In this episode, I explore the rise, the fall, and the impact of one of the first content collectives— the Brit Crew. One of the earliest YouTuber friend groups, Zoella, Alfie, Joe, Jim, Tanya, Louise, Marcus, Niomi, and Caspar set the stage for the future of online content creation. Their frequent collaborations and ventures into publishing and lifestyle brands marked some of the first successful crossovers into mainstream fame. The collective also shifted the direction of vlogging, moving away from skits and focusing more on their daily lives and friendships. This change not only popularised more authentic, relatable content but also laid the groundwork for content houses and other creator collectives that followed. Thank you to the Centennial World editorial team, Annabel Bendavid and Danni Fenech, for putting this episode together while I was on leave! Timestamps: 5:18 Who was the Brit Crew? Your support helps us run this show, without ads, and to retain editorial independence. -------- This week, we watch the BBC Three webseires "Pls Like", starring Liam Williams, Tom Stourton and Emma Sidi. The show, starting in 2016, was a satirical exploration the world of Youtubers as a time when the platform started getting taken more seriously by advertisers, brands and wider popular culture. We discuss what the show was trying to explore, what observations it got right, and of course, the challenges of trying to make a show about the internet, for television. We also discuss Youtube culture in the 2010s, reminisce about the big Zoella ads that at one point covered every London tube station, and discuss what happened to some of the big Youtube stars who struggled to make it on other platforms.
Joe Sugg found fame after his sister, Zoe Sugg, known as Zoella, convinced him to start uploading videos to YouTube. He quickly built a community by posting content such as Q&A's, pranks and challenges and became a core member of the massive 'Brit Crew' moment in 2014. In this episode, Joe reflects on why collaborating with YouTubers was so important to his success and urges emerging creators today to do the same. He also delves into how Strictly changed his life, what his parents really make of his career and his experiences when entering the world of business. 00:00 - 01:50 Being a YouTube OG and what he's learnt from his time creating 01:50 - 03:26 Mental health and managing it 03:26 - 07:36 Advice to creators 07:36 - 11:26 What it was like to hit 1m subs and the craziest YouTube times 11:26 - 13:15 How the fame affected him as a person 13:15 - 14:54 What they look for when signing talent 14:54 - 16:51 What have been the challenges and lessons whilst setting up his businesses 16:51 - 19:28 Setting up Final Straw Production and the vision 19:28 - 21:05 What his family makes of his career 21:05 -22:20 What is one piece of advice for a creator 22:20 - A creator Joe is loving at the moment Joe's favourite creator at the moment: FISH13: https://www.youtube.com/c/FISH13
Bella Howarth, 22, didn't exactly fall into social media fame. While TikTok was never a specific ambition, from age 12 Howarth knew she wanted to make videos.“I was trying to be like a vlogger, like Zoella, I think my handle [on YouTube] was Dorkabella.”While her YouTube career wasn't meant to be, and she has now scraped all evidence from the internet, she's now found success on the video-sharing app TikTok. Speaking to the Herald's In the Loop podcast, Howarth details what it's like sharing so much of her personal life, dealing with trolls and being recognised in public.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Welcoming Mac Dingle to the podcast! Mac is a content creator, content curator, and vlogger. Most recently she's been sharing her infertility journey so she can connect with and help others going through the same struggles. In this episode, we talk about... how her environment has a big impact on her content's visual aesthetic and how it's always evolving how burnout in the corporate world and poor mental health lead her to explore other career paths how the discovery of Twitch and Zoella's channel on YouTube inspired her to start her own lifestyle vlogging journey what it was like opening up to strangers on the internet for the first time how amazing it has been to connect with other like minded people on the internet and, on the flipside, how tough it can be to deal with negativity how she responds to trolls and "kills them with kindness" instead of starting fights with and wasting energy how important it is for content creators to be paid for the work and content that they make how social media is always changing and how "hopping on trends" can be stressful but often is worth the experiment (her latest experiment being YouTube shorts) how going "viral" should never be the goal because it rarely connects you with ideal clients and so much more! We also reminisce about the good ol Facebook days (remember poking??), and our mutual love for the state of Maine. Mac is a breath of fresh air in this negative, chaotic world! I highly recommend connecting with her on her various channels: just search "Mac Dingle" on Instagram, Twitch, YouTube, and TikTok (she's the only one!)

EPISODE 109./Hello pod fam! Happy new week and another new podcast episode. Lots of beauty news to cover from the last week, but firstly, we’ve gotta talk about Lisa’s Youfoodz hunger strike cause it’s the cause of her crazies in this episode. Kicking off news with another beauty Youtuber pregnancy announcement. Congratulations to Zoella on the announcement of her tiny baby prodigy and a big HA HA to everyone who said that her and Alfie no longer loved each other. Next up, Jaclyn Hill is doing the unthinkable, relaunching a lipstick line for Jaclyn cosmetics, KVD Vegan Beauty has rebranded AGAIN and Chloe Morello … or Face Halo have released some seriously questionable and outrageously expensive merch. This weeks product trial is nothing short of a miracle. A legitimate Glossier dupe sourced directly from the drugstore. We trialled the Rimmel Wonder Cloud Liquid Eyeshadow (and primer!). Not only is it a fantastic dupe for Glossier Skywash, it’s also a fairly decent eyeshadow primer too. What a win-win! Great work Rimmel. Finally, you spoke and we listened, the secret skincare sound is no more. You hated the segment and now it’s gone forever, but if you’re wondering what it was… Congratulations if you guessed Sunday Riley Good Genes. This week Ciara's Mum made an episode request, so we sat down and chatted about the traits we've inherited from our Mums, just in time for Mother's Day in the UK. This week, we break WHY Jeff Bezos has stepped down from running Amazon , We also get into this craziness of AQA saying GCSE students are too delicate to hear Zoella talking about sex issues Is Rihanna talking about the Indian farmers bad or should the Indian Government just talk about the situation, DJ Tiiny got canned from Capital Xtra after J Beatz put him on blast for trying to charge to play his single! AND Starz and Loma Vista Recordings try and pretend they thought Marilyn Manson was a boy scout, and drop him after Evan Rachel Wood says what everyone already knew #EFTV spitting fire as always!!! PLUS, Netflix saved it, a third season kicked in the New Year, so, I figured I'd martial up the patience and give season one of 'Cobra Kai' a kick. AND, our Audible of the week, is something a lil different, cause it's all bout shining the light on a film that it's claiming to be a hidden gem! Richard Ayoade fills us in on why 'View From the Top' should be re-examined, in the hilarious 'Ayoade On Top'. This week: - Jeff Bezos steps down as CEO from Amazon and we know why!?! - Is anyone surprised Putin put Alexei Navalny in jail?? - Are celebrities virtue signalling around India's farmer protests??? - Zoella axed by AQA for talking about sex! - Starz and label drop Marilyn Manson after Evan Rachel Wood talks abuse! - Crocked DJ caught in play for pay scam! - Chin check REVIEWS & RECOMMENDATIONS - TV: Cobra Kai - Season One - thoughts AUDIBLE - Ayoade On Top by Richard Ayoade *(Music) 'Overnight Celebrity' by Twista - 2004
After the Zoella and female masturbation row, we discuss what is the right age for women to start talking about female pleasure? Plus we chat about dealing with grief during coronavirus and how we’re craving the need for gossip.
Who would you invite to your dream dinner party? We answered this question inspired by The Dinner List, a novel written by Rebecca Serle. It inspired conversations like: are Rory Gilmore's mistakes justified? Did Brooke Davis have the best character arc on One Tree Hill? In our round up we covered the Zoella sex toy scandal, It's a Sin, and a list of recent reads. To add some spice to our agony aunt column, we answered a question from "Dear Dolly", Dolly Alderton's agony aunt column for the Sunday Times. Hello lovelies,We begin today’s chat catching up on what we both have been up to – Jas has moved back to Melbourne and Maggie has been on a fashion film set. 17-year-old internet star Jojo Siwa has proudly come out as queer. We reference this Buzzfeed article on how Gen Zs are changing the conversation around coming out which led to a tear-filled and vulnerable talk about our own journeys of coming out without labels. Then we’re onto Zoella, the British Youtuber who was dropped from the GCSE Media Studies exam after reviewing sex toys on her website.Jasmine recommends the 2019 film Just Mercy, available to watch on Netflix. Based on a true story, it follows Walter McMillan who, with the help of a recent law graduate, Bryan Stevenson, overturns his murder conviction. Maggie recommends “Yes, Your Honest Mix-Up is Racially Biased” by Reena Gupta for Kill Your Darlings which unpacks why some names, places and people are afforded a level of care that others are not.Our jingle, editing and production is by India Raine. You can email us at cultureclubmail@gmail.com, find us on Instagram at @cultureclubpod, or on our personal accounts at @jasmineeskye and @yemagz.Until next week,Mags and Jas xx
This episode is a little piece of my heart. I couldn't help but feel complete rage when I saw the front page headlines that Zoe Sugg and her brand Zoella is being 'cancelled' from a school curriculum (she didn't even know she was in) for having an article on her website recommending women's sex toys. Women have been made to feel shame about owning their sensuality for years and it needs to stop. We are not supposed to be so disconnected from a huge part of who we are, from an innate part of our soul and femininity. The pain it causes in so many women as they grow up confused, not feeling connected to that part of themselves, not understanding where they are at with their own boundaries and who they want to be, is too much. It's unnecessary and the story needs to change. We need to empower all the women in the world now, and all the women to come after us - we owe it to ourselves and them! This episode is not a victim mode rant, it's an open and honest discussion about an ancient, archaic narrative in our society that needs to be stopped. I discuss how we can be the change we need and why I am optimistic for the progress of this in the future.@megan_rose_lane@thisisamyrushworth@iammelwells@emmatamsinhill@jess_megan_Shop our brand new set of meditations!Get 10% off your first month of therapy with Better Help betterhelp.com/findingyourfeetBuy us a coffee buymeacoffee.com/findingyourfeetShop positive affirmationsSubscribe to our Youtube ChannelSign up to receive a positive Monday morning email from us once a weekJoin our community on instagram: @findingyourfeetpodcast
