In today's episode, the guys discuss mentally ill demons named Gerald. Joe educates us on the lost art of drumming (apparently, it requires less effort than blinking), while Reese details his gravity-defying stage antics that may or may not have been demonically inspired. We also learn that Reese's luggage was stolen, but thankfully, the thief spared the Five Iron Frenzy banner—because even criminals have standards. And in a shocking twist, Seattle is still rainy, and Portland remains aggressively Portland. If there's one music genre lampooned more than Christian rock, it might just be ska. And Christian ska? Expect next level ridicule. But a lovable band of misfits from Denver, Colorado managed to do something that might seem unthinkable: combine two maligned genres and become a cultural phenomenon with an enduring cult following. On the season two finale of Rock that Doesn't Roll, music journalist Andrew Gill (Sound Opinions), and historian Leah Payne (God Gave Rock and Roll to You: a History of Contemporary Christian Music) follow the unlikely rise of Five Iron Frenzy, with insight from Leanor Ortega Till, aka "Jeff the Girl," aka the saxophonist from one of the best-loved bands in the Christian rock universe.Do you have a Christian rock story to tell? The Pickle and Boot Shop Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 13, 2024 41:20

From ChatGPT:Reese Roper, known for his music and particularly his involvement in ska bands like Five Iron Frenzy, may have referred to Atlanta as a utopia akin to Wakanda for several reasons:Cultural Richness: Atlanta is known for its vibrant and diverse cultural scene, especially within the African-American community. It has been a significant center for African-American culture, music (such as hip-hop and R&B), arts, and cuisine. This cultural richness and diversity can evoke a sense of utopia where different cultures thrive harmoniously.Community and Identity: Atlanta has a strong sense of community and identity among its residents, particularly within the African-American population. This community cohesion and pride in heritage can create a sense of utopia where people feel connected and supported.Progress and Innovation: Atlanta has experienced significant economic growth and development, becoming a major economic and business hub in the southeastern United States. This progress and innovation in various fields can be seen as utopian ideals where opportunities abound and advancements are made.Historical and Social Significance: Atlanta has played a pivotal role in American history, particularly in the Civil Rights Movement. It is the birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr. and has been a center for activism and social change. This historical significance and commitment to social justice can contribute to the perception of Atlanta as a utopia where equality and justice are valued.Symbolic Representation: Comparing Atlanta to Wakanda metaphorically as a utopia can be a way to celebrate its strengths, achievements, and positive aspects. It highlights the city's cultural, economic, and social significance in a positive and uplifting manner.Overall, Reese Roper's comparison of Atlanta to Wakanda as a utopia likely reflects his admiration for the city's cultural vibrancy, community spirit, historical importance, and ongoing progress. It's a way to express how Atlanta embodies ideals of cultural richness, unity, and opportunity that resonate with the fictional utopia portrayed in Wakanda.Patreon: www.patreon.com/pickleandbootshop Merch: www.bonfire.com/store/the-pickle-and-boot-shop--shop/ Email: thepickleandbootshop@gmail.com Instagram: joeandreesepabs Diabolical Discussion by Daniel Rock: facebook.com/groups/diabolicaldiscussion Good Eats: beefaro

Labeled:

Reese Roper is simply a legend. Five Iron Frenzy (FIF) was one of the first Christian bands truly existing in both the Christian and mainstream space. In the late 90s during the ska explosion, they achieved real commercial success, made a bold choice to stay on a small independent label, and were delivering absolutely scorching lyrics that were full of questions and critique - lyrics that challenged the existing cultural structures. Packaging those lyrics in the ska-punk package was a perfect move that paid off deeply to their fan base. FIF is also one of those bands that pioneered and cultivated their followers into super fans by delivering on multiple layers of depth across time and staying true to their principles. They are heroes of the scene and certainly paved the way for the next generation. They are now releasing an incredibly cool vinyl box set of all their music. You gotta check it out and the promotional video for it. I'll link it in the notes because it delivers the perfect amount of silliness and humor that you'd expect from FIF. I thought this would be a great chance to talk to Reese and get his reflections on some of the special things they have accomplished plus some of the challenges. Samuel chapter 17! We've reached a Bible story everybody PRETTY MUCH knows, though there are still lots of fun details. It wasn't a slingshot, for one thing! Goliath is the Statue of Liberty of Michael Jordans, David is Mr. Have It Both Ways, and King Saul's descent into madness ramps up right now! Emily is mostly concerned with whether this Philistine-Israelite war is cruelty-free toward animals. We're excited to be joined by Andrew Whitehead, author of numerous works explaining the dangers of Christian Nationalism. Yep, this relates to how the David and Goliath story gets taught in church!
