All Michelle Slater ever wanted was to have a dog of her own with whom she felt a special connection and bond.  And her German Shepherd, Brady, was that dog.  In fact, Michelle even started learning animal communication to enhance her connection with Brady – something that she kept to herself, concerned her fellow professors in academia wouldn't understand or would ridicule. However, after a rollercoaster of adventures, Brady was struck with a life-threatening illness at only 5 years old.  He spent months living at a vet hospital – where Michelle often slept on the floor next to him at night. Michelle again turns to animal communication to guide her – with Brady's input – to make the best decisions for his health during this scary time.  And Brady's profound messages are lessons for all of us. Exploring topics of grief, loss – both human and animal – and the human-animal bond, Michelle's book Soulmate Dog is part memoir and part essay.  If you've ever been curious about how people have viewed animal telepathy over the years, it's fascinating! The Human Animal Bond, and The Power of Visual Storytelling in Pet Care

The Human-Animal Bond. We've all seen it, even if we haven't realized it yet. Look around you, and in the course of a given day, I would bet that it's impossible not to see evidence of it somewhere. It's there in the gentle nudge of a dog waiting patiently for its owner outside a store, in the contented purr of a cat curled up on a sunny windowsill, and in the quiet companionship of a horse and rider silhouetted against the setting sun. It's power is felt in the shared happiness both that both dogs and pet owners derive from going on walks, or hikes, or ski adventures together. This bond transcends the simple acts of care and companionship; it's a profound connection that speaks to something deep within us all. It's a shared look of understanding, a comfort that needs no words, a mutual respect that grows over time. The human-animal bond is a testament to the empathy and kinship we are capable of, a reminder of our intrinsic need to connect with living beings, to give and receive affection, and to find joy in the presence of creatures different from ourselves. Describing the Human-Animal Bond in words is difficult, and that is why visual storytelling in Pet Care Marketing is so important. On the latest episode of Petworking, I was fortunate enough to host Mindy Dutka, Founder & Chief Storyteller at DogsIMeet.com. Mindy specializes in pet photography, especially dogs, and she estimates that she photographs thousands of dogs each year. Mindy and I talked about her work, and the emotional resonance that visuals can create. This can be leveraged by both animal advocacy organizations, e.g., shelters, pet brands, and other non-pet-related brands that recognize the power of the Human-Animal Bond, and incorporate it in their advertising. Mindy estimates that 50-60% of her work is brand-focused, 20-25% pro bono work for shelters, and 15-20% private photo shoots. However, Mindy likes to say that bridges the gap between professional dog photography and advocacy, and she is very adept at finding ways to incorporate adoption awareness in her work for brands. Mindy discussed how she leverages her photography as a medium to bring awareness to shelter dogs, and cited a specific example of a brand shoot she had done for a collaboration between Shameless Pets and Virgin Hotels. Virgin has pet-friendly rooms, and had partnered with Shameless Pets to provide a package of treats for all guests that checked in with a dog. However, instead of using of dog models for the shoot, Mindy suggested finding long-term shelter dogs and using them as the models. This initiative not only provided the dogs with much-needed exposure, but also played a role in their eventual adoption, showcasing the power of photography in advocacy. Because of visual storytelling's relevance to all aspects of the Pet Care ecosystem, Mindy and I had quite the far reaching conversation. Tune in to the full episode to hear us discuss: The mental and physical health benefits that both pets and pet parents derive from the Human-Animal Bond Use of the Human-Animal Bond in marketing by brands such as Subaru and Hyundai, and how non-pet-related brands leverage the human-animal bond to drive engagement and sales Senior dog adoptions, Mindy's work with shelters, and how pet brands are working with shelters to acquire new customers, while simultaneously supporting adoption Black Dog Syndrome - did you know that it's harder for black dogs to get adopted from shelters because they don't photograph well? Mindy's work with private clients, and her most memorable private photoshoot Bringing KONG Company cat toys to a shelter in Playa del Carmen, Mexico Enjoy the episode, and please share your thoughts in the comments!

In today's episode, Stacy, Robin, and Crystal open up about the realities of managing the day-to-day lives of dogs bred for work. They explain that drive expresses itself in dogs in a lot of ways owners don't expect. But no matter how messy or even violent the expression, we must avoid judging our furry friends by the standards of human morality. Our hosts share how they've been able to maintain a happy household where their dogs feel safe, and how they've navigated days in which almost everything seems to be going wrong. A lot of the work, they found, comes down to taking pressure off of yourself and refusing to slap a label on your dog (ex. “She's an angry dog/He's a nervous dog, etc.”).They remind us that the human-dog dynamic is ever-changing by the day, and that we must be aware and adaptable as owners in order to stay in control. Finally, we have to be willing to commit to a regular schedule of care, play, and training, because “it's not all happiness all the time. It's a daily crate and rotate. To them, clarity is kindness, and having intent in every training session builds a sense of expectation in your dog that gets them to the goal more efficiently.Ultimately, the two steps to intentional detection dog handling are to observe and adjust. “If you can observe and adjust before you do the thing,” say our hosts, “the thing will become more consistent.” Cycling through these steps helps trainers decide how, where, and when to use reinforcement, and how to correctly use cross-training to create a well-rounded dog.Key Topics:Being intentional with your handling (01:52)Clarity as kindness (07:11)Finding the rhythm of your training (15:33)Observation first (22:44)The difference between a lifeline and a cadaver dog (30:47)How your posture influences shaping training (39:24)It's not the excitement but the energy (44:04)Creating a well-rounded dog (48:17)Resources:K9 Detection Collaborative Jan 2023 RoundtableK9 Detection Collaborative Episode 42: Words Matter in Dog TrainingK9 Detection Collaborative Episode 4: Let's Talk FluencyK9 Detection Collaborative Episode 40: What Else We Do with Our DogsKees SeekHow Canines Hearts are in Sync with Ours‘Askers' vs. ‘Guessers'Distraction camp 2023sniffspot.comWe want to hear from you:Check out the K9 Detection Collaborative FB page and comment on the episode post!K9Sensus Foundation can be found on Facebook and Instagram. A critical factor in ensuring that your dog is well-trained, odor hygiene includes knowing where and how to store your odor and how to keep your training aids as pristine as possible. Our hosts give their best advice on avoiding cross-contamination between odors in your containers, as well as between odors external to your training aids. They also talk about the importance of wearing gloves as a bomb dog or cadaver dog handler, and how often to change your gloves. According to our hosts, for even the most casual of trainers, such as those who do not participate in competitions, impeccable odor hygiene is still a foundational aspect of this work. To your dog, odor hygiene promotes clarity, which avoids confusion and, by extension, anxiety.“If you are not willing to do some of the fundamental things to participate in your sport or your calling, including odor hygiene, then maybe this line of work is not for you.”Key Topics:Why is odor hygiene important? Jo-Rosie also discusses how to reconcile your ethical paradigm with your training methodology as well as her thoughts on punishment. Our hosts give their thoughts on force-free training and why competence does not necessarily mean not using force. They encourage handlers to get comfortable with simply giving their dog a job, because when they have a job, the dog makes better choices.
