“Well, pumpkins, looks like it's the age-old dilemma. Style...or substance.” It's Pride season, and we watched the larger-than-life drag classic “To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything. Julie Newmar,” and we need a recount of our Princess Points. Over the past 30 years, this movie has secured itself as one of the most quotable comedies of the 90s. This isn't just a funny gay movie; this is a funny movie, period. We promise we didn't spend the entire 90 minutes parroting our favorite quotes back and forth, but when we did… we just couldn't help ourselves. Our three leads took these roles, inhabited them, and as the kids these days say— they ate. And left no crumbs. Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo took a huge risk accepting these roles, but boy did it pay off. Miss Vida Boheme, Noxeema Jackson, and Chi Chi Rodriguez are on the Mount Rushmore of movie drag queens, and this movie is a treasure to the gays. We acknowledge some gender issues that are at play and some outdated terminology, but the script and the performances all came from a place of love. Clock the Grande Dames of drag in the opening and closing scenes and try to keep tally with us. Get ready for a fun one… Red and Wild. That's our theme! To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995) is a cult classic about three drag queens stranded in small town America. Tune in to hear about our love of drag, our thoughts on representation, and more!
This Pride Month, Mark Radulich and Sean Comer celebrate the flamboyant, fearless, and fiercely important legacies of three trailblazing films: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994), To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995), and Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001). While each tells its own unique story—from a desert drag road trip across the Australian outback to a heartfelt exploration of gender identity through glam rock cabaret—they are all interconnected by the historical arc of queer visibility in cinema. These films didn't just showcase LGBTQ+ characters—they centered them, in eras where that was still an act of rebellion.Priscilla broke ground internationally, putting Australian queer cinema on the global map and normalizing drag culture long before RuPaul's Drag Race made it mainstream. Just one year later, To Wong Foo introduced Middle America to drag queens with heart, humor, and dignity—starring mainstream Hollywood actors like Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo at the height of their careers. Then came Hedwig, a deeply personal indie musical about gender, trauma, and artistic expression, which has since become a cult favorite and a cornerstone of trans representation in modern film and theater. Together, these films reflect the evolution of queer and trans narratives—from coded subtext to full-throated declarations of identity and humanity.More than just products of their time, these movies pushed culture forward. They asked audiences to look beyond binary norms and embrace love, transformation, and self-expression in all forms. Whether through sequins, ballads, or beat-up buses, these stories assert—loudly and proudly—that queer people, drag performers, and trans individuals deserve joy, complexity, and a place in the cinematic canon. And as we revisit them in 2025, their messages feel just as urgent, defiant, and beautiful as ever.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
It's time to watch To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar! and get ready for PRIDE! Put on your most rainbow-y outfit and catch this, the first of two special PRIDE episodes this month! Today's episode we introduce Alice B. Toklas. Lover, confidant and essentially spouse to writer Gertrude Stein, she also was a writer in her own right and one of her books The Alice B. Toklas contained a recipe for Haschich Fudge that made her a counterculture icon. (we will of course share the recipe here in the show notes, we are nothing if not full service.) She also wrote, had her ups and downs and saw Gertrude through her final days, staying on alone afterwards. So join us in this special PRIDE episode (the first of two this month) and enjoy!Haschich Fudge (which anyone could whip up on a rainy day)This is the food of Paradise—of Baudelaire's Artificial Paradises: it might provide an entertaining refreshment for a Ladies' Bridge Club or a chapter meeting of the DAR. In Morocco it is thought to be good for warding off the common cold in damp winter weather and is, indeed, more effective if taken with large quantities of hot mint tea. Euphoria and brilliant storms of laughter; ecstatic reveries and extension of one's personality on several simultaneous planes are to be complacently expected. Almost anything Saint Theresa did, you can do better if you can bear to be ravished by “un évanouissement reveillé.”Take 1 teaspoon black peppercorns, 1 whole nutmeg, 4 average sticks of cinnamon, 1 teaspoon coriander. These should all be pulverised in a mortar. About a handful each of stoned dates, dried figs, shelled almonds and peanuts: chop these and mix them together. A bunch of cannabis sativa can be pulverised. This along with the spices should be dusted over the mixed fruit and nuts, kneaded together. About a cup of sugar dissolved in a big pat of butter. Rolled into a cake and cut into pieces or made into balls about the size of a walnut, it should be eaten with care. Two pieces are quite sufficient.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/family-plot--4670465/support.
This week Kelley and Jordan go over, "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar." In this episode they are confused on what a career girl is, tell of the only reason they would pick someone up on the side of the road, and spend a lot of time making fun of the idea of James Spader as a drag queen.Listen to us on Apple Podcast, Spotify, or anywhere else you listen to podcastsApple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/so-you-think-youre-iconic/id1528462095Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1sV5jnnsnI7mcCk3pA7yVT?si=rD_0rUScQS2y2arFbbJZPg&dl_branch=1Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sytyipodcast/Twitter: https://twitter.com/SYTYIPODCASTYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClWbWmlH_IEXGy9Dbbeg--A

The PhilenApocalypse is back with a vengeance in Super 3D! Well, it's an audio podcast, so it's not really in 3D but this is the third PhilenApocalypse. Have there really been three of these things??? Yes, there have been three and this time it's the DRAG STORY TIME edition where Philena fails to completely torment the olds but she does enlighten them. First she goes back 30 years for the family-friendly, Spielberg-produced, and strangely-titled drag queen road epic, TO WONG FOO, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING! JULIE NEWMAR (1995) where ripped action stars Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes get in touch with their feminine side as drag queens driving across America in what the filmmakers described as "Easy Rider with dresses." Along for the ride is comedian and performance artist John Leguizamo as Chi-Chi Rodriguez, a young drag queen in training. Then Philena digs into her teen years HURRICANE BIANCA (2016) with RuPaul's Drag Race Season Six champ BIANCA DEL RIO, who wreaks havoc on a Texas high school after they fire her cis-gendered alter-ego Richard for being gay. Starring Rachel Dratch (!) as the evil vice principal with Alan Cumming in a jarring cameo as a kind of agent for high school teachers I guess, and RuPaul via Zoom or Skype, or whatever people were phoning things in with in 2016. Does Philena torture Bob, Greg and Cory with this one? You'll have to listen to find out, but the results may surprise you. In the opening, the OMFYS crew avoids talking about Nathan Fielder (barely), but they do talk about the box office phenomenon of SINNERS, even though Philena and Cory scold Bob about daring to reveal even the most minor plot points. Bob and Greg also tell their tale of meeting the late JOE DON BAKER (RIP) at the Judo Gene LeBell Roast which somehow ends with Tigger twerking with deadly MMA superstars. You will not want to miss this. Hosts: Philena Franklin, Cory Sklar, Bob Calhoun & Greg Franklin Old Movies for Young Stoners Theme by Chaki the Funk Wizard. Used with permission. Gene Hackman left us in shocking and tragic circumstances on February 18, 2025. With his signature intensity, he may be one of the least stony actors of all time, but he was one of the best. To pay tribute to him we have his trippiest movie this side of CISCO PIKE (1971) with the quick-cut, dolly-shot, bullet-hole-cam madness of Sam Raimi's THE QUICK AND THE DEAD (1995). In this tribute to Sergio Leone's ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (1968), Gene Hackman delivers one of his most villainous performances as old west tyrant John Herod, who draws every shootist to his desert town for an annual gunfighting competition where the contestants duel to the death. Joining us to talk about Raimi's modern spaghetti western is actor LENNIE LOFTIN, who plays the grizzled townie Foy and gets to toss around an up-and-coming Russell Crowe in the movie. THE QUICK AND THE DEAD also stars Sharon Stone in the gender-swapped Man-with-No-Name role, Crowe in his first U.S. picture, and then rising star Leonardo DiCaprio as the cocky kid who is pretty good with a six-shooter. Plus Lance Henriksen, Keith David, Pat Hingle, Raynor Schiene, Roberts Blossom, and the great Woody Strode in his final film. Just about everybody's in this one and we are so lucky to have Loftin here to talk about this amazing film. Also joining host Bob Calhoun in her OMFYS debut, Rosemary Picado. Now you have heard her haunting vocals in the "O Nosferatu" carol in our NOSFERATU CHRISTMAS episode, but this is her first time as a panelist. She's a QUICK AND THE DEAD expert and fanatic, so we couldn't do this episode without her. Cory, Greg, and Philena are on assignment but they'll be back for The PhilenApocalypse III: Drag Story Time where Philena returns to torture the olds with TO WONG FOO, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING! The gals circle back on their “To Wong Foo” discussion (from episode 68: “It's a Say Something Hat Day”) because frankly Angela still has questions. For example, why the nuns called Natalie a clown and why there was a praying frog named Fergie. Easter falls on 4/20 this year so we've got HIPPY JESUS and SPACE JESUS with JESUS CHRIST SUPER STAR (1973) and THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (1951). We've got Hippy Jesus screaming in the desert and Space Jesus getting shot at by jittery soldiers in Cold War Washington D.C. All this plus Carl Anderson delivering the performance of a lifetime as Judas Iscariot and GORT, the giant silver robot, melting tanks and cannons. This episode has Philena singing "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and Bob saying "Gort Klaatu Barada Nikto" to make her stop. What's the Buzz? We are buzzed. Before we get into the High Holiday weed pairings, Bob reviews FREAKY TALES, a movie that's hopefully still playing somewhere, because you should get really high and see it. Cory fills us in on his big move to Arkansas where he has found a wonderland of storied fast food chains that we do not have in California, Philena fills us in on the new build your own icecream sandwich joint in the Valley, and Bob recounts playing for a dive bar filled with Nazi skinheads with the Disneyland fireworks going off in the distance. And if that wasn't enough, we are joined by Sage, who has thoughts on JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. Come back in May for The PhilenApocalypse III in Super 3D with TO WONG FOO, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING! Fast-talking and feisty-looking John Leguizamo has continued to impress movie audiences with his versatility: he can play sensitive and naïve young men, such as Johnny in Hangin' with the Homeboys; cold-blooded killers like Benny Blanco in Carlito's Way; a heroic Army Green Beret, stopping aerial terrorists in Executive Decision; and drag queen Chi-Chi Rodriguez in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.Arguably, not since ill-fated actor and comedian Freddie Prinze starred in the smash TV series Chico and the Man had a youthful Latino personality had such a powerful impact on critics and fans alike. John Alberto Leguizamo Peláez was born July 22, 1960, in Bogotá, Colombia, to Luz Marina Peláez and Alberto Rudolfo Leguizamo. He was a child when his family emigrated to the United States. He was raised in Queens, New York, attended New York University and studied under legendary acting coach Lee Strasberg for only one day before Strasberg passed away. The extroverted Leguizamo started working the comedy club circuit in New York and first appeared in front of the cameras in an episode of Miami Vice. His first film appearance was a small part in Mixed Blood, and he had minor roles in Casualties of War and Die Hard 2 before playing a liquor store thief who shoots Harrison Ford in Regarding Henry. His career really started to soar after his first-rate performance in the independent film Hangin' with the Homeboys as a nervous young teenager from the Bronx out for a night in brightly lit Manhattan with his buddies, facing the career choice of staying in a supermarket or heading off to college and finding out that the girl he loves from afar isn't quite what he thought she was.The year 1991 was also memorable for other reasons, as he hit the stage with his show John Leguizamo: Mambo Mouth, in which he portrayed seven different Latino characters. The witty and incisive show was a smash hit and won the Obie and Outer Circle Critics Award, and later was filmed for HBO, where it picked up a CableACE Award. He returned to the stage two years later with another satirical production poking fun at Latino stereotypes titled John Leguizamo: Spic-O-Rama. It played in Chicago and New York, and won the Drama Desk Award and four CableACE Awards. In 1995 he created and starred in the short-lived TV series House of Buggin', an all-Latino-cast comedy variety show featuring hilarious sketches and comedic routines. The show scored two Emmy nominations and received positive reviews from critics, but it was canceled after only one season. The gifted Leguizamo was still keeping busy in films, with key appearances in Super Mario Bros., Romeo + Juliet and Spawn. In 1998 he made his Broadway debut in John Leguizamo: Freak, a "demi-semi-quasi-pseudo-autobiographical" one-man show, which was filmed for HBO by Spike Lee.Utilizing his distinctive vocal talents, he next voiced a pesky rat in Doctor Dolittle before appearing in the dynamic Spike Lee-directed Summer of Sam as a guilt-ridden womanizer, as the Genie of The Lamp in the exciting Arabian Nights and as Henri DE Toulouse Lautrec in the visually spectacular Moulin Rouge!.He also voiced Sid in the animated Ice Age, co-starred alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in Collateral Damage and directed and starred in the boxing film Undefeated. Subsequently, Leguizamo starred in the remake of the John Carpenter hit Assault on Precinct 13 and George A. Romero's long-awaited fourth "Dead" film, Land of the Dead. There can be no doubt that the remarkably talented Leguizamo has been a breakthrough performer for the Latino community in mainstream Hollywood, in much the same way that Sidney Poitier crashed through celluloid barriers for African-Americans in the early 1960s.Among his many strengths lies his ability to not take his ethnic background too seriously but also to take pride in his Latino heritage. Please enjoy my conversation with John Leguizamo.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

We continue our Camp Cinema season in our fourth episode covering To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995) and Magnolia (1999)Special Guest: Returning Guest, Rotten Tomato approved film critic, Natasha Alvar from Cultured VulturesWhen watching To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, there is an overriding sense of what could have been. Coming out in the mid 1990s, a surprisingly much more open time in American culture, Wong Foo went to number one at the box office. It was a modest hit, but clearly well received by the general public. If this movie was made today, everyone involved would get more death threats than residuals checks. Culture doesn't always move forward, sometimes it backslides.Magnolia is a controversial pick for Camp Cinema. To me, it is the paradigm of what Susan Sontag called Naive Camp in her 1964 essays Notes on Camp. Magnolia is a manically ambition film with a passionate and serious tone. Paul Thomas Anderson, like Cameron Crowe in Vanilla Sky, strived to reach the artistic heavens, but all he did was take on a tour of the sad and lonely people of the San Fernando Valley. Chris and Natasha offer some good counterpoints to my stance.

But when Ms. Vida finds a little Latin boy in tears, she decides to adopt the young protégé, Chi-Chi (John Leguizamo). They trade their roundtrip plane tickets to LA for a cross country trip in a Jayne Mansfield fantasy car. After a run in with the law and breaking down, they find themselves stranded in the middle of nowhere having to wait out the weekend for a car part.
