Allison (Alli) Fender grew up in the gorgeous San Diego backcountry on a small Dairy and Beef operation. She attended San Diego Mesa College and played soccer on the women's team while attending the Animal Health program offered there. In 2014, she obtained her Associate of Science Degree in Animal Health Technology and became licensed as a Registered Veterinary Technician. She worked in several small animal hospitals in the area. A month after graduation in 2014, she and her high school sweetheart were married on Mesa Chiquita Ranch, where she grew up. Her dad gifted her and her husband, Bryce, ten bred heifers, which was the start of their beef herd. Flying F Ranch was established in 2020 after Bryce and Alli created the brand and business selling beef directly to San Diego consumers. Their motto is “We Give a Flying F About BEEF.” In 2021, they added Registered Black Angus cattle into their herd to improve carcass quality. The couple learned more about genetics and began breeding more mindfully, propelling their beef business to a higher level. The couple currently sells Black Angus Beef direct to consumer as whole/half shares and USDA retail at local farmer's markets. They recently started offering ranch to table experiences for San Diego locals to come enjoy a 5 course beef inspired meal curated by a local chef. They bring in local wineries and breweries to pair with the menu. The dinners are on open pastures on the ranch with cattle grazing nearby. Bryce and Alli raise their two sons, Warren and Wells, on the ranch together. They believe raising the next generation beside them will teach the young boys valuable life lessons and memories. Alli is an active member and Vice President of the San Diego CowBelles and helps with local Ag in the Classroom lessons, Beef Promotion, and Advocacy for our industry. I have graduated from THE Fort Valley State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Veterinary Technology. I have worked in various veterinary settings from the largest multi-specialty emergency hospital to general practices, other referral hospitals, and university settings such as the University of Georgia's Veterinary Teaching Hospital. When not working, I have volunteered my time at wildlife conservation centers, adoption agencies, dog daycare, cat sanctuaries, and with the Boys and Girls Club as well as Habitat for Humanity. Giving back and working with the community has always been another passion for me. It makes my heart happy to be able to be a blessing for someone else. (see what I did there). After being a veterinary technician for 7 years, I began Happy Hearts Pet Care as a mobile grooming service in 2016 and moved to a brick and mortar location in 2022. I also founded PETLANTA, a community of pet care professionals in Atlanta that come to support each other, network, teach, and give back to the community. I now have the opportunity to share my love of animals with my clients and pet owners all over the Stone Mountain and Metro Atlanta area.  Links: Previously on: https://www.petsitterconfessional.com/episodes/224 Website: happyheartspcs.com Youtube: youtube.com/channel/UC7v4FA7Qs1C3BaVGJ2VB2bQ Facebook: facebook.com/happyheartspetcareatl Instagram: instagram.com/happyheartspetcareatl/ PETLANTA: https://petlanta.org Buy PSC Merch Give us a call! 70+ episdoes into the podcast, and not a single episode with a vet nurse. Shame on us! But we're changing that with this episode through a conversation with a vet tech who is leading the charge into the future of vet nursing. Kenichiro Yagi is Chief Veterinary Nursing Office at the Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG), where his role is to help develop career pathways in veterinary nursing and raising nursing care standards and competency. Ken is a Registered Veterinary Technician and Veterinary Technician Specialist in Emergency and Critical Care and Small Animal Internal Medicine with a Master's Degree in Veterinary Sciences. He also serves as program director for the Recover Initiative, a global effort to standardise how veterinary CPR is performed around the world. He's received a whole host of awards, including veterinary technician of the year in 2016, and he's been pushing the standards of nursing for two decades through his teaching and training, speaking and writing. "There's a lot more to veterinary medicine than just being a vet, and there's a lot more care that the patients need. And I've certainly created my own career out of it." So who's this episode for? Well, we've always been a podcast primarily for vets, and that hasn't changed. We'd love for this conversation to help open the eyes of our vets to the possibilities, the talent and the passion that is right under your nose and to give you some ideas of what that talent is capable of and how you can help steer it. But it's definitely also an episode for nurses and techs. I challenge you as a nurse to listen to this and NOT feel the desire to find new ways to extend yourself and to make even more of a difference! Ken's story is a real eye-opener about what is possible in your nursing career in the right environment. Also - who's joining us live in Noosa in November with Prof David Church and Prof Jill Maddison for what promises to e the most fun vet event of the year?! In this week's episode of That Vet Life Podcast host, Dr. Moriah McCauley is joined with vet techs, Peter Carlos and Jaycee Leonardo. Over the past 2 years, the dynamic duo has been utilizing social media (in particular TikTok and Instagram) to educate both pet owners and people within the veterinary industry. On their TikTok account, which has over 2 million followers, Peter and Jaycee have created a space to educate all on what veterinary techniques do and offer up their best tips and tricks when caring for their patients. The duo's entry into vet tech took slightly different routes and offer an important reminder that no one way is best. Whilst Peter's career in the animal and veterinary industry began at Petco - which he started working at during his junior year of high school and continued after graduating - it wasn't until later when Peter decided to pursue veterinary technician courses. After becoming a Registered Veterinary Technician, Peter began working at Taylor ER Veterinary Emergency Hospital. It was here that he first met Jaycee. Aforementioned, Jaycee's journey into veterinary medicine, took a different route. Jaycee aspired to be a veterinarian from a young age, however, once at high school Jaycee enrolled in local veterinary technician classes and Jaycee decided to pursue a career as a veterinary technician. Jaycee joined Taylor ER Veterinary Emergency Hospital as a volunteer aged 16, before being offered a full-time job there 2 years later. Since then, the pair joined forces to create educational content through social media. In this episode, Dr. Moriah, Peter, and Jaycee discuss the role of a veterinary technician, how clients view them differently, and how we can push for veterinary technicians to be seen as having the same level of importance as veterinarians.

Today, I am happy to have the privilege of talking to Angie Arora and Kirsti Clarida, two professionals who I got introduced to through the Veterinary Social Work Program. Angie is a registered social worker from Toronto, Canada. She gears much of her practice around pet loss bereavement and building compassion resilience in animal care professionals. Kirsti is a registered veterinary technician in Ontario, Canada, and she has done a lot of advocacy work to increase awareness around the importance of the roles of Registered Veterinary Technicians in veterinary medicine. Kristi and Angie got together, and they have been doing a lot of research and putting some hard work into compiling a veterinary training manual to help people deal with any challenges related to their relationship with animals.  Although working with animals can be fulfilling and rewarding, it can also be physically and emotionally exhausting. Angie and Kirsti are joining me today to discuss the work they are doing in the field, which includes pet loss and bereavement, compassion fatigue, and strengthening compassion resilience. Be sure to stay tuned today to hear what Angie and Kirsti have to share about reinforcing how people relate to animals. Show highlights: The two life experiences that came together for Angie, that started her journey. Angie explains what a veterinary social worker does. Angie discusses the role she plays as a Pet Loss Support Group Facilitator with VetVine. Kirsti talks about the work she's been doing to increase awareness of the challenges of veterinary technicians. How Angie and Kirsti were brought together, their relationship, and the kind of work they are doing together. About the research that they did through Seneca College, their goal, and the result that ensued. Kirsti shares some profound statistics from their research. Pet loss with species other than dogs and cats, and the euthanasia process. What dysthanasia is, and how to deal with it. What they learned about hospice and palliative care during their study. The importance of addressing caregiver fatigue and burnout. Supporting children in their grief. What veterinary practices can do with the guidelines that Kirsti and Angie have made available. Angie and Kirsti's Bios: Angie Arora is a registered Social Worker from Toronto, Canada, with over 15 years of experience in the areas of pet loss and veterinary compassion resilience. She has worked as a hospital Veterinary Social Worker, facilitated community-based pet loss support groups, and engaged in media campaigns to reduce the stigma associated with pet loss. She is on the inaugural Board of the International Association of Veterinary Social Work and serves as a Pet Loss Support Group Facilitator with VetVine. Angie is a Professor with Seneca College's Social Service Worker Program. Her social work practice has also focused on issues of gender-based violence with a specific focus on immigrant and refugee communities. Also, she is a Certified Compassion Fatigue Specialist with the Traumatology Institute and works with the veterinary industry to build wellness through strengthening compassion resilience. Angie obtained her Bachelor of Social Work from Ryerson University and Masters of Social Work from York University.   Kirsti Clarida has been a proud Registered Veterinary Technician since graduating from Seneca College in 1999. With service in small animal, emergency, and locum veterinary practice, she brings a wealth of experience to her current role as Coordinator of the Veterinary Technician Program at Seneca College. She is also the former Communications Manager of the Ontario Association of the Veterinary Technicians (OAVT) creating campaigns to increase awareness of the important roles RVTs play in veterinary medicine in Ontario. GUEST: Heather Sartorelli is a Registered Veterinary Technician, Fear Free Certified and the Lead Consultant with Sartorelli Consulting Services. She specializes in helping spay/neuter clinics, moving them to a high-quality, high-volume level by working closely with the surgical and management teams. She has 18 years of spay/neuter experience and 10 years of shelter experience. She has worked as manager of Clinic Mentorship Programs for Humane Alliance/ASPCA Spay Neuter Alliance and as the medical manager and lead surgery technician at SPCA Tampa Bay. MAIN QUESTION: What advice would you have for clinics to function effectively and efficiently amid this current public health crisis? TAKEAWAYS: * Make sure staff is feeling safe and healthy. You can do this in a number of ways: ~ Hold a brief team meeting to start each day where people can share concerns and information. ~ Cross-train to be able to better handle absences. ~ Be supportive of staff who don’t feel comfortable doing a task for safety reasons. ~ Create a culture that doesn’t tolerate gossip. ~ Make change easier to embrace by making it fun (the new policy bingo game Heather mentioned is an example). ~ Practice recommended workplace COVID-19 prevention measures. ~ Create visual reminders and provide supplies throughout the facility that make compliance with coronavirus safety measures easy. This might include 6-foot markings on the floor of high traffic areas, multiple cleanings of common areas throughout the workday, and providing Plexiglas or clear shower curtain dividers to provide separation of work areas. * Create a safe environment for client and patient interactions: ~ Go paperless as much as possible ~ Implement an efficient tight process for curbside intake and discharge, including after-care instructions. ~ Put simple, clear process details online so that clients know what to expect. LINKS: * Heather Sartorelli’s Clinic Mentorship Services: https://clinicmentorshipservices.com  * Scheduling apps: ~ Clinic HQ https://clinichq.com, which offers a free year if organization has received a #SpayTogether grant ~ TimeTap https://www.timetap.com ~ 10to8 https://10to8.com  * Bingo card sample for helping staff adopt new policies and procedures https://www.humanenetwork.org/resources. Each of these six RVT's has a unique story to share; which is fitting and should be encouraging to others who want to work in this field. There is not just one path that you have to take to obtain success. And the stories these ladies tell is not representative even of the only paths one can take, either. We are sure there are plenty of others out there who would also have their own unique tale to tell. We should start by stating that our ultimate goal with any employee that comes to us without previous experience is to have them work their way up our version of the corporate ladder. That means starting as a kennel attendant: that gives us the opportunity to observe their work ethic and for them to learn about things like: pet behaviors, proper restraint for treatments and services, medications and how to properly administer some of them and what our hospital’s unique culture is and how to not only work within that culture, but to be a positive contributor to it, as well. Successful kennel attendants have the opportunity given to them to move into our reception team. Whereas the work in kennel is 90% focused on animal-related issues, that gets flipped in reception to 90% working with those pets’ human owners. The work and tasks that got touched on previously, are now more fully saturating their knowledge-base in reception, as these staff members have to effectively communicate so many situations and topics to our clients. For those who want to make the subsequent move into our treatment area, their communication and knowledge skills are thoroughly analyzed before they are able to be looked at for that move. Our hospital prides itself on “practicing what we preach” with this recipe for success. Currently, 4 people in our treatment staff worked previously in reception at APCC and 4 worked in kennel. Out of our 8 receptionists, 4 of them previously worked in kennel. We absolutely feel the benefits of this experience within our hospital. That extends not only to each individual’s level of knowledge with a myriad of things, but also with how well our staff works together… which is of the utmost importance to our success. Amanda, the first person you hear from in this episode, started at our hospital as a 17 year old, still attending high school, as a part time kennel attendant. Amanda was actually one of the very few who got asked to become one of our treatment staff members without spending any time as a receptionist. She spent about 2 years working in treatment before she started going to school to further her abilities here. Kaitlin came to us as an experienced technician from another local hospital. She knew during her senior year in high school that this was what she wanted to do. Following time at Saddleback College, she started working at a local veterinary hospital before she enrolled in a specialty school and took her state and national tests to become an RVT. Hunter came to our hospital from working in clothing retail and made the jump to working as part of our kennel team. It didn’t take long for everyone to recognize her superior customer service skills and she moved into reception. Hunter was one of those people who got moved as a tremendous member of the reception team into the treatment team. She spent roughly 3 years as a technician before she completed her schooling and passed her tests to become an official RVT. Cristie’s path was completely unique in comparison to the others here. She actually went to Saddleback and transferred to Cal Poly Pomona and obtained her bachelor’s degree in animal health science. While she was at Cal Poly Pomona, she completed 4 separate internships in animal hospitals. Independently, she took the state and national tests following that and became a Registered Veterinary Technician prior to becoming part of the APCC team. Lauren also has a very unique path unlike her fellow RVT’s. We met Lauren as she inquired about completing her internship for a local veterinary university. She was welcomed into APCC to complete her required hours as an unpaid intern. During that time, the feeling of wanting to take our working relationship with Lauren to the next level was mutual. We hired her immediately following her graduation and shortly thereafter, she took and passed her tests to become an RVT. Samantha rounds out our conversations on the podcast, fittingly. She is the longest running member of the hospital staff, outside of the Owner, Dr. Wheaton. Samantha was hired as a receptionist way back in the summer of 2005. She had already “paid her dues” as a kennel person, having worked at a grooming facility during her high school years. It wasn’t long before Samantha was forcing the conversation to look at moving her into the treatment team, based on her desire to be a technician as well as her overall fantastic work ethic and ability to work well with everyone: staff and clients alike. Nothing has changed since her move to treatment: Samantha remains an excellent example of what Alicia Pet Care Center has always stood for in its core values: providing the absolute best care for our patients while being extremely dedicated to assisting in the education of our clients on the how’s and why’s of our doctors’ plans for treatment.
