The spooky thriller House of Spoils on Amazon Prime is about an ambitious chef, Ana (Ariana DeBose) who follows her dream to open a restaurant on a remote estate in the woods. She quickly realizes it's haunted by the vengeful spirit of the previous owner. As Ana battles stress, self-doubt, a skeptical investor, and kitchen chaos, the ghost's sinister presence threatens to sabotage her every step. When cinematographer Eric Lin met with directors Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy (Blow The Man Down), they presented him with several inspirational references by surrealist painter Leonor Fini and Dutch painter Adriaen van Utrecht. Both artists captured the unsettling feeling of eerie decay while being surrounded by the natural world. Nature, rot and its influence on bodies became the movie's core aesthetic. Films like Black Swan (psychological horror), The Shining (single, oppressive location) and Phantom Thread (artistic obsession) also served as inspiration. Eric embraced the use of zoom lenses in the film. “Zooms are super psychological and we tried to find ways that we would sneak them in, because it has this very unsettling feel,” he says. Because Ana is a chef, food also played a major role in the film. “I was interested in trying to find a way to represent the colors that had a feeling of decay- almost a mushroom, moldy look,” Eric explains. “Because what comes from that decay is life, right? It's like creativity is born through all this death and decay. And so I wanted the colors of the film to represent that feeling.” He created a LUT where the vibrant colors stood out while the browns and greens stayed dull and earthy. The kitchen was really being used to cook the dishes, and a food stylist helped to plate all the ingredients. Second unit would then shoot the dishes as they were presented to the table. House of Spoils was shot on location at an estate in Budapest. The crew built a fully functional kitchen set, allowing for meticulously planned lighting. The garden outside the kitchen was also created by the production design team and the greens department. The natural fog blanketing the estate's garden provided the perfect eerie atmosphere, eliminating the need for fog machines. Eric's passion for cinematography wasn't always his career path. After studying at UC Berkeley, he switched gears to study film in grad school at NYU. He managed to land a job as an assistant editor, but cinematography was his true passion. Eric shot music videos and independent films as much as he could on the side. While shooting music videos and independent films, his dedication paid off. The short film Missing went to the Cannes Film Festival. Eric's cinematography is also in several Sundance Film Festival projects, such as The Sound of Silence, Hearts Beat Loud, and I'll Be Your Mirror (originally titled Blood). House of Spoils is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Hearts Beat Loud is an independent comedy-drama starring Nick Offerman, Kiersey Clemons, Toni Collette, Ted Danson, and others released in 2018 across limited screenings. It followed Offerman as the owner of a failing record store, who hits upon minor viral success when he records a jam session with his daughter, a singer just about to attend medical school, and ends up in several major Spotify playlists. The film was directed by Brett Haley with a soundtrack by Keegan DeWitt of Wild Club, and touched upon themes of loss, familial expectations, and old age, resonating heavily with critics, who lauded the film as one of the best of the year.On a new episode of Hell Is A Musical, Lilz and Scott welcome back Rock Candy's Maggie Noel to the program, as they put on their persnickety Brooklyn hipster hats to review Hearts Beat Loud, and its' Postal Service-esque indie pop soundtrack. Join them as the three annoy Scott with another unwelcome recurring bit, pay proper homage to Mitski (Seriously, she rules), find paralells between dance sequences and guitar pedal noodling, and find it generally hard to make jokes during the episodes where the movies are really genuinely good....with Lilz and Scott!
GOOD DAY TO YOU ALL!!! I have premiered another episode of MOVIES ON THE ROCKS!! I know it's been a bit of a break between the christmas episode and this one, but sometimes we need a vacation also. So for that reason, Derryk has chosen a doozy of a movie... and you know how that goes. But never fear, it's not all that bad... and not all that good... just, meh. So sit back and enjoy our discussion of a somewhat "meh" movie with really good actors that just don't hit their marks conclusively. lol.

Kiersey Clemons knows that people have thoughts about her new movie, Antebellum. “Criticize the f*ck outta me,” she tells Bustle. Because now, over a decade into her career, the 26-year-old actor is more than comfortable navigating the court of public opinion. “I can't force Antebellum on folks and it would be wrong of me to [do so]. There’s never a world in which I’m criticizing a Black person for not wanting to see a movie where there’s violence depicted against Black folks.” Antebellum is the latest film to bring the Black experience to the big screen through the lens of horror. But whereas its predecessors like Jordan Peele’s Get Out and Us masterfully exposed the everyday atrocities Black people face via psychological scares, Antebellum is relentlessly violent in its portrayal of Veronica (Janelle Monáe), a modern day activist who finds herself trapped in a mysterious rendering of a plantation. (Veronica is both branded and beaten in the first 40 minutes alone.) And it’s on the plantation that the audience is introduced to Julia (Clemons) a young, pregnant slave. While in the past Clemons turned down roles that required her to play a slave — including films she says became “huge” hits — Julia spoke to her. “I was ready for the [film’s] triggers,” Clemons says of the way Antebellum explores the ancestral trauma of Black Americans. “I found it to be cathartic.” Clemons has never played it safe in her career choices. After cutting her teeth on the Disney channel — she first broke out with a recurring role on the network’s Austin & Ally — Clemons pursued independent films instead of continuing with traditional teen fare. “I was going in and testing for TV shows when I was 18 and I was thinking, ‘These deals are for six years. When I’m 24 do I want to be doing this TV show on the Disney channel?” she says. Soon after, she scored a role in the 2015 indie Dope playing Diggy, a queer high schooler whose best friend accidentally winds up in possession of a drug dealer’s stash. The film, which also starred up-and-comers like Shameik Moore and Lakeith Stanfield, was a critical success and a turning point for Clemons, who identifies as queer. “[It] broke me out from being perceived as straight [and] it broke me out of Disney,” she says. Though Clemons has publicly spoken about her relationship with her former stunt double Ebony De La Haye, Clemons wasn’t always open about her sexuality. “I was getting queer parts before I had even come out. Maybe it was kismet,” she explains. Clemons so effortlessly embodied the tomboyish, quintessentially California Diggy that the film ushered in a spate of similarly queer, hipster roles. In Netflix’s Easy she played a young lesbian trying become a vegan to impress her new girlfriend. In 2018 she co-starred alongside Nick Offerman in Hearts Beat Loud, playing his queer teenage daughter. And last year she performed in Fox’s live television adaptation of Rent as gay public interest lawyer Joanne. Between those roles and being one of the few out Black, queer, young women in Hollywood, the media was quick to label Clemons as an “activist.” But it’s a distinction Clemons isn’t so sure she’s earned. “[Activist] was something that was put on me just because I'm a queer Black femme. I'm realizing that activism is a league of its own,” she says. “It’s an issue that I have with Hollywood right now. [They’ll] put light skinned Black girls on magazine covers and call us ‘heroes’ and ‘activists’ when we're really just Black folks saying, ‘This is the way in which you're violent towards us.’ I don't think that earns the title of activism.” Activist or not, Clemons is steadfast in what she stands for. Which includes Antebellum, despite critics calling its portrayal of slavery both "hollow" and "tone deaf." “People have such criticisms of Antebellum [because] we're so limited [in the Black stories we see on screen],” she says. “White folks don't get that sh*t with their movies because they have so many movies [that] the ones people have criticisms about get washed out. They have another movie to move on to, whereas we don't always have that. And what is that about?” Because if Clemons is going to take your criticism, she's earned the right to dish it back.

Join Jess and Andrew on their further adventures at the Cineplex. This weekend started with a sequel that went leaps and bounds above its predecessor, “The Incredibles 2”. The joyful feeling continued with the crowd pleasing “Hearts Beat Loud”. One of our biggest wishes is that this would have been released wider to find an audience similar to “Love, Simon”, but that might have to wait for the streaming services. The weekend was rounded out with an alright game of “Tag”, though not one that reached the heights of the other films.
