What does it really mean to be a heterodox economist? And how does Modern Monetary Theory fit into today's political narratives? In this episode, Indypodcasters Fiona and Marlene catch up with political economist William Thomson  to unpack the big ideas shaping Scotland's economic debate. William explains what “heterodox economics” actually means, challenges mainstream thinking, and explores how Modern Monetary Theory connects to the political choices facing Scotland right now. We also hear about his ambitious new event, Scotland's Economics Festival, taking place 19–21 March in Leith, Edinburgh — designed to bring big economic ideas out of academia and into the hands of the public.

Thats the name of a grassroots organisation that wants to break apart the stigma that stops so many of us from opening up and talking about how we're feeling. Dan finally did see his dr and since then his health has changed dramtically. For nearly a year, Dan's been on a mission to make it more normal for men to talk openly about their health to each other, their family members and their doctors. On this episode of the podcast, host Dr Pasquale Iannone reports from Leith Kino, a micro cinema initiative set up by a veritable supergroup of film professionals and enthusiasts. The initiative - which is hosted by bar, restaurant and event space Leith Depot on Edinburgh's Leith Walk - aims to provide a space for engagement with avant-garde, experimental, arthouse and trash film.Since September 2025, the Leith Kino team have hosted an eclectic series of events, with members taking it in turn to programme screenings. Pasquale went along to their screening of Kim's Video (2024), a documentary centring on a legendary New York video store run by an enigmatic Korean businessman who one day decides to donate his entire collection, not to a University or a museum, but to a small Sicilian town more than 4000 miles away. This is just the start of a stranger-than-fiction story which is crying out for the Hollywood treatment. Before the sold-out screening of Kim's Video, Pasquale sat down with members of the Leith Kino collective. You'll hear from Tom Johnson, Liam Schell, Morvern Cunningham, Camilla Baier, Soraya Mamiche, Josh Booker, Gosia Bugaj and Fraser Elliott. After the discussion, you'll also hear an extract from the evening's introduction to Kim's Video, provided by Emma Jamieson of Cinetopia, followed by the trailer for the film.If you'd like to keep up-to-date with Leith Kino's events, please see their Instagram or Substack accounts. Their February events include screenings of The Bride Wore Black (François Truffaut, 1968) and Freaks (Tod Browning, 1932).

A small town's patience thins as the Van Stein investigation grinds through rumors, leadership shake-ups, and a rare glimpse into what money really changes—and what it doesn't. We follow the detectives through fall's slow burn: Donna's steady account of Angela's sleep and stoic nature, accounts of Chris's jittery days and drug use, and a campus subculture of games, steam tunnels, and performative bravado that seems colorful until it turns consequential. The evidence feels stingy—an inconclusive FBI report, a burned V-Buck sneaker with two hairs—and yet those minor details start to pull at a larger thread.Behind the scenes, the pressure is relentless. City hall bristles; a police chief retires; a case manager pushes for momentum. Then the financial truth lands with weight. Leith's will and trusts protect Bonnie and delay any payout to the children until age 35, cutting straight through any fantasy of instant inheritance. That legal structure reframes motive, not by erasing it, but by revealing how deadly assumptions can be when people act on what they think, not what is. Interviews in Raleigh sketch a portrait of Chris as easily influenced, approval-seeking, and impulsive, surrounded by friends who remember card games, classes skipped, and stories that feel increasingly relevant. The pivot arrives with polygraphs. Bonnie and Angela sit for the exam and clear the bar for truthfulness, while Chris—after consulting a top defense lawyer—does not appear. The circle narrows. We're left weighing behavior against data, rumor against record, and the uneasy possibility that the clearest path forward lies with the people Chris trusts most. If you're following the Von Stein case, this is the point where the noise drops and the questions sharpen: Who benefits, who knows, and who finally talks?Enjoyed the episode? Rumors don't just color a homicide investigation—they can steer it. We return to Washington, North Carolina, where whispers of a roadside fire, a condensation-ringed bedside glass, and a fat life insurance policy turned into a map of motives and suspects. As the town's fear eased, the volume of talk rose, and leaks from inside the department gave everyday gossip the weight of evidence. We walk through the pivotal leads that shaped the case: the discovery of burned items off a country road, the slow creep of financial motives tied to trusts and insurance, and the messy realities of campus life—LSD experiments, a $35 marijuana check gone sideways, and friends with knives, schemes, and late-night dives into steam tunnels. Interviews with Chris's circle offer clashing portraits of influence and intent, while Angela's world adds fresh uncertainty with a rumored ex-con acquaintance and a boyfriend who believed the killer knew the house too well.Bonnie stands at the center, scarred yet steadfast, convinced her children could not be part of the crime that killed Leith and nearly took her life. Her faith collides with investigative suspicion as we test each thread—occult calendar dates, strict house rules, jealous colleagues, and an ex-husband facing money trouble—against access, opportunity, and common sense. What emerges is a study in how communities turn fragments into narratives and how those narratives can cloud or clarify the truth. If this story pulled you in, follow the show, share it with a friend who loves true crime done thoughtfully, and leave a review with your take: which lead would you chase next?Send us a text Support the show

Archivum (Pavillion Poetry at Liverpool UP, 2025) by Dr. Theresa Muñoz is a book – wise, funny and inventive by turn – that explores what it means to look at artefacts in an archive, and how these objects resonate with events in our lives. Imagined as a walk across Edinburgh, landmarks such as the Balmoral clock, National Library of Scotland, Meadows, Canongate Kirkyard and Water of Leith provide a meditative backdrop to the poems. The archives - in particular the archive of the writer Muriel Spark – are used to create a space to come to terms with the complexities of a life and how we in turn tell stories about ourselves: the depths of our familial relationships, relationship breakdowns and the death of a parent. What's found in the archive's boxes -- including recipes, telegrams, letters -- stirs and amplifies feelings of belonging, disorientation, triumph and grief. With a focus on women writers and interracial relationships, the book explores objects belonging to significant figures in the poet's imaginary: along with Spark, the actor Maggie Smith, poet Elizabeth Bishop, the 19th century slave owner's daughter Eliza Junor and psychotherapist Marie Battle Singer. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. A quiet street in Smallwood is jolted awake by a midnight attack that leaves Leith Von Stein dead and Bonnie barely alive, and within hours the investigation collides with jurisdictional friction, fragile timelines, and the oldest question in homicide: who benefits. We walk through the first full day with Sheriff Nelson Shepard and SBI agent Louis Young as they navigate a thin crime scene, a missing mobile lab, and a press narrative that hints at burglary while the evidence suggests something far more personal. At National Spinning, colleagues paint Leith as a principled auditor who recorded calls to stay accurate, not to trap. A rumored “mobile home” morphs from scandal bait to a practical plan for grandparents, but the money shocks—an inheritance rumored at over a million and life insurance pegged at another million—transform the case from chaos into a motive matrix. Then the autopsy lands like a gavel. Dr. Paige Hudson documents a devastating head blow and a fatal stab to the heart, but it's the stomach contents—chicken and rice—that challenge the 4 a.m. timeline and force a hard reset on alibis and sightings.Tips flood in: a baby blue Japanese station wagon with two scruffy young men, a rumor of a tent-dweller with a fresh bandage, and a farmer's report of a strange early-morning fire that might have burned clothing. Neighbors add social texture—insurance details, calm reactions from the teens, and a weapons-obsessed local kid—while Angela clarifies family plans and distances the household from a mysterious green knapsack left behind. A late-night interview with Chris offers a plausible weekend story framed by schoolwork and beer, yet his nerves keep investigators cautious and curious. What emerges is a layered portrait of motive, opportunity, and timing: money that could tempt, a scene that resists burglary tropes, and a medical timeline that won't sit still. We map the leads, weigh the psychology, and set up the questions that will drive the next phase: Was Bonnie meant to die? Did someone close orchestrate the attack? Or did a stranger's impulse intersect with a family's fortune. Featuring - Economists Leith van Onselen & Matt Grudnoff Punter’s Politics Political Fundraiser Tickets: https://www.punterspolitics.com/pages/punters-political-fundraising-dinnerBe a dark money funder to help hire a lobbyist for the punters: https://chuffed.org/project/134297-fund-australias-first-punter-powered-lobbyist Leith's Notes"The first chart in this article shows why demand side policies never work as they just feed higher home prices:" https://www.macrobusiness.com.au/2025/05/australians-snookered-by-mega-mortgages/"Even if we changed NG and the CGT discount today it wouldn't do squat for the rental market as the volume of migration would continue to overwhelm supply, driving vacancy rates lower and rents higher. Sure, building public housing would help and is worthwhile. But that would cost many billions and would merely be taken up by new migrants (this is happening now in Melbourne). We simply cannot build enough homes or infrastructure to keep up with demand. We don't have the capacity. Therefore, the only solution is to go back to pre 2005 levels of migration and ensure that it is focused on skills the country actually needs. We need quality, not quantity. As long as policymakers continue to pump immigration, the rental and infrastructure crises will continue. Nothing can be done on the supply side in any reasonable timeframe to change this fact. Matt's Notes I claimed that over the last 10 years the population has increased by 16% but the number of dwellings has increased by 19%Population data comes from National, state and territory population. Click on the “Population and components of change – national” towards the bottom of the webpage. In the spreadsheet that downloads we are looking for “Estimated Resident Population (ERP) ; Australia” (this is column L in the spreadsheet). 10 years comes from March 2015 to March 2025. The numbers are population in March 2015: 23,745,600. Population in March 2025: 27,536,900. The formular for calculating the percentage increase is (Mar-2025 – Mar-2015)/Mar-2015.Dwellings data comes from Total Value of Dwellings. Click on “Table 1. Total value of dwellings, all series” towards the bottom of the webpage. In the spreadsheet that downloads we are looking for “Number of residential dwellings; Australia” (this is Column AT in the spreadsheet). 10 years comes from the increase from March 2015 to March 2025. The numbers are dwellings in March 2015: 9,511,300. Dwellings in March 2025: 11,320,300.The quarterly dwellings data only goes back to Sep-2011. But the housing crisis really started in the early 2000s. So, to go back further I use census data. If you compare the 2001 census with the 2021 census (latest census), population has increased 33% and dwellings have increased 39%.Population and dwelling data for the 2001 census comes from 2022.0 – Census of Population and Housing: Classification Counts, Australia, 2001. In the downloads tab click on the first data cube “Australia Classification Counts 2001”.Click on the first spreadsheet called “Aust_Age.xls”. This has the population number at D110 in the spreadsheet. The population is 18,972,350.Click on the 14th spreadsheet is called “Aust_Dwelling Location.xls”. It has the dwelling number at B15 in the spreadsheet. The number of dwellings is 7,810,352.Population data for the 2021 census comes from Population; Census. At the bottom of the webpage click on “Data table for population data summary”. The population is 25,422,788 (D20 in Table 1 of the spreadsheet).Dwelling data for the 2021 census comes from Housing: Census. At the bottom of the webpage click on “Data table for Housing data summary”. The number of dwellings is 10,875,248 (J17 in Table 1 of the spreadsheet). You now have the population from both 2001 census (18,972,350) and the 2025 census (25,422,788). You also have the number of dwellings from the 2001 census (7,810,352) and the 2025 census (10,875,248).Rent and general inflation figures all come from the Consumer Price Index, Australia.I claimed over the last 10 years general inflation (CPI) had increased 33%, while rents had increased 24%.Both figures come from the bottom of the webpage at the CPI website linked above, called “Table 7. CPI: Group, Sub-group and Expenditure Class, Weighted Average of Eight Capital Cities”.The rent numbers come from “Index Numbers; Rents; Australia” (column BC in tab Data1). I actually compared Mar-2015 (109.2) to Jun-2025 (133.7). This gives a 24% increase. But to compare with the dwelling data I should have compared March-2015 (109.2) to Mar-2025 (133.7). This reduces the increase to 22%. But as I was arguing that rent prices hadn’t increased as much, this helps my point. The general inflation numbers come from the same spreadsheet as the rent numbers but are at “Index Numbers; All groups CPI; Australia” (column EC in tab Data1). Again, I compared Mar-2015 (106.8) to Jun-2025 (141.7) to get 33%. But I should have compared Mar-2015 (106.8) with Mar-2025 (140.7), which would give 32%.I also claimed that over 25 years general inflation (CPI) had increased 103%, while rents had increased 115%.These figures are from the same columns as the rent (BC in tab Data1) and all groups CPI (EC in tab Data1) data from above. Except instead of comparing 10 years, I went back to Mar-2000 (62.7 for Rent and 69.7 for CPI) and then compared this with Jun-2025 (135.0 for rent and 141.7 for CPI). Again, for consistency I should have compared them both with Mar-2025. This would have meant the general inflation increase would have been 102% (rather than 103%), and the rent increase would have been 113% (rather than 115%). This doesn’t make any difference to the points I was making. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A whispered plea for help in the dead of night unravels a chilling tale of betrayal, resentment, and deadly consequences in Washington, North Carolina. July 25, 1988 began as any other sultry summer night in this sleepy riverside town, where crime rarely disrupts the gentle pace of life. But at 4:24 AM, dispatcher Michelle Sparrow received a desperate call from Bonnie Von Stein, her voice barely audible: "This is an emergency...my husband may be dying and I may be dying too." What first responders discovered at 110 Lawson Road, in the town's most affluent neighborhood, was a scene of unimaginable brutality that would shatter the community's sense of security forever. The Von Steins appeared to have everything – a beautiful home, financial security, and plans for the future now that their children were approaching college age. Leith Von Stein had recently inherited over $1.2 million from his parents, allowing him to contemplate early retirement from a job he never truly enjoyed. But beneath this veneer of prosperity lay complex family dynamics, particularly between Leith and his stepson Chris Pritchard. Despite Leith's attempts to win Chris's affection through expensive gifts like a classic Mustang, their relationship remained strained. The weekend before the attack, Chris had visited unexpectedly, engaged in an uncomfortable confrontation about drug use, then abruptly returned to NC State claiming he had an urgent paper due. What initially appeared to be a home invasion would gradually reveal itself as something far more calculated and personal. Through meticulous investigation of Bonnie's description of the "shadow" who attacked them in their sleep, the peculiar timing of Chris's visit, and the family's newly acquired wealth, detectives began piecing together a narrative more disturbing than anyone could have imagined. This case examines how inheritance, family resentment, and opportunity can combine with devastating consequences, proving that sometimes the greatest threats come not from strangers, but from those closest to us.Subscribe to follow this investigation as we uncover the shocking truth behind one of North Carolina's most notorious crimes, where a family's darkest secrets ultimately led to murder.Send us a text Support the show
