing the social and economic repercussions of the Detective Pikachu movie. We're back! Yup after a two-week break, during which time nothing politically significant at all has happened, the podcast has returned. Please read that last sentence with a note of irony, of course. As you might be aware our absence was down to my better half's close encounters with the NHS and that's where we begin. Lesley recently went to see Nae Pasaran, the movie about the Scottish workers who defied Pinochet's fascist dictatorship in Chile. What lessons can we draw from this amazing true story for today? We, unashamedly, spend the rest of our time focusing on whether independence is the cause that dare not speak its name amongst the SNP leadership, the role of SNP MPs at Westminster, and the role of Holyrood. As well as all that, and there's a lot of all that, we muse on tablet, visits to Skye and Belfast, and David Mundell ecdysiast.
The Cinema For All Podcast is a celebration of going to the cinema. In this fifth, full length episode Jaq and Abi chat about new film releases (Widows, Some Like It Hot, Peterloo, Nae Pasaran and 9-5) and delve into this month’s theme: queer cinema. In this episode, we welcome the marvellous Rico Johnson-Sinclair from CineQ to talk about films that have been important to him such as Tongues Untied, the difficulty around accessing queer films, particular featuring queer people of colour and about his fantastic work screening films. We talk in depth about representation on screen of queer people, in particular queer people of colour, the difference it can make when films are made by queer people, building audiences for these films and much more! We are proud to be supported by the BFI, awarding funds from the National Lottery.
