This week, we're celebrating Pride with the movie that brought the drag queen road trip genre to America! Hot on the high heels of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert from 1994 Australia comes this 1995 American release starring Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo. When their car breaks down in small-town Nebraska, three drag queens must win the hearts and minds of the local townsfolk while evading a bigoted sheriff. With supporting turns by Stockard Channing, Blythe Danner, Chris Penn, Arliss Howard, and cameos by RuPaul, Naomi Campbell, Robin Williams, and the titular statuesque actress herself, the film opened at number one at the box office and is considered groundbreaking for being the first mainstream Hollywood production to depict drag queens. Along with RuPaul's popularity, the 1990 documentary Paris is Burning, and the aforementioned Priscila, interest in drag drove audiences to the cinema. Critics, however, were less enthused, but Swayze and Leguizamo were both nominated for Golden Globes, and the film has, of course, endured as an icon of queer cinema. Now the four of us are piling into a yellow convertible 1967 Cadillac DeVille with an autographed copy of the improbably titled To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar to see what in gay hell is going on!   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com    You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Please subscribe and give us a positive review. This week, we are celebrating Pride by hitting the highway with a double showing of drag queen road movies: Stephan Elliott's The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) and Beeban Kidron's To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995). These films show that a road movie is about much more than getting from point A to point B. We look at how Tick's journey in Priscilla allows him to shed the fear of being himself in front of his estranged son, anchoring the comedy with beautiful, independent vulnerability. On the flip side, we watch how the trio in To Wong Foo confront and dismantle their own preconceived notions about small-town communities as they embed themselves in middle America. It is a double feature about identity, community, and self-discovery. Whether it is navigating the harsh Australian outback or transforming a forgotten town, both films suggest that the ultimate destination on a drag journey is finding the confidence within yourself to be yourself completely.

This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Emmy-nominated TV writer (Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Amber Ruffin Show) and comedy performer, Jenny Hagel (@jennyhagel), and talk about why the 1987 hit movie-musical, Dirty Dancing, Should've Been Gay. We thought we were big Dirty Dancing fans, but Jenny one thousand percent has us both beat. When this film was released, it was the talk of the school for anyone whose parents allowed them to see it. For Jenny and all the others whose parents said “no way”, sneakily watching Dirty Dancing at a sleepover was basically a right of passage (and a spiritual experience). Ever since the first time Jenny laid eyes on Jennifer Grey, Dirty Dancing has been playing on a loop in her head.  Very few things need to be changed to make Dirty Dancing a canonically queer film. Francis “Baby Gay” Houseman (Jennifer Grey) is already a clear lesbian. There's literally nothing more lesbian than rolling into an unfamiliar situation and deciding it is now your job to solve a crime (and then solving that crime!). Francis' big clipboard energy is off the charts. Patrick Swayze as “Johnny Castle" isn't exactly giving heterosexual either. His whole persona reads as more ‘butch lesbian' than straight dude. Not to mention that just 8 years later, To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar was released starring Patrick Swayze as the drag queen, Vida. It's not exactly a leap for us to view this cult classic as a Dirty Dancing sequel where Johnny is finally living his truth.  We know one thing for sure, Dirty Dancing Should've Been Gay. Don't forget to pick up your own copy of Jenny's debut book of essays, “Advice No One Asked For” available now!  Give us your own answers to our Q & Gay on Instagram and follow along on Facebook, TikTok, YouTube and BlueSky @lezhangoutpod. This episode has so much.  We cover the Jewel Box Revue, the drag show that originated in the thirties and toured through the seventies creating a space for drag, female impersonators and gender bent comics in a show that advertised itself as 25 men and 1 girl.  We also cover anti-crossdressing laws, the police's informal three article rule and how newspapers at the time published the names  of those arrested for cross dressing, performing drag, or even just being openly gay.    We talk about how drag shows came up from French cabarets like the Moulin Rouge and the Folies Bergere and morphed into something different and special in America.  We also discuss Club 82, the New York nightspot run by the Gallo crime family that made a safe place in New York for drag long before Pride Marches and rainbow flags.  We even discuss how movies like La Cage Au Folles, The Rocky Horror Picture Show,,The Birdcage, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar owe a lot of their DNA to these early expressions of queer joy and drag glamour.  These were some of the earliest safe spaces in America and we owe them a lot.  So come along on this celebration of LGBTQ history and found family!  It's fun and we guarantee you will learn something! And in case you aare curious, the person bringing us back from commercial is part of an old song by gender bent comedian Rae Bourbon.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/family-plot--4670465/support.

For this episode, we open the time capsule to a spirited and unforgettable roundtable recorded at New York Comic Con, where the one and only Adam West sat down to reflect on stepping back into the cape for The Return of the Caped Crusaders. Decades after defining Batman for an entire generation, West embraced the chance to revisit the character who made him a global icon. The animated film reunited him with Burt Ward and Julie Newmar, rekindling the bright, mischievous, and delightfully earnest energy of the 1966 series — a tone that still stands apart in the superhero landscape. Beloved for his iconic portrayal of Batman, Adam West brought a singular blend of comedic timing, earnestness, and charisma to the role. The Return of the Caped Crusaders stands as a celebration of his legacy and a final salute to the version of Batman that taught the world how fun a hero could be. SAVE 17% On PLUS

On episode 317 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson alongside AwardsWatch contributors Dan Bayer and Josh Parham to go back 30 years and take a look at the 68th Academy Awards, covering the films of 1995. On this retrospective, the AW team take a trip to 1995, where actor Mel Gibson rode off the with multiple Oscars, winning Best Picture for his war epic, Braveheart. While a hit within its own right, it was a bit of a shocking win considering many believed that Apollo 13 was going to take home Oscar's top prize. It's a massive upset that would have ripple effects over the course of Academy history that would have make up wins not just for Ron Howard, but for other nominees in this Oscar field. 1995 is a stacked, incredible year of cinema that the gang tries to reflect a little better than what the Academy nominated with films like Heat, Showgirls, Get Shorty, Clueless, Seven, Before Sunset, Friday, To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar and more getting either mentions, nominations, or wins in the big top eight categories.Maybe one of them wins Best Picture, maybe they don't, you'll have to listen and try not to fall down a flight of stairs to find out. In their in-depth discussion, the AW team talked about the film year of 1995, briefly discuss talk about Braveheart as a Best Picture winner, do an extensive conversation over the below the line categories and nominees for the year, and then the new version of the AW Shoulda Woulda Coulda game, where instead of individual replacements, they must decide as a group who the nominees and winners should be in the top eight categories. The rules of the game state they can only replace two of the nominees that year from each category, except in Best Picture, where the group could replace up to three films to make up the final set of five nominated films. Like past retrospective episodes, it was a fascinating, fun conversation including spirited debates, alliances, vote swinging, celebrating various movies, performances that aren't normally talked about and more that we all hope you enjoy. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music, YouTube and more. This podcast runs 2h47m. We will be back in next week for another retrospective over the 83rd Academy Awards, covering the films of 2010. Till then, let's get into it. Hammer Horror’s Atomic Terror: X the Unknown (1956) – Reviewed! Hear my words, and tremble… This week, on the Scary Spirits Podcast, the unyielding crusade continues. Your devoted host, Greg, dives deep into the hallowed (and often bloody) vaults of Hammer Film Productions, selecting a true relic from the atomic age: the chilling 1956 science fiction masterpiece, X the Unknown. Forget your quaint ghosts; this is a reckoning of pure, primordial energy. Join your guides through the shadows, Karen and Greg, as they meticulously dissect this early Hammer horror landmark. We shall explore every creeping dread, every unnerving implication of this British cinematic classic. What unspeakable, radioactive menace emerges from the depths of the earth? We shall tell you! But fear not the void, for we have libations! Our hosts shall calm their nerves (and perhaps yours) with a meticulously crafted, themed beverage: a potent and electrifying “Atomic” Cocktail. Listen now if you dare to confront the unknown… This is essential listening for every fan of classic horror film reviews, Hammer Films, and the spine-tingling terror of 1950s sci-fi movies. Atomic Cocktail • 1 1/2 oz sparkling wine• 1 1/2 oz cognac• 1 tsp dry sherry• 1 1/2 oz vodka Instructions: Stir cognac, vodka and sherry in a mixing glass. Pour in a cocktail glass. Add champagne. Source: abc.virginia.gov A Brief Synopsis: A creature made of a radioactive mud-like substance escapes from the centre of the Earth and terrorises a Scottish village. Some of the topics discussed and highlights of this episode include: We learn a little about the Geiger counter. Is there such a thing as “harmless” radiation? Dr. Karen tells us about radiation burns. We learn about tritium and cobalt-60. Greg reminisces about Julie Newmar. Our rating of the film: This movie was so bad that it took us 4 cocktails to get through it. Take our online survey! We want to know more about you! Please take our survey. CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of homophobia, sexual assault, spousal abuse. This week's movie may not be the gayest movie ever but it's certainly one of the most famous. The star power here is off the charts, with two absolute bona fide movie stars and a perfect up and comer as our three gorgeous, fabulous, out of this world drag queens. Unfortunately the movie seems to think that ultimately we need less time with the queens and more time with a small town looking for help. It's a mistake, and one that keeps the movie from being in the ultimate pantheon. But my, what a magic fairy-dust ride it is. “Well, pumpkins, looks like it's the age-old dilemma. Style...or substance.” It's Pride season, and we watched the larger-than-life drag classic “To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything. Julie Newmar,” and we need a recount of our Princess Points. Over the past 30 years, this movie has secured itself as one of the most quotable comedies of the 90s. This isn't just a funny gay movie; this is a funny movie, period. We promise we didn't spend the entire 90 minutes parroting our favorite quotes back and forth, but when we did… we just couldn't help ourselves. Our three leads took these roles, inhabited them, and as the kids these days say— they ate. And left no crumbs. Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo took a huge risk accepting these roles, but boy did it pay off. Miss Vida Boheme, Noxeema Jackson, and Chi Chi Rodriguez are on the Mount Rushmore of movie drag queens, and this movie is a treasure to the gays. We acknowledge some gender issues that are at play and some outdated terminology, but the script and the performances all came from a place of love. Clock the Grande Dames of drag in the opening and closing scenes and try to keep tally with us. Get ready for a fun one… Red and Wild. That's our theme! This Pride Month, Mark Radulich and Sean Comer celebrate the flamboyant, fearless, and fiercely important legacies of three trailblazing films: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994), To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995), and Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001). While each tells its own unique story—from a desert drag road trip across the Australian outback to a heartfelt exploration of gender identity through glam rock cabaret—they are all interconnected by the historical arc of queer visibility in cinema. These films didn't just showcase LGBTQ+ characters—they centered them, in eras where that was still an act of rebellion.Priscilla broke ground internationally, putting Australian queer cinema on the global map and normalizing drag culture long before RuPaul's Drag Race made it mainstream. Just one year later, To Wong Foo introduced Middle America to drag queens with heart, humor, and dignity—starring mainstream Hollywood actors like Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo at the height of their careers. Then came Hedwig, a deeply personal indie musical about gender, trauma, and artistic expression, which has since become a cult favorite and a cornerstone of trans representation in modern film and theater. Together, these films reflect the evolution of queer and trans narratives—from coded subtext to full-throated declarations of identity and humanity.More than just products of their time, these movies pushed culture forward. They asked audiences to look beyond binary norms and embrace love, transformation, and self-expression in all forms. Whether through sequins, ballads, or beat-up buses, these stories assert—loudly and proudly—that queer people, drag performers, and trans individuals deserve joy, complexity, and a place in the cinematic canon. And as we revisit them in 2025, their messages feel just as urgent, defiant, and beautiful as ever.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Toklas.  Lover, confidant and essentially spouse to writer Gertrude Stein, she also was a writer in her own right and one of her books The Alice B. Toklas contained a recipe for Haschich Fudge that made her a counterculture icon.  (we will of course share the recipe here in the show notes, we are nothing if not full service.)  She also wrote, had her ups and downs and saw Gertrude through her final days, staying on alone afterwards.  So join us in this special PRIDE episode (the first of two this month) and enjoy!Haschich Fudge (which anyone could whip up on a rainy day)This is the food of Paradise—of Baudelaire's Artificial Paradises: it might provide an entertaining refreshment for a Ladies' Bridge Club or a chapter meeting of the DAR. In Morocco it is thought to be good for warding off the common cold in damp winter weather and is, indeed, more effective if taken with large quantities of hot mint tea. Euphoria and brilliant storms of laughter; ecstatic reveries and extension of one's personality on several simultaneous planes are to be complacently expected. Almost anything Saint Theresa did, you can do better if you can bear to be ravished by “un évanouissement reveillé.”Take 1 teaspoon black peppercorns, 1 whole nutmeg, 4 average sticks of cinnamon, 1 teaspoon coriander. These should all be pulverised in a mortar. About a handful each of stoned dates, dried figs, shelled almonds and peanuts: chop these and mix them together. A bunch of cannabis sativa can be pulverised. This along with the spices should be dusted over the mixed fruit and nuts, kneaded together. About a cup of sugar dissolved in a big pat of butter. Rolled into a cake and cut into pieces or made into balls about the size of a walnut, it should be eaten with care. Two pieces are quite sufficient.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/family-plot--4670465/support.

SQUIB SZN: E2: HELL TO ETERNITY

Send us a textContent Warning: Filmic violence is and will often be celebrated throughout Season 15 – Squib Season. Second in the series and keeping to their unpatented temporal pincer movement, the enlisted four of TGTPTU storm the beachheads of Season 15 this week to liberate Squib Season's earliest covered picture, the black-and-white WWII movie HELL TO ETERNITY (1960). (Not to be confused with To Hell from Eternity, which does not exist; To Hell and Back, which does and preceded in Technicolor this week's talkie by five years; or From Hell to Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, which is actually the combined titles of two vastly different films released, respectively, 41 years and 35 years after this week's feature.) In Hell to Eternity, the 6'0”-tall, New Orleans-born Caucasian actor Jeffrey Hunter (yes, yes, nerds, we know he's Captain Chistopher Pike, listen back to our The Searchers 4x4 episode but also listen to this week's for an irony behind Hunter's being replaced on Star Trek TOS by actor Sean Kenney in Season 1's clips episode two-parter “The Menagerie”), then age 34, plays war hero and protagonist Guy Gabaldon in this biopic based on the real life events of the 5'4”-foot tall Latino Los Angelean of the same name when he was 18.  As in the movie, Gabaldon was raised by adoptive Japanese parents, learning their first language (and presumably, as in the movie, their stories about fish and love), and enlisted after Pearl Harbor as a translator. It's with his language skills that Gabaldon was able to, as depicted at the end of the film, convince over 800 Japanese soldiers and civilians to surrender, although further research would be required by the author of these show notes to know whether real-life Gabaldon adopted/stole a Japanese child to be his son as implied at the end of the film (IMDB Trivia does claim Gabaldon named one of his sons after Hunter as he was enamored by his portrayal of him, implying Gabaldon had more than one son) or if the eighteen-year-old short king had swell times in swinging Hawaii as shown in the film's contentious, extended party sequence containing not just one but two apartment burlesque routines.  The film is lensed by Burnett Guffey who will go on to shoot (on film) our next earliest entry, i.e., BONNIE AND CLYDE (1967) for which he'd earn his second Academy Award. His first Oscar win was for another flick whose title lends itself to easy confusion with this week's, namely FROM HERE TO ETERNITY (1953). Also involved, Lieutenant (later Captain) Sulu (or the actor and activist who originally played the helmsman/fencing expert in Star Trek TOS). Also, hundreds of Japanese Imperial Army veterans and active-duty U.S. Marines who reenacted events from the Battle of Saipan on the adjacent island of Okinawa for the cameras commanded by Guffrey. And some squibs.   This episode, hear Ryan explain both what squibs are and, later, how a man got his start as a boy. Jack, subsequent to the latter, loses his mind. Tom spoils the surprise appearance by a famous and long-deceased sports announcer. And Ken, as impossible as it might seem, might actually change his opinion on mic, specifically about the seemingly endless Hawaii party scene.  Subscribe and listen as the Good Pod Boys give a 21-gun salute to this forgotten classic. THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @goodpodugly.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gLetterboxd (follow us!):Podcast: goodpoduglyKen: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

The PhilenApocalypse is back with a vengeance in Super 3D! Well, it's an audio podcast, so it's not really in 3D but this is the third PhilenApocalypse. Have there really been three of these things??? Yes, there have been three and this time it's the DRAG STORY TIME edition where Philena fails to completely torment the olds but she does enlighten them. First she goes back 30 years for the family-friendly, Spielberg-produced, and strangely-titled drag queen road epic, TO WONG FOO, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING! JULIE NEWMAR (1995) where ripped action stars Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes get in touch with their feminine side as drag queens driving across America in what the filmmakers described as "Easy Rider with dresses." Along for the ride is comedian and performance artist John Leguizamo as Chi-Chi Rodriguez, a young drag queen in training. Then Philena digs into her teen years HURRICANE BIANCA (2016) with RuPaul's Drag Race Season Six champ BIANCA DEL RIO, who wreaks havoc on a Texas high school after they fire her cis-gendered alter-ego Richard for being gay. Starring Rachel Dratch (!) as the evil vice principal with Alan Cumming in a jarring cameo as a kind of agent for high school teachers I guess, and RuPaul via Zoom or Skype, or whatever people were phoning things in with in 2016. Does Philena torture Bob, Greg and Cory with this one? You'll have to listen to find out, but the results may surprise you. In the opening, the OMFYS crew avoids talking about Nathan Fielder (barely), but they do talk about the box office phenomenon of SINNERS, even though Philena and Cory scold Bob about daring to reveal even the most minor plot points. Bob and Greg also tell their tale of meeting the late JOE DON BAKER (RIP) at the Judo Gene LeBell Roast which somehow ends with Tigger twerking with deadly MMA superstars. You will not want to miss this. Hosts: Philena Franklin, Cory Sklar, Bob Calhoun & Greg Franklin Old Movies for Young Stoners Theme by Chaki the Funk Wizard. Used with permission.
