Both programs are coming off disappointing home conference losses after both had winning but underperforming efforts in their out of conference slates. Lincoln Riley has come under fire for his squad's performance against the Ducks and he needs a win badly to try and get the Trojans ready for a couple of challenging road trips.The crew takes a look at this intriguing matchup, with a surging USC offense facing a stingy Washington defense and a struggling Trojan defense against a middling Huskies offense. UW quarterback Demond Williams could be the X-factor in this one, with his ability to scramble and pick up yardage with his legs. On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's, Ryan Abraham, RJ Abeytia and Shotgun Spratling are back in studio breaking down USC's 41-27 loss to Oregon in the Coliseum. Coming into the game we felt this was a must-win for head coach Lincoln Riley, a pass/fail test that would show if the Trojans championship window was actually open. By the time the final whistle blew, it was extremely clear that the Men of Troy were not a championship caliber team and for that you can lay the blame squarely at Riley's door.This was a very winnable game for the Trojans, especially after quarterback Dante Moore was knocked out of the game. With a great home crowd, a 7-3 lead and Oregon's backup quarterback in the game there is no reason for USC to lose the game. Shortcomings like ill-timed penalties, third down defense and special teams mistakes were supposed to be addressed by Riley but they were clearly still a problem on Saturday.At the end of the day, Lincoln Riley is the head coach, not just the offensive coordinator. He is responsible for all aspects of the team, from roster building to discipline, offensive design to defensive drills run in practice. It is his job to make sure that everyone is ready for the big games and they don't come any bigger than Oregon in the Coliseum. The Trojans were not able to play a clean game on Saturday, but took advantage of some major Scarlet Knights mistakes to turn what could have been an inexplicable upset into a rather unsatisfying victory.Quarterback Jayden Maiava missed on some easy throws but he did have a pair of touchdowns with no interceptions and the USC run game was effective most of the game. The real issue was on defense and special teams where miscues stacked on miscues, allowing Rutgers to move the ball up and down the field and even convert a long 4th and 21 with a 40-yard fake punt conversion. The symptoms sounded convincing at first: harsh shifts, apparent slipping, no diagnostic trouble codes, and a vehicle that felt completely wrong on the road. But the actual problem was much simpler. The Durango was stuck in four-low. Once shifted properly through neutral, the harsh shifting, driveline bind, and “slipping” behavior disappeared.Matt uses the case as a springboard into a broader discussion about diagnostic tunnel vision. The point is not just that someone almost condemned a transmission unnecessarily. The deeper issue is how easily a first impression can become the diagnosis. Once the vehicle felt like it was slipping, everything after that could be interpreted through that lens. That is where anchoring, confirmation bias, and premature closure start to become dangerous.The episode also compares the Durango case to a more common misfire scenario. A vehicle comes in with a misfire, the scan tool identifies a cylinder, the car line is known for coil failures, and the diagnosis becomes a coil and plug before much testing happens. That gamble may work most of the time, but the process failure is still there. Being right by probability is not the same as proving the fault.Matt also shares a personal example involving a Mini Cooper that was nearly misdiagnosed as needing a turbo. The actual issue was cam/crank timing related. On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham Shotgun Spratling and intern Makena Arteaga are back in studio talking about the Trojans finishing up spring practice week three and the wave of commitments from some of the top high school football players in Southern California, including a recent Oregon flip for an elite offensive tackle. USC finished up spring practice No. 11 on Saturday in the Coliseum, completing the third of four weeks of spring football workouts. The crew gives their thoughts on what they have seen and heard out on Howard Jones Field with head coach Lincoln Riley and new defensive coordinator Gary Patterson getting the troops ready for the highly anticipated 2026 football season. Practices were more concentrated this spring, running for five weeks instead of six (with one week off for spring break), and four workouts per week instead of three. March is a critical month for the future of Trojan football with Patterson's new defensive scheme being implemented and 31 true freshmen getting in the mix. On the recruiting front general manager Chad Bowden and the squad are catching fire, trying to follow up on the No. 1 ranked high school class for 2026 with another impressive haul in 2027. Since spring football started dozens of prospects have continually visited campus to check out practice and so far three new commitments have been announced. It started with San Diego Cathedral Catholic four-star athlete Honor Fa'alave-Johnson followed by Mater Dei four-star defensive back Danny Lang and Saturday's big flip from the Ducks in Servite four-star offensive tackle Drew Fielder.
