Welcome to Episode 10 of the Game is the Game. I've been fortunate in life to meet an array of inspirational individuals across varied professions. The Game is the Game is an opportunity for them to tell their stories and hopefully inspire others to find their calling. On this episode I sit down with Jimmy Davis. Jimmy Davis is a multi-faceted talent. Emcee, university lecturer, podcast host, presenter, public speaker, DJ and everything else in between. We first met circa 2013 when I saw Jimmy support Luke Concannon (formerly Nizlopi) at a gig in London. His music immediately resonated with me because he was an emcee willing to spit about more than the usual mundane subjects associated with the genre. Socially conscious and hard hitting lyricism matched with must see stage presence led to Jimmy and I forming a connection which has existed for many years. Yet for all of his music success - Jimmy has a deeper story that speaks to personal hurdles he had to overcome, that being drug addiction and how he came out the other side. Jimmy didnt hesitate to agree when I asked him if he was willing to chop this all up on the game is the game. I hope you enjoy the episode. You can follow my Jimmy on Instagram here Alternatively you can find him on LinkedIn here You can now follow The Game is the Game on Instagram here and on Twitter here. The Game is the Game is an independent venture founded by Machel St Patrick Hewitt. If you'd like to buy me a coffee as an appreciation for this podcast - you can do so here.

This is a really special episode. John Parker (JP) is a man of wondrous musical talent, a mean double bass player in Parker and Ward, a session musician for a number of top artists and previously one half of Nizlopi.Alongside being a beast of a musician JP decided to first support, then care for his mother Catherine following her diagnosis with vascular dementia.Catherine sadly passed away in February and amongst promising to look after her garden, JP also promised to run the London Virtual Marathon. JP decided to raise money for Myton Hospices who were instrumental in helping Catherine live comfortably and with dignity in the later stages of her life.Chris thought it was high time he got JP on for a chat, about both his musical journey, and the journey he has been on with his lively mum over the last 7 years...and it wouldn't be HCL if we didn't sneak in a top 5 too. And its the sort of top 5 Stu gets to really geek out on!JP was a wonderful guest who I'm sure we'd love to have back, and if you want to donate to his charity (the likes of Ed Sheeran have already done so) then please do using the link below!https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/john-parker39?experiments=b2c_059_donate_to_yourself_v3&isMobile=true&successType=StaticDonateButtonClick&fbclid=IwAR2f7ewE-pS7KejHpS18EOzTweZOeXaFSAC-D1Ir3eqQuKD-honSLdRO23g See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Rory McLeod in conversation with David Eastaugh Rory McLeod (born 1957) is a British folk singer-songwriter from London. He grew up in Camberwell before moving to Northolt and later West Kilburn. His career has included being a fire eater and circus clown[3] and his performances include storytelling in the tradition of the traveling minstrel or troubadour, and playing a wide range of instrumentsincluding guitar, harmonica, trombone and his personally-made stomp box. WoMAD have said: "With Rory McLeod, you get the music of the world in one suitcase.[...] You can hear flamenco, calypso, blues and Celtic influences in his music, all wrapped together in an inimitable style". He has recorded and toured with (then) fellow Cooking Vinyl artist Michelle Shocked. He also performed on Puddle Dive, the 1993 album by fellow singer-songwriter, Ani DiFranco. In 1996, McLeod's song Invoking the Spirits, which was inspired by time he spent in Zimbabwe, was a BBC Radio 4 "pick of the week". McLeod played the theme tune for the TV animation series, Creature Comforts.Martin Newell has described McLeod as "a feral folk musician of enormous talent", and writing in The Guardian Robin Denselow called him a "rousing harmonica player and guitarist". In 2002, McLeod was the winner of the Best Live Act title at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. McLeod played harmonica on Nizlopi's 2008 album, Make It Happen.

Luke Concannon is a fiercely passionate English singer-songwriter who, with his own record label, has sold millions of records across the world while keeping his feet firmly on the ground. Like so many English artists including Ed Sheeran, Oasis, Morrissey, Lennon and McCartney, Luke grew up in an English household rooted in Irish heritage and the traditions of family gatherings and sing-songs. His band Nizlopi achieved mass fame with their no.1 hit the JCB song which is written as a beautiful ode from a young Luke to his father. Nizlopi had a famously D.I.Y approach and their raw energy inspired a young Ed Sheeran to become one of their biggest fans. Ed cites them as a major influence on him and once spent 2 weeks on the road with the band learning the ropes. He has also recently recorded a song with Luke. After Nizlopi ended, Luke went through a period of reflection and discovery including what he calls a hitch-hiking vision quest to Palestine where he worked a peace worker. Now a solo artist living in Boston, he continues to invest in his music and is a powerful voice for love and justice with his words, his approach to life and his music. Luke and I have some mutual friends and it destined that we would end up meeting. What was originally intended to be an interview in Boston ended up in a random series of events that led us to the home of French artist Veronique Castellanos in Gort in Co. Galway, Ireland.

Pop Up Folk presenter Kitty Macfarlane spoke on the phone to John Parker from Leamington Spa-based band Nizlopi, ahead of their homecoming gig at The Assembly on Wednesday 19th November 2014.
Mr. Gourley proudly made his debut on Swindon radio station Brunel FM this week! He interviewed Nizlopi and Jimmy Davis for their show at The 12 Bar. The audio is hear. Apologies for the poor quality of the recording, I had to dust off my old FM radio as they don't broadcast in DAB! (sorry, I promise that will be the last geeky comment I ever make for Uber Loud Records!)
Episode 10 is here! Highlights from the 12 Bar gig, 12th Oct 07. The sections interview The Dirty Feel And a scoop from Mr Gourley - an interview with Nizlopi after their gig in Swindon.
