'It's ok to be uncomfortable, and it's a sign of strength if you're feeling really weird about it - cause that's a normal, human, good thing.' At this special salon event held in partnership with State Library Victoria, we took a leaf out of Otis Redding's book and tried a little tenderness. Sarah Krasnostein's March Quarterly Essay, Not Waving, Drowning: Mental Illness and Vulnerability in Australia examines a society that often punishes vulnerability, but that does have the resources to mend this broken system. Rick Morton's memoir My Year of Living Vulnerably charts his journey towards embracing the healing and transformative power of love. Together, these remarkable writers discussed the push and pull that take place across the broad spectrum of social policy, care and human vulnerability, with host Mahmood Fazal. This podcast was recorded at State Library Victoria on 27 May 2022. Novelist Oana Aristide discusses her debut novel Under the Blue, about a reclusive artist forced to abandon his home and follow two young sisters across a post-pandemic Europe in search of a safe place. It has been described as eco-fiction and it explores themes of environmental destruction, the melting of the polar ice, eco-terrorism, all within a suspenseful story of three survivors on a terrifying road trip. The British poet Stevie Smith, best known for her work “Not Waving, But Drowning” died 50 years ago today. We speak with her biographer Frances Spalding, the editor of her collected poems and drawings Will May and we’re joined by the actor Juliet Stevenson to look at Smith’s life and works and consider her legacy. Kings of Leon have made their new album available as a form of cryptocurrency, and last week Grimes sold a digital collection of artworks in a similar way for almost $6m. Aleks Krotoski explains the growing craze for ‘non-fungible tokens’ or NFTs. Presenter: John Wilson Producer: Oliver Jones Main image: Oana Aristide Image credit: Nikos Karanikolas
Paranoia, the collateral damage on his family and the investigations he makes into drugs used to treat such a breakdown: Horatio Clare talks to Laurence Scott about his Journey through Madness, Mania and Healing. Plus the poetry of Stevie Smith (20 September 1902 – 7 March 1971). Author of the much quoted lines Not Waving but Drowning; Stevie Smith suffered from depression and acute shyness. New Generation Thinker Noreen Masud looks at her writing. Horatio Clare has recorded a series of different walks for BBC Radio 3. His books include The Light in the Dark: A Winter Journal; A Single Swallow; Down the Sea in Ships and his new memoir Heavy Light. Dr Noreen Masud teaches on twentieth century fiction at Durham University. You can hear her talking about nonsense writing in this episode of Free Thinking about Dada https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000k9ws and in this Sunday Feature she looks at aphorisms https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000rtxb Producer: Torquil MacLeod

I made two versions of this episode. This version discusses suicidal ideation. The other version has a delightful musical interlude instead (don't worry, I included the musical interlude at the end because you deserve to hear me imitate a xylophone). These sick beats are Brewing Potions, written by Rafael Krux, which they described as "experimenting with magic gone wrong". I hear you, Rafael. Gemma Cairney brings together artists from two different countries to combine their talents to make a new piece of music. In this episode Gemma invites 24-year-old London rapper Loyle Carner to Guyana, South America to join flautist and composer Keith Waithe, a leading figurehead and champion of Guyanese culture. Loyle aka Benjamin Coyle-Larner was raised in Croydon South London by his Scottish mother and stepfather. His biological father is of Guyanese descent, but he has never visited the country. Loyle earned a Mercury Prize nomination for his debut album Yesterday’s Gone in 2017. His second album Not Waving, But Drowning was released earlier this year exploring everything from his ADHD and the pains of moving away from home, to his mixed race heritage. His other passion is food and he launched the Chilli Con Carner cookery school for kids growing up, as he had, with ADHD. Loyle will be immersed in the culture, food and music of Georgetown, working with Keith and other traditional Guyanese musicians to learn about the roots of Guyanese music and explore his black identity and create a brand new track together . Presented by Gemma Cairney Produced by Jax Coombes A BBC 6 Music Production for BBC Radio 4

I chatted to him about his new album which is out now, called Not Waving, But Drowning. He’s an absolute gem, so I hope you enjoy. Also fun fact, his real name is Benjamin Coyle-Larner.

Charlie is a DJ and musician firmly on the rise, a worthy ascendency for someone who has been hard at work for many years. Originally born in Berlin, she now resides in Krakow, the city that she’s been running her party Szum from for the last three and a half years. The party takes place at different locations around the city, including arguably one of Krakow's most forward thinking nightclubs Szpitalna 1, and has seen Charlie book live acts from the likes of Martial Canterel, Novo Line, Not Waving, Tolouse Low Trax and June to join her and other local selectors. Charlie is someone we expect to see big things from in the future and this mix is a perfect representation of why. We're happy to host this mix from her, recorded only on vinyl and consisting of predominantly old trance records played at 33RPM. Strap in and enjoy the ride...
This weekend we closed the curtains and visited the creepy, crawling world of acid, industrial & electronic body music with KRM aka K Road Munter. The Auckland based DJ has quickly been recognised for his supurbly meaty sets around town & is now a resident DJ and co-founder of KLANG. Enjoy a ragged wall of banging kicks and hard edged synth lines, & keep the fire extinguisher handy. Some extraordinary electronic music on this week's show. JahYu's rootsy dub with throat singing and bird noises ticks all our boxes, we've got two future British masters in Commodo and Rocks FOE combining, and another one in Gaika. It's a real showcase of wonderful British electronics, with Not Waving, Champion, and Four Tet also appearing. Away from that we have the legendary Iggy Pop kicking things off, brilliant electronic pop with Montreal's She-Devils, Italian drone from Fulkanelli and Ethiopian elect
Shock World Service 061; Make Mine A 99 (Jon Averill) 15/05/15 London, United Kingdom 1. Bonnie Dobson & Her Boys - Winter's Going ‘I'll kill your baby & then i'll kill you', strong stuff from a Canadian. This song opens the podcast which was originally intended as an ode to the onset of summer. The fluctuating climate of May 2015 left us with something a whole lot less defined however. 2. Miaoux Miaoux - Hey Sound Miaoux Miaoux is Julian Corrie, a Glasgow based producer. This track is taken from his 2012 album ‘Light of the North' which i've never listened to. 3. Howie B - Butt Meat Second part of a Glasgow producer double is an absolute masterclass by Howard Bernstein in how to make cut & paste hip hop. A near perfect record. 4. J. K. Mayengani & The Shingwedzi Sisters - Khubani No idea where I got this record from, it's great though isn't it? 5. Sly & Robbie - Computer Malfunction Another example of how much better I am than you is that I would steal this record from my dad's collection in my early teens, fascinated by it's intermix of groove & spacey electronics. 6. Gunnar Haslam - Aisepos Brooding strings sit atop an tribal sounding drum machine beat. Taken from a compilation with the fantastic title of ‘Music for ShutiIns'. 7. Original Tropicana Steel Band - Calypso Rock This track couldn't be more antithetical to the last. 8. Pye Corner Audio - One Time Pad And once again we transmute from the sultry to the foreboding. Taken from the recently released ‘Intercepts' album. A collaboration between Pye Corner Audio & Shock World Service favourite Not Waving. 9. Number One Ensemble - Flor De Coca Low bpm disco from a compilation entitled ‘Italo Disco – Essential Italian Disco Classics 1977-1985' 10. Owen Hand - Cam Ye O'er Frae France Long time followers of the podcast will wonder where it all went wrong. 11. Paul Stewart - Kiki & Pepe I always like to include some stories or spoken word elements in each podcast. This time it's a section of audio from an album called ‘The Warrick Sessions Volume 1' which is a bizarre & fascinating listen. 12. Joe Meek - Orbit Around The World Another bizarre piece of music from 1960 from Joe Meek, the UKs answer to Brian Willson & Phil Spector. This ploughs similar territory to his other retro-futuristic track ‘Telstar'. 13. Between - Devotion Psychedelic, meditative, transcendental, cogitative. 14. Jack Blanchard & Misty Morgan - Journey's End On my last visit to New York we went to late night honky-tonk (yet hipster) den called Skinny Dennis (152 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211). This is the kind of shit kickin' anthem that would have gone down a treat there. And by co-incidence this is also our journey's end.
