This week on the Veterinary Viewfinder, Dr. Ernie Ward and Beckie Mossor, MPA, RVT, talk with Michelle Crew, a credentialed LVT and the entrepreneur behind The Mobile Vet Tech, about building a career outside the traditional clinic setting. After losing what she thought was her “unicorn job” during COVID, Michelle began offering in-home services such as nail trims and anal gland expression, and found a new way to support pets, clients, and other veterinary professionals. Michelle shares what she has learned about starting slowly, setting client boundaries, staying safe on house calls, protecting mental health, and redefining what it means to work “at the top of your license.” The conversation also highlights her work helping other veterinary technicians through TikTok, The Unattached Facebook group, and Endless Journeys: The Vet Tech Odyssey Podcast. For vet techs, assistants, practice managers, and veterinarians, this episode offers a practical, encouraging look at entrepreneurship, alternative career paths, and the many ways credentialed professionals can make an impact. #VeterinaryMedicine #VetTechLife #CredentialedVetTech #MobileVetTech #VeterinaryViewfinder

Caffeinators, to finish our Mental Health Awareness Month series, we finally connected with Tosha Zimmerman! We were working on having Tosha as a guest a few years ago but she lost her job and she moved into a different field. We've wanted to talk to her for a long time, and time was right to talk about looking for work in another field, and transferability of skills and all that was the focus for our series! And what a great conversation through all of that. Many of us have peaked over the fence at other professions but often think none of our skills are transferrable, or we'll have to start at the bottom, or nobody will hire us. News flash: Many of are skills transfer quite well, we can be trained to do anything, some professions bottom of the totem pole is higher than our top, and we're hirable. So, if you find yourself thinking it's time to move on from this career, this episode is a must-listen. Caffeinators, if you've been following us for a while, you may remember an episode from FIVE years ago with April F. Bays. Well, she has left the profession, and we focus this episode on the why and the what now. We've long avoided this topic because we didn't want to be seen as "encouraging" people to leave the field. But for some, that may be the last option to save their sanity. We see lots of discussion surrounding the ideas that "you'll have to start at the bottom" or "none of my skills are transferrable", etc. Some of that may be correct, some not so much. You were trained once, and you can be again. AND, the top of our field may just be entry level somewhere else. At our last staff meeting, we went through the AVECCTN membership list and reached out to everyone that works in a country we hadn't featured yet. Miklós Róth from Hungary was the first to write back and what a fun conversation this is. We talked about what vet med looks like in Hungary, his mentor who is the lone specialist veterinarian in the country, lack of formal education, all of it. Miki shared with us how he built his knowledge and skills base by traveling to other countries to learn, and also how he discovered becoming a VTS and what that process looked like and the difficulties he encountered-spoiler alert, he wrote 75 CASE REPORTS. Vet Tech Advocacy Evolves: Inside the AACVT Movement

Veterinary Viewfinder Podcast

In this episode, Dr. Ernie Ward talks with co-host Beckie Mossor, MPA, RVT, about the launch of the American Association of Credentialed Veterinary Technicians (AACVT.org), a new organization she co-founded with Ryan Frazier, LVT, BS, MBA. Their goal is not to replace or compete with existing veterinary groups, but to strengthen the profession by filling gaps that many credentialed technicians still experience. Becky and Ryan built AACVT around a simple idea: the profession needs more support, more tools, and more ways for technicians to take action, especially at the state level. Rather than focusing only on awareness, AACVT is designed to provide practical resources, advocacy guidance, and a centralized space where technicians and veterinary teams can connect and grow. The conversation highlights a shift in mindset. This is about adding capacity, not dividing it. By working alongside existing organizations and empowering individuals, AACVT aims to raise the overall standard for technician utilization, recognition, and professional development. For veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and practice leaders, this episode offers a clear look at how collaboration, not competition, may drive the next phase of progress in veterinary medicine. #VeterinaryMedicine #VetTechLife #VetMedCommunity #CredentialedVetTech #VetTeam

Dialysis, TPE, hemoperfusion, etc. She shared a few crazy cases she's worked on recently and what her role is in this setting and how she helps manage these patients, and data collection for research. Not very many technicians have access to that level veterinary care, let alone ever work on a patient that needs it, but this is her every day. Caffeinators, are you ready to talk AI in veterinary medicine? Are you wondering if and how it can help you in your work as a veterinary technician? Then this is the episode for you! We recently sat down with Robyn Sutton to talk all things AI in vet med. Robyn is an RVT, VTS(ECC) but has left clinical practice and now works for a veterinary AI company. We talked how it can improve our workflows, its limitations, and the pitfalls of AI. This was a really cool discussion. And if you're one of the few to have never used AI like yours truly, this episode will blow your mind space. Caffeinators, do you feel ... "vintage"? This episode is for you. What is vintage, you ask? There's no specific age or length of time in the field, rather, it's more how your body feels physically after working in this field. Do you have more than one joint that pops when you get off the floor? You're vintage. Do you wear special shoes or wear inserts to help your back? You're vintage. and on and on. Our friend Karen Roach came back by to talk to us about all things "being vintage" as a veterinary technician. If you're not quite vintage yet, you'll get a few good laughs at our expense, but if you can relate, you'll feel it in your bones and joints. Don't miss it!
