Emerging from a cloud of goose feathers, TTWS returns! Filmmaker Devyn Waitt joins the study group today to discuss INSTINCT, moments in the Coens films that defy logic but somehow make sense on an intuitive, almost physical level. We touch on whether they could be a connection between survival skills and artistic expression, and speculate on the Coens' writing process, which seems to be where their most free-wheeling moves find their form. We also discuss a scene from Devyn's feature Not Waving But Drowning which involved getting a horse on a subway train. Coens Covered: A Serious Man, The Man Who Wasn't There, Miller's Crossing (the bear version), Barton Fink Plus: Beethoven's 2nd (1993) - Beethoven destroys patio scene Want to join the study group? In 1957 Stevie Smith published a poetry collection called Not Waving But Drowning – and its title poem gave us a phrase which has entered the language. Its success has overshadowed her wider work as the author of more than half a dozen collections of poetry and three novels, mostly written while she worked as a secretary. Her poems, printed with her pen and ink sketches, can seem simple and comical, but often beneath the surface lurk themes of melancholy, loneliness, love and death. With Jeremy Noel-Tod Associate Professor in the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia Noreen Masud Lecturer in Twentieth Century Literature at the University of Bristol and Will May Professor of Modern and Contemporary Literature at the University of Southampton The photograph above shows Stevie Smith recording her story Sunday at Home, a finalist in the BBC Third Programme Short Story competition in 1949.

Loyle Carner might not be a household name yet. But in the music world this week he’s the one everyone's talking about; a young British hip hop artist rapping about things the macho world of hip hop usually ignores - like family. His 2017 debut album was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Now the follow up - ‘Not Waving But Drowning’ - is poised in the charts to bring him mainstream success. Chapter 139: "From A Young Age" ...as read by Justin Mank Justin's parents took him to see artists like Eric Clapton and U2 starting at the age of 10. As a teenager he started booking touring acts to come play St Louis. Not Waving But Drowning spent so much time on the road that they didn't get to write the record that would've been released by Solid State. None the less, the band has new material in the works, as well as a side project, and a solo effort from Justin!
