In this week's episode of "The Veterinary Viewfinder," hosts Dr. Ernie Ward and Beckie Mosser, MPA, RVT, shine a spotlight on a vital yet often overlooked part of veterinary teams—sales representatives. From pharmaceutical, lab, and food reps to distributors and specialty companies, these professionals play a key role in keeping veterinary clinics running smoothly and efficiently. As the end of the year approaches and fresh off National Veterinary Technician Week, many clinics rely on their reps more than ever—often without recognizing their efforts. Dr. Ward and Beckie discuss the unspoken challenges reps face, including feeling undervalued or being taken for granted, especially during busy seasons when clinics call on them for help with events and celebrations. This episode explores the sometimes tricky relationship between clinics and reps, highlighting how veterinarians and staff can become better partners. Tune in to learn how your clinic can foster healthier, more respectful interactions with sales reps and why these unsung heroes deserve more appreciation. Whether you're a clinic owner, technician, or vet, this episode is packed with insights to help strengthen these essential relationships. In this week's episode of "The Veterinary Viewfinder," Dr. Ernie Ward and registered veterinary technician Beckie Mossor tackle an unexpectedly tough topic: the controversy surrounding National Veterinary Technician Week. While this week, from October 13 to 19, is dedicated to celebrating the tireless efforts and vital contributions of credentialed veterinary technicians, not everyone is on board. Beckie shares her perspective on the growing divide within the veterinary community regarding how—and whether—this week should be celebrated. Some argue that National Veterinary Technician Week isn't being properly recognized, while others are even refusing to participate altogether. Dr. Ward and Beckie discuss these issues, expressing concerns about the negativity surrounding what should be a time for unity and appreciation.  Despite the controversies, our hosts highlight inspiring stories of dedicated vet techs and reinforce the true purpose of this week: to honor and uplift credentialed veterinary technicians who are the backbone of veterinary care. Join the conversation as Dr. Ward and Beckie dig into the good, the bad, and the ugly of National Veterinary Technician Week. #veterinary #veterinarytechnician #veterinary #podcast #veterinarypodcast #vettechpodcast #vetpodcast

In this episode, “Underwater Experts: RVTs in the World of Fish Health”, Nora Toney RVT joins our hosts to talk about what it's like being a Registered Veterinary Technician that works with fish. We learn what an RVT's role is in animal health, why they are an essential part of the animal health team, and what a day in the life of a fish RVT looks like. Christine and Nora talk about their experiences as RVTs, how the role can be challenging but also incredibly rewarding, and just plain nerd out about veterinary care for fishes. The month of October is RVT Month in Canada, and the third week of October is National Veterinary Technician Week in the USA. We wish all credentialed technicians an incredible month, and all the best in your essential, diverse roles as part of the animal health team. Keep up the amazing work. This podcast is brought to you by the foxface rabbitfish. The foxface rabbitfish possess a name that seems like an oxymoron. After all, foxes eat rabbits. But the foxface rabbitfish refuses to be labeled. It swims around proudly, displaying its venomous spikes as if to say, “what are you going to do about it human? After all, you named me. In reality, I look more like a yellow raccoon. So whose fault is that?” Cheers to you, foxface rabbitfish, and we're sorry for naming you. Thanks for listening to Gettin' Fishy With It! Happy belated Veterinary Assistant Appreciation Week! February 14-18, 2022 was celebrated by the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center in New York City - and we missed it! This week we take time to not only appreciate our beloved veterinary assistants, but also discuss some of the challenges and opportunities we see in the future of this essential role in veterinary medicine. Hosts Dr. Ernie Ward and Beckie Mossor, RVT share their love and respect for these often unsung heroes of veterinary medicine. The pair discuss some of the prior (unnecessary) drama between celebrating National Veterinary Technician Week and other recognitions for veterinary team members. Dr. Ward emphasizes that, “Celebrating one group doesn't take anything away from another.” Beckie posits on whether or not vet assistants are over- or underutilized in clinics and why “Veterinary State Boards need to get ahead of this issue because private entities already are there.” Both hosts offer setting boundaries and credentialing for veterinary assistants. Beckie stresses the National Veterinary Technician Association's Approved Veterinary Assistant Program (link in notes) and offers her opinions on some of the rapidly developing private programs. Viewfinders, this is another important topic that transcends an “appreciation week.” Share your thoughts and opinions with us! Dr. Ward offers some simple tips for making the AVMA more inclusive and representative of the “American veterinary medical” system. Beckie explains why this is actually important for the future of our profession. …Beckie explains why $15 an hour isn't really a “living wage” and both offer insights into what better pay and benefits for vet techs should - and could - be.
