This time I am hanging out with Mike Leon, current bassist for CKY, and Igorrr. (Former member of Soulfly, Havok and The Absence.) We dig into how a kid who was obsessed with CKY movies and weird heavy bands ended up actually joining his favorite band, and how that path wound through DIY world tours, insane lineups and a whole lot of van miles. Mike walks through his whole journey: discovering heavy music in the pre-internet days, cutting his teeth in The Absence, jumping into Havok, then getting the call from Soulfly, and finally landing in CKY literally days after leaving Soulfly. We get into the “law of attraction” side of all this, but with the real-world piece too, the boring but crucial part, consistency and doing the work for years when no one is watching. Of course we nerd out on bass gear and tone. Mike talks about his first Fender PJ that felt like opening a treasure chest, his love affair with ESP basses, how his ESP MLB4 signature came to be, why longer scale lengths and heavier strings matter for low tunings, and how the humble Boss ODB-3 and a chorus pedal get you straight into Peter Steele territory. We also get into NAMM show chaos, what good artist relations actually looks like, and how his day job at Enki has him helping other artists solve real on-the-road problems. We round it out with kids discovering heavy music, whether a new “Warped Tour era” is coming, and a spicy pizza take involving pineapple. If you are into CKY, Soulfly, metal bass tone, ESP gear, NAMM stories or just want to hear how sticking with it can literally change your life, this one is for you. This episode dives deep into the early 2000s Farmington and St. Louis music scenes, the friendships that shaped them, and the full-circle moments that bring these musicians back together decades later. We talk through the evolution of their bands, the recording of new material, and what it's like revisiting the sound and energy they built in their youth. Justin and Calvin share stories about playing with iconic bands, memories of Bob's legendary mixed-genre shows, and the magic of a small-town scene that punched far above its weight. From Rosner's to the Park Hills Bowling Alley, from pre-internet tour networking to the tight-knit relationships that formed on the road, this episode captures an era that refuses to fade.We explore Last Flight Home's recent recording sessions, and their return to the stage. Justin reflects on the early days of struggling to book shows and eventually becoming one of the scene's most effective promoters, proving how networking and hustle turned into lifelong relationships and opportunities. The conversation moves through memories of Papa Roach, Soulfly, and the chaotic but beautiful early-2000s scene that saw hardcore, emo, indie, punk, and metal bands all sharing the same stage. Few bands in history have left such a lasting impression in music as Santa Barbara funk metal outfit Snot.Forming in 1995, Snot released just one album before having their career cut short by the tragic death of frontman Lynn Strait. Despite their short time as a band, such was the impression left by Lynn and Snot that after his death, a tribute album called Strait Up was recorded in his honour, featuring everyone from Slipknot to System Of A Down to Sevendust paying tribute to the man and his music.Snot's fusion of genres - before it was common to do so - stood them out from other bands of the era, with their blending of hardcore, punk, nu metal and funk combining for the masterpiece that was their debut album Get Some. The band have flirted with the idea of reigniting the flame with a new frontman several times since Lynn's passing, but until recently, and buoyed by the resurgence of nu metal, have failed to find that elusive spark that ignited three decades ago to create pure musical magic.Next January, for the first time in over a decade, Snot return to Australia for a run of shows with Soulfly and Nailbomb - including Froth & Fury Festival - with vocalist Andy Knapp (Stronger Than Machines) to introduce a new generation to the power of music. HEAVY spoke with bass player John Fahnestock to find out what to expect. We start by running over the three touring bands - Soulfly, Nailbomb and Snot - and reiterate the quality of music in one package."Soulfly and Nailbomb, right," John laughed. "They are good friends of ours. We have known each other for, God, going on 25 years or more. Mikey (Doling, founding member and guitarist) also played in Soulfly after Snot, after Lynn had passed. So, we're out on the road with family again. We played with Soulfly in Mexico City back in May and rekindled our friendship, and here we are coming to Australia now."We ask John about their new vocalist, Andy Knapp, and what they were looking for in a frontman after trialling two previous vocalists in Tommy Vext and Carl Bensley."I think the whole thing is a lot different now," he measured. "We are pretty much saying Snot is back at this point. We finally found in Andy what we basically were dreaming of having, and I'm not saying anything negative on the past singers that we had. Before, when we put Snot back together, it wasn't like 'we're reforming, we're back', anything like that. We were just more doing it for fun, for the love of music, the love of Jamie and Mikey and myself playing together. And we were like, let's go out and play the songs, you know? But it wasn't seriously saying we're back and coming back here to stay, like we are now. It's a blessing to have found Andy and what he's doing, and obviously, the response from the fans has been nothing but positive."In the full interview, John spoke more about the upcoming Australian shows, what has changed with the band in the decade since they were last here and what we can expect. He spoke more about welcoming Andy Knapp as frontman and what sorts of things Snot were looking for in their new vocalist. He told us about the first show with Knapp and how old time fans reacted, how Snot's music relates with modern audiences, and how their sound shaped a generation of bands. We talked about the early days of Snot and the musical climate that gave birth to the band, their initial sound and how they found the balance between genres, including how to know when or if they had gone too far in one direction or not far enough in another. We spoke about the impact of Snot's debut album, Get Some, and the band's initial feelings on the album, including Lynn Strait's early vision for Snot and his musical passion. John delved deeper into the tribute album Strait Up and the contributions of the many bands, new music the band have written and if that will translate into a full album and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Switzerland isn't known for its nu metal/metalcore bands, with thrash bands such as Coroner or extreme acts Celtic Frost more prominent. But all that changed in 2018 when Chaoseum, a newcomer to the scene, announced their arrival with their debut album First Step To Hell. The album took the musical landscape by surprise, in the process helping Chaoseum secure a US tour supporting Soulfly, and things just snowballed from there.Following a steady, yet upward trajectory, Chaoseum refined their sound on albums such as Second Life (2020) - which also welcomed new vocalist CK Smile - and The Third Eye (2022), constructing their music in such a way to incorporate more cinematic elements and soundscapes that have now become part of the band's signature sound. That evolution continued on their most recent album, Life 4 Sale, which was released this year on September 19. HEAVY recently sat down with CK Smile to find out more."This album has a completely different story," he measured, deliberating over speaking English, "more than the previous album, because I had to compose it completely alone. On the previous album, we were two composers, the ex-guitar player and I. When he quit the band, we had to find new members, and they had to learn every song from the previous album. It was huge work because we had to do some tours and many, many gigs so they didn't have time to form the composition, so I decided to do it alone. It's different, because I grew up in a nu metal era from 90s and early 2000s, and you can hear on this album it's a little bit simpler, but that's what I like. Plus, the lyrics are different too, because in the previous album, I was mixing part of a true story, mixing with something from my imagination for something more epic. This one is more real. More personal, and so that meant that it was hard for me to write that because I'm talking a lot about my past, and I have many episodes from my past that were very complicated to live. For some things, it's still a little bit complicated, but I deal with it."In the full interview, CK talks more about the writing and creative process for Life 4 Sale and how it impacted the finished result. He spoke about the darker nature on the previous album, The Third Eye and if that flowed onto this record, plus opening up more in his lyrics and how doing so was a difficult process. He spoke about the emotions and atmosphere present in Chaoseum's music and how difficult those features are to integrate into music, how Chaoseum have expanded their sound since he joined the band, how much growth the band have left in them musically and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Extreme metal trailblazers SOULFLY deliver their 13th album "CHAMA" on October 24th. Max Cavalera returns to talk the new record, making music with his sons, Christmas dinner at Ozzy's house, defense of an aging Axl Rose, and more! More info: https://soulfly.bfan.link/chama https://soulfly.bfan.link/storm-the-gates https://www.instagram.com/thesoulflytribe Our website: www.afdpod.com
Soulfly have long been a force unto themselves, spearheading the movement of groove metal over twelve previous albums, integrating tribal elements into metal with a passion and genuineness that is as undeniable as it is brutal.Proudly wearing his Brazilian heritage as a badge of honour, frontman Max Cavalera has overseen Soulfly since its inception, consistently raising the sonic bar with every new body of work. This trend looks set to continue with the impending release of Chama on October 24.The album is already being touted by those who have heard it as a return to the roots of Soulfly; a return to the gritty rawness that accentuated their early albums such as 1998's self-titled effort as well as Primitive, 3 and Prophecy. Capturing the essence of tribal lore in every breath of music, Soulfly are at their best when singing about their core ideologies, with Cavalera leading the charge with honest, meaningful appraisals of lost lives, land, and heritage.Max himself has already said, "I'm excited to present it to long-time Soulfly fans, it's a revival of our original sound", a statement which may seem casual enough but is also one which has sent scores of fans around the world in musical raptures of anticipation.HEAVY recently caught up with Max to go into greater detail. We start by asking if, after 13 albums with Soulfly and countless more with other projects, he still gets the same feeling of anticipation that accompanies an album release."Oh yeah," he replied instantly. "No matter how many albums you make, it's always the same; there's nervousness and anxiety. I probably have a bunch of ulcers from making records, but it's a cool excitement. It's fun. You're proud of the thing, you want to hear what people think of it because that's what fuels it. Everything that we do is for the fans to enjoy what we do, you know. But I think right now, Soulfly is being more inspired than ever before. I think this is a really good moment in Soulfly; a really inspirational moment to make a record like Chama. And the record is full of very strong songs and full of tribal grooves, kind of back to the tribal beginnings of Soulfly with a lot of real cool noise stuff in it, which makes it more modern. I've been joking that this album feels like tribal technology. You have the tribal beats, but with technology on top of it. If you love Soulfly, this album is definitely for you. This is an album made for Soulfly fans. If you don't like Soulfly, don't even waste your time."In the full interview, Max further shared his excitement and anxiety about Chama, emphasizing its strong songs and a return to tribal influences, blending traditional beats with modern technology. He noted that the album is tailored for dedicated fans, with themes reflecting Brazilian culture, including songs in Portuguese and narratives inspired by personal and historical experiences. Notable tracks like Always Was Always Will Be and Indigenous Inquisition were highlighted for their experimental sounds and thought-provoking content, addressing issues such as the genocide of indigenous tribes.Max also discussed the collaborative nature of the album's creation, involving his son Zyon as a producer, which brought a fresh perspective to the music. He expressed pride in the familial contributions to the project and the emotional challenges of writing authentically. The conversation included details about the upcoming Australian tour featuring Soulfly, NailBomb, and Snot, with Max expressing enthusiasm for the setlist and the opportunity to connect with fans. Overall, the album represents a significant moment for Max and Soulfly, capturing the essence of their musical journey while looking forward to future endeavours.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersPolaris have been conquering the world one country at a time since the release of their third album, Fatalist, in 2023. Having already firmly established their place as a fixture in the Australian heavy landscape via their first two albums - 2020's ARIA Award-nominated The Death Of Me and 2017's The Mortal Coil, which debuted in the Australian Top 10 - Polaris have earnt themselves a laundry list of accolades along with sold-out headline tours of Australia and previous tours across the globe, including most recently performing at Good Things Festival in 2022 alongside headliners Bring Me The Horizon. 2023 saw POLARIS head overseas for multiple European summer festival appearances, and the band's global love affair has been on an upward trajectory ever since.Last month, Polaris were finally given their deserved level of respect in their home country when they were named to headline Froth & Fury 2026, a rapidly growing Australian festival that this year has expanded to feature Perth for the first time as well as its adopted home in Adelaide. Polaris' name sits proudly on the event poster atop some legends of the music world, with Soulfly, Nailbomb, Comeback Kid and Lagwagon leading the international charge, and Frenzal Rhomb, Ocean Sleeper, Private Function, Terminal Sleep and Zuko joining Polaris for home country honours. HEAVY recently caught up with bassist/vocalist Jake Steinhauser to firstly congratulate the band on their headlining status."Thank you so much," he replied sincerely. "We're absolutely stoked to be headlining the fest. Just to be at the stage to be doing anything like that at this point is really awesome for us. So, yeah, very, excited."We mention the high number of Australian bands on the bill and ask Jake how important festivals that reward homegrown talent are for the Australian music industry and what emerging bands can take out of the experience."I guess being here in Australia, we're so separated from the world and there's kind of almost like this illustriousness to some of the bands that do come over here and play shows," he measured. "Getting to see some of our bands rub shoulders with them, regardless of what level they are themselves, helps to put the image of that band in a similar place in your mind, especially as a young audience goer. I remember when we were young, the pinnacle of what we could - just to go back to Soundwave again - was always… we just wanted to desperately play that festival. And, sadly, it's not with us anymore. But every time we get to do something here at home, I am always reminding myself of what it looked like to see those local bands, to see the homegrown heroes and stuff like that."In the full interview, Jake expressed gratitude for the opportunity and highlighted Froth & Fury's diverse lineup, which is beneficial for emerging artists. He detailed the extensive planning and rehearsal involved in their live performances, the positive reception of their latest album, and shared experiences from recent tours. He also provided an update on Polaris' new album, indicating progress in the writing process and plans for a focused retreat in New South Wales, while expressing excitement about the new material and upcoming shows in Japan and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Welcome to another edition of the MHOD Jukebox, where the riffs are heavy and the commentary is heavier. On this episode, Mark Radulich, Jesse Starcher, Robert Cooper, and Mik Wanamaker dive deep into the fuzzy, funk-laced world of Crobot! We kick things off with a blast of industrial groove from White Zombie, then take a quick stroll through Crobot's history—where they came from, what they sound like, and how they carved out their niche in modern rock. From there, it's on to their breakout hit “Low Life”, a full review of their latest album Obsidian, and a look at how it stacks up against past efforts like Welcome to Fat City.We also take a moment to reflect on key events from May 18th in metal history, including the passing of Chris Cornell and the legacy of Blind Guardian, Soulfly, and HammerFall. And because this is MHOD, you know it wouldn't be complete without a bit of black metal nonsense from Immortal, a detour into OnlyFans coaching, and a punchy closer from Five Finger Death Punch.Plug in and turn it up—this one's got riffs, laughs, and just enough chaos to keep it interesting.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.White Zombie - More Human Than Humanhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0E0ynyIUsgCrobot - "Low Life" Official Music Video (MOTHERBRAIN)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPi_SaFsMf8Crobot - Nothing (Official Music Video)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CKT3LXQKec&list=PLVPMBFr-dNGWxLvdFACIxmCLaMKnq0Q0B&index=15Immortal - Call Of The Wintermoonhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VBdAY8eA9wFive Finger Death Punch - Jekyll And Hydehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCBPmxiVMKkMik Wanamakers Onlyfans: https://onlyfans.com/asirencreatesMark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Since his viral hit "Heart on Ice" in 2019, Rod Wave has seen consistent chart success with albums like "Ghetto Gospel," "Pray 4 Love," "SoulFly," "Beautiful Mind," and "Nostalgia." His latest single, "Westside Connection," released on January 9, 2025, continues his tradition of introspective lyrics, focusing on themes of betrayal, loyalty, personal growth, and reflection. Early reception has been positive, with fans lauding the song's emotional resonance and storytelling.
