Diabetes can damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and heart, and is linked to some types of cancer. Preventing diabetes and taking charge of your health as soon as possible after diagnosis may help you prevent these health problems. This can include building healthy lifestyle habits, taking medicines on time, managing your stress, and working with your health care team to get the personal care you need. In honor of National Diabetes Month this November, we talk with Dr. Griffin Rodgers to raise awareness about the impacts of diabetes. Next a conversation with Jor-El Caraballo about self-care for men. His Self-Care for Black Men became a popular guidebook with features in Men's Health, Prevention, Self and more. Leaning into that success, Caraballo's guided audio meditation program MEDITATIONS FOR BLACK MEN is filled with unique insights and tools for Black men everywhere to prioritize mental health, empowering listeners to create a deeper connection with their mind, body, and spirit over the course of ten guided meditations. For Black men, self-care too often feels like a luxury. But being in touch with your emotions, deepening sensory awareness, and taking time to quiet the busy mind are essential tools for a healthy lifestyle. Mindfulness can be a pathway to emotional and psychological freedom. Over the course of ten guided meditations, this audio program covers topics such as redefining Black masculinity, connecting with your ancestors, and creating sacred space, as well as physical practices such as breath work and a walking meditation. The program closes with affirmations: short, positive messages to further instill self-confidence and emotional well-being.

This episode of BEHIND THE LENS is a fascinating conversation with director LISA HEPNER and director of photography GUY MOSSMAN as they talk about their new documentary – THE HUMAN TRIAL. Plus, my exclusive interview with writer/director MALI ELFMAN going in-depth talking her feature directorial debut, NEXT EXIT. Joining us live during National Diabetes Month are director LISA HEPNER and director of photography GUY MOSSMAN talking about THE HUMAN TRIAL. Herself a diabetic, this is a very personal project for Lisa. Already an established producer, Lisa moves into the director's chair to take us into the up close and personal world of human clinical trials for a treatment for Type 1 Diabetes. Listen as Lisa and Guy talk about the 7+ year journey of making this documentary, starting with researchers and a biotech company in San Diego, then filming the arduous roller coaster ride of the first two patients in the clinical trial with the good, the bad, and the heartbreaking pain and tears, while also travelling around the globe with the biotech reps seeking much-needed funding to continue research. But first, you'll hear our exclusive interview with writer/director Mali Elfman as we discuss NEXT EXIT! I have had the privilege and pleasure of knowing Mali for about two decades now. It has always been her goal to "make movies" versus "cover movies". For some years now she has been producing projects that range from episodics to shorts to anthologies to features; she's written some shorts and directed a few shorts and episodics. Always consistently honing her craft, she now makes her feature directorial debut with NEXT EXIT. Also written by Mali, the story has powerful themes surrounding grief, life, and death, that give rise to thought and discussion and even some interpersonal reflection, all showcased within a road picture setting (and the road trip in the film is real) boasting wonderful performances – and humor – courtesy of Katie Parker and the scene-stealing Rahul Kohli. An award-worthy first feature, this is a film and a conversation you don't want to miss as we hit the road into the "making of" NEXT EXIT. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

November is National Diabetes Month and Dr. John Poothullil joins host Denise Griffitts to share 4 revolutionary ideas to prevent diabetes, lose weight, and enjoy food. Eat. Chew. Live. HOW you eat matters more than WHAT you eat. Dr. Poothullil has written articles on hunger and satiation, weight loss, diabetes, and the senses of taste and smell. His articles have been published in medical journals such as Physiology and Behavior, Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews, Journal of Women’s Health, Journal of Applied Research, Nutrition, and Nutritional Neuroscience. His work has also been quoted in Woman’s Day, Fitness, Redbook & Woman’s World Dr. John became interested in understanding the causes of and interconnections between hunger, satiation, and weight gain. His interest turned into a passion and a multi-decade personal study and research project that led him to read many medical journal articles, medical textbooks, and other scholarly works in biology, biochemistry, physiology, endocrinology, and cellular metabolic functions. This eventually guided Dr. Poothullil to investigate the theory of insulin resistance as it relates to diabetes. He continued researching the linkage between obesity, diabetes, and cancer and developed additional insights into the causes of childhood and adult cancer and possible treatments involving low-carbohydrate diets to initiate starving of cancer cells by removing their main source of energy – glucose from grains. Did you know that November is National Diabetes Month? More than 88 million American adults have pre-diabetes, or blood sugar levels that are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as Type 2 Diabetes. The percentages of US adults living with diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes is 22% in the Latinx community, 20% in the Black community, and 19% in the Asian community. This is something that we need to take seriously. In this week's episode of Financial Fridays, we look at the broader implications of lifestyle choices and habits that can raise your risk of becoming pre-diabetic or of getting Type 2 Diabetes. As Thanksgiving and the holidays approach, have you been thinking: What's the best way to celebrate? What’s the best way to gather in ways that are safe? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette gets personal about her own concerns and fears about meeting up with her family. To help alleviate feelings of confusion and doubt, as well as anxiety and fear, she also shares some EFT-Tapping exercises you can use to calm your nerves as you make decisions about the upcoming week. We also want to wish you and yours an early Happy Thanksgiving! May you be happy. May you be healthy. May you be safe. May you be loved. If you enjoyed this episode, why not share it on Instagram and tag @coach_colette! She’ll be sure to share your comments and big takeaways on her Instagram Stories. Host JC Scott speaks with Amy Bricker, Senior Vice President of Health Services Supply Chain at Express Scripts and previous commissioner for MedPac. November is National Diabetes Month, and the discussion this week revolves around how PBMs help keep the costs of insulin down and improve patient care. Getting Support for Diabetes in AmericaList prices for insulin have not gone down, leaving some diabetes patients with high costs for the live-saving medicine, either as high insurance co-pays or deductibles or the high cost of insulin itself. While there have been some improvements in delivery technology and formulations, Bricker points out that these innovations don't justify the high prices pharmaceutical companies continue to charge. To some extent, the lack of competition in the market is causing this, which is why PBMs are so important. How Express Scripts is HelpingLast year Express Scripts saw a 5% decrease in spending from those enrolled in their clinical solution, thanks in part to discounts but more critically through leveraging formularies, utilization, and diabetes care value program that ensures patients get complete care, communicated in ways that work best for them. The Effects of Coupon and Discount ProgramsBricker argues that well-intentioned programs like 340B are out of control and no longer helping patients. She believes this and other coupon programs require major reform or even elimination, because they operate in the background and disrupt formularies.CMS Part D Senior Savings ModelThe Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services established a voluntary Part D plan that limits insulin's cost share to $35 a month per beneficiary. Approximately a third of Medicare beneficiaries are affected by diabetes and companies such as Express Scripts and Cigna will participate in this program. While Medicare Part D definitely needs reform, steps such as these are a great starting point and crucial to those within the program. What Does the Future Look Like?Bricker says we need to encourage manufacturers to lower prices, but that needs to be encouraged by legislation or regulation — while always keeping the patient top of mind. She advocates for Part D reform to establish more programs like the #35/month cost share. You can subscribe to The Pharmacy Benefit on Spotify, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, and all other major platforms.

For the first episode of our Second Season, we introduce US James Dyson Award winner, Thipok “Poom” Cholsaipant and his invention AeroLyze, the world's first breath glucometer for people with prediabetes. In today’s episode Poom Cholsaipant and Andrea Alexa Smith talk about the thought process for designing Aerolyze, the emphasis on user experience, and the power of the breath as a simple and profound gift we all share. We discuss creating achievable habits of self-care, adaptability in technology with the use of AI, making Aerolyze a sustainable product, creating sustainable lifestyle habits, and the significant reduced waste and costs associated with diabetes products such as shoes, wipes, test strips ---and of course the compound future costs of related disease such as heart, stroke, and glaucoma. Poom is someone I respect for his absolute genius hands on approach to creating and looking to solutions for a problem that affects millions of Americans and existed in his own family- Type 2 diabetes. Poom’s democratization of design and vision for creating an affordable and accessible product for the people who need it most, including athletes and minority populations, is something we share a deep appreciation for. Poom is an award-winning industrial designer and a recent graduate of The University of Washington. Poom has designed a variety of lifestyle products including tennis sneakers, lampshades, an AR head set and time management tools. We laud The James Dyson Foundation, The James Dyson Award, Dyson and Sir James Dyson for the incredible due diligence in selecting and recognizing the potential of these young engineers ground breaking inventions like Poom’s Aerolyze. The James Dyson Foundation is the non-profit arm of Dyson, whose engineers are encouraging and supporting these young and bright design engineers who offer solutions to the problems of tomorrow to gain the confidence and resources to bring their products to life. They become authors, so many of them are musicians and can cook up a pretty mean plate of Gordon Ramsey like dinners. Oh wait. Not Stacey Simms. She laughs out loud when talking about that little room with hot and cold things. Her strength is in that connection with the community. Instead of privately dealing with Types 1 and 2 Diabetes in her family she chose to learn about it. When I say it. I mean everything that is lived out every day from the medicines to machines and beyond. It started as a blog. Grew to a book. Now a podcast. See what I mean. Broadcasters are connectors. Yeah, we have a fairly lengthy conversation. It’s not only about November being National Diabetes Month. We swap real radio stories, what it’s like when you can’t turn off creativity, we share our personal experiences with September 11th. A lot of incredible talk in an age that’s completely addicted to letting our thumbs do the communicating.

Explore Bias, Smash Patriarchy, Dig Devo! Content Warning: Sexual Harassment, Sexual Assault, Language (The Leftscape... Now with Even More Cursing!) What are the tapes that run in your head? Which beliefs and thought patterns are hidden in your psyche that show up and catch you unaware? What is the assumption behind what you are drawn to and what you avoid? Which preferences are you comfortable with? Which are prejudices that you work to release? Sparked by the main topic in "When Things Blow Up (Episode 15)," Robin Renée, Mary McGinley, and Wendy Sheridan reflect on some of their own personal biases regarding gender, intelligence, race, ethnicity, and culture. The week's news, still dominated by the Kavanaugh nomination and its fallout, includes the protests at Yale by those who oppose the nomination, and the power and personal impact of #whyididntreport. The conversation morphs into a righteous rant on sexual harassment in the workplace and anywhere/everywhere else. Wendy is mad as hell, and for good reason. The show begins by welcoming October with mentions of only a sampling of the month's observances: Self-Promotion Month, Vegetarian Month, Squirrel Awareness Month, Bat Appreciation Month, World Menopause Month, Feral Hog Month, and Sarcasm Month are a few.
