Should Canada be ashamed of its own history — or honest about it?In this episode of The LeDrew Three Minute Interview, Stephen LeDrew speaks with Mark Johnson, lawyer, columnist, and founder of Save Our History, about how the Town Council refuses to restore a Sir John A. Macdonald statue in Picton, Ontario.Johnson explains that the statue was originally installed through local fundraising and private support, without cost to the municipality. It recognized Macdonald's connection to Picton, where Canada's first prime minister began his legal career. But in 2021, amid national controversy over residential schools and the Kamloops graves misinformation, the statue was removed and placed in storage. Now, Johnson and Save Our History are pushing for the statue to be returned to public view. The conversation covers:Why the Sir John A. Macdonald statue was removed in PictonThe role of activists and local political pressureWhether Canadian history is being erased instead of debatedThe broader trend of removing statues and renaming public spacesThe controversy over historical figures like Macdonald and ChamplainWhy Johnson believes Canadians should learn from history without hiding itAnd whether local politicians are giving in to pressure instead of public opinionLeDrew and Johnson argue that history should be understood in full — not reduced to present-day political slogans. They acknowledge that historical figures were imperfect, but question whether removing statues helps Canadians understand the country's past.Learn more about Save Our History:saveourhistory.caContribute To Information and Debate that is NOT Paid For, and Influenced,ByThe Carney Government:https://paypal.me/3minuteinterviewCheques accepted at:Stephen LeDrew303 Bay StreetToronto, OntarioM5H 2R1Follow Stephen on other social media platforms.https://www.stephenledrew.ca / stephen.ledrew / stephenledrew Hosted on Acast. The Biggest Table
Bacon & Its Cultural Significance with Mark Johnson

The Biggest Table

Host Andrew Camp welcomes historian Mark Johnson, author of “American Bacon,” who explains how his work on Alabama barbecue led him to study bacon's shifting meanings. Johnson describes food as a narrative device for telling difficult histories and highlights a recurring theme of performance, including his claim that modern bacon enthusiasm can resemble minstrel-like impersonation, exemplified by a 1983 New York Times “In Praise of Bacon” cartoon mocking yet admiring a “Georgia mountain man.” The conversation traces bacon's role from a broad term for cured pork in colonial America, both staple and insult, through English associations of respectability with beef and mutton, and early U.S. debates that sometimes reclaimed bacon as humble republican virtue. In the 19th–20th centuries bacon became linked to Southern “backwardness,” fat, and health fears; by 1977 the USDA considered banning it over nitrites/nitrates. Bacon's resurgence is tied to distrust of dietary experts, low-carb culture, fast food, and upscale “rustic” Southern cuisine that can romanticize marginalized peoples without materially benefiting them, prompting discussion of systemic change, food deserts, and “culinary colonialism.”MARK A. JOHNSON, originally from Milwaukee, earned a PhD in history from the University of Alabama. Previously, he earned an MA from the University of Maryland and BA from Purdue University. He currently teaches at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and is the author of An Irresistible History of Alabama Barbecue: From Wood Pit to White Sauce and Rough Tactics: Black Performance in Political Spectacle, 1877–1932. His most recent book is American Bacon: The History of a Food Phenomenon. He resides in Knoxville, TN with his wife, Kate, and two cats, Peri and Remy.Follow Mark on Instagram: @baconscholarBuy American Bacon: The History of a Food PhenomenonFollow Andrew CampFacebook: andrew.camp.9Instagram: @andrewcamp80Substack: @thebiggesttableThis episode of the Biggest Table is brought to you in part by Wild Goose Coffee. On episode 346 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson and AwardsWatch contributors Dan Bayer, Mark Johnson, and Josh Parham to go back 15 years and take a look at the 84th Academy Awards, covering the films of 2011. On this week's retrospective, the AW team returns from Cannes to take a look back at the 84th Oscars, one that was known for having a great selection of films to choose from that the Academy decided to mostly ignore for more middle of the road, safer choices. This lead to a winner that is not remembered as much for a film that defined the year, both from a critical and commercial aspect, and also lead to one of the worst wins in the Best Actress category. So given the nature of the show and the game played by the AW team, change is a coming for 2011, as the following films were mentioned over the courses of lengthy discussions over every category; Weekend, Contagion, Shame, Melancholia, Crazy Stupid Love, Take Shelter, Killer Joe, The Skin I Live In, 50/50, as well as films that were already nominees getting more love like Moneyball, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Warrior, The Tree of Life, Drive, Bridesmaids, and more. In their in-depth discussion, the AW team talked about the film year of 2011, briefly discuss talk about The Artist as a Best Picture winner, and how that speaks to the legacy of their nominates and or wins, do an extensive conversation over the below the line categories and nominees for the year, and then the new version of the AW Shoulda Woulda Coulda game, where instead of individual replacements, they must decide as a group who the nominees and winners should be in the top eight categories. The rules of the game state they can only replace two of the nominees that year from each category, except in Best Picture, where the group could replace up to four films to make up the final set of five nominated films. Like past retrospective episodes, it was a fascinating, fun conversation including spirited debates, alliances, vote swinging, celebrating various movies, performances that aren't normally talked about and more that we all hope you enjoy. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. You can also listen on the AW YouTube page. This podcast runs 2h52m. We will be back in next week for a review round-up episode discussing some of the newest releases in theaters like Obsession, Backrooms, Masters of the Universe, Power Ballad, Blue Film, Blue Heron, and more. Minnesota lawmakers are filling in the details of a legislative budget agreement struck this week and will have to hustle to pass the bills needed to enact it.If they do, Minnesotans will see reductions in their vehicle registration, help with rising property taxes, continuation of a lead pipe replacement push and more. A key hospital in Minneapolis would get a lifeline and counties would get money to replace old technology that makes running programs difficult and fraud more of a risk. The Legislature was tasked with a compact agenda and it looks like that is what will result. Items that were seen as politically problematic were kept to the side in favor of proposals that could get bipartisan buy-in. MPR News politics editor Brian Bakst talks with the Minnesota's four caucus leaders about how a session-ending agreement came together — two DFLers and two Republicans. Then, a check-in with our state Capitol team, and what they're picking up on, as the Legislature inches closer to its conclusion. Guests:Rep. Lisa Demuth, of Cold Spring, is a Republican and the speaker of the Minnesota House.Rep. Zack Stephenson, of Coon Rapids, is the DFL caucus leader for the Minnesota House. Sen. Erin Murphy, of St. Paul, is the DFL Senate majority leader. Sen. Mark Johnson, of East Grand Forks, is the Republican Senate minority leader. Send Kevin a Text MessageMark Johnson, Academy Award-winning producer of Rain Man and Emmy Award-winning executive producer of Breaking Bad, joins host Kevin Goetz for a conversation about a career defined by creative restlessness and uncommon decency. The interview ranges from his transformative partnership with Barry Levinson, which produced Diner, The Natural, and Good Morning Vietnam, to shepherding beloved films like The Notebook, A Little Princess, Donnie Brasco, and Galaxy Quest to championing an unknown writer named Vince Gilligan, Johnson reflects on what it means to serve a director's vision, why he refuses to make the same movie twice, and how audience testing changed the way he thinks about filmmaking.Never the Same Movie Twice (02:14): Johnson explains his resistance to repeating himself across genres. From Galaxy Quest to The Notebook to Breaking Bad, he compares his varied tastes to simply deciding what he wants for breakfast.Meeting Barry Levinson (04:07): Johnson recalls how a chance connection on the Mel Brooks comedy launched one of Hollywood's most fruitful producing partnerships, and what he learned from working alongside a director who always began with character. The Lesson of Good Morning Vietnam (13:12): Johnson describes how audience testing transformed his understanding of filmmaking, including working with the mercurial and brilliant Robin Williams and the pivotal decision to restore a scene with J.T. Walsh.Winning the Oscar for Rain Man (18:29): Johnson reflects on the bittersweet experience of winning Best Picture for a film he credits largely to others, Tom Cruise's underappreciated subtlety in the role, and the one name he forgot to thank from the podium. The Closest Thing to a Perfect Movie (26:08): Johnson singles out Alfonso Cuarón's A Little Princess as the film he holds most dear as a lesson in collaborative craftsmanship.Discovering Vince Gilligan (30:06): In 1988, Johnson read a script by an unknown writer at a Virginia Film Festival jury and knew immediately he was in the presence of singular talent. He details how he championed Gilligan for years before Breaking Bad made the world take notice. The Producer's True Role (38:57): Johnson shares what he hopes listeners take away — that his passion for moviemaking is as alive today as when he started, and that a producer's job is never to claim ownership of a film, but to help a director realize their vision.Host: Kevin GoetzGuest: Mark JohnsonProducer: Kari CampanoWriters: Kevin Goetz, Darlene Hayman, and Kari CampanoAudio Engineer: Gary Forbes (DG Entertainment)For more information about Mark Johnson:Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Johnson_(producer)IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0425741/LFor more information about Kevin Goetz:- Website: www.KevinGoetz360.com- Audienceology Book: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Audience-ology/Kevin-Goetz/9781982186678- How to Score in Hollywood: https://www.amazon.com/How-Score-Hollywood-Secrets-Business/dp/198218986X/- Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Substack: @KevinGoetz360- LinkedIn @Kevin Goetz- Screen Engine/ASI Website: www.ScreenEngineASI.com

Ninja Coaching Coast To Coast
The Pivot from Buying Leads to Building Relationships

Ninja Coaching Coast To Coast

In this episode, Eric Thompson interviews Ryan Craig of Traverse City, Michigan, along with his Ninja Coach Mark Johnson, to explore a powerful transformation: pivoting from a cold lead centric business to a relationship based Ninja business. Ryan previously ran a high pressure lead generation operation with a large team and roughly 35,000 dollars per month in overhead, including about 10,000 dollars per month spent on cold internet leads. The model produced transactions, but it also created constant stress, fragmented attention, and a life where Ryan was physically present with his family but mentally tied to the phone. After discovering Ninja Selling while listening to the book with his wife, Ryan realized there was a different way to build a real estate career, one centered on relationships rather than relentless lead conversion. In 2025 he fully committed to the Ninja approach with coaching support from Mark Johnson. The result was dramatic: Ryan produced 722,000 dollars in gross commission income from 47 transactions and 34 million in volume, while simultaneously reducing his monthly overhead by about 25,000 dollars. Ryan credits the transformation to mindset, structure, and consistent implementation of the Ninja Nine habits. Instead of chasing cold leads, he began focusing on handwritten notes, proactive relationship calls, gratitude, and intentional conversations with people who already knew and trusted him. Mark helped him slow down, eliminate unnecessary commitments, and prioritize meaningful interactions over constant activity. The shift not only improved his income but restored balance in his life, allowing him to be present with his wife and five children. Ryan's story illustrates how focusing on relationships, consistency, and purpose can produce both better business results and a better life. Key Takeaways Cold lead generation can create a false sense of productivity while increasing stress and reducing meaningful relationships High overhead business models often hide the true cost of lead driven systems Pivoting to a sphere based business dramatically increases income per hour and reduces overhead Relationship calls feel very different from cold lead calls because the trust already exists Handwritten notes and proactive conversations create compounding opportunities Consistent Ninja Nine habits create momentum and confidence Coaching provides clarity, accountability, and perspective during major business transitions Slowing down can actually accelerate growth by focusing energy on the right activities Addition through subtraction is often the fastest way to improve both life and business Fragmentation and constant responsiveness create anxiety, while proactive systems restore control Real estate success does not require working constantly, it requires working intentionally Relationships that already exist are often the most overlooked source of business Memorable Quotes "I bought the book for my wife and it turned out to be mine." "The cold lead style of business is an illusion." "You can only go so far before you run out of gas." "I felt like a robot being told where to go and what to do." "My kids would try to tell me about their day and I'd hold up one finger and say one more minute." "I realized 87 percent of my business had always come from people I knew." "My phone used to ring nonstop. Now it hardly rings at all." "I used to feel fragmented. Now everything feels intentional." "Addition through subtraction changed everything." "The more things I cut out, the more the right things showed up." "Doing the work consistently is what made the difference."
